Conditional random fields for simulating spatial variability of geotechnical parameters in tunnelling

AB  - In times of fast urbanization, underground infrastructure has taken primacy for servicing the city development. Shield tunnel construction is facing significant challenges due to geological uncertainty and limited availability of site-specific test data. As proven by recent works, tunnel design can be done more precisely within the probabilistic frameworks by considering the soil spatial variability, rather than using conventional deterministic-based approaches. In spatial
variability modelling, the problem of incomplete utilization of known borehole soil parameters
within the unconditional random fields can be overcome by generating conditional random fields.
This paper presents a comprehensive review of the CRF application for spatial variability assessments in tunneling in the last five years. It finds that, when applying CRF-based probabilistic approaches, parameter uncertainty is undeniably reduced, and tunnel performance assessments are improved. Since CRFs have rarely been used for tunnel performance assesment, the paper recognizes research gaps that are of great interest to be further investigated in the future.

Importance of the global sensitivity analysis in development of metamodels for geotechnical back analysis

AB  - This paper investigates the use of global sensitivity analysis during the development of
metamodels for back-analysis of geotechnical problems. Variance-based global sensitivity analysis
was combined with Particle swarm optimization algorithm and POD-ERBF metamodel to backcalculate
the hypothetic (synthetic) problem of anchor-supported excavation. PLAXIS 2D FE code
was used for numerical simulations. The results of the back analysis for different sets of model
parameters were compared to emphasize the importance of global sensitivity analysis before
performing the back analysis and the recommendations for the robust modeling of presented
geotechnical problem were given.

AB  - Veliki infrastrukturni projekti zahtevaju upotrebu velike količine prirodnih materijala. U cilju
očuvanja prirodnih materijala, smanjenja prostora za deponovanje otpada i održivog razvoja, u
ovom radu su prikazani rezultati laboratorijskih ispitivanja pepela iz toplane u Kragujevcu za
primenu u putogradnji. Izvršeni su sledeći laboratorijski opiti za određivanje fizičkih i
mehaničkih svojstava pepela: specifična težina, granulometrijski sastav, parametri zbijenosti,
pritisna čvrstoća (UCS), opit direktnog smicanja, CBR, edometarski opit. Diskutovana su
svojstva pepela sa aspekta primene u putogradnji.

AB  - U ovom radu prikazana je analiza i ocena uzroka velikih deformacija potpornog zida (AB
dijafragme) u sklopu postrojenja za iskorišćenje komunalnog otpada i deponijskog gasa kompleksa
za upravljanje otpadom "Vinča". Prikazani su rezultati dodatnih geotehničkih istraživanja na
lokaciji. Kao osnovni uzrok povećanih deformacija identifikovan je geotehnički profil terena, koji
ne odgovara ulaznim podacima korišćenim u projektu konstrukcije. Dat je predlog mera sanacije
izvedene konstrukcije.

AB  - У раду је приказан преглед литературе о могућностима употребе пепела и шљаке за изградњу саобраћајне инфраструктуре, с обзиром да велики инфраструктурни пројекти захтевају значајну употребу природних материјала. Затим је дат преглед резултата лабораторијског испитивања пепела и шљаке из термоелектрана у Србији за стабилизацију слабо носивог тла и као материјала за изградњу насипа. Испитивана су инжењерска својства летећег пепела и мешавине пепела и шљаке са и без активатора (цемента и креча). Резултати указују на позитивне ефекте стабилизације тла, у смислу повећања чврстоће и смањења експанзивности. Такође, летећи пепео и мешавине пепела и шљаке имају добре механичке карактеристике, што их у комбинацији са више других предности (мања потрошња енергије и емисија CО2, уштеда природних материјала и мања подручја депонија), чини погодним материјалима за израду насипа саобраћајнице.

