AB  - This paper aims to develop design recommendations for closely spaced built-up stainless steel columns, based on findings gained in performed research at the University of Belgrade. The research focuses on pin-ended built-up columns formed from two press-braked channel chords oriented back-to-back and addresses their flexural buckling capacity about the minor axis. The impact of overall and local chord slenderness, interconnection stiffness, geometric imperfections and material nonlinearity is evaluated. In order to fully exploit their structural performance, two
separate approaches for the design of built-up columns with welded or bolted interconnections are defined that include different formulas for shear stiffness.

AB  - Pravila  za  proračun  centrično  pritisnutih  elemenata  ravnokrakog  L  poprečnog  preseka  od 
nerđajućeg čelika nisu eksplicitno definisana u važećem evropskom standardu SRPS EN 1993-
1-4.  Ovaj  rad  ukratko  prikazuje  rezultate  opsežnog  istraživanja  sprovedenog  na  ovom  tipu 
konstruktivnih  elemenata  sa  ciljem  definisanja  preporuka  za  njihov  proračun.  Na  osnovu 
sistematičnog  eksperimentalnog  istraživanja,  sprovedena  je  detaljna  numerička  analiza  i 
definisana  baza  podataka  graničnih  nosivosti  stubova.  Materijalna  i  geometrijska  nelinerana 
analiza obuhvatila je tri ključne legure nerđajućeg čelika, austenitnu, feritnu i dupleks leguru. 
Preporučene su krive izvijanja za kontrolu stabilnosti na fleksiono i fleksiono-torziono izvijanje 
u skladu sa evropskim proračunskim procedurama.

recommendations for their design. Based on a systematic experimental investigation, a detailed 
numerical analysis was performed, and a database of columns’ resistances were defined. Material 
and geometric nonlinear analysis included three key stainless steel alloys, austenitic, ferritic and 
duplex. The design curves for flexural and flexural–torsional buckling check have been proposed 
in accordance with European codified procedures.

Experimental study of laser-welded stainless steel angle columns

AB  - Substantial research has been conducted in the last years into the structural responses of cold-formed and hot-rolled stainless steel equal-leg angle columns, whereas there is no experimental data on laser-welded stainless steel angle columns despite these sections being increasingly used in the modern construction industry. To fill this gap and provide benchmarks for design, a comprehensive experimental investigation into the structural strength and stability of laser-welded austenitic stainless steel equal-leg angle columns under pure axial compression was performed and described in this paper. A series of laboratory tests, performing on two test groups of specimens with nominal dimensions of 60 × 60 × 6 mm and 100 × 100 × 10 mm and different lengths, involved 6 stub column tests and 20 global buckling tests together with measurements on material properties, initial local geometric imperfections and residual stresses. The experimental observations reveal that the column ultimate capacity and prevalent failure mode — major-axis flexural-torsional buckling and minor-axis flexural buckling — are highly dependent on the column slenderness and initial imperfections. The full load-lateral displacement, load-torsional rotation and load-axial strain responses of the specimens were fully reported and discussed. The results were employed to evaluate the accuracy of the current European and North American stainless steel design standards. The evaluation results revealed that the codified design procedures yield conservative resistance predictions of laser-welded stainless steel equal-leg angle columns, showing a prospective for their modification and improvement by providing more optimized and realistic results in design considering the actual residual stress distributions, material nonlinearity and strain hardening.

AB  - Rad  prikazuje  merenje  početnih  geometrijskih  imperfekcija  i  zaostalih  napona  u  okviru

napraveljenih od austenitnog nerđajućeg čelika EN 1.4301. Postupak merenja zaostalih napona 
i rezultati u formi rasporeda zaostalih napona i ekstremnih vrednosti prikazni su u radu.
AB  - The paper presents initial geometric imperfections and residual stresses measurment as a part of 
a research on ultimate capacity of axially compressed angle columns made from stainless steel. 
The research covers three different angle types – cold-formed, hot-rolled and laser-welded. The 
procedure and results of initial geometric imperfections measurments using a laser measurement 
system are presented. Measurement of residual stresses using a sectioning method was performed 
on hot-rolled and laser-welded samples with nominal dimensions of 100 × 100 × 10, made of 
austenitic  stainless  steel  EN  1.4301.  The  procedure  of  residual  stresses  measurement  and 
obtained results in form of residual stresses distribution and extreme values are presented.

