AB  - Veliki industrijski razvoj je poslednjih decenija izazvao nekontrolisano iskorišćavanje prirodnih resursa i degradaciju životne sredine, što je dovelo do zabrinutosti društva za posledice koje utiču na stanje životne sredine. 

Izgradnja putne infrastrukture je jedan od glavnih faktora koji doprinose globalnom zagrevanju u oblasti građevinarstva. Procenjeno je da svaki metar izgrađenog puta godišnje izazove emisiju gasova staklene bašte u iznosu od 14,7 kg CO2ek, gde su faza ekstrakcije i proizvodnja materijala glavni procesi koji doprinose ukupnoj emisiji ugljenika i potrošnji energije. (1) To je razlog zašto izbor materijala za izradu kolovoznih konstrukcija direktno utiče na lokalno zagađenje i degradaciju životne sredine.

U ovom radu je razmatrana upotreba bakarne i čelične zgure kao delimične zamene prirodnog agregata u asfaltnim mešavinama i analiziran je životni ciklus kolovoznih konstrukcija, napravljenih od pomenutih mešavina.

Eksperimentalna istraživanja su pokazala da upotreba bakarne i čelične zgure u asfaltnim mešavinama dovodi do povećane potrošnje veziva prilikom spravljanja mešavina i do povećavanja transportne mase, što dovodi do povećane potrošnje energije i negativno utiče na globalno zagrevanje i zdravlje ljudi. Međutim, upotreba ovih industrijskih nusproizvoda u asfaltnim mešavinama dovodi do uštede prirodnih agregata i rešava problem deponovanja ovog otpadnog materijala na odlagalištima, što je veoma značajno sa ekološkog aspekta.
AB  - In recent decades, large-scale industrial development has caused uncontrolled exploitation of natural resources and environmental degradation, which has led to society's concern about the consequences affecting the state of the environment.

The construction of road infrastructure is one of the main factors contributing to global warming in the construction industry. It has been estimated that each meter of road constructed annually causes greenhouse gas emissions of 14.7 kg CO2eq, where the extraction phase and material production are the main processes that contribute to the total carbon emissions and energy consumption. (1) This is the reason why the choice of materials for the construction of pavement structures directly affects local pollution and environmental degradation.

In this paper, the use of copper and steel slag as a partial replacement of natural aggregate in asphalt mixtures was discussed and the life cycle of pavement structures made from the aforementioned mixtures was analyzed.

Experimental research has shown that the use of copper and steel slag in asphalt mixtures leads to increased consumption of binder for preparation of mixtures and to an increase in transport mass, which cause increased energy consumption and negatively affect global warming and human health. However, the use of these industrial by-products in asphalt mixtures leads to the saving of natural aggregates and solves the problem of depositing this waste material in landfills, which is very significant from an environmental point of view.

AB  - Osnovni cilj prilikom razvoja novih metoda ispitivanja bitumena je da se odrede karakteristike veziva koje su vezane za ponašanje asfaltnih slojeva u fazi eksplatacije i za nastanak dominantnih oštećenja na fleksibilnim kolovoznim konstrukcijama: kolotraga, pukotina usled zamora i termičkih pukotina. Ova ispitivanja je neophodno sprovesti pri  različitim nivoima starenja, koje treba da simulira eksplatacione uslove za bitumen i asfaltne mešavine tokom njihovog životnog veka.
U radu je prikazan razvoj specifikacija za ispitivanje putnih i polimer modifikovanih bitumena, kao i savremeni postupci za ispitivanje karakteristika bitumena koji se primenjuju u Sjedinjenim Američkim Državama, u kontekstu unapređenja specifikacija Superpave, kao i u Evropi, pre svega imajući u vidu očekivano novo izdanje standarda EN 14023 koji se odnosi na polimer modifikovane bitumene. Posebno su obrađene metode za karakterizaciju veziva na visokim eksplatacionim temperaturama, kao što su metoda MSCR (Multiple Stress Creep Recovery), razvijena u SAD, i Brza metoda za karakterizaciju bitumena BTSV razvijena u Nemačkoj. Na kraju je dat pregled novouvedenih ispitivanja u okviru predloga specifikacija za polimer modifikovane bitumene.

