Experimental Investigation and Numerical Analysis of the Axial Load Capacity of Circular Concrete-Filled Tubular Columns

AB  - This paper focuses on the experimental investigation of the axial load capacity of CFT
(concrete-filled steel tube) columns under actual construction conditions during building reconstruction. A total of four samples were loaded up to failure. The varied parameters were the column length and absence/presence of the concrete infill within the steel tube. Further, the analysis is extended to developing a numerical model in the finite element-based software ABAQUS version 6.9. This numerical model includes material and geometrical nonlinearities and was validated with the experimental results. The contribution of the concrete core to the column capacity and the concrete core confinement effect are discussed. Finally, the column capacity was calculated according to several design codes: the Eurocode 4 with and without considering the confinement effect, American specifications, Australian standards, the American Institute of Steel Construction, and the Architectural Institute of Japan. The Eurocode 4 considering the confinement effect provides the closest results to those obtained in the tests.

Numerički postupak za određivanje stanja deformacija i napona u AB presecima

AB  - U radu je dat predlog jednog numeričkog postupka za određivanje stanja deformacija i napona u armiranobetonskim presecima. Postupak se zasniva na MKE sa korišćenjem “fiber“ elemenata. Za predložene veze napona i deformacija u betonu i armaturi prema EC2, razrađen je numerički postupak pomoću koga se u presecima složenog oblika, koji su armirani proizvoljnom armaturom, veoma brzo sa velikom tačnošću određuje stanje dilatacija i napona u betonu i armaturi, za zadato opterećenje. Izlazni rezultati se prikazuju u tabelarnom i grafičkom obliku i kao takvi su veoma pogodni za koriščenje u inženjerskoj praksi.

AB  - Within the design of the underground garage in Vlajkovićeva Street, various variant solutions for the foundation pit protection and neighboring buildings were considered. It is necessary to meet the condition that the stability of the sides of the excavation is ensured during the works and later in the operation of the facility, as well as to enable quality execution of works. Based on the performed analyzes, it can be concluded that the production of "single" diaphragm lamellas with the installation of prefabricated elements and the construction of a protective wall between them in two phases in specific conditions is the most favorable solution.

Structural Behaviour of Axially Loaded Concrete-Filled Steel Tube Columns during the Top-Down Construction Method

AB  - The paper discusses the structural behaviour of concrete-filled steel tube columns (CFT)
when applied to the top-down construction method as temporary internal supports for ceilings. Their
ultimate capacity to take into account the actual boundary conditions of the column is essential for
successful application in construction. The paper presents the full-scale in situ testing of four slender
specimens with variable D/t ratios under concentric axial loading. The CFT columns were supported
on the previously jacked concrete piles. In addition, detailed finite element numerical models in
ABAQUS and PLAXIS computer programs were developed. The models include the nonlinear
behaviour of materials and the nonlinear behaviour of soil. The soil–pile–column interaction and
impact of the CFT column–pile connection stiffness on global column stability were considered.
The numerical model was validated by comparison with the experimental results. In conclusion,
the coefficient for the effective buckling length of the studied columns is proposed. Finally, the
experimental results of the critical buckling forces were compared with widely used international
design codes Eurocode 4-EC4, American standard-ACI and the Australian standard-AS.

Landslide stabilization in cut zone number 6 from km 28 + 478,00 to km 28 + 643,00

AB  - In the cut zone number 6 on E-80 Niš-Dimitrovgrad highway from km 28 +
478,00 to km 28 + 643,00 slope stability was affected causing mass movement. Additional
inclinometers measured the mass wasting thickness between 14 m and 25 m. The height
of the cut determined the slope protective backfilled gallery to be the best solution. The
paper presents the detailed geostatic calculation of landslide stabilization using computer
programs Plaxis 2D and RocScience Slide. Further, it shows the static calculation of the
protective gallery in the computer program Radimpex Tower 3D. Results confirmed that
the proposed structure was rigid enough to provide the necessary protection for the road
structure.

Simple algorithm for computing the stiffness matrix of composite cross-section

AB  - The paper proposes an algorithm for computing the stiffness matrix of composite cross-sections made of two or more different materials. Irrespective of the cross-section geometry, the calculation puts forward a numerical solution applying the finite element method (FEM). The cross-section is discretised into fibers and integration over the section area is performed numerically. The required geometric characteristics and stiffness matrix of the entire cross-section are formed by the assembling procedure. Beam theory equations are used for calculating stresses and strains at characteristic points of the cross-section. Materially nonlinear behaviour of concrete and steel is considered. The advantage of the proposed numerical algorithm is that results of satisfying accuracy are obtained in only a few iterations. The algorithm is implemented in own computer program with a straightforward input data procedure.

