AB - Flooding is expected to increase due to climate change, urbanisation, and land use change. To address this issue, Nature-Based Solutions (NBSs) are often adopted as innovative and sustainable flood risk management methods. Besides the flood risk reduction benefits, NBSs offer co-benefits for the environment and society. However, these co-benefits are rarely considered in flood risk management due to the inherent complexities of incorporating them into economic assessments. This research addresses this gap by developing a comprehensive methodology that integrates the monetary analysis of co-benefits with flood risk reduction in economic assessments. In doing so, it aspires to provide a more holistic view of the impact of NBS in flood risk management. The assessment employs a framework based on life-cycle cost-benefit analysis, offering a systematic and transparent assessment of both costs and benefits over time supported by key indicators like net present value and benefit cost ratio. The methodology has been applied to the Tamnava basin in Serbia, where significant flooding occurred in 2014 and 2020. The methodology offers valuable insights for practitioners, researchers, and planners seeking to assess the co-benefits of NBS and integrate them into economic assessments. The results show that when considering flood risk reduction alone, all considered measures have higher costs than the benefits derived from avoiding flood damage. However, when incorporating co-benefits, several NBS have a net positive economic impact, including afforestation/reforestation and retention ponds with cost-benefit ratios of 3.5 and 5.6 respectively. This suggests that incorporating co-benefits into economic assessments can significantly increase the overall economic efficiency and viability of NBS.

AB - The benchmarking test of 2D and 3D numerical models on a compound channel flow with a rectangular-shaped main channel and a rectangular-shaped floodplain was carried out by the IAHR Working Group on Compound Channels. The selected test case is the flume experiment by Nezu and Tominaga (1991). Nine depth-averaged 2D models and four 3D models participated in the benchmark. In the 2D models, the depth-averaged streamwise velocity profiles in the lateral direction were compared. In the 3D models, velocity components in three directions as well as the distribution of the turbulence kinetic energy in a cross-section were compared. Through the comparison, the applicability and limitations of each model are highlighted and discussed with regard to the model characteristics.

AB - Merenje protoka u otvorenim kanalima često je dugotrajan, invazivan, složen i skup poduhvat, koji neretko uključuje veći broj naročito obučenih rukovaoca opremom, i različite naknadne obrade podataka sa terena. Razvoj tehnologije lakih bespilotnih letelica opremljenih kamerama omogućio je alternativan pristup posrednog merenja protoka putem analize polja površinskih brzina u otvorenom toku. Iako merenja ovom metodom pružaju podatke više merne neizvesnosti od konvencionalnih mernih metoda, opisana procedura beskontaktnog merenja protoka je (1) vremenski efikasnija, (2) zahteva manji broj rukovaoca opremom, (3) primenjiva čak i u određenim uslovima u kojima konvencionalne metode nisu i (4) otvara mogućnost automatizovanog i autonomnog monitoringa vodotoka.
AB - Open-channel flow rate measurement is often a time consuming, invasive, complex, and expensive procedure, which frequently requires involvement of multiple equipment operators and various postprocessing techniques. The development of camera-equipped lightweight unmanned aerial vehicles has enabled an alternative approach of indirect flow rate measurement by analyzing the surface flow velocities. Although the data acquired by this approach experiences somewhat higher measurement uncertainty than that of conventional measurement techniques, such non-contact measurement method is (1) more time efficient, (2) requires fewer operators, (3) can be applied in certain conditions when conventional methods are unfeasible, and (4) allows for automated and autonomous flow monitoring. Hydrometric analyses of video footage are still unstandardized, and finding a suitable tool which successfully deals with all the necessary actions for velocity and flow estimation has proven to be difficult. SSIMS-Flow tool is developed with the aim of providing easy access to different actions of video footage data preparation and processing to enable a holistic process – from preparing a “raw” video footage to the estimation of flow rate – which drastically simplifies the described approach.

AB - Model-driven forecasting used for flood risk assessment or river hydropower
systems management, can produce bad results due to many model uncertainties. False inflow
and lateral inflow data and/or poor estimation of initial conditions are some of the uncertainty
sources. To improve model-driven forecasting, data assimilation methods are used for updating
model (e.g., water levels) according to measurements. Widespread data assimilation
methods (EnKF, Particle Filter) often increase computational time, which creates difficulties
in everyday application of these methods in hydraulic modelling. This paper presents novel
approach based on indirect model update adding correction flows at observation locations.
This novel, tailor-made, assimilation approach uses proportional-integrative-derivative controller’s
theory as algorithm for correction flow calculation. Using indirect approach for
model update has justification in models where multiple inflows, including lateral inflows, are
bad estimated or even neglected. This novel approach is tested on 170km long section of
Danube model in Serbia, showing good performance.

