AB - Slip-resistant shear connections with preloaded bolts have traditionally been used in steel
structures exposed to cyclic. Hence, shear load is transferred through friction surfaces
rather than through contact between the bolt surface and the hole. The main influencing
parameters determining slip resistance of the connection are the friction between contact
surfaces and the bolt preload level. This paper presents an experimental study of preloaded
bolted connections under cyclic load, the main objective being to investigate the influence
of cyclic load on the losses of preload force in high strength bolts and lock bolts.

AB - Existing design codes for steel-concrete composite structures give only general information about the shear connection provided by headed studs in group arrangement. Grouting of the openings in prefabricated concrete slabs, where the grouped headed studs are placed in the deck pockets is alternative to cast-in-place decks to accomplish fast execution of composite structures. This paper considers the possibility to reduce the distance between the studs within the group, bellow the Eurocode limitations. This may lead to increased competitiveness of the prefabricated construction because more studs are placed in the group if negative effectives of smaller distances between studs are limited. The main purpose of this work is to investigate these limits and propose an analytical calculation model for prediction of the shear resistance of grouped stud arrangements in the deck pockets. An advanced FEA model, validated by results of push-out experiments, is used to analyze the shear behavior of the grouped stud with smaller distance between them than recommended by EN 1994-1. Calculation model for shear resistance, which is consistent with the existing Eurocode rules, is proposed based on a newly introduced equivalent diameter of the stud group, d(G). The new calculation model is validated by comparison to the results of FE parametric study. The distance between the studs in the longitudinal direction and the number of stud rows and columns in the group are considered as the main variables.

AB - Grouped headed studs may be successfully utilized to achieve the longitudinal shear connection between prefabricated slabs and steel beams. The behaviour of the studs and the ultimate resistance of the group were analysed using the results of experimental push tests and by employing advanced FE analyses. Different arrangements of studs in the group were investigated, focusing on minimal distance between the studs. It is demonstrated that the full shear resistance of a group of headed studs is achieved even when the distances between the studs are less than the minimum requirement according to EN 1994-1-1. Concrete class C30/37 is the minimum that should be used. Furthermore, the paper presents a new model for calculating the shear resistance of grouped headed studs. The proposed design model is based on an equivalent stud diameter and can be used for various arrangements of headed studs in a group. The shear resistance formula and the requirements for ductility are consistent with the existing Eurocodes. Fatigue loading is not considered in this paper, so the proposed recommendations are valid for buildings including multi-storey car parks.

AB - Prefabricated steel and concrete composite decks are an interesting option to improve competitiveness and sustainability of the composite structures. Longitudinal shear connection is usually established by grouped headed studs, but possible alternative solution is to use bolted shear connectors. Welded headed studs and bolts (grade 8.8) are experimentally examined in the push-out tests (four tests on each). The same arrangement and dimensions of shear connectors (16 mm diameter and 100 mm height above flange) are considered and their resistances and behaviour are compared. Experimental results showed that headed studs and bolted shear connectors have similar shear resistance, while headed studs are more ductile. FEA is performed by ABAQUS/Explicit solver with damage material models to get more insight into behaviour of the specimens. FEA shows rather good agreement with experimental results. Influence of the bolt to hole clearance on the behaviour of specimens with bolted shear connectors is analysed and discussed.

AB - Prefabrication of steel-concrete composite decks can improve their competitiveness and sustainability. This paper presents recent studies of longitudinal shear connection at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Civil Engineering. Grouped welded headed studs and bolted shear connectors, suitable for prefabricated composite construction, has been examined in push-out tests. Totally 30 tests were conducted, and advanced FEA were made using Abaqus/Explicit dynamic solver. Based on the experimental and numerical studies behaviour those two shear connectors are compared.

AB - Prefabrication of concrete slabs reduces construction time for composite steel-concrete buildings and bridges. Different alternatives for shear connectors (bolts and headed studs) are analysed here to gain better insight in failure modes of shear connector in order to improve competiveness of prefabricated composite structures. Casting of high strength bolted shear connectors in prefabricated concrete slabs offers the higher level of prefabrication comparing to a standard method of grouting welded headed studs in envisaged pockets of concrete slabs. In addition, bolted shear connectors can easily be dismantled together with the concrete slab thus allowing the improved sustainability of the construction, simpler maintenance, and development of modular structural systems. Bolted shear connectors have been rarely used in construction, actually just for rehabilitation works, because there is a lack of design recommendation. The first step towards the design recommendation is to understand the difference between the headed shear studs and the bolted shear connectors in a push-out test. Push-out tests, according to EN1994-1-1, using 4 M16 - grade 8.8 bolts with embedded nut in the same layout and test set-up as for previously investigated headed studs were performed. Finite element models for both shear connectors were created, and good match with experimental data was obtained. Basic shear connector properties such as: shear resistance, stiffness, ductility and failure modes have been compared and discussed in detail by using experimental and FE results. Parametric FE analyses of shear connector's height are carried out and shear resistance reduction factor has been proposed for bolted shear connectors.

AB - Precast concrete slabs connected to the steel beams by headed shear studs arranged in groups may be used in high-rise office buildings to speed up construction process and improve quality by increasing the grade of industrialization. The paper presents experimental research performed on push-out tests at the Faculty of Civil Engineering University in Belgrade. The main goal has been to investigate possible reductions of shear stiffness and strength of five group arrangements consisting always of four headed shear studs, the shank diameter 16 mm and 100 mm height. A shape of group arrangement and its orientation to the applied load, and distance between the studs were variables considered. Intention was to have as small as possible holes in precast concrete slabs so the distance between studs was lower than minimum required in Eurocode 4. Comparison is made with results obtained on specimen with uniformly distributed shear studs, according to requirements of the standard arrangement. Material characteristics were obtained and push-out tests were preformed in procedures that fully comply with Eurocode 4. Experimental results were evaluated according to the design models in Eurocode 4 and available literature. Recommendations for use of the group arrangements were proposed.
