Assessment of traffic-induced building vibrations using Transfer function method

AB  - As a result of rapid development of cities and construction of high-speed rail/road infrastructure, vibration serviceability of buildings due to traffic-induced vibrations has become a growing issue that affects the comfort of living and health of building occupants. In this paper a numerical study in which the influence of soil stiffness on the traffic-induced vibrations of an eight-story residential building is investigated considering soil-structure interaction and applying the substructuring approach and transfer function method. The results are presented in terms of transfer functions for selected points of interests inside the building. The results show that the resonant response of the structure occurs at lower frequencies for soft soil and at higher frequencies for stiff soil, indicating that soil-structure interaction can significantly affect the vibration response of the building.

AB  - The dynamic response of rigid and flexible three-dimensional (3D) foundations of arbitrary shape, placed on a homogeneous or layered halfspace, which may contain a finite, longitudinally invariant structure or inhomogeneity, is determined numerically. A 2.5D coupled Integral Transform Method (ITM) - Finite Element Method (FEM) approach is used to compute the dynamic compliance at the surface of the stratified soil with inclusion, whereas 3D ITM fundamental solutions are applied in case of a homogeneous or layered subgrade. The foundation is modelled by 3D finite elements in both cases and coupled to the underlying ground by enforcing the compatibility conditions at the interface. Compliance functions at the soil foundation interface are presented and compared with existing solutions for verification as well as displacement distributions within the underlying ground are illustrated. The influence of the foundation stiffness on the total response as well as on the frequency dependent power transmission into the soil due to different load types is studied. Finally, the method is applied to evaluate the influence of a tunnel and a stiff cylindrical inclusion on the dynamic response of the foundation, thereby demonstrating the importance of taking into account the Structure-Soil-Structure-Interaction (SSSI).

Application of Arduino Platform for Measuring Mechanical Vibrations

AB  - This paper presents the usage of open source hardware and software for measuring mechanical vibrations. The process of constructing the vibration measurement system including the Arduino UNO R3 ATmega328P microcontroller and Analog Devices ADXL335 accelerometer is described. The program for data acquisition is written in C++. The program for signal processing is written in Python. Vibrations are measured on the steel beam with overhangs. The obtained results are compared with the results measured with the MGCplus data acquisition system and Silicon Design 2240-002 accelerometer.

AB  - A semi-analytical method deals with vertical vibrations of a massive, flexible rectangular foundation smoothly jointed to an elastic, homogeneous halfspace is presented. The method is based on the solution in frequency domain that represents a combination of the Integral Transform Method (ITM) used for the soil and the Dynamic Stiffness Method (DSM) used for the foundation. The coupling of the foundation and the soil is established using the modal superposition technique. The influence of the foundation mass and the foundation stiffness on the response of the system is analyzed. The accuracy of the results obtained by using the proposed technique is also discussed.

AB  - This paper presents a novel method, ITM- DSM, for the soil-foundation interaction problems analysis. It is a semi-numerical method based on the coupling of the Integral Transform Method (ITM) and the Dynamic Stiffness Method (DSM). The stiffness matrix of the soil-foundation system is obtained using the substructure technique. The ITM is used to obtain the solution of the wave propagation in the soil, while the DSM is used to calculate the dynamic stiffness matrix of the foundation. Both methods are operating in the frequency domain what makes them suitable for coupling. The number of numerical operations in the frequency domain is reduced by the application of the modal superposition technique. The analysis of vertical vibrations of flexible foundations resting on the viscoelastic half-space is presented. The formulation of the method could be generalized for horizontal and rocking vibrations. It could be also reduced to the problem of flexible strip foundations of infinite length.

AB  - Тема овог рада је анализа вертикалних вибрација флексибилног тракастог темеља фундираног на површини еластичног, хомогеног полупростора. Претпоставка је да се темељ у попречном пресеку понаша као Ојлер-Бернулијева греда и да између темеља и тла не постоје клизања, нити дисконтинуитет у пољу померања. Проблем је решен у фреквентном домену применом методе подструктура. Темељ је анализиран применом Методе динамичке крутости, док је у анализи тла примењена Метода интегралне трансформације. Ефекат интеракције између темеља и тла решен је примeном модалне матрице крутости тла. Применом наведеног поступка, одређена је динамичка крутост у тежишту темеља. Приказани су резултати параметарске анализе у којој је варирана флексибилност темеља и функција оптерећења темеља. Показано је да конвергенција резултата зависи од типа проблема који се анализира.
AB  - This paper deals with vertical vibrations of а flexible strip foundation resting on the surface of an elastic, homogeneous halfspace. The assumption is that the foundation acts as an Euler-Bernoulli beam, cross- section wise, and there is no sliding, nor discontinuities in terms of displacements between the foundation and the soil. Problem is solved in the frequency domain using the substructure method. The foundation is analyzed using the Dynamic Stiffness Method, while the soil is analysed using the Integral Transform Method. The interaction effect between the foundation and the soil is solved by applying a modal soil stiffness matrix. Using the procedure described above, the dynamic stiffness, relative to the centre of flexible foundation, is calculated. The parametric analysis that considers the variation of the stiffness of the foundation and the loading function is presented. It is shown that the convergence of the results depends on the type of the problem that is analyzed.

