Thermal-stress behaviour of RCC gravity dams

AB  - Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) is a special concrete mixture with low cement content, frequently used for concrete gravity dams. This paper deals with the 3D finite element model for unsteady phased thermal-stress analysis of RCC dams. Model calibration and verification has been done, based on the in-situ measurements of the Platanovryssi dam. The study has been done using the actual dam shape, RCC time schedule, and material properties. The results prove that the recommended 3D model enables a reliable thermal-stress prediction and transversal joint distance computation for an RCC gravity dam.
AB  - Beton zbijen valjanjem ('valjani beton' ili 'RCC' - Roller Compacted Concrete) je vrsta betona sa niskim sadržajem cementa koja se često koristi kod betonskih gravitacionih brana. U radu je razmatran prostorni model za neustaljenu faznu termičko- naponsku analizu brana od valjanog betona. Kalibracija i verifikacija modela uređeni su na osnovu terenskih merenja na brani Platanovrisi. Istraživanje je urađeno uzimajući u obzir stvarnu geometriju brane, dinamiku ugradnje RCC-a i stvarne osobine materijala. Rezultati proračuna pokazuju da razvijeni 3D model omogućava pouzdano predviđanje termičkih napona i određivanje rastojanja između razdelnica kod gravitacionih RCC brana.

Numerical modeling of supercritical flow in closed conduit bend

AB  - Numerical modeling of supercritical flow in closed conduit bend is a continuation of the scale model experiments. The main goal of application of numerical model is to extend the range of investigation and to simulate conditions that could not be examined on scale model due to the limited capacity of the laboratory installation. Using the results of the numerical modeling, general conclusions and suggested empirical relationships (based on the scale model experiments) for the onset of a certain type of flow in the conduit, are checked. Numerical model is prepared using software package Fluent (Ansys-Fluid Dynamic).
AB  - Numeričko modeliranje burnog tečenja u krivini provodnika kružnog poprečnog preseka predstavlja nastavak ispitivanja koja su urađena na fizičkom modelu. Osnovni cilj primene numeričkog modela je da se proširi opseg ispitivanja, odnosno da se ispitaju drugačije karakteristike krivine, kao i uslovi tečenja u provodniku, koji zbog ograničenosti kapaciteta laboratorije, nisu mogli da se ispitaju na fizičkom modelu. Numerički model je formiranom u okviru programskog paketa Fluent (Ansys-Fluid Dynamic) i njegovom primenom su provereni opšti zaključci do kojih se došlo tokom modelskih ispitivanja, kao i primenljivost predloženih empirijskih izraza iz literature za nastanak određenog tipa tečenja u provodniku.

AB  - A complex flow pattern occurring in a circular conduit bend with supercritical flow has been studied. The main objective was to obtain reliable criteria for prediction of the onset of helical and choking flow, in order to facilitate the design of bottom outlets, tunnel spillways and drainage collectors with bends. A series of scale model experiments provided data for developing empirical relationships describing the effects of the bend curvature, bend deflection angle and approach flow conditions (relative flow depth and Froude number) on the inception of helical and choking flow. Expressions for the energy bend loss coefficient were also proposed. The bend curvature and approach flow conditions proved to have a major influence on the onset of helical flow, while the deflection angle becomes an important parameter for angles less than 45 degrees. Bend curvature and deflection angle have commensurable influence on the onset of choking flow.

Stepped spillway flow: Comparison of numerical and scale models

AB  - This paper deals with flow modelling of the stepped spillway for the Bogovina dam. The analysis was conducted using three approaches: scalemodelling, empirical equations and numerical modelling. An acceptable agreement was achieved between the empirical equations and the numerical model results, while both of them exhibit considerable differences when compared to scale-model. These discrepancies can be contributed to the difficulties in modelling the process of air-entrainment. Since air-entrainment is important for providing good estimates, existing empirical equations as well as numerical models require further improvements.
AB  - Tema rada je modeliranje strujnog polja na stepenastom brzotoku brane Bogovina. Analiza je sprovedena na rezultatima dobijenih pomoću: fizičkog modela, empirijskih jednačina i numeričkog modela. Slaganja rezultata empirijskih jednačina i numeričkog modela su u prihvatljivim granicama, dok je primećeno njihovo značajno odstupanje od rezultata merenja na fizičkom modelu. Uzrok ovih razlika je proces samo-aeracije mlaza. Budući da je ovaj proces važan za ovaj vid strujanja, nepohodno je poboljšati postojeće empirijske zavisnosti i numeričke modele.

AB  - In this paper a complex flow pattern occurring in a closed conduit bend with supercritical flow is analyzed. The research was done by a scale (physical hydraulic) model, and a numerical model developed in Ansys (Fluent) program surrounding. This article compares the results obtained by numerical and physical (scale) models, providing comments and recommendations for their application. Based on these results, simple empirical relationships were developed, describing the effects of the bend deflection angle and approach flow conditions (non dimensional depth and the Froude number upstream from the bend) on the considered flow.
AB  - U radu je analizirano složeno strujanje koje nastaje u krivini zatvorenog provodnika u burnom toku. Ispitivanja su urađena na hidrauličkom fizičkom modelu, ali i na numeričkom, formiranom u okviru programskog paketa Ansys (Fluent). Rezultati sa hidrauličkog modela su korišćeni za kalibraciju numeričkog, pa je u okviru rada prikazano poređenje rezultata dobijenih na pomenuta dva modela, sa komentarima i preporukama za njihovu primenu. Na osnovu izvršenih ispitivanja date su jednostavne zavisnosti kojima se opisuje uticaj veličine skretnog ugla i prilaznih uslova tečenja (dubina i Frudov broj uzvodno od krivine) na razmatrano tečenje.

AB  - A new approach in 3D numerical modeling for unsteady phased thermal-stress analysis of a massive concrete hydraulic structure is presented. The temperature field is computed first, providing a drive for the unsteady, nonlinear, viscoelastic, stress-strain analysis. This model is devised with actual initial and boundary conditions, appropriate material properties, and the observed concrete placement schedule. The verification is based on the field investigations of the Platanovryssi dam. The results of a long-term analysis have shown close agreement with the observed dam conditions. The proposed model presents a reliable tool for thermal-stress computation and transverse contraction joint distance evaluation.

AB  - In this paper the energy loss in a circular conduit bend with supercritical flow is analyzed. Based on the test results obtained by a scale model, the energy-loss coefficient has been determined. Simple empirical relationships were developed, describing the effects of the bend curvature and bend deflection angle on the energy losses. Since no expressions for supercritical flow bend energy-loss coefficient exist, proposed empirical relationships have been compared with expressions relating to pressurized flow.
AB  - U radu su analizirani gubici energije u krivini koji nastaju pri burnom tečenju u provodniku kružnog poprečnog preseka. Urađena su hidraulička modelska ispitivanja, na osnovu kojih su određeni koeficijenti gubitka energije. Predloženi su izrazi za koeficijent gubitka u zavisnosti od karakteristika krivine (skretnog ugla i zakrivljenosti). S obzirom da u literaturi ne postoje izrazi kojima se opisuje ovakav gubitak energije u krivini, predložene zavisnosti su upoređene sa izrazi a ko i se odnose na tečenje pod pritiskom. Na kraju rada su date preporuke i zaključci.
