AB - This study contributes to the field of wind engineering by evaluating the local peak pressure coefficients in a generic high-rise building cluster. Unlike previous studies that have focused on isolated buildings or buildings in tandem arrangements, this research considers the impact of four buildings when surrounding the principal one. Both experimental and numerical techniques are applied, demonstrating the capabilities of the LES method in predicting the local peak pressure. The obtained results offer new insights into the complex interplay between buildings and the wind
environment in high-rise building clusters, especially in the roof zone. The experiments reveal higher peak suction for the building in the group than the isolated at all wind angles. The minimum negative peak pressure coefficient of 5.8 is recorded at a 45° wind angle. Validation of the obtained numerical results shows the promising potential of the LES as a design tool in wind engineering, providing higher resolution of the quantities of interest.

AB - Urbanisation brought an increasing prevalence of groups of high-rise buildings and raised new questions about their impact on local wind flow conditions and the wind energy harvesting potential. The focus of this study is two-fold. First, it gives insight into the interference effects around high-rise buildings based on the level of building exposure to the wind and the position of surrounding buildings. Second, it addresses wind energy resources above the roof in terms of the Wind Power Density (WPD), turbulence intensities and skew angle.

Three study cases are defined from two configurations: The isolated high-rise building and the group configuration of five identical buildings in two different arrangements. Two wind directions are included, 0°and 45°. Validated large-eddy simulations are used due to their superior simulation capabilities.

The strongest separation around the building is noted in the group configuration when the two upstream buildings produce the “channelling effect” and with other surrounding buildings compress the flow around the central one. Regarding wind energy harvesting, maximal value of 2.5 is recorded at 45°wind angle in the “cross” shape arrangement. Considering the different wind turbine types, vertical-axis wind turbines seem the most promising option for wind energy harvesting above the roof.

AB - This study uses validated Large-eddy simulations to investigate the impact of the building exposure on the flow field around the principal building placed in the turbulent atmospheric boundary layer. The prismatic 1:3 square high-rise building model is analysed, considering three configurations: one isolated building model and two group arrangements of five geometrically identical buildings. Four exposure cases are singled out: model directly exposed to the wind, in single and group arrangement, partly exposed model placed in the channel between four buildings and completely shaded one by the building in front. Flow visualisation above the roof shows a strong dependency on the size of the separation zone and the exposure level. The results will be further used to predict the wind energy potential around buildings as well as the pedestrian level winds.

AB - To understand the favourable locations for maximum yield of urban wind energy, understanding the flow pattern on the roof region of high-rise buildings is crucial. However, very few studies in the literature report on the wind energy resource using high-fidelity methods, which combined with the lack of wind tunnel investigations, explains the failure of urban wind energy as a viable contributor to the renewable energy mix. This work aims at proposing a strategy for the reliable evaluation of the wind energy resource by building on validated Large Eddy Simulation and performance maps based on the wind power density and the turbulence intensity above the roof of a prismatic 1:3 square building. Analyses include the effect of flat and decked roof shapes in two wind directions. Results around the facade reveal zones of accelerated flow close to separation edges, while above the roof, a higher potential is noticeable at 45◦, than at 0◦. Decking of the roof shows insensitivity to the change in wind direction. The tested methodology can be extended to other configurations to predict the wind energy potential as well as used to indicate the positioning of wind turbines in the built environment.

AB - The human migration from rural to urban areas has triggered a chain reaction causing the spiking energy demand of cities worldwide. High-rise buildings filling the urban skyline could potentially provide a means to improve the penetration of renewable wind energy by installing wind turbines at their rooftop. However, the above roof flow region has not received much attention and most results deal with low-rise buildings. This study investigates the flow pattern above the roof of a high-rise building by analysing velocity and pressure measurements performed in an atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel, including four wind directions and two different roof shapes. Comparison of the surface pressure patterns on the flat roof with available low-rise building studies shows that the surface pressure contours are consistent for a given wind direction. At 0◦ wind direction, a separation bubble is detected, while cone vortices dominate at 30◦ and 45◦. The determining factor for the installation of small wind turbines is the vicinity to the roof. Thus, 45◦ wind direction shows to be the most desirable angle by bringing the substantial amplification of wind and keeping the turbulence intensity low. Decking the roof creates favourable characteristics by overcoming the sensitivity to the wind direction while preserving the speed-up effect.

AB - Thin-walled cylindrical and conical shells represent one of the most complex structural elements considering their behaviour and susceptibility to buckling. A brief theoretical review including the presentation of different currently available design recommendations is given in this paper. Influence of initial imperfections on nonlinear behaviour of cylindrical and conical shells is also presented through numerical analysis. Shells with different wall thicknesses and different values of initial imperfections, but constant length and diameter of shell are analysed. Numerical analysis includes materially and geometrically nonlinear analysis of cylindrical and conical shells, using experimentally obtained stress-strain relation of carbon steel and stainless steel. Material nonlinearity and initial geometrical imperfections resulted in significantly lower buckling resistance of shells.