AB  - This paper deals with the analysis of the dynamic response of the flexible strip foundation resting on the surface of the soil. Plane strain steady state analysis is considered. The cross section of the foundation behaves as an Euler-Bernoulli beam. There is no sliding between the foundation and the soil. The problem is solved using sub-structuring technique, considering two sub-structures: 
the foundation and the soil. The foundation is modeled using the Dynamic stiffness method (DSM) and the soil using the Integral transform method (ITM). Both DSM and ITM are based on Fourier transforms, operating in space-frequency or wavenumber-frequency domain. The coupling of the sub-structures is obtained using modal superposition approach. Vertical and 
horizontal response of the strip foundation is calculated for different soil/foundation stiffness ratio and for different frequencies.  Presented results show the influence of the excitation frequency and foundation stiffness on displacement field of the foundation.

The paper describes the vibrations generation and propagation as well as the estimation of the effects of vibrations on objects and people with a reference to German and British standards. Empirical and numerical models for the traffic induced vibrations analysis based on the performed measurements were presented.

Temelj je modelirankorišcenjem Metode spektralnih elemenata, na osnovu koje je odre eno tacno rešenjediferencijalnih jednacina kretanja talasa u ploci u domenu prostornih koordinata ifrekvencija. Tlo je modelirano korišcenjem Metode integralne transformacije. Metodaje bazirana na analitickom rešenju Laméovih diferencijalnih jednacina kretanja udomenu talasnih brojeva i frekvencija. Diferencijalna jednacina sistema tlo-temeljriješena je u domenu prostornih koordinata i frekvencija korišcenjem metode modalnesuperpozicije. Predstavljeni postupak je iskorišcen za sracunavanje aproksimativnoganalitickog rešenja problema površinskih temelja bez mase. Sracunati su odgovorisledecih sistema: kruti kvadratni temelj na poluprostoru, sistem krutih kvadratnihtemelja na sloju iznad krute baze, fleksibilni trakasti temelj na poluprostoru ifleksibilni kvadratni temelj na poluprostoru. Glavni doprinos predloženog postupkaogleda se u rešavanju problema interakcije tla i fleksibilnih temelja.

AB  - The dynamic response of rigid and flexible foundations on the soil has been subject of extensive study in the past decades. A hybrid method using a combined finite element method (FEM) and boundary element method (BEM) is the most common method used for solving this problem. The objective of this paper is to present an effective frequency domain method to obtain the dynamic response of a flexible strip foundation resting on a viscoelastic halfspace. The foundation is treated with the spectral element method (SEM), while the soil is modelled using the integral transform method (ITM). Both SEM and ITM are based on the analytical solution of the Lame-equations in the frequency domain and therefore are suitable for combining. The solution is obtained in the transformed space-frequency or wavenumber-frequency domain using the Fourier transformation. The study is performed as a 2D plane-strain analysis, assuming that the foundation cross-section behaves as an Euler-Bernoulli beam and that there is no sliding between the foundation and the soil, nor discontinuities in terms of the displacement field. The vertical displacements field of the foundation is described by a set of modal functions corresponding to free vibration mode shapes of a SEM Euler-Bernoulli beam element. The coupling between the foundation and the soil is achieved using the modal soil impedance functions, which are determined by using the ITM. The displacements of the coupled foundation-soil system are solved by the modal superposition method. The accuracy of the proposed method is assessed by comparing the obtained results with the results obtained by a commercial software package SASSI2000. The comparison shows that the presented method is accurate and less costly in terms of computational effort, especially in the high frequency range. The presented method can be easily extended to provide the solution of the response of a flexible strip on a layered halfspace due to a horizontal and vertical excitation.

AB  - Numerical model of the soil is an essential part of the dynamic soil – structure interaction analysis. The soil model should take into account various phenomena that may occur due to dynamic loading, first of all radiation damping. In this paper, the damping phenomena is investigated by comparing the results of two different modeling approaches: analytical and discrete. Analytical model, developed by author, is obtained by using Integral transform method, based on Lame's differential equations solution. Discrete model is based on the finite element method and commercial software package Abaqus. Soil is considered an elastic, homogeneous and isotropic halfspace. Vertical vibrations due to dynamic force are considered. The results, presented for 3 characteristic frequencies, are in good agreement.

AB  - In this paper the dynamic interaction of two rigid massless foundations resting on the finite depth soil medium layer. The vertical response of a loaded and unloaded foundation of a layer over a bedrock is calculated by Integral transform method (ITM). This method is based on analytical solution of the Lamé`s differential equations of motion. A parametric analysis of vertical vibrations as a function of soil depth is carried out using a computer program developed in MATLAB. The obtained results are presented.

