AB - The exchange discharge model (EDM) is the model that was developed for the estimation of a stage-discharge curve and flood routing in compound channels. It was thoroughly tested against experimental data in different compound channel layouts. However, there is a little evidence on its application in rivers. This paper studies EDM performance in estimating stage-discharge curve at two gauging stations on the same river with different hydraulic conditions and compares its results with the traditional, divided channel method (DCM). The contribution of momentum fluxes due to turbulence diffusion and mass exchange to the total energy loss are analysed. It is found that EDM parameter values (ψt and ψg) depend on the hydraulic conditions at a gauging station. In the case of M1-type water surface profile, the ψt-value increases and the
effect of mass transfer is negligible. In the case of M2-type profile, the ψt-value decreases and the momentum flux due to mass transfer becomes dominant. Nonetheless, the lower ψt-value does not result in smaller additional loss due to turbulence diffusion, since the velocity difference between the main channel and the floodplain increases. Although the EDM and DCM provide approximately the same total discharge, EDM gives more realistic discharge distribution (main channel discharge is reduced and that on the floodplain is increased by 30-40% due to mass transfer caused by non-prismaticity of the channel).

AB - The hydraulic engineering community has been making continuous efforts to improve the
procedure for estimation of a stage discharge curve in a compound channel over the last twenty five years. The reason for this is the fact that tests in laboratory conditions have shown that the classical approach based on the divided channel method, which uses Manning’s equation, overestimates the discharge by more than 60% for high floodplain submergence ratios (> 0.3). Mathematical models that were developed and/or improved during this period were primarily tested using uniform or non-uniform flow data from laboratory flumes. This paper aims at applying one of these models in estimating the stage discharge curve under the flood conditions at one gauging station. More precisely, this will be the exchange discharge model, which is a 1D flow model. Apart from the momentum exchange due to turbulent diffusion, this model also considers the momentum exchange due to mass transfer between the main channel and floodplains, as rivers and streams have non-prismatic channels. The Slovac gauging station on the Kolubara River will be used for the case study, since there are floods observation data for this station available. The discharge values obtained for the highest recorded water levels
using the classical approach (divided channel method) and the exchange discharge method will be compared with the official records of the Republic hydrometeorological service of Serbia.

AB - Parameters of 1D confluence models are originally defined for concordant beds’ (CB’s) confluences. This paper aims at estimating these parameters for discordant beds’ confluences using numerical simulation results of 3D flow. A 3D finite-volume based model SSIIM2 that was successfully validated in CB’s confluences is applied in this study, too. Confluences with the low, moderate and maximal observed bed elevation discordance ratio values are analysed for three characteristic hydrological scenarios: dominance of the tributary flow, equal contributions of the combining flows and dominance of the main-river flow. It is shown that: 1) the mean flow angle δ approaches junction angle α with the increase in bed elevation discordance, especially when tributary flow dominates, 2) the value of Hager’s correction coefficient σ is not constant and 3) the contribution of the tributary flow to the 1D momentum equation is under predicted when either parameter δ or σ is used for its estimation.

AB - The paper aims at presenting possibilities of the exchange discharge model (EDM) in 1D non-prismatic compound channel flow modelling to the Serbian hydraulic engineering community. The model has been already successfully applied for the estimation of a rating curve in a two-stage channel based on the recorded water level, but it can be also used for the estimation of the slope of the energy grade-line for non-uniform flow calculations in a flooding river once the flood discharge is known. As such, the EDM can be used both in the flood risk assessment and the reconstruction of the flood event. The model is calibrated and tested against the experimental data from straight, non-prismatic channels with symmetrically enlarging and symmetrically narrowing floodplains with different degrees of expansion and contraction (gradual and abrupt expansions / contractions). Moreover, the model results are compared to those obtained with the traditional models that are still used in everyday engineering practice. It is readily demonstrated that traditional models underestimate water levels by more than 10%, while the EDM provides better agreement with measured ones (discrepancies are less than 3%). Acceptable level of agreement is also attained with the discharge distribution between the main channel and floodplains – discrepancies do not exceed 3%, and in one case only they reach 8%.

The model is calibrated and tested against the experimental data from straight, non-prismatic channels with symmetrically enlarging and symmetrycaly narrowing floodplains with different degrees of expansion and contraction (gradual and abrupt expansions / contractions). Moreover, the model results are compared to those obtained with the traditional models that are still used in everyday engineering practice. It is readily demonstrated that traditional models underestimate water levels by more than 10%, while the EDM provides better agreement with measured ones (discrepancies are less than 3%). Acceptable level of agreement is also attained with the discharge distribution between the main channel and floodplanes - discrepancies do not exceed 3%, and in one case only they reach 8%.