AB  - Landslides are one of the most often natural disasters that have an extensive impact on society including loss of life, destruction of infrastructure and properties, damage to land and loss of natural resources. Landslide losses can significantly vary and they depend on a variety of different criteria such as the size and type of landslide, lithological setting of terrain, the terrain slope gradient, the quality of materials used for construction, and the construction typology. Damage from landslides is usually characterized as either direct or indirect and in most questionnaires only the data referring to the direct damage is collected. In this paper, a landslide damage questionnaire that can be used for landslide damage characterization and determination of landslide hazard and risk in urban areas is proposed. The questionnaire contains 11 groups of questions that include all necessary fields for gathering the data which is essential for both landslide hazard and risk estimation. It was used as an inventory landslide damage form in suburban housings which usually occupy larger land plots, while objects built on such plots are mostly houses for an individual living or ancillary type.

Numerical model of bored pile group under arbitrary horizontal loading

AB  - Foundations of wind turbines, bridges, offshore platforms, industrial chimneys, retaining
structures, marine and harbor structures etc. can be loaded with significant horizontal loads from
various sources. Appropriate assessment of the foundations capacity of these structures is
necessary, especially when these structures are supported by pile groups. The horizontal loading
on the pile group may have arbitrary direction. This paper addresses some important aspects of
FEM numerical modeling of a bored pile group under arbitrary horizontal loading. Model
parameters, validation and post-processing techniques are presented and discussed. The full 3D
FEM model was found to be necessary for the correct problem solution.

AB  - U radu je opisano rešenje fundiranja južne tribine stadiona FK "TSC" u Bačkoj Topoli.
Razmatrana su varijantna rešenja plitkog fundiranja na temeljnim trakama i temeljnoj ploči,
sa posebnim osvrtom na proračun sleganja temelja na deformabilnoj podlozi. Proračun
sleganja je izvršen u iterativnom postupku, primenom sopstvenih računarskih programa i uz
uzimanje u obzir interakcije tla i konstrukcije. Dobijeni rezultati proračuna su upoređeni sa
rezultatima geodetskog osmatranja. Istaknuti su nedostaci Vinklerovog modela i date su
preporuke za numeričku analizu sleganja plitkih temelja u inženjerskoj praksi.
AB  - This paper describes the foundations solution of the south stand of the FC "TSC" stadium in
Bačka Topola. Variant solutions (strip foundations and raft foundation) are considered, with
special emphasis on the calculation of foundation settlements on a deformable base. The
settlements calculation was performed in an iterative procedure, using own computer
programs and considering the soil-structure interaction. The obtained results are compared
with the results of geodetic monitoring of the structure. The shortcomings of the Winkler
model are highlighted and recommendations for numerical analysis of the foundations'
settlements in engineering practice are given

AB  - Konstrukcije vetroturbina, mostova, industrijskih dimnjaka, potpornih zidova i sl. mogu biti izložene značajnim horizontalnim opterećenjima iz različitih izvora. Ove konstrukcije su često fundirane na grupama šipova. Efekti interakcije šipova u grupi pri horizontalnim opterećenjima su bili predmet istraživanja u poslednjim decenijama, pri čemu je najčešće razmatran slučaj horizontalnog opterećenja u dva ortogonalna pravca (paralelno ivicama grupe šipova). Usled stohastičke prirode, horizontalno opterećenje na grupu šipova može biti proizvoljnog pravca, i broj istraživanja koji razmatra ovaj slučaj opterećenja je relativno mali. U ovom radu prikazani su rezultati istraživanja uticaja horizontalnog opterećenja proizvoljnog pravca na odgovor grupe šipova, u cilju poboljšanja trenutnog koncepta projektovanja ovakvih temelja. Razmatrani su bušeni šipovi fundirani u peskovitom tlu, kroz opsežnu numeričku analizu. Identifikovane su "kritične" pozicije šipova unutar standardnih konfiguracija, diskutovan je uticaj različitih uslova u tlu i date su preporuke za projektovanje ovakvih tipova temeljnih konstrukcija.