AB - Aim of this paper is to investigate wind pressure distribution on low-rise industrial
building based on the results from atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel experiments.
Building model is a hanger with a tilted roof with an inclination of 5°. Values of mean and
fluctuating pressure coefficients measured on the surface of the roof and side walls of the
model are discussed in the paper. Five wind approaching angles are considered: 0°, 15°,
30°, 45° and 90°. The investigation can offer some basic understanding of wind behaviour
and effects on low-rise industrial buildings regarding different wind angles.

fluctuating pressure coefficients measured on the surface of the roof and side walls of the
model are discussed in the paper. Five wind approaching angles are considered: 0°, 15°,
30°, 45° and 90°. The investigation can offer some basic understanding of wind behaviour
and effects on low-rise industrial buildings regarding different wind angles.",

AB - An experimental investigation has been conducted in order to give insight into wind flow characteristics in urban areas, in particular, its effects on low-rise buildings. Analyses are based on the results from atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel experiments. Building model is a 1/75th scale model of a low-rise tilted house with roof inclination of 45°. Aiming to introduce the effects of neighbouring buildings, a comparative study of two configurations is presented, one with isolated principle building and another with four similar buildings surrounding the principle one. Additionally, the influence of the wind approaching angle is considered through the analyses of three directions: 0°, 45° and 90°. Wind velocity profiles above the roof of the principal building and pressure distribution on its surface are analysed in the paper.

AB - In this paper, pressure field over the roof of low-rise building model has been investigating using numerical simulations. The model is surrounded by four neighboring buildings of the same geometry as the principle one. The wind behavior around the building was simulated at wind angle of 45 degrees. Numerical calculations are performed using open-source code OpenFOAM. - Analysis solver for incompressible flow was applied using the Large Eddy Simulation (LES). The effect of different mesh types and inflow conditions are discussed. Two inlet definitions was implemented, one without prescribed turbulence, with the stream-wise velocity profile from the wind tunnel (WT), and another with the incoming flow turbulence synthetically generated using the divergence-free synthetic eddy method (DFSEM). Numerical results of pressure distributions statistics are analyzed and systematically compared to the referenced experimental data. The results show that there is a significant influence of the inlet definition on the mean and standard deviation of the pressure coefficient.

AB - Thin-walled cylindrical shells represent one of the most complex constructive elements, considering their behaviour and susceptibility to buckling. In this paper is given a brief theoretical review including the presentation of different currently available design recommendations. Influence of initial imperfections on nonlinear behaviour of cylindrical shells is also presented through numerical analysis. Cylindrical shells with different wall thicknesses and different values of initial imperfections, but constant length and diameter of
shell are analysed. Numerical analysis includes materially and geometrically nonlinear analysis of cylindrical shells, using experimentally obtained stress-strain relation of carbonsteel and
stainless steel. Material nonlinearity and initial geometrical imperfections resulted in significantly lower buckling resistance of cylindrical shells.

AB - In order to increase wind energy harvesting from urban environment, the wind be- havior and the effect of the surrounding buildings needs to be fully understood. In this paper, wind tunnel experiments of the flow around a high-rise building with a height to width ratio of 3:1 surrounded by four high-rise buildings of the same geometry were performed to investigate the interference effect on the above roof flow. The buildings were mounted in an environmental boundary layer resembling that of a built environment and velocity measurements over the top of the principal building were performed. Four different wind angles, with respect to the side of the high-rise building, were investigated experimentally; 0°, 15°, 30°, and 45°.

In cases where the dimensioning section should be done according to the theory of critical load then the solution static actions, at the moment just before the break, should be find from the inelastic solutions. Methods for the calculation of reinforced concrete structures at the time of failure, developed to date are based on the solutions of Theory of plasticity(ТP). In this connection, with a reinforced concrete slab, the paper describes the particular case, which concerns the formation of the plastic hinge line, known as the Yield line theory(YL). With in the (YL)are described kinematic and static theorem. For examples of simply supported and fixed reinforced concrete slabs are defined upper and lower load limit value. In the software package Sofistik there are analyzed examples of reinforced concrete plate in the form of defining the shape line fracture in comparison to the realistic forms of line fracture.

AB - The review of the Reissner-Mindlin's (RM) theory of bending of rectangular plates is presented in this paper. Presented are the advantages and disadvantages of RM theory, its application and finite elements (FE) for solving plate bending by RM theory. The Wolfram Mathematica software package is used to create LESAP program code with built-in algorithm for calculation of the plate bending. The results for a given number of examples, which include accuracy, convergence and the speed of the solutions convergence, are compared with the results obtained using the software package ABAQUS.