AB  - This study aims to assess the feasibility of using copper slag (CS) in asphalt mixtures in both the surface and base
layers of road pavements. For this purpose, two sets of asphalt mixtures with different CS content (15 and 30%)
and fraction sizes (0/8 and 0/16 mm) were prepared. The optimal binder content of each mixture was determined
using the Marshall mix design method. Their laboratory performances were investigated and compared
with the properties of reference asphalt mixtures, i.e. mixtures consisting exclusively of virgin materials. Test
results showed that adding CS to the mixture for the surface layer improved stiffness and rutting resistance and
had almost no negative impacts on the remaining properties apart from cracking resistance. Further, the addition
of CS to the base-layer mixture improved cracking resistance, but negatively affected stiffness, rutting and fatigue
resistance. In both cases, adding CS did not influence the strength, water sensitivity or freeze–thaw resistance.
From a leaching perspective, the results showed that leachates gathered from the asphalt mixtures designed for
the surface layer did not contain heavy metals. Overall, it can be concluded that CS has a potential to be used as
an appropriate aggregate substitute for virgin aggregates in asphalt mixtures for both surface and base layers.

Ocena stanja nosivosti fleksibilnih kolovoznih konstrukcija

AB  - Većina putnih uprava širom sveta, pa čak i u zemljama u razvoju, danas se fokusira na održavanje, rehabilitaciju i unapređenje postojeće putne mreže, s obzirom da je putna mreža u najvećem delu kompletirana. Posedovanje tačnih informacija o stanju i preostalom veku trajanja kolovoza je od suštinskog značaja za njihovo efikasno održavanje. Cilj ovog rada je da prikaže pregled postojećeg stanja u pogledu nedestruktivnih metoda za ispitivanje nosivosti kolovoza, kao i da se da pregled različitih pristupa dostupnih za analizu stanja nosivosti kolovoza, kako na nivou mreže, tako i na nivou projekta. U radu je dat pregled najrasprostranjenijih uređaja za merenje ugiba sa fokusom na novorazvijene uređaje za kontinualna merenja na nivou mreže pri brzinama saobraćajnog toka, kao i raspoloživih alata i tehnika za procenu nosivosti kolovoznih konstrukcija.
AB  - The focus of most road agencies around the world, and even in developing countries, is shifting nowadays from construction of new road sections to maintenance, rehabilitation and improvement of the existing road networks. Having accurate information about the condition and remaining service life of pavements is fundamental for their efficient maintenance. The objective of this paper is to present review of current state of the practice of non-destructive testing of pavement structural condition, as well as to present review of different approaches available for analysis of pavement structural condition, both at network and project levels. Paper presents review of the most widely used deflection measuring devices with focus of newly developed devices for continuous network level measurements at highway speeds and provides review of available tools and techniques for assessment of pavement structural capacity.

AB  - У раду је дат приказ неколико иновативних технолошких решења чија се примена може очекивати у будућности у контексту све оштријих захтева у погледу саобраћајног оптерећења и услова околине, имајући у виду специфичан утицај климатских промена на путну инфраструктуру, а поштујући принципе одрживог развоја.
Посебно су прказане могућности модификације битумена и асфалтних мешавина са отпадном гумом и пластиком, производња и уграђивање асфалтних мешавина по топлом поступку, као и поступци за само-зацељивање асфалтних слојева.
Применом ових поступака омогућава се побољшање карактеристика асфалтних слојева и њиховог експлоатационог века, смањење трошкова одржавања, и смањење негативног утицаја на околину проузрокованог радовима на изградњи и одржавању путева.
AB  - The paper presents several innovative technologies whose implementation can be expected in the future in the context of increasingly demanding requirements regarding traffic loading and environmental conditions, bearing in mind the specific impact of climate change on road infrastructure, while respecting the principles of sustainable development.
In particular, the possibilities of modifying bitumen and asphalt mixtures with waste rubber and plastic, production and compaction of warm asphalt mixtures, as well as procedures for self-healing of asphalt layers are shown.
By applying these procedures, it is possible to improve the characteristics of asphalt layers and their operational life, reduce maintenance costs, and reduce the negative impact on the environment caused by road construction and maintenance works.

concerning more and more road authorities. The impact of climate change on road infrastructure can be twofold: extreme climatic events can cause infrastructure damage and traffic disruptions in a short period of time, while long-term climate change can jeopardize the durability and functionality of road infrastructure over a longer period and cause more intensive maintenance work. The objective of the paper was to review potential impact of the most relevant climatic parameters like temperature and precipitation, on the long-term performance of primarily flexible pavements, since they constitute vast majority of road networks in the region. The case study has shown that increase in temperature of 1 oC would result in flexible pavement life reduction between 6% and 10%, depending on pavement structure and traffic loading. The road infrastructure design in the future would require taking into account future climate changes and not only historical climate information. In particular, it will be necessary to adapt design criteria regarding temperature and return period of storm flows, as well as selection of component
materials and asphalt mixture design to make more rutting resistant mixtures.