AB  - During the previous period, large and uneven settlements of the ''UNIVEREXPORT'' distribution center occurred on one part of the main structure and foundation slab. These settlements are such that they affect the normal functioning of the object. The structure of the object on the columns, is founded on "Franki" piles, and the floor construction directly on the ground over a layer of tiles. This floor structure is loaded with extremely high vertical live loads. Based on the analysis of variant solutions, the most favorable solution was adopted as strengthening of the floor structure by jacking a certain number of composite piles into the ground until the required load-bearing capacity is achieved.

Static calculation of stabilization of the landslide in cut 4 from km 878+650 to km 879+050

AB  - The paper presents retaining structure to stabilize the landslide in the middle
section from 878+775 to km 878+825, and slope protection on both left and right sides
in order to provide vertical cutting and excavation to the level of highway platform.
Retaining structure was designed as micro-pile wall with three different types of walls
depending on the pile position. Micro-pile is made from steel pipe dia. Ø139.6 mm and
8.8mm thick wall, which is filled with cement mortar of minimum strength 30 MPa. In a
constructive view, the designed retaining structure is a plate that is resting on the
continual tie beams, which are supported in discrete points by geotechnical anchors.
Calculation of stability and bearing capacity of protective structure was carried out in
several phases. Phases are modeled according to the technology of execution of works.
The calculation was performed in FEM program called Plaxis 2D. This calculation is
based on the finite element method, using an incremental, iterative process. Based on the
performed analysis, calculation of stability and bearing capacity, it can beconcluded
that designed support structure satisfies all the necessary conditions of stability and
bearing capacity.

abstract = "The paper presents retaining structure to stabilize the landslide in the middle
section from 878+775 to km 878+825, and slope protection on both left and right sides
in order to provide vertical cutting and excavation to the level of highway platform.
Retaining structure was designed as micro-pile wall with three different types of walls
depending on the pile position. Micro-pile is made from steel pipe dia. Ø139.6 mm and
8.8mm thick wall, which is filled with cement mortar of minimum strength 30 MPa. In a
constructive view, the designed retaining structure is a plate that is resting on the
continual tie beams, which are supported in discrete points by geotechnical anchors.
Calculation of stability and bearing capacity of protective structure was carried out in
several phases. Phases are modeled according to the technology of execution of works.
The calculation was performed in FEM program called Plaxis 2D. This calculation is
based on the finite element method, using an incremental, iterative process. Based on the
performed analysis, calculation of stability and bearing capacity, it can beconcluded
that designed support structure satisfies all the necessary conditions of stability and
bearing capacity.",

Experimental testing of axial load capacity and stability of circular CFT columns

AB  - The paper presents the experimental testing of the axial capacity and stability of short,
moderately slender and slender circular CFT columns. For the purpose of sample testing a special
set of hydraulic presses was constructed. In order to achieve centric loading of the load, a device
calotte was used. With the help of the dosing and gauges placed at the top of the column, force
and vertical displacement were measured continuously. The test was carried out on two short
columns 0.5 m and 1.0 m long, and four moderately slender and slender columns with a length of
4.0 m with different boundary support conditions. In the short CFT columns the confinement
effect was taken into account as well and loss of bearing capacity occurred due to the steel profile
yield strength. In moderately slender and slender columns, the loss of stability occurs before the
loss of the load capacity of the column. The obtained results of the experimental tests were then
compared with the valid regulations: EC4, ACI, AS and AISC. It can be concluded that EC4
gives the most approximate results to the experiment.

AB  - This paper presents the designed and executed solution for strenghtening existing foundations on business object "Autocentar Stojanovic" in Belgrade for the purpose of constructing 8 additional above ground levels. The existing foundations can accept three additional levels. Therefore, it is necessary to perform strenghtening of the foundations. According to the design strenghtening will be performed with ''MEGA'' piles bellow existing foundation slab. By use of the proposed technology for work execution, all existing works were finished successfully and in given deadline. Additionally, all calculated settlements are in close range with the measured values.