AB - The role of the difference in bed elevations in the main-river (ΔzMR) and the tributary (ΔzT) at their entrance to a 90° straight-channel confluence is studied numerically using a 3D finite-volume model. Three characteristic hydrological scenarios with DR = QMR/Qtot = {0.250, 0.583, 0.750} (where QMR and Qtot are flow discharges in the main-river upstream and downstream of the confluence, respectively) are analysed in nine confluence layouts having ΔzMR/hd ε[0.10, 0.50] and ΔzT/hd ε[0.10, 0.50] (where hd stands for the flow depth in the deeper channel at the confluence). It is found that the presence of the bed-step in the main river: 1) does not affect the flow and bed shear stress distributions for DR = 0.250, 2) causes inclination of the recirculation zone and reduces its size for DR > 0.5, 3) favours conditions for the bed-load transport both in and far downstream of the confluence when DR ≠ 0.750 regardless of the ΔzT-value.

AB - Bathymetric surveys in confluences of both alluvial and mountaneous rivers have shown that a bed step at a tributary entrance to the confluence is a common morphological feature and that it may also develop in the main-river. Thus, this paper aims at studying how the presence of the bed step in either upstream channel and the extent of bed elevation discordance (i.e. bed step height) affect contribution of the tributary flow to the 1Dmomentum equation. To this aim, a 3D model is used to find distributions of the flow angle and the momentum-flux in the downstream cross-section of the tributary under three possible scenarios in the confluence:DR= QR/ Qn = {0,250; 0,583; 0,750}, where QR and Qnare flow discharges in the main-river upstream and downstrem of the confluence. Effects of three extents of bed elevation discordance in both channels are analysed: ΔzP/ hn= {0,10; 0,25; 0,50} and ΔzR/ hn= {0,10; 0,25; 0,50},where ΔzP and ΔzR stand for bed step heights in the tributary and the main-river and hn stands for the flow depth in the main-river at the confluence. Distributions are used to calculate the component of the tributary force of inertia that acts in tha main-river direction IPx, and parameters of 1D confluence models that are used for its estimation, i.e. the mean cross-sectional flow angle δ and σ – the correction coefficient for this angle. It is found that the bed step in the tributary and the step with the heighest extent of bed elevation discordance in the river reduce contribution of the tributary flow to 1D momentum equation from 8% to 58%, while that in the main-river with low and moderate extent increase its contribution by 15-30% depending on the DR-value. It is also shown that the value of Hager’s correction coefficient σ is not constant. It rather depends on both parameters (DR and Δz / hn). In that respect the best-fitting curves σ(DR) are found for each cascade.

AB - The paper studies a combined effect of bed steps (BS) in both converging channels on the 3D flow in a confluence with α = 90o. Nine combinations of bed elevation discordance ratio values in the two channels are analysed. It is shown that:1) a portion of the tributary flow is redirected upstream and that the vertical flow deflection in the lower half of water column is significantly reduced when the BS in the main river is higher than that in the tributary, 2) the shape of the recirculation zone (RZ) and the delay in its development are strongly governed by the presence of the BS in the tributary, whereas the BS in the main river only affects the size of the RZ and the dynamics of its distortion and 3) both river banks are endangered by erosion in confluences with BSs in both converging channels.

AB - Bathymetric surveys in confluences of both alluvial and mountaneous rivers have shown that a bed step at a tributary entrance to the confluence is a common morphological feature and that it may also develop in the main-river. Thus, this paper aims at studying how the presence of the bed step in either upstream channel and the extent of bed elevation discordance (i.e. bed step height) affect contribution of the tributary flow to the 1D momentum equation. To this aim, a 3D model is used to find distributions of the flow angle and the momentumflux in the downstream cross-section of the tributary under three possible scenarios in the confluence: DR = QR / Qn = {0,250; 0,583; 0,750}, where QR and Qn are flow discharges in the main-river upstream and downstrem of the confluence. Effects of three extents of bed elevation discordance in both channels are analysed: ΔzP / hn = {0,10; 0,25; 0,50} and ΔzR / hn = {0,10; 0,25; 0,50}, where ΔzP and ΔzR stand for bed step heights in the tributary and the main-river and hn stands for the flow depth in the main-river at the confluence. Distributions are used to calculate the component of the tributary force of inertia that acts in tha main-river direction IPx, and parameters of 1D confluence models that are used for its estimation, i.e. the mean cross-sectional flow angle δ and σ - the correction coefficient for this angle. It is also shown that the value of Hager's correction coefficient σ is not constant. It rather depends on both parameters (DR and Δz / hn). In that respect the bestfitting curves σ(DR) are found for each cascade.

AB - The paper addresses problems with a stage-discharge curve estimation in a compound channel. Investigations into flow in compound channels that have been conducting during last 25 years undoubtedly indicated that traditional methods could not be considered as a reliable tool for discharge estimations. Thus, new 1D models, which account for the momentum exchange between the main channel and the floodplain, have been developed. Two computational approaches to solving the model equations are used – namely, the exchange discharge method
and the independent sections method. The quality of the two models is demonstrated through а comparison of the model results against measurements collected in four compound channel layouts that cover symmetrical and asymmetrical straight compound channels with smooth and rough floodplains. It is shown that discrepancies between the measured and calculated discharges are within the measurement error limit (< 8%), as well as that the discharge
distribution between the main channel and floodplains is well predicted with both approaches.