AB  - U poslednje vreme dolazi do povećane potrebe za upotrebom alternativnih i recikliranih materijala prilikom izgradnje puteva usled ograničenih količina kvalitetnog kamenog agregata i novog bitumena. S obzirom da se asfaltni slojevi nakon gubitka upotrebljivosti uklanjaju, najčešče struganjem, a zatim deponuju zauzimajući veliku površinu, višestruke koristi se mogu ostvariti ukoliko se takav materijal ponovo upotrebi za proizvodnju novih asfaltnih mešavina. Međutim, upotreba struganog asfalta (eng. Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement – RAP), pogotovo u većim količinama (>25%), nije tako jednostavna usled mnogobrojnih ograničenja, počevši od administrativnih i tehnoloških, pa sve do ograničenja vezanih za karakteristike RAP-a kao komponentalnog materijala. U okviru ovog rada su određene karakteristike asfaltnih mešavina koje se koriste za izradu nosećeg sloja kolovozne konstrukcije, sa 15% RAP-a, koja se rutinski koristi širom sveta, i sa 50% RAP-a, projektovane primenom nove metodologije. Karakteristike mešavina sa RAP-om su zatim upoređene sa karakteristikama kontrolne mešavine, napravljene od novih materijala. Najpre je određena zapreminska struktura uzoraka za ispitivanje, a zatim su ispitani njihova krutost, osetljivost na dejstvo vode, otpornost na trajnu deformaciju i otpornost na zamor. Rezultati ispitivanja su pokazali da asfaltne mešavine sa struganim asfaltom imaju slične karakteristike kao kontrolna mešavina i da postoji potencijal da se one koriste u znatno većoj meri nego što se trenutno koriste.

AB  - Temperatura asfaltnih slojeva ima, pored opterećenja, najznačajniji uticaj na veličinu ugiba ispod samog opterećenja ili blisko opterećenju. Postojeći modeli za faktore korekcije razvijeni su na bazi inostranih iskustava i ne održavaju u potpunosti asfaltne mešavine koje se primenjuju u regionu. U radu je prikazano istraživanje sa ciljem da se razviju modeli za faktore korekcije koji se mogu primeniti u postupcima analize ugiba i proračuna nosivosti postojećih kolovoznih konstrukcija. Istraživanje se sastoji iz tri dela. Moduli asfaltnih mešavina AB11s za habajući sloj i BNS 22sA za gornji noseći sloj dobijeni su na osnovu master krivih za ove mešavine koje su konstruisane na bazi laboratorijskih ispitivanja modula krutosti. Proračun ugiba vršen je programom EVERSTRESS za tri nivoa fleksibilnih i polukrutih kolovoznih konstrukcija, sa debljinama asfaltnih slojeva od 100 mm do 210 mm. Dobijeni ugibi poslužili su za proračun faktora korekcije na referentnu temperaturu od 20oC za raspon temperatura od 10oC do 30oC koji se smatra realnim i poželjnim za merenje ugiba fleksibilnih kolovoznih konstrukcija. Konačno, model za faktore korekcije razvijen je i validiran primenom neuronskih mreža. Model obuhvata fleksibilne i polukrute kolovozne konstrukcije, i pored temperature asfaltnih slojeva uključuje i debljinu slojeva i rastojanje ugibomera od centra opterećenja.
AB  - The temperature of asphalt layers have, in addition to loading, the most significant influence on the pavement deflections below the load and within the deflection bowl. Existing models for temperature correction factors have been developed on the basis of foreign experience and do not take into account the asphalt mixtures used in the region. The paper presents a research with the aim of developing models for correction factors that can be applied in the procedures of deflection analysis and bearing capacity calculation of existing pavement structures. The research consists of three parts. The stiffness moduli of asphalt mixtures AC11s for the wearing course and AC 22sA for the base layer were obtained from their master curves, which were constructed on the basis of laboratory tests of stiffness modules. The calculation of deflection was performed by the EVERSTRESS program for three levels of flexible and semi-rigid pavement structures, with asphalt layer thicknesses from 100 mm to 210 mm. The obtained deflections were used for the calculation of the correction factor to the reference temperature of 20oC for the temperature range from 10oC to 30oC, which is considered realistic and desirable for deflection measurements on flexible pavement structures. Finally, a model for correction factors was developed and validated using neural networks. The model includes flexible and semi-rigid pavement structures, and in addition to the temperature of the asphalt layers, it also includes the thickness of the layers and the distance of the deflecton from the center of the loading.