AB  - In this paper, results of experimental investigation of bearing capacity and stability of slender and moderately slender CFT circular tubes are presented. The effects of ratio thickness/ radius of steel cross section and support conditions are investigated. Numerical simulation for the tested examples was performed in computer program ABAQUS. In this simulations, nonlinear constitutive models were used for modelling of concrete, steel and concrete/steel connection. With modified Rick's method critical buckling force for the CFT column was calculated. Verification of the obtained experimental results was performed with comparison with several world standards: EC4, ACI, AS, AISC, as well as with the results obtained in ABAQUS.
AB  - U radu su prikazani program i rezultati eksperimentalnog ispitivanja nosivosti i stabilnosti umereno vitkih i vitkih kružnih CFT stubova. Analiziran je uticaj odnosa prečnika i debljine zida čeličnog profila, kao i uticaj graničnih uslova oslanjanja na vrednost kritične sile izvijanja. Izvršena je i numerička simulacija ispitanih uzoraka primenom metode konačnih elemenata i računarskog programa ABAQUS. U modelu su zadati nelinearni konstitutivni modeli za beton jezgra i konstrukcioni čelik šupljeg profila, kao i veza ova dva elementa. Primenom modifikovane Riks-ove metode sračunata je kritična sila izvijanja CFT stuba. Verifikacija rezultata izvršena je upoređivanjem sopstvenih eksperimentalnih rezultata s važećim pravilnicima: EC4, ACI, AS, AISC, kao i s rezultatima dobijenim primenom računarskog programa ABAQUS.

the problem of stability. In this case, we must take into account the effects of the second
order. A nonlinear model was created in computer program Abaqus. In the model a
nonlinear constitutive models for concrete core and steel hollow section, as well as the
connection of these two elements was used. The critical buckling force of CFT column was
obtained by modified Riks method. The influence of boundary conditions and the diameter
and wall thickness of steel profiles on the critical buckling force was analyzed.

AB  - CFT columns are one of the basic structural elements in "top-down" construction method. Because of the large depth of excavation the question of stability of these columns raises. AB  - This paper analyzes the axial load capacity of CFT columns according to the following standards and codes: EC 4, ACI, AS, AISC, AIJ, DL/T. The influence of the confinement concrete core by steel tube, ratio d/t i e/d, shrinkage and creep of concrete, local buckling, bond of steel tube and concrete core on the bearing capacity of composite section is considered. Diagrams of stress-strain for concrete and steel are shown, which are most commonly used in the literature for modeling CFT columns using finite element method. The influence of slenderness of the column, as one of the key factors to define the fracture of the girder. The numerical example was performed comparing the axial load capacity of circular CFT column to the aforementioned regulations and the values obtained are compared with experimental results available in the literature. Also, in case 2 the capacity calculation of slender column according to EC4 is shown, which is based on the effects of second-order and determining the interaction curve. In the attachment are given the coordinates of the characteristic points for constructing interaction curves for CFT columns of circular and rectangular cross-section.
AB  - U radu je analizirana aksijalna nosivost CFT stubova prema sledećim standardima i kodovima: EC 4, ACI, AS, AISC, AIJ, DL/T. Razmatran je uticaj utezanja betona čeličnom cevi, odnosa d/t i e/d, skupljanja i tečenja betona, lokalnog izvijanja,veze čelične cevi i betonskog jezgra na nosivost spregnutog preseka. Prikazani su dijagrami veze napon-dilatacija za beton i čelik koji se u literaturi najčešće primenjuju za modeliranje CFT stubova primenom metode konačnih elemenata. Razmatran je uticaj vitkosti stuba, kao jedan od ključnih faktora za definisanje načina loma nosača. Na konkretnom brojnom primeru izvršeno je upoređivanje aksijalne nosivosti kružnog CFT stuba prema pomenutim pravilnicima i dobijene vrednosti upoređene su sa rezultatima eksperimenata dostupnih u literaturi. Takođe, u primeru 2 prikazan je proračun nosivosti vitkog stuba prema EC4 koji se zasniva na uticajima drugog reda i određivanju krive interakcije.U prilogu su date koordinate karakterističnih tačaka za crtanje krivih interakcije CFT stubova kružnog i pravougaonog poprečnog preseka.

AB  - Bending resistance of a composite steel and concrete section apart from shape and dimensions of a cross section and mechanical characteristics of materials, depends also on type of shear connection, i.e. connectors and shear steel-concrete interface. In the paper, ductile and nonductile headed studs are considered. Bending resistance of composite sections with partial shear connection, which is a connection where a number of shear studs is smaller than necessary for fully plastic bending resistance of a section to be achieved, is analysed. The reduced bending resistance is found. The calculaton in accordance with Eurocode 4 is presented.
AB  - Nosivost na savijanje spregnutog preseka od čelika i betona pored oblika i dimenzija poprečnog preseka i mehaničkih karakteristika materijala, zavisi i od načina sprezanja, tj. tipova sredstava za sprezanja i oblikovanja kontaktnog (smičućeg) spoja između betona i čelika. U radu se koriste duktilni i neduktilni moždanici sa glavom. Određuje se nosivost na savijanje spregnutih preseka sa parcijalnim smičućim spojem u kome, za razliku od punog smičućeg spoja, broj moždanika nije dovoljan da se ostvari moment pune nosivosti, tako da se određuje redukovani moment nosivosti. Proračun se sprovodi prema Evrokodu 4.