AB  - This paper explores an attempt to investigate the structural behaviour and design of equal-leg stainless steel angle columns fabricated by the laser-welding of individual hot-rolled plates and by hot-rolling process. The studies cover columns with pin-ended boundary conditions exposed to pure axial compression. An advanced and realistic finite element model able to replicate the buckling features of stainless steel angle columns is developed and validated against available experiments collected in the literature. Employing the validated finite element model, quantitative numerical parametric studies, considering minor-axis flexural buckling, as well as flexural-torsional buckling, are performed. Based on comprehensive benchmark data, the accuracy, safety and applicability of the existing column design procedures provided in the European and North American structural stainless steel codes are assessed. The evaluation results reveal that the North American codified design procedures lead to conservative and scattered resistance predictions, thereby demonstrating a need for their improvement. As a result of conducted studies, the new criteria for design of pin-ended hot-rolled and laser-welded stainless steel equal-leg angle columns are proposed. Their suitability for inclusion in the European structural stainless steel design code is confirmed by statistical reliability analyses in accordance with EN 1990.

abstract = "This paper explores an attempt to investigate the structural behaviour and design of equal-leg stainless steel angle columns fabricated by the laser-welding of individual hot-rolled plates and by hot-rolling process. The studies cover columns with pin-ended boundary conditions exposed to pure axial compression. An advanced and realistic finite element model able to replicate the buckling features of stainless steel angle columns is developed and validated against available experiments collected in the literature. Employing the validated finite element model, quantitative numerical parametric studies, considering minor-axis flexural buckling, as well as flexural-torsional buckling, are performed. Based on comprehensive benchmark data, the accuracy, safety and applicability of the existing column design procedures provided in the European and North American structural stainless steel codes are assessed. The evaluation results reveal that the North American codified design procedures lead to conservative and scattered resistance predictions, thereby demonstrating a need for their improvement. As a result of conducted studies, the new criteria for design of pin-ended hot-rolled and laser-welded stainless steel equal-leg angle columns are proposed. Their suitability for inclusion in the European structural stainless steel design code is confirmed by statistical reliability analyses in accordance with EN 1990.",

AB  - Currently, there is still no explicit design approach for cold-formed stainless steel columns with equal-leg angle sections in Europe. A comprehensive numerical investigation, validated by the available experiments collected in the literature, has therefore been undertaken to provide benchmark data for the assessment of design procedures for cold-formed stainless steel angle columns currently adopted in European and Australian codes. Minor-axis flexural buckling, as well as flexural-torsional buckling have been considered. In total, 27 different cross-section sizes covering both slender and non-slender sections, and a wide range of column slenderness values have been examined including austenitic, duplex and ferritic grades. On the basis of the experimental and numerical results, new design recommendations for cold-formed stainless steel equal-leg angle columns have been made per family of stainless steel. The suitability of the proposals was confirmed by means of a reliability analysis.

AB  - Nowadays, the codified procedure for design of centrically compressed cold-formed stainless steel (CFSS) builtup members is absent in Europe. Besides, there are no published research information and experimental data in this structural area. This paper focuses on a comprehensive experimental investigation of closely spaced CFSS built-up columns and addresses their flexural buckling capacity about the minor principal axis. Two series with a total of 36 built-up members were assembled, each formed by two discontinuously and directly connected channel chords oriented back-to-back to form an I-section. The chords were press-braked from flat strips of austenitic stainless steel EN 1,4301 as non-slender channel sections. The chords were uniformly interconnected by bolts or by welds. To identify the effects of interconnection spacing on chords' composite action, the overall and chord slenderness ratios were varied. Material properties, cross-section response and initial imperfections were quantified before testing. As a result, the overall flexural buckling without any local-overall interactions was observed as the dominant failure mode. All findings were used in the accompanying paper [1] to establish qualitative data base through numerical simulations of flexural buckling tests. Additionally, a quantitative accuracy assessment of the design methods for carbon steel built-up columns provided in Eurocode and American Specification was reported on the basis of their ability to predict flexural buckling resistances of the tested columns. This enabled numerical parametric studies and proposing design rules for CFSS built-up columns with non-slender sections that capture interconnection shear stiffness, overall and chord slenderness ratio and strain hardening effects.

AB  - In parallel with an experimental investigation of the flexural buckling behaviour of built-up stainless steel columns presented in the accompanying paper (Dobric et al., submitted for publication), a detailed Finite Element Analysis (FEA) has been performed to simulate the experiment and identify the key factors affecting the buckling response. The FEA entailed realistic geometry, measured geometric imperfections and material properties of the specimens. Very good agreement was obtained between the experiment and FEA, which proved the capability of the computational approach to replicate experimental results and predict ultimate buckling loads. In the absence of explicit design rules for flexural buckling resistance of stainless steel closely spaced built-up members, the experimental results were compared with design predictions according to the existing European Standard and American Specification for carbon steel structures. The findings indicate that the mentioned design standards may be very conservative regarding the buckling resistance of stainless steel built-up members; this under-prediction may be associated with the impact assessment of chord slenderness and interconnection stiffness on the buckling response. The main purpose of this research is to establish a qualitative data base reliable for the further quantitative numerical parameter analysis and for the development of new design rules for compressed stainless steel cold-formed built-up members.

