AB - In the paper, an algorithm to track a moving delamination front of arbitrary shape is proposed, which allows considering of arbitrary meshes composed of 4- and 9-node quadrilateral finite elements. The proposed model is developed in the context of a layered finite element plate model. To prevent interlaminar penetration of adjacent layers in the delaminated region, a contact algorithm proposed by the authors is adopted. The model performance is demonstrated by re-analyses of the Double-Cantilever-Beam problem, for which analytical solutions exist, and by transient analyses of laminated composite plates with propagating delamination fronts.

AB - Composite materials have the important applications in the automotive and aircraft industry, shipbuilding, civil engineering etc. Plate damages usually appear at local (single layer) level. One of the most common forms of damage is delamination. For this rea-son, it is of interest to develop the layerwise plate theories, which are capable to describe the plate kinematics for each layer individually. This paper presents extended General Layer-wise Theory, with emphasis on the analysis of delamination. The response of cracked plate is given through Displacement Control analysis. Four-noded 2D FE is formulated. Layer-wise FE described in this paper allows independent interpolation of displacements through the plate thickness and in-plane. 2D crack propagation criteria are based on the LEFM. The usefulness of the proposed FE is verified by comparison with analytical solution.

AB - The objective of this work is to study the transient response of laminated composite plates under different types of dynamic loading. For this purpose, laminated composite plate is modeled using Reddy’s generalized laminated plate theory (GLPT). This theory assumes layerwise linear variation of displacements components. Transverse displacement is constant through the thickness of the plate. Linear kinematic relations, as well as Hook’s law, are considered. The generalized displacements are expanded in double trigonometric series using Navier-type method. Governing partial differential equations are reduced to a set of ordinary differential equations in time. The equations of motion are solved using constant-average acceleration method. Effect of time step on accuracy of transient response is investigated using a family of simply supported cross-ply (0/90) laminates. Different number of layers, as well as their influence on transient response is considered. Different schemes of transient dynamic loading are investigated. Good agreement is obtained with some results existing from the literature.

AB - This paper describes the transient response of cross-ply laminated composite plates. Possibility of achieving the transient response of cross-ply composites by the use of Reddy’s generalized laminated plate theory (GLPT) is evaluated in this work. Layerwise linear variation of displacements components, as well as linear kinematic relations and Hook’s law are assumed. Navier solution is applied for expansion of generalized displacements in double trigonometric series. The governing partial differential equations are reduced to a set of ordinary differential equations in time. The equations of motion are solved using Newmark’s integration schemes. Transient response is calculated with an example of simply supported (0/90) laminate. Different number of layers and variants of stacking sequences are taken into consideration by parametric study. Transient response is investigated using different schemes of dynamic loading (forcing functions). For all loading types, results taking into account the influence of time step are presented. Results are compared with those of other theories existing from the literature. Variety of new results is presented.