AB  - In transport infrastructure concessions, the sources of revenue to the private partner (or concessionaire) may include (i) the infrastructure users (e.g., landing fees, in the case of airports), (ii) the government (e.g. through availability payments), and (iii) both users and government, which might be called a hybrid concession. An example of the latter is a highway concession where the concessionaire charges tolls to the road users but, because of relatively low revenues, the government agency complements the toll revenue with availability payments. Focusing on airports, this paper summarizes the cases where it may be justified for the government to complement users’ revenues and describes a model developed for the financial assessment of airport concessions involving payments by both the government and airport users, through the collection of several charges. The methodology described in the paper is also used to review the flexibility in new or ongoing airport concessions to mitigate traffic risks, which have been aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The methodology can also be applied to other forms of transport infrastructure. A practical application of the model is demonstrated in the paper, using publicly available information, as well as basic assumptions, to build case studies for the Larnaca and Paphos airports in Cyprus. The model can also be used to carry out sensitivity analyses of the impact of key input parameters on outputs such as the investor’s return on equity and annual debt service cover ratio.

AB  - This recommendation is based on the results of an inter-laboratory study organised by the RILEM technical committee TC 264-RAP "Asphalt Pavement Recycling"—Task Group 3 (TG3) focusing on Asphalt Binder for Recycled Asphalt Mixture. The TG3 aimed to evaluate the effect of a specific family of materials known as asphalt recycling agent (ARA) on the aged binder under different configurations. Even though ageing is an irreversible phenomenon, effective ARA must have the capability to improve the flexibility of the bituminous materials and their resistance against cracking susceptibility with no adverse effect on the rutting resistance of pavements containing reclaimed asphalt. A total of 17 participating laboratories analysed the properties of binder blends composed of aged binder from reclaimed asphalt in three different contents (60, 80, 100%), ARA and virgin binder. The physical properties of the blends were thoroughly evaluated through traditional and rheological binder testing. This recommendation proposes to restore the original material properties at low and intermediate temperatures (i.e. cracking resistance) while balancing the high-temperature characteristics (i.e. rutting susceptibility) with durable impact throughout the progression of ageing phenomena. Therefore, using of the Dynamic Shear Rheometer is foreseen as a more suitable and sustainable means to evaluate binder blends containing an asphalt recycling agent. Compared with conventional testing, the proposed approach requires fewer materials while resulting in a faster experimental procedure with one single test.

AB  - The use of rejuvenators has seen a consistent increase over the years in  the  asphalt  pavement  industry.  This  is  due  to  the  need  for  maximizing  the  demand  for  incorporating  a  higher  amount  of  Reclaimed  Asphalt  (RA)  in  the  pavement asphalt mixtures. In order to tackle this challenge, the Task Group 3, focusing on asphalt binders and additives, of the RILEM TC RAP conducted an interlaboratory  activity  to  evaluate  the  effect  of  aging  on  blends  of  virgin  and  rejuvenated RA binders. A set of conventional tests including penetration value at  25  °C, softening  point  temperature  and  rheological  measurements  by  means  of Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) were selected to involve a large number of participants.  A  binder,  recovered  from  field  RA,  was  treated  with  a  bio-based rejuvenator and blended with a virgin binder to simulate recycling at three different  percentages  60  %,  80  %,  and  100  %.  These  blends,  as  well  as  the  pure  virgin  binder,  were  next  short  and  long  term  aged  and  tested  to  evaluate  the  changes  in  the  corresponding  properties.  Relatively  consistent  results  were  obtained for the entire set of blends. The aging of combined rejuvenated RA and virgin  binders  was  comparable  to  that  experienced  for  the  pure  virgin  binder.  DSR data provided a more precise evolution of the impact of aging on the materials.

AB  - A financial/economic crisis may have an adverse effect on transport public-private partnerships (PPPs) as both traffic demand is negatively influenced, and governments are further under pressure. However, research on awarded road PPP contracts over a 20-year period in the European Union (EU) and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) showed that the market slowdown is brief and followed by a re-bounce leading to an overall upward trend. The LAC region has experienced multiple financial setbacks with no significant change in the PPP market structure as opposed to the EU, where significant changes were observed concerning a shift in the remuneration schemes employed.