AB - Model-driven forecasting, used for flood risks or big hydropower systems management, can produce results of unsatisfying accuracy even with best-calibrated hydrodynamic models. One of the biggest uncertainty sources is the inflow data, either produced by different hydrological models or obtained using unreliable rating curves. To keep the model in the up-to-date state, data assimilation techniques are used. The aim of the assimilation is to reduce the difference between simulated and observed state of selected variables by updating hydrodynamic model state variables according to observed water levels. The widely used data assimilation method applicable for nonlinear hydrodynamic models is Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF). However, this method can often increase the computational time due to complexity of mathematical apparatus, making it less applicable in everyday operations. This paper presents the novel, fast, tailor-made data assimilation method, suitable for 1D open channel hydraulic models, based on control theory. Using Proportional-Integrative-Derivative (PID) controllers, the difference between measured levels and simulated levels obtained by hydrodynamic model is reduced by adding or subtracting the flows in the junctions/sections where water levels are measured. The novel PID control-based data assimilation (PID-DA) is compared to EnKF. Benchmarking shows that PID-DA can be used for data assimilation, even coupled with simplified 1D hydraulic model, without significant sacrifice of stability and accuracy, and with reduction of computational time up to 63 times.

AB - Flood risks management is based on data obtained by different forecasts. Forecasts are often based on hydrological-hydrodynamic models. These models are calibrated using selected time-series from the past. However, even calibrated models in later exploitation phases can produce solutions of unsatisfying accuracy. Some of the reasons are uncertainty in the initial and boundary conditions, uncertainty of the input data and uncertainty in riverbed geometry. The aim of the assimilation is to improve the results obtained from the previously calibrated model by coupling it with observed data. To assimilate, the model is run for a short previous period and the state of the model is adjusted to observed data. The corrected model state is then used as an initial state to run the model with for short-term forecast of input data. Assimilation method based on the PID controller for 1D river hydrodynamic models is analyzed in this paper. This method adjusts the state in the hydrodynamic models according to the measurements indirectly by adding or subtracting the discharge in the junction/sections with measured water level. The influence of the hydrodynamic model complexity is analyzed, comparing three models: non-inertia model, diffusion wave and dynamic wave model. Results show that PID control can be adequately used even coupled with simplified hydraulic models for short-term assimilation and forecast, without significant loss of accuracy. PID control-based data assimilation also yields significant reduction in the computational runtime.

AB - The capability of the smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method to model supercritical flow in circular pipe bends is considered. The standard SPH method, which makes use of dynamic boundary particles (DBP), is supplemented with the original algorithm for the treatment of open boundaries. The method is assessed through a comparison with measured free-surface profiles in a pipe bend, and already proposed regression curves for estimation of the flow-type in a pipe bend. The sensitivity of the model to different parameters is also evaluated. It is shown that an adequate choice of the artificial viscosity coefficient and the initial particle spacing can lead to correct presentation of the flow-type in a bend. Due to easiness of its implementation, the SPH method can be efficiently used in the design of circular conduits with supercritical flow in a bend, such as tunnel spillways, and bottom outlets of dams, or storm sewers.

AB - The paper aims at presenting possibilities of the exchange discharge model (EDM) in 1D non-prismatic compound channel flow modelling to the Serbian hydraulic engineering community. The model has been already successfully applied for the estimation of a rating curve in a two-stage channel based on the recorded water level, but it can be also used for the estimation of the slope of the energy grade-line for non-uniform flow calculations in a flooding river once the flood discharge is known. As such, the EDM can be used both in the flood risk assessment and the reconstruction of the flood event. The model is calibrated and tested against the experimental data from straight, non-prismatic channels with symmetrically enlarging and symmetrycaly narrowing floodplains with different degrees of expansion and contraction (gradual and abrupt expansions / contractions). Moreover, the model results are compared to those obtained with the traditional models that are still used in everyday engineering practice. It is readily demonstrated that traditional models underestimate water levels by more than 10%, while the EDM provides better agreement with measured ones (discrepancies are less than 3%). Acceptable level of agreement is also attained with the discharge distribution between the main channel and floodplanes - discrepancies do not exceed 3%, and in one case only they reach 8%.
AB - Results obtained by analysis of three different approaches to numerical modelling of open watercourses are presented in the paper. Two examples of flow, uniform flow on the physical model of a curve at the Tisza River and nonuniform flow at the Danube River, are analysed. Standard error analysis has revealed that results of the similar order of magnitude are obtained in implementation of two numerical methods in which computational grids are used, while the method in which computational grid is not used, i.e. the smoothed particle hydrodynamics method, requires further improvements to enable successful modelling of the gradually variable flow.