AB  - U radu je prikazan kratak pregled odredbi Evrokoda 7 za proračun
aksijalne nosivosti šipova. Date su smernice i preporuke za proračun aksijalne
nosivosti utisnutih MEGA šipova u skladu sa izabranim proračunskim
pristupom prema nacionalnom prilogu za Evrokod 7 (Deo 1) u Srbiji i
specifičnostima tehnologije izvođenja. Prikazana je uporedna analiza proračuna
prognozne nosivosti MEGA šipova prema Evrokodu 7 i ranijem Pravilniku o
tehničkim normativima za temeljenje građevinskih objekata, zasnovanom na
teoriji dopuštenih napona, na primeru sanacije temelja stambene zgrade u
Zemunu. Dobijeni rezultati potvrđuju adekvatnost izabranog proračunskog
pristupa u nacionalnom prilogu i predloženih smernica za proračun nosivosti
MEGA šipova.
AB  - Short review of provisions of Eurocode 7 for determination of pile axial bearing
capacity is given in this paper. Design guidelines and recommendations for determination
of bearing capacity of jacked-in MEGA piles, according to pile installation
technology and chosen design approach in National Annex for Eurocode 7 (Part 1) in
Serbia are presented. A validation of proposed guidelines through comparison with previous
concept of allowable pile force is presented on the example of the rehabilitation of
the foundations of a residential building in Zemun, Serbia. Obtained results confirm the
adequacy of chosen design approach and proposed guidelines for determination of bearing
capacity of MEGA piles.

Appropriate assessment of the foundations capacity of these structures is thus necessary, especially when these structures are supported by pile groups. The pile group interaction effects under lateral loading have been investigated intensively in past decades, and the most of the conducted studies have considered lateral loading that acts along one of the two orthogonal directions, parallel to the edge of pile group. However, because of the stochastic nature of its source, the horizontal loading on the pile group may have arbitrary direction. The number of studies dealing with the pile groups under arbitrary loading is very limited. The aim of this paper is to investigate the influence of the arbitrary lateral loading on the pile group response, in order to improve (extend) the current design approach for laterally loaded pile groups. Free head, flexible bored piles in sand were analyzed through the extensive numerical study. The main hypothesis of the research is that some critical pile group configurations, loading directions, and soil conditions exist, which can lead to the unsafe structural design. Critical pile positions inside the commonly used pile group configurations are identified with respect to loading directions. The influence of different soil conditions was discussed.

AB  - The analysis of pile groups subjected to horizontal loading in one of two orthogonal directions is
a common problem in geotechnical engineering. However, the above analysis should sometimes
be extended with the additional cases of horizontal loading, in arbitrary direction. Although the
full scale experiments can provide the best insight into the above problem, they are expensive
and therefore not feasible solution. Instead, numerical (i.e. fi nite element) analysis usually
remains the ultimate tool for large scope studies.
The main objective of this research is the improvement of the analysis methodology of pile
group for the case of arbitrary static horizontal loading. Its influence is investigated numerically
to check for the existence of the "critical" pile group con figurations and soil conditions, that
may lead to the failure of the foundation structure and superstructure itself.
To reach the above objective, apriori sensitivity analysis of the considered problem and
identifi cation of the main problem parameters are conducted in the  first phase. After that, series
of complex 3D numerical models for laterally loaded pile group analysis have been generated
using PLAXIS 3D. Model validation is done by the back-calculation of available experimental
results. Parametric study of pile groups with various con figurations under arbitrary horizontal
loading is performed, with an emphasis on pile force distribution, bending response and pile
group efficiency.
Modelling and simulation processes and the optimization of the calculation time were improved
using the originally developed codes in Python. The use of multiple computers was
allowed by using the author's scripts developed within the thesis. The above research resulted
in thousands of numerical simulations, whose  findings provided the improved design methodology
of pile groups under arbitrary static horizontal loading.