AB  - The  use  of  Reclaimed  Asphalt  (RA)  into  new  asphalt  mixtures  becomes  an  inevitable  step  for  sustainable  infrastructure.  Saving natural,  non-renewable materials, such as bitumen and aggregates, the asphalt industry is moving forward with more recycling. Although asphalt is a 100% reusable material, high recycling rates are not yet easily achievable due to many limitations, going from technical specifications through RA properties to asphalt plant capabilities. The  rate  of  RA, which  may  be  used  within  a  new  asphalt  mixture,  depends  on  many aspects: variability, moisture and fines contents, presence of polymers, brittleness of aged binder, etc. The latter is directly linked to the degree of the RA binder ageing. As higher RA content increases the asphalt mixture stiffness, the material becomes more brittle and prone to cracking. The use of recycling additives is  taking recycling to the next level by solving these issues. With the growing  need  of  the  industry  for asphalt  recycling  agents,  many  products  have  appeared on the market with different effects. In this study, three asphalt recycling agents (two industrial and one alternative) were used as rejuvenators.  Blends with50% of rejuvenated RA binder (RAb) and virgin binder were subjected to different ageing levels: short (RTFOT), long (PAV for 20h) and prolonged (PAV for 60h). After each ageing level, physical, rheological and chemical properties were evaluated addressing the ageing behaviour of the additives used. Testing results showed that one industrial additive lost almost all its properties after prolonged ageing, while the other additives showed comparable results with the second industrial product.

abstract = "The  use  of  Reclaimed  Asphalt  (RA)  into  new  asphalt  mixtures  becomes  an  inevitable  step  for  sustainable  infrastructure.  Saving natural,  non-renewable materials, such as bitumen and aggregates, the asphalt industry is moving forward with more recycling. Although asphalt is a 100% reusable material, high recycling rates are not yet easily achievable due to many limitations, going from technical specifications through RA properties to asphalt plant capabilities. The  rate  of  RA, which  may  be  used  within  a  new  asphalt  mixture,  depends  on  many aspects: variability, moisture and fines contents, presence of polymers, brittleness of aged binder, etc. The latter is directly linked to the degree of the RA binder ageing. As higher RA content increases the asphalt mixture stiffness, the material becomes more brittle and prone to cracking. The use of recycling additives is  taking recycling to the next level by solving these issues. With the growing  need  of  the  industry  for asphalt  recycling  agents,  many  products  have  appeared on the market with different effects. In this study, three asphalt recycling agents (two industrial and one alternative) were used as rejuvenators.  Blends with50% of rejuvenated RA binder (RAb) and virgin binder were subjected to different ageing levels: short (RTFOT), long (PAV for 20h) and prolonged (PAV for 60h). After each ageing level, physical, rheological and chemical properties were evaluated addressing the ageing behaviour of the additives used. Testing results showed that one industrial additive lost almost all its properties after prolonged ageing, while the other additives showed comparable results with the second industrial product.",

AB  - Governments not always have the funds to build transport and other infrastructure projects that are economically justified and environmentally and socially sound. Under certain circumstances, projects meeting such conditions can be implemented by involving private financing, through public-private partnerships (PPP), which is a means to get projects completed by leveraging scarce public resources. In a PPP project, the sources of revenue to the private partner (or concessionaire) may include (i) the users of the facility (e.g., road tolling), (ii) the government (e.g. through availability payments, capital grants and shadow tolls), and (iii) both users and government, which is usually called a hybrid concession. As a key step in considering attracting private investors for such projects, decision makers and practitioners need to assess their financial viability, an endeavor that can be greatly facilitated by relatively simple tools now available. This paper reviews and provides case studies of two existing tools for assessing the financial viability of: (i) hybrid road PPP projects, which involve both tolls and availability payments; and (ii) output- and performance-based road contracts (OPBRC), which involves payments by the government. The main output generated by both models include the project’s internal rate of return, equity internal rate of return, annual debt service coverage ratio and the present value of the government’s cash flow.