AB  - Existing design codes for steel-concrete composite structures give only general information about the shear connection provided by headed studs in group arrangement. Grouting of the openings in prefabricated concrete slabs, where the grouped headed studs are placed in the deck pockets is alternative to cast-in-place decks to accomplish fast execution of composite structures. This paper considers the possibility to reduce the distance between the studs within the group, bellow the Eurocode limitations. This may lead to increased competitiveness of the prefabricated construction because more studs are placed in the group if negative effectives of smaller distances between studs are limited. The main purpose of this work is to investigate these limits and propose an analytical calculation model for prediction of the shear resistance of grouped stud arrangements in the deck pockets. An advanced FEA model, validated by results of push-out experiments, is used to analyze the shear behavior of the grouped stud with smaller distance between them than recommended by EN 1994-1. Calculation model for shear resistance, which is consistent with the existing Eurocode rules, is proposed based on a newly introduced equivalent diameter of the stud group, d(G). The new calculation model is validated by comparison to the results of FE parametric study. The distance between the studs in the longitudinal direction and the number of stud rows and columns in the group are considered as the main variables.

Behaviour of stainless steel press-braked channel sections under compression

AB  - This paper describes an experimental and numerical investigation of stainless steel material response and behaviour of press-braked channel sections under pure axial compression. A material test programme that covers austenitic stainless steel EN 1.4301 was carried out to study the nonlinear stress-strain relationship and changes of basic mechanical properties due to the press-braking processes. The key experimental results were used to estimate the appropriateness of existing analytical material models and to determinate strain-hardening exponents. The validation of recently proposed models for predicting the strength enhancements in cold-formed sections was also performed. Additionally, corresponding Finite Element (FE) models were built for flat and corner coupons to match the tensile test results and to establish the parameters of a ductile damage model in Abaqus. The susceptibility to local buckling of the channel section was determined by stub column tests. The FE model, calibrated and validated against the experiments, was used to perform a parametric study over a wide range of section slenderness. This allowed the quantitative assessments of design procedures stated in Eurocode 3 and American' Specifications, and the Continuous Strength Method (CSM). The comparisons between generated data and predicted strengths reveal the conservatism of the Eurocode 3 design method for both non-slender and slender channels. In contrast, the CSM reflects significantly better the nonlinear buckling behaviour of non-slender channels. Although this method gives more accurate results comparing to effective with method employed in Eurocode 3, the slight unsafe predictions were found for slender channels in the intermediate cross-section slenderness.

AB  - The frequently applied solution for shear connection in steel and concrete precast composite struc- tures is the discontinuous shear connection with a headed stud in group arrangement. Application of shear connection with headed studs in group arrangement and calculation of shear resistance for studs group in typical precast composite floor beam is presented. The possibility and feasibility of shear connection construction with headed studs in group arrangement was considered. It is shown that the shear connection in precast composite floor beams can be constructed with a group of four headed studs.
AB  - Diskontinualan podužni smičući spoj ostvaren grupisanim moždanicima sa glavom je često korišćeno konstruktivno rešenje smičućeg spoja kod montažnih spregnutih nosača. Prikazana je primena smičućeg spoja ostvarenog grupama moždanika sa glavom i proračun nosivosti na smicanje, na primeru tipičnih montažnih spregnutih podnih nosača međuspratnih konstrukcija. Mogućnost i opravdanost primene konstruktivnog rešenja smičućeg spoja grupama moždanika su razmatrani. Pokazano je da se smičući spoj montažnog spregnutog podnog nosača može izvesti grupom od četiri moždanika.

AB  - Usage of zinc-silicate coatings as anti-corrosive protection of friction connections results in reduction of construction time and provides protection from corrosion. Such protection system has a number of advantages in respect to the widely implemented metallization procedure, prevalently in terms of speed of implementation, required training of the workforce and cost. In this paper were pre- sented friction coefficients for different systems of anti-corrosive protection of friction connections, with emphasis on the zinc-silicate coatings and their technical characteristics and implementation methods.
AB  - Primenom cink-silikatnih premaza kao antikorozione zaštite tarnih površina skraćuje se vreme izgradnje konstrukcija i obezbeđuje zaštita od korozije. Ovakav sistem zaštite ima niz prednosti u odnosu na široko primenjivan postupak metalizacije, pre svega u smislu brzine sprovođenja, zahtevane kvalifikovanosti radne snage i cene. U ovom radu prikazani su koeficijenti trenja za različite sisteme antikorozione zaštite tarnih spojeva, sa akcentom na cink-silikatne premaze i njihove tehničke karakteristike i način primene.

