AB - The exchange discharge model (EDM) is the model that was developed for the estimation of a stage-discharge curve and flood routing in compound channels. It was thoroughly tested against experimental data in different compound channel layouts. However, there is a little evidence on its application in rivers. This paper studies EDM performance in estimating stage-discharge curve at two gauging stations on the same river with different hydraulic conditions and compares its results with the traditional, divided channel method (DCM). The contribution of momentum fluxes due to turbulence diffusion and mass exchange to the total energy loss are analysed. It is found that EDM parameter values (ψt and ψg) depend on the hydraulic conditions at a gauging station. In the case of M1-type water surface profile, the ψt-value increases and the
effect of mass transfer is negligible. In the case of M2-type profile, the ψt-value decreases and the momentum flux due to mass transfer becomes dominant. Nonetheless, the lower ψt-value does not result in smaller additional loss due to turbulence diffusion, since the velocity difference between the main channel and the floodplain increases. Although the EDM and DCM provide approximately the same total discharge, EDM gives more realistic discharge distribution (main channel discharge is reduced and that on the floodplain is increased by 30-40% due to mass transfer caused by non-prismaticity of the channel).

AB - The hydraulic engineering community has been making continuous efforts to improve the
procedure for estimation of a stage discharge curve in a compound channel over the last twenty five years. The reason for this is the fact that tests in laboratory conditions have shown that the classical approach based on the divided channel method, which uses Manning’s equation, overestimates the discharge by more than 60% for high floodplain submergence ratios (> 0.3). Mathematical models that were developed and/or improved during this period were primarily tested using uniform or non-uniform flow data from laboratory flumes. This paper aims at applying one of these models in estimating the stage discharge curve under the flood conditions at one gauging station. More precisely, this will be the exchange discharge model, which is a 1D flow model. Apart from the momentum exchange due to turbulent diffusion, this model also considers the momentum exchange due to mass transfer between the main channel and floodplains, as rivers and streams have non-prismatic channels. The Slovac gauging station on the Kolubara River will be used for the case study, since there are floods observation data for this station available. The discharge values obtained for the highest recorded water levels
using the classical approach (divided channel method) and the exchange discharge method will be compared with the official records of the Republic hydrometeorological service of Serbia.