AB  - In this paper the effects of soil-structure interaction (SSI) on reinforced concrete (RC) buildings are analyzed. The dynamic analysis was carried out for two buildings of different heights, founded on three different types of soils, and two different types of foundation, with and without soil interaction. Ten earthquake records, chosen for Belgrade site, were used in the response spectrum analysis. The mean spectrum at the base of the soil deposit and the mean spectra at the surface of each soil types were derived. Calculation was performed using the originally coded MATLAB program, which accounts for downward and upward wave propagation. The influence of the soil layer over the bedrock on the response of the RC buildings was calculated using the commercial software SAP2000. The conclusions were carried out according to theobtained results.

First, the compliances for one rigid foundation on the half space are calculated and compared with the results from the literature. AB  - A simple numerical model for the dynamic analysis of 20 frames in the frequency domain, based on the Spectral Element Method (SEM), is presented in the paper. The influence of soil-structure interaction is taken into account. The dynamic stiffness of rigid foundations is determined by the Integral Transform Method (ITM). Three frames with a different number of storeys are analyzed with respect to vibrations caused by tram and road traffic. The influence of the soil-structure interaction on modal frequencies and amplitudes of vibrations is considered. The assessment of the way in which humans are affected by traffic-induced vibrations is conducted according to British Standard BS:6472.

AB  - The wave propagation on the surface of a half-space due to a moving load is
analyzed using the Integral Transform Method. By using of the Helmholtz’s decomposition
and threefold Fourier transformation the body wave equation is transformed in the wave
number-frequency domain and solved numerically. The obtained displacement field is
transformed in time domain by the Inverse Fourier Transform. The analysis is carried out
using computer program written in MATLAB program language. The load is vertical
sinusoidal force P=1 MN moving along the line defined by x=0 with constant speed. The
influence of source velocity on the displacements of the half-space and on the frequency
content of the displacements at three locations at different distances from the load line is
presented.

AB  - The development of the dynamic stiffness matrix of rectangular plate with symmetrically distributed
edge beams using Spectral Element Method (SEM) has been presented in this paper. It is assumed that beams are
ideally attached to the plate, which means that the displacements and rotations of the beams and the edge of the
plate are equal at all points along the beam. The Projection method and Gorman’s superposition method were used
to develop the dynamic stiffness matrix for the transverse vibration of plate with arbitrary boundary conditions.
The efficiency and accuracy of the developed dynamic stiffness matrix has been demonstrated on several
numerical examples with different type of boundary conditions. For that purpose the computer program has been
developed using Matlab.

abstract = "The development of the dynamic stiffness matrix of rectangular plate with symmetrically distributed
edge beams using Spectral Element Method (SEM) has been presented in this paper. It is assumed that beams are
ideally attached to the plate, which means that the displacements and rotations of the beams and the edge of the
plate are equal at all points along the beam. The Projection method and Gorman’s superposition method were used
to develop the dynamic stiffness matrix for the transverse vibration of plate with arbitrary boundary conditions.
The efficiency and accuracy of the developed dynamic stiffness matrix has been demonstrated on several
numerical examples with different type of boundary conditions. For that purpose the computer program has been
developed using Matlab.",

Wave propagation due to a moving load

AB  - The wave propagation on the surface of a half-space due to a moving load is analyzed using the Integral Transform Method. By using of the Helmholtz’s decomposition and threefold Fourier transformation the body wave equation is transformed in the wave number-frequency domain and solved numerically. The obtained displacement field is transformed in time domain by the Inverse Fourier Transform. The analysis is carried out using computer program written in MATLAB program language. The load is vertical sinusoidal force P=1 MN moving along the line defined by x=0 with constant speed. The influence of source velocity on the displacements of the half-space and on the frequency content of the displacements at three locations at different distances from the load line is presented.

AB  - U ovom radu dat je pregled postupaka za procenu vibracija izazvanih dejstvom
saobraćaja, definisanih postojećim britanskim i nemačkim propisima. Procena i
predviđanje dejstva vibracija od saobraćaja na objekte i ljude prikazan je na primeru
vibracija od saobraćaja na 24 objekta u Bulevaru kralja Aleksandra u Beogradu.
AB  - Procedures for assessment of traffic induced vibrations in buildings, according to the
existing British and German’s standards, are presented in this paper. Analysis of effects
of traffic induced vibrations on buildings and building residents, as well as vibration
prediction is carried out on 24 buildings in Boulevard of King Alexander in Belgrade.

AB  - This paper presents a numerical study of the dynamic response of 3D structure subjected to a vertical moving load using substructure approach in the frequency domain. The dynamic system consists of two substructures, the unbounded soil region and the 3D structure. The soil is considered as an elastic, homogeneous and isotropic half-space. The impedance functions of the soil, as well as the dynamic response of the half-space to a moving vehicle are determined using the Integral Transform Method (ITM). The vertical vibrations of the structure are calculated using the Spectral Element Method. Based on this theoretical consideration, the numerical analysis is carried out and the obtained results are presented.
