Effects of recycled concrete aggregate on stiffness and rutting resistance of asphalt concrete

AB  - The objective of this research was to assess the possibility of using recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) in asphalt mixtures. The experimental research included 10 asphalt mixtures with partial natural aggregate substitution by RCA, which ranged from 15% to 45% of fine (  le c.4 mm), coarse (4/22.4 mm) and both fine and coarse aggregate. The optimum bitumen content increased with increasing RCA content. The use of RCA had no significant influence on the permanent deformation, while the stiffness modulus of asphalt mixtures with RCA was lower compared with the control mixture, especially at high frequencies. The results indicate that RCA can be successfully used in asphalt mixtures.

The performance of bitumen mastics with the addition of fly ash

AB  - There are two potential uses of fly ash in asphalt mixtures: as a replacement of stone filler, or as a substitution for a certain percentage of bitumen. This paper focuses on the second option with the objective to investigate the interaction between fly ash and bitumen. Oscillatory tests were performed using a Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) over a range of temperatures and frequencies, on original, short-term aged and longterm aged samples of fly ash-bitumen mastics. Additionally, testing using a Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) was performed to assess resistance to low temperature cracking which is critical for modified bitumen with increased modulus. The addition of fly ash to bitumen improves the performance of the mastics and increases the viscosity and complex modulus at high temperatures and low frequencies, but has a negative effect on the resistance to cracking at low temperatures, thus increasing the low performance grade classification.

Application of the bitumen classification according to Superpave methodology in Serbia

AB  - The paper presents new methodology for testing of rheological properties of bitumen and SUPERPAVE PG classification of bitumen based on maximum and minimum pavement design temperatures. The maps of Serbia with PG classification for different reliability levels were developed that present characteristics of bitumen that are needed for different climatic regions and different road functional classes. Paper also presents the first results of rheological tests on unmodified and modified binder used in Serbia. It was concluded that BIT 60 satisfies for high pavement design temperatures for most of Serbia and that use of modified bitumen is justified only on heavily trafficked roads or roads with slow traffic.
AB  - U radu je predstavljen postupak za klasifikaciju bitumena prema metodologiji SUPERPAVE, u zavisnosti od najviših i najnižih projektnih temperatura kolovoza. Razvijene su mape za teritoriju Srbije za različite nivoe pouzdanosti, koje ukazuju na karakteristike veziva koje treba da se primeni u pojedinim klimatskim područjima i na saobraćajnicama koje pripadaju različitim funkcionalnim kategorijama. U radu su takođe prikazani i rezultati prvih ispitivanja reoloških karakteristika nemodifikovanih i modifikovanih bitumena koji se primenjuju u Srbiji i zaključeno je da BIT 60 zadovoljava u pogledu uslova primene na visokim temperaturama za najveći deo teritorije Srbije i da je primena modifikovanih bitumena opravdana samo na izuzetno opterećenim saobraćajnicama, ili saobraćajnicama sa usporenim saobraćajem.

AB  - SUPERPAVE methodology for investigation of performance based characteristics of binders is widely used, especially in the United States for more then ten years. SUPERPAVE methodology has found its way in binder characterization in Serbia as well. This paper presents basic concepts behind SUPERPAVE binder characterization, its implementation and practical approach for investigation on the newly installed equipment at the Laboratory for Pavement Materials at University of Belgrade. Also, results from testing of two modified binder candidates used during construction and rehabilitation of the wearing courses on Motorway Novi Sad - Belgrade are presented as well as some comments on the results obtained during testing.
AB  - U radu je predstavljena savremena metodologija za ispitivanje reoloških karakteristika bitumena i novoinstalirana oprema u Laboratoriji za kolovozne konstrukcije Građevinskog fakulteta u Beogradu. Pored toga, dati su i rezultati ispitivanja dva uzorka polimer-modifikovanog bitumena koji su korišćeni tokom 2007. godine za proizvodnju asfaltnih mešavina na projektu rehabilitacije postojećeg kolovoza na auto-putu Novi Sad - Beograd.