AB  - When used as construction materials, the aluminium and its alloys are dominant in the field of facade structures. In these applications, a need has been felt in practice to strengthen facade structures made of aluminium alloys, and the steel is also used for such strengthening. A review of current possibilities is presented in the paper from theoretical and practical standpoints. An original solution involving gluing of steel elements is presented as an optimum technical solution. The solution has been proven by testing a sample in laboratory conditions, and it constitutes a basis for detailed research, which is currently under way.

AB  - When applying high strength bolts in friction connections, a load-bearing capacity depends on pretension force in the bolts as well as on friction coefficient found on friction surfaces. It is important to get the reliable value of the pretension force, so friction connections often undergo experimental research. In order to use strain gauges, which are inserted into the bolt shank, bolts need to be calibrated before we even use them in experimental research. Research that has been conducted shows a great difference between nominal and experimental strain in bolts, therefore FEA calibration of the bolts had to be carried out. Good results matching were obtained, hence a use of strain gauges was justified even for bolts without a shank.
AB  - U slučaju smičućih spojeva s visokovrednim zavrtnjevima s punom silom prednaprezanja, nosivost spoja zavisi kako od intenziteta sile prednaprezanja u visokovrednom zavrtnju, tako i od koeficijenta trenja na tarnim površinama. Veoma je važno odrediti pouzdanu vrednost sile prednaprezanja u visokovrednim zavrtnjevima, pa su tarni spojevi često predmet eksperimentalnih istraživanja. Kako bi se za određivanje intenziteta sile prednaprezanja mogle koristiti merne trake ugrađene u telo zavrtnja, zavrtnjeve je neophodno kalibrisati pre početka njihove primene u eksperimentalnom istraživanju. Sprovedeno istraživanje pokazalo je veliku razliku između nominalnih i eksperimentalno određenih dilatacija zavrtnjeva, zbog čega je sprovedena kalibracija zavrtnjeva numeričkom analizom (primenom metode konačnih elemenata). Dobijeno je dobro poklapanje rezultata, a primena mernih traka kod zavrtnjeva koji imaju navoj celom dužinom tela takođe se pokazala kao opravdana.

AB  - Firma “Alcoa Fastening Systems” konstruisala je “Huck BobTail” sistem mehaničkih spojnih sredstava i predstavila ga kao jednu od najnaprednijih tehnologija spajanja do danas. U pitanju su zavrtnjevi sa zaključavanjem (antivandal) naredne generacije koji donose i do pet puta veću čvrstoću na zamor od standardnih zavrtnjeva sa navrtkom, a konstruisani su tako da pruže visoku čvrstoću, pouzdanost i otpornost na vibracije i u najekstremnijim uslovima. “Huck BobTail” spojna sredstva odlikuju visoke performance kao i jednostavna i brza ugradnja. U ovom radu prikazan je istorijski razvoj spojnih sredstava sa zaključavanjem. Detaljno je opisano spojno sredstvo sistema “Huck BobTail”, oprema i način njihove ugradnje u spojeve kao i način unošenja sile prednaprezanja. Prikazan je izvod iz postojećih predstandarda za proračun nosivosti spojnih sredstava sa zaključavanjem, sa posebnim akcentom na minimalna rastojanja između zavrtnjeva u spoju, nosivost spojnog sredstva na smicanje, pritisak po omotaču rupe i zatezanje.

According to authors opinion conclusions lead to clear statement that such structures are possible as well that such solutions could have economical and serviceability sense, especially in field of structural engineering where exposing to temperature changes is limited to relatively small range. In case of aluminium and steel combination, for extreme temperature change used in structural engineering, advantages that are achieved are considerably higher than disadvantages, especially in cases where deformation is dominant condition.

AB  - Najnoviji trendovi u građevinarstvu u pogledu projektovanja vitkih konstrukcija sa velikim rasponima, velikim otvorenim unutrašnjim prostorima, nekonvencionalnim oblicima i konstrukcijskim rešenjima, često dovode do izraženih problema u pogledu graničnih stanja upotrebljivosti. Izražene vibracije međuspratnih konstrukcija izazvane ljudskim aktivnostima mogu značajno da utiču na funkcionalnost objekta, komfor ljudi i kvalitet života unutar objekta. U ovom radu dat je kratak prikaz proračuna spregnutih nosača na dejstvo vibracija, kao i preporuke za proračun vibracija izazvanih ljudskim aktivnostima.