AB  - Special-purpose river port sediment was investigated for its potential use as a road
construction material. Sediment samples were extracted from three locations in three small
river ports, and detailed laboratory research was conducted to determine its basic mechanical
properties and characteristics that can potentially have an adverse influence in a roadside
environment. The results of the research conducted indicate that there is a need for systematic
monitoring of the quality and quantity of sediment in special-purpose river ports of the
Danube River Basin to maintain its mobility and prevent flooding. The basic engineering
characteristics (Proctor elements, Atterberg limits, California bearing ratio, and unconfined
compressive strength) determined represent the good potential of the sediment samples tested
herein for use in road construction. In addition, the chemical characteristics tested indicate the
need for detailed analyses of the potential environmental risk before application in civil
engineering structures

The alternatives to traditional materials for subsoil stabilization and embankments

AB  - Major infrastructure projects require significant amount of natural materials, often followed by the soft soil stabilization using hydraulic binders. This paper presents the results of a laboratory study of alternative waste materials (fly ash and slag) that can be used for earthworks. Results of high plasticity clay stabilization using fly ash from Serbian power plants are presented in the first part. In the second part of the paper, engineering properties of ash and ash-slag mixtures are discussed with the emphasis on the application in road subgrade and embankment construction. Physical and mechanical properties were determined via following laboratory tests: Specific gravity, grain size distribution, the moisture–density relationship (Proctor compaction test), unconfined compressive strength (UCS), oedometer and swell tests, direct shear and the California bearing ratio (CBR). The results indicate the positive effects of the clay stabilization using fly ash, in terms of increasing strength and stiffness and reducing expansivity. Fly ashes and ash-slag mixtures have also comparable mechanical properties with sands, which in combination with multiple other benefits (lower energy consumption and CO2 emission, saving of natural materials and smaller waste landfill areas), make them suitable fill materials for embankments, especially considering the necessity for sustainable development.

AB  - This paper presents the results of laboratory research of physical and
mechanical properties of fly ash and mixtures of fly ash and slag from landfills of
thermal power plants “Nikola Tesla” and “Kostolac” in terms of their use for
road embankments construction. Following mechanical material properties were
tested: unified compressive strength (UCS), shear strength, deformability, CBR,
and resistance to frost. Results of the study have shown that waste materials
from Serbian thermal power plants can be successfully used as the building and
reconstruction material for road subgrade. This can bring multiple economic
benefits, such as: saving of natural materials, lower energy consumption, lower

AB  - This paper presents the evaluation of methods for predicting the ultimate axial bearing capacity of single piles based on the cone penetration test (CPT) results, and the evaluation of static methods based on the effective and total stress analysis. Seventeen jacked-in MEGA piles and eight Franki piles of different lengths are considered. The results show that the Bustamante & Gianeselli (LCPC) method is the most appropriate for the studied geotechnical conditions and pile types.

AB  - The results of laboratory research of high plasticity clay stabilization using liquid chemical additive Polybond and the fly ash from Serbian thermal electric power plant Kostolac are presented in this paper. In order to determine the effects of stabilization, extensive laboratory study of physical and mechanical properties of the stabilized soil (unconfined compression strength, shear strength parameters, CBR, deformation parameters, swelling, coefficient of permeability, resistance to freezing) were performed. The results of the research clearly indicate the positive effects of the clay stabilization using Polybond, as well as fly ash, and confirm that these additives can be successfully applied as a clayey soil stabilizers in various practical applications such as: stabilization of low bearing subgrade, construction of embankments and geotechnical structures of low permeability, improvement of mechanical properties of top subgrade layers etc. The use of stabilizers reduces energy consumption, as well as the usage of natural materials such as stone aggregates.

