AB - The design of the Beni Slimane Dam (Medea Province, Algeria) has been verified by scale model analyses, conducted on two separate physical models - the partial model of the labyrinth spillway and the complete model of flood evacuation structures. This paper describes the analyses carried out on the complete model, scaled 1:30. The initial design of the chute and stilling basin was optimized on the basis of model testing. Tests carried out on the scale model with a movable bottom (river bed) were very helpful for the design of downstream erosion protection.

AB - The stilling basin is one of the most frequently used energy dissipation structures due to highly-efficient energy dissipation of the main stream through the secondary turbulent flow in the hydraulic jump roller formed within the stilling basin. An important characteristic of this type of flow is pulsating pressure, which is especially pronounced on the bottom concrete slabs, side walls, and other concrete components of the stilling basin. Hydrodynamic loads on the bottom and side walls of the stilling basin are assessed in the paper, based on pressure measurements at selected points on the physical model. Measurements were made at a large number of test points, such that a reliable distribution of hydrodynamic loading was obtained under different flow conditions.

AB - Design of an RCC (roller-compacted concrete) dam had been verified using a scale model. The scale of the model was 1:40 and hydraulic parameters were scaled using Froude similarity. The aim of investigations were flood mitigation structures – a standard Creager profiled spillway crest (with five bays), a converging stepped chute and a stilling basin. The main problem of the initial design was selecting the optimal shape of stepped chute side walls. As the converging chutes generate standing waves, this results in significant increase of the water level in the zones in the vicinity of the walls. The final shape of the side walls had been selected through trial-and-error procedure, provideing the most favorable flow conditions. As a consequence, improving the flow conditions in the chute resulted in better flow conditions inside the stilling basin as well, so the proposed energy dissipation baffle blocks could be removed. For the final design, measurements of the hydraulic parameters (water levels, depths, velocities, pressures) on the scale model verified the implemented improvements (compared to the initial design).

AB - The design of the Beni Slimane Dam (Medea Province, Algeria) was verified by scale model analyses, conducted on two separate scale models: a partial model of labyrinth spillway and a complete model of spillway structures. Aeration of the labyrinth spillway, which was the focus of the study, could be properly assessed only by means of a large scaled model, so a partial model at a scale of 1:15 was used. The initial aeration design was improved on the basis of the model investigations. The spillway discharge coefficients, calculated from measured data, were compared to the values recommended in the literature. This paper describes the potential problems, investigation results and important conclusions, which should be kept in mind when labyrinth spillways are designed.

AB - Stepped spillways have been often used in RCC dams over the past twenty years, due to their efficiency in converting mechanical energy into heat and compliance with the technology and construction of RCC dams. Main characteristics of the prismatic stepped spillway with skimming flow can be described by empirical relationships. Scale model studies afford reliable assessment of the flow characteristics, particularly of the residual energy, if the scale effects are minimized. The measurement of flow characteristics is complex, due to the air-water flow mixture. It is expected that numerical modeling, with proper calibration and verification, will become an efficient tool for the stepped spillway design.

abstract = "The design of the RCC (roller-compacted concrete) Bouzina Dam (Batna Province, Algeria) was verified using a scale model. The length scale of the physical model was 1:40 and the hydraulic parameters were scaled applying the Froude similarity. The tests focused on a standard Creager profiled spillway crest (with five bays), a converging stepped chute and a stilling basin. The main design problem was selecting the optimal shape of the stepped chute side walls. The converging chute generated standing waves, resulting in a significant flow depth increase in the vicinity of the walls. The optimal shape of the side walls was selected through a trial-and-error procedure, ensuring the most favorable flow conditions. Improving the flow conditions in the chute resulted in better flow conditions inside the stilling basin as well, so that the initially proposed energy-dissipation baffle blocks could be removed. Measurements of hydraulic parameters (water levels, depths, velocities, pressures) on the scale model verified the proposed improvements (compared to the original design).",