AB - In this paper, a novel data assimilation method for operational reservoir management on the Danube river section between Novi Sad and Iron Gate I is presented. The proposed data assimilation method allows discharges of river flow simulation model to be updated in near real time according to results of continuous water surface levels measurements. The model discharges are adjusted according to difference between measured and calculated water surface elevations using so-called PI controllers at locations where water levels measurements take place. The effect of different number of PI controllers on method effectiveness and stability are studied for different scenarios. The recommendations for method improvement are given at the end of the paper.
AB - U radu se predstavlja jedna od mogućih metoda asimilacije, korišćenja kontinualnih merenja nivoa vode duž Dunava za ažuriranje numeričkog modela tečenja Dunavom od Novog Sada do HE "Đerdap 1", napravljenog za potrebe HIS "Đerdap". Opisana metoda omogućava kontinualno, u realnom vremenu, usaglašavanje stanja računskog modela i stvarnog sistema, putem postepene korekcije nivoa promenom nepouzdanih dotoka u modelu.

AB - The lattice-Boltzmann method (LBM) is a new method in computational fluid mechanics. While traditional numerical methods directly discretize and solve the macroscopic equations of fluid mechanics, the LBM solves а discrete kinetic equation that reproduces the equations of fluid mechanics in the macroscopic sense. This paper presents in some detail the concept of the distribution function which is essential for the LBM, the Boltzmann equation and the Chapman-Enskog expansion used to reproduce the macroscopic equations of fluid mechanics from the Boltzmann equation. The paper also presents the procedure used for discretizing the Bolzmann equation in velocity and physical space in order to obtain the lattice-Boltzmann equation.

AB - Although the lattice-Boltzmann method (LMB) originates from the kinetic theory of gases, it can be adopted for many practical engineering uses. This paper explores the potential of the LBM in computational hydraulics. The discrete latticeBoltzmann equation is implemented using the appropriate equilibrium distribution function to simulate flow in a simple open channel. Numerical tests are conducted in order to assess the ability of the numerical model based on the LBM to reproduce steady state situations, slip and no-slip boundary conditions on impermeable walls, upstream and downstream boundary conditions commonly used in hydraulic engineering. The paper also presents the results of unsteady flow simulations, as well as flow simulations over a non-uniform channel bed.

AB - The application of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method (SPH) in freesurface flow modelling is analysed in this dissertation. For this purpose, twodifferent versions of the SPH model are used. The first model deals with the3D flow, while the second one is used for solving shallow water equations.Since the previous theoretical analyses have not confirmed stability of the SPHmethod, there was an interest to assess the accuracy of the SPH method in differentengineering problems. In addition to the analysis of unsteady phenomena, special attention is given to the assessment of the method’s ability to simulatesteady flow. The accuracy of the SPH method is evaluated in solving dambreakproblems, the supercritical flow in a circular bend and the 2D-flow innatural watercourses. Two standard SPH models are used in this dissertation, both of which were modified (improved) in order to simulate the studied phenomena.Modifications of the models are made to obtain proper modelling of boundaryconditions, energy dissipation process and fluid-structures interaction...

AB - The paper discusses a capability of SPH method in modeling of supercritical flow in circular
conduit bends. The DualSPHysics code is supplemented with algorithm for appropriate modelling of upstream boundary conditions at the upstream end of the computational domain. The model is calibrated against available experimental data. It is shown that appropriate choice of the artificial viscosity coefficient can lead to correct presentation of the bend flow type.

AB - The SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) method for solving fluid dynamics equations is presented in this paper. The main aim of this paper is to present theoretical aspects of the method which is used in numerical modelling of rapidly varying free-surface flows. This paper also deals with application of The SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) method in numerical modelling of impact flow on a vertical wall which is generated by the break of a dam. Numerical results show good agreement with experiments before water impact on the wall and unsatisfactory agreement after the impact. Further study is needed to improve accuracy of the method.