AB - A series of numerical experiments is conducted to determine how compound channel geometry and floodplain roughness affect both a momentum transfer between main channel and floodplains and its contribution to the total energy 'loss'. To this aim, a 1D, exchange discharge model, which accounts for the momentum exchange between the main channel and floodplains, is used. It is found that the contribution of the momentum exchange to the total energy 'loss' reduces on floodplains with the flow depth regardless of the compound channel geometry and floodplain roughness and that both, the momentum exchange and its contribution to the total energy 'loss', are increased in the following cases: 1) when the main channel aspect ratio decreases, 2) when compound channel is asymmetrical and 3) when the roughness of the floodplain increases. In the main channel, the variation in the momentum exchange contribution with the flow depth depends only on the floodplain roughness.

In the main channel, the variation in the momentum exchange contribution with the flow depth depends only on the floodplain roughness., U radu je sproveden niz numeričkih ogleda sa ciljem da se utvrdi kako geometrija korita za veliku vodu (KVV) i rapavost plavnih površina utiču na razmenu količine kretanja (RKK) između glavnog korita i plavnih površina i njen udeo u ukupnom 'gubitku' mehaničke energije toka.

AB - This paper aims at introducing a novel approach to 1D compound channel flow modelling to the Serbian hydraulic engineering community. To this aim an Exchange Discharge Model (EDM) is presented, first. The model can be used both for the estimation of a rating curve in a two-stage channel based on the recorded water level, and the slope of the energy grade-line for non-uniform flow calculations in a flooding river once the flood discharge is known. EDM is calibrated and tested against the benchmark data from the Flood Channel Facility at HR Wallingford, UK. An effect of two different controls on the rating curve is analysed – the effect of a floodplain to main-channel width ratio (B / b) and that of the floodplain roughness. Moreover, the model is compared to traditional models that are still used in everyday engineering practice (single channel and divided channel methods, SCM and DCM), to an empirically based Ackers’ method and one physically based method proposed by Radojković. It is readily demonstrated that physically based models that account for momentum exchange between the main-channel and floodplains provide almost perfect fit to measurements, while the DCM method over predicts the discharge value.

AB - In many cases a river confluce is characterised by a development of an avalanshe face (bed step) at a tributary entrance to а confluence. The development is caused by a deposition of coarser sediments that are arriving from the tributary channel and it results in bed elevation discordance between the lateral and main channels. The paper aims at studying effects of a bed step on: 1) a momentum transfer from a tributary to the main channel under different hydrological scenarios and 2) values of parameters in 1D confluence models. Four characteristic values of
the bed elevation discordance ratio ΔzP / hn = {0,00; 0,10; 0,25; 0,50}, including the concordant beds' case, are considered for the following discharge ratio values between the main river channels upstream and downstream of a confluence: DR = {0,250; 0,583; 0,750}. It is shown that: 1) the flow deflection at the tributary entrance to the confluence reduces with an increase in the bed step height and 2) the component of a tributary force of inertia, which acts in the direction of the main channel flow, is overestimated in a concordant beds' confluence and a
discordant beds' confluence with the maximal bed step height (ΔzP = 0,50 hn).when calculated using an average flow deflection angle value.

AB - A series of numerical experiments is conducted to determine how compound channel geometry and floodplain roughness affect both a momentum transfer between main channel and floodplains and its contribution to the total energy “loss”. To this aim, a 1D, exchange discharge model, which accounts for the momentum exchange between the main channel and floodplains, is used. It is found that the contribution of the momentum exchange to the total energy “loss” reduces on floodplains with the flow depth regardless of the compound channel geometry and floodplain roughness and that both, the momentum exchange and its contribution to the total energy “loss”, are increased in the following cases: 1) when the main channel aspect ratio decreases, 2) when compound channel is asymmetrical and 3) when the roughness of the floodplain increases. In the main channel, the variation in the momentum exchange contribution with the flow depth depends only on the floodplain roughness.

AB - This paper aims at introducing a novel approach to 1D compound channel flow modelling to the Serbian hydraulic engineering community. To this aim an Exchange Discharge Model (EDM) is presented, first. The model can be used both for the estimation of a rating curve in a two-stage channel based on the recorded water level, and the slope of the energy grade-line for non-uniform flow calculations in a flooding river once the flood dis- charge is known. EDM is calibrated and tested against the benchmark data from the Flood Channel Facility at HR Wallingford, UK. An effect of two different controls on the rating curve is analysed the effect of a floodplain to main-channel width ratio (B / b) and that of the floodplain roughness. Moreover, the model is compared to traditional models that are still used in everyday engineering practice (single channel and divided channel methods, SCM and DCM), to an empirically based Ackers' method and one physically based method proposed by Radojković. It is readily demonstrated that physically based models that account for momentum exchange between the main-channel and floodplains provide almost perfect fit to measurements, while the DCM method over predicts the discharge value.