AB  - This paper describes the solution of the rehabilitation of the foundations of the building of the Faculty of Chemistry in Belgrade, which suffered damage as a result of differential settlements, which happened several times during the exploitation. It was determined that the cause of settlements was moisturing of loess soil due to periodic watter spilling from da- maged water network. Rehabilitation is done by jacking of MEGA piles, which prevents the appearance of additional settlements. The rehabilitation was carried out in 2012-2013. In a second part of the paper, the evaluation of pile capacity prediction methods based on CPT test results is carried out by comparing with the measured pile jacking force.

AB  - U radu su prikazani rezultati laboratorijskih ispitivanja mogućnosti stabilizacije gline visoke plastičnosti primenom tečnog hemijskog aditiva Polybond, kao i stabilizacije tla kombinacijom letećeg pepela iz TE Kostolac i Polybonda. U cilju utvrđivanja efekata stabilizacije sprovedena su opsežna laboratorijska ispitivanja fizičko-mehaničkih karakteristika stabilizovanog tla (jednoaksijalna čvrstoća, parametri smičuće čvrstoće, CBR, modul stišljivosti, potencijal bubrenja, koeficijent vodopropusnosti, otpornost na dejstvo mraza). Rezultati istraživanja jasno ukazuju na pozitivne efekte stabilizacije gline Polybondom i potvrđuju stavove da se isti može uspešno primeniti kao stabilizator glinovitih vrsta tla u različitim praktičnim primenama kao što su: stabilizacija slabo nosivog tla, izgradnja nasipa i geotehničkih konstrukcija male vodopropusnosti, poboljšanje mehaničkih osobina gornjih slojeva donjeg stroja saobraćajnica itd.

AB  - Realistic modeling of pile groups requires the use of complex nonlinear 3D simulations, usually with full discretization of pile continuum. In order to reduce the complexity of these models, as well as the computation time, in past years an embedded beam element has been formulated and implemented into FEM computer codes such as PLAXIS 3D. This concept was originally intended for modeling axially loaded piles and pile groups, while its performances under lateral loading conditions are not fully investigated. This paper presents the overview of different modeling techniques of laterally loaded pile groups using FEM. The possibility of using embedded beam model for this problem, as well as its limitations, have been discussed.

AB  - This paper presents the results of laboratory research of fly ash soil stabilization. Tests were performed on mixtures with high plasticity clay and fly ash sampled from thermal electric power plant ”Kostolac”. Effects of fly ash on moisturedensity relationship, UCS, CBR, deformation parameters and swell potential were evaluated. Results of the research indicate that fly ash can improve some engineering properties of this type of soil. The most significant improvement is the increase in CBR values which makes this material usable for road construction.
AB  - U radu su prikazani rezultati laboratorijskih ispitivanja stabilizacije gline visoke plastičnosti primenom letećeg pepela iz TE Kostolac. Ispitan je uticaj pepela na odnos vlažnosti i suve zapreminske težine, jednoaksijalnu čvrstoću, CBR, module deformabilnosti i potencijal bubrenja. Dobijeni rezultati su pokazali da se primenom pepela kao stabilizatora mogu poboljšati neke inženjerske karakteristike ove vrste tla. Najveće poboljšanje je porast CBR vrednosti, što ovo tlo čini upotrebljivim u putogradnji.

AB  - U ovom radu opisano je određivanje dinamičkih karakteristika tla za ekvivalentnu 1D linearnu analizu dinamičkog odgovora. Istraživanja u ovoj oblasti pokazala su da ovakva analiza daje rezultate koji su u skladu sa merenim vrednostima, pod uslovom da su zadovoljene odgovarajuće pretpostavke i da su dinamičke karakteristike pravilno definisane. Do danas je razvijeno više terenskih i laboratorijskih metoda za određivanje dinamičkih karakteristika tla, kao i veliki broj empirijskih formula.

AB  - This paper presents the determination of the geotechnical conditions for repair of steam boiler shallow foundation in the boiler room of the factory "Galenika", Zemun, due to the differential foundation settlements. The analysis of the causes of the problem, the program and the results of field and laboratory geotechnical testings, as well as the repair solution, are presented.