AB  - In the paper, a simplified method for design of circular composite CFT columns according to the European standard for deisgn of composite steel and concrete structures – Eurocode 4 is presented. Veri¬fication of the column section capacity under axial compression and bending is based on the concept of limit states and determination of the N-M interaction curve. For eight the most common in practice CFT columns, continuous N-M interaction curves are constructed. In addition, for these selected sections, the influence of the variation of the concrete and steel classes on the column cross-section capacity is analyzed. Given interaction curves simplify the design of composite columns and the choice of dimensions of CFT column and its steel and concrete classes.

Analysis of bearing capacity of temporary columns in top down construction methods

AB  - One of the methods of construction which are  increasingly used in urban conditions is a "Top Down" method. This method of construction is suitable when constructing buildings with a larger number of underground floors. Construction of the building is done from top to bottom where the ceilings of a structure are used for shoring of the structure for pit protection. One of the important elements in this method are internal ceiling supports. In the design engineers tend to minimise the costs and dimensions of these supports. This leads to the problem of their stability and capacity. This paper presents the analysis of bearing capacity of steel pipe filled with concrete which is on the bottom end elastically wedged in a pile and on the upper end in a constructed cealing of the building.
AB  - Jedna od metoda gradnje koja se sve više primenjuje u gradskim uslovima jeste "Top Down" metoda. Ovakav način gradnje je pogodan kada se izvode objekti sa većim brojem podzemnih etaža. Konstrukcija objekta izvodi se odozgo na dole pri čemu se tavanicama objekta vrši razupiranje zaštitne konstrukcije temeljne jame. Jedan od bitnih elemenata kod ove metode jesu unutrašnji oslonci tavanica. Pri projektovanju teži se da koštanje, odnosno dimenzije ovih oslonaca budu minimalne. To dovodi do problema njihove stabilnosti i nosivosti. U radu se prikazuje analiza nosivosti stuba od čeličnih cevi ispunjenih betonom koji su sa donje strane elastično uklješteni u šip, a sa gornje strane u izvedenu konstrukciju objekta.

AB  - This paper presents a simplified method for calculation of bearing capacity of composite columns according to the European standard for the calculation of composite steel and concrete structures - Eurocode 4. Resistance analysis, and also the stability analysis of the isolated column under axial compression is based on the application of the European buckling curves. Verification of the column capacity subjected to axial compression and bending is based on the N-M interaction curve. For the presented numerical example, construction of the interaction curve is explained for the composite column with the circular concrete filled steel tube cross section. The influence of the concrete core confinement on the increase of concrete strength and the column bearing capacity of a CFT column is discussed. The [N, M] coordinates of the continuous interaction curve are calculated from the derived expressions for determination of the area and the static moment of the cut-off portion of the circular CFT section. For the presented example, the effects of the strength of concrete, strength of steel and the diameter and wall thickness of the steel tube on the composite CFT cross section capacity is discussed.
AB  - U radu je prikazana uprošćena metoda proračuna nosivosti spregnutih stubova prema važećem evropskom standardu za proračun spregnutih konstrukcija od čelika i betona - Evrokodu 4. Analiza nosivosti, a time i stabilnosti pri aksijalnom pritisku izolovanog stuba bazira se na primeni evropskih krivih izvijanja. Provera nosivosti pri kombinaciji aksijalnog pritiska i momenta savijanja zasniva se na N-M interakcionoj krivoj. Na konkretnom brojnom primeru prikazano je konstruisanje krive interakcije za spregnuti stub poprečnog preseka u obliku kružnog šupljeg profila ispunjenog betonom. Razmatran je uticaj utezanja betona na povećanje čvrstoće betona i nosivosti preseka CFT stuba. Izvođenjem izraza za određivanje odsečenih površina i statičkih momenata odsečenih površina kod kružnog CFT stuba, a zatim i određivanjem koordinata tačaka koje pripadaju krivoj interakcije, konstruisana je kontinualana kriva interakcije. Za navedeni poprečni presek kod proračuna nosivosti pri kombinaciji aksijalnog pritiska i savijanja, analizirani su sledeći uticaji na graničnu nosivost spregnutog preseka: uticaj promene marke betona, uticaj promene klase čelika i uticaj promene odnosa prečnika i debljine čeličnog profila.
