AB - In order to overcome the lack of long-term meteorological dataset, European
Commision launched the CARPATCLIM project – climate atlas of the Carpathian region
with the daily basis meteorological data. This paper presents comparison of the results of
stochastic analysis of meteorological droughts occurrence in a growing season based on
the data from meteorological station of Kikinda and the data from CARPATCLIM
database which covers the region of Kikinda meteorological station. In this paper,
meteorological drought is defined as a product of drought length (period lasting at least
25 days with precipitation below 5 mm/day) and mean air temperature during the dry
period. Stochastic model of the meteo-drought occurrence is based on the theory of
extremes with a random number of random variables, allowing to make use of all
significant observed meteo-droughts.

AB - In the recent years, nearly every part of Central Europe and the Balkans has
experienced periods of reduced precipitation that can lead to droughts. Because of the
complexity of the phenomenon and the different points of view from which the problem
can be studied, it is difficult to decide when the drought started or when it ended. This paper
presents a methodology for a stochastic analysis of meteorological droughts. This method
is applied to precipitation and temperature data observed at a meteorological station of
Budapest for the period of 1900–2000. The drought is defined as a consequence of a
combined effect of temperature and prolonged dry period – consecutive days with daily
precipitation below a chosen threshold for precipitation. The statistical analysis of the
maximum meteorological droughts is performed by means of the peaks-over-threshold
(POT) method. The proposed methodology provides probability distributions of the
magnitude of droughts in terms of dry period duration and air temperatures, which can then
be used to formulate synthetic design droughts for selected return periods.

AB - This paper presents the results of stochastic analysis of meteorological droughts occurrence in a growing season based on the data from two meteorological stations in Vojvodina (Sremska Mitrovica and Kikinda). Meteorological drought is defined as a product of drought length (period lasting at least 25 days with precipitation below 5 mm/day) and mean air temperature during the dry period. Stochastic model of the meteo-drought occurrence is based on the theory of extremes with a random number of random variables, allowing to make use of all significant observed meteo-droughts. The model is comprised of the Poissonian process that describes the droughts occurrence and selected theoretical distributions for the droughts magnitude. Design meteo-droughts having return period 10, 20, 50 and 100 years are determined on the basis of adopted theoretical distribution of meteo-drought, duration and mean air temperature.

AB - Rainfall simulators have been used in research for more than 40 years. Unfortunately, there is not much literature on their construction and calibration. This paper presents a rainfall simulator experimental rig, developed at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Subotica, and its calibration, i.e. determination of rainfall distribution over the surface. The simulator uses six VeeJet 80100 oscillating nozzles equally spaced with 100 cm distance along a horizontal pipe. A box for rainfall intensity reduction is placed under each nozzle. The maximum rainfall intensity that can be achieved is 3,1 mm/min and maximum surface covered by the simulator is 1x6 m(2). As a measure of uniformity of rainfall distribution over the surface, the Christiansen's uniformity coefficient was used. For surface widths ranging from 0,1 to 1 m, the Christiansen's coefficient varies from 0,8 to 0,9 for the oscillating nozzles, while for the non-oscillating nozzle it has a value of 0,46.

AB - In the past sixty years several methods for the assessment of rainfall distribution over the surface has developed, but the method proposed by Christiansen is mostly used. Depending on the type of simulator, type of the nozzle and the size of a surface, Christiansen’s coefficient varie from 0.6 to 0.95. This paper presents a method for determining Christiansen's coefficient of uniformity and assessment of its ambiguity due to measurement uncertainty of associated equipment. Rainfall intensities of up to 3.1 mm/min with a uniformity coefficient up to 0.85 can be achieved with this simulator.