AB  - The need for road (re)construction materials is constantly growing. At the same time, there
is a limited quantity of new, high-quality materials available and a buildup of secondary/recycled
construction materials. One possible solution may be the use of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) in asphalt mixtures instead of natural aggregate (NA), which also promotes economic and environmental sustainability. The potential use of fine and coarse RCA in road asphalt mixtures is analyzed in this work. Nine asphalt mixtures were tested for base course layers, where RCA was used as a NA substitute. The impact of the quantity of RCA (up to 45% by mass) on the resulting physical and mechanical properties of asphalt mixtures was investigated, and consequently compared with the properties of a reference control mixture produced with NA only. Results reveal that the addition of RCA requires higher bitumen in comparison to the control mixture (up to 1%). Consequently, mixtures with RCA had 15-20% lower stiffness and up to 26% higher critical fatigue strain value (E6). Although RCA mixtures contained more bitumen, their low-temperature resistance was slightly inferior compared with the control mixture (failure temperatures were up to 4.3 C higher). In conclusion, asphalt mixtures with up to 45% RCA can be used without substantially reducing performance.

AB  - This paper presents an experimental study of the influence of a reinforcement system on fatigue resistance of asphalt concrete. For purpose of this research, unreinforced and grid-reinforced asphalt specimens were tested. Both groups of specimens were manufactured using non-standard method. A 1-ton roller had been used to prepare two-layered slabs with total height of 70 mm. Further, slabs were sawed to obtain beams 6 cm wide and 400 mm long. The total height of each beam was 50 mm, including 20 mm of the bottom layer and 30 mm of the upper layer. The reinforced specimens contained self-adhesive geosynthetic grid between layers. The four point bending beam test, according to EN 12697-24:2012, was used for fatigue testing, while results were analyzed using various failure criteria. The experiment helped to quantify the extension of fatigue life that can be obtained by reinforcement, depending on the selected testing conditions and fatigue criteria.

Influence of coarse recycled concrete aggregate on the durability of asphalt mixtures

AB  - Until recently, coarse recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) has been used for the production of new concrete and soil stabilization, as well as for materials applied in road pavement construction, primarily for unbound base and sub-base layers. This paper presents the results of a study which objective was to assess the possibility of using coarse RCA in asphalt mixtures. 
The experimental research, shown in this paper, included testing of four asphalt mixtures made with coarse RCA (4/22.4 mm) as a partial substitution of natural aggregate, in the amount of 0% (control mixture), 15%, 30% and 45%, by mass. All asphalt mixtures were designed for the base course. 
The optimum bitumen content increased from 3.4%, for control and mixture with 15% RCA, to 3.5% for the mixtures with 30% RCA and 45% RCA. The rutting and fatigue resistance of asphalt mixtures with RCA were higher compared with the control mixture. Proportional rutting depth ranged between 3.9% and 4.8% for mixtures with RCA, while 5% was measured for the referent mixture. Estimated strain values for a lifetime of 106 load cycles increased from 124 με, for control mixture, to 129 με, 145.8 με and 137.4 με measured for mixtures with 15, 30 and 45% of RCA, respectively. Two out of three RCA mixtures had higher indirect tensile strength ratios, varying from +3% and +13.7% relative to the referent mixture. The results obtained by water resistance testing of mixture with 30% RCA were 4.7% lower than for the control mixture.

Asphalt concrete layers are the most significant elements of roads; but due to their position, they are exposed to the influence of many external factors (water, sun, freeze, fuel) which affect their lifespan. At the same time, limited quantities of new materials are forcing investors to use available alternative materials that fulfill quality requirements and possibly reduce costs. Since filler is the second most expensive ingredient of asphalt mixtures, it becomes necessary to improve its properties by introducing certain additives or alternative fillers that may be used instead of mineral filler. This study examines the use of hydrated lime and cement bypass dust (CBD) as partial and full replacements of limestone filler. Within this study, one mixture contained hydrated lime as a partial replacement of limestone filler and two mixtures contained CBD as a partial and full replacement of limestone filler in asphalt mixture AC 11s SURF B50/70. The properties of these three mixtures were compared with a control mixture (CM) that contained limestone mineral filler. All mixtures were tested to determine their: volumetric properties, freeze-thaw resistance, water sensitivity, rutting resistance and stiffness. Results indicate that the substitution of CBD with limestone decreases optimal binder content and improves rutting resistance, while hydrated lime substitution significantly improves freeze-thaw resistance.

AB  - Kao značajan pokazatelj stanja aerodromskih saobraćajnih površina podužna ravnost, bitno utiče na udobnost i bezbednost putnika i članova posade pri kretanju aviona po manevarskim površinama i poletno-sletnoj stazi aerodroma, zbog čega je lociranje neravnih zona i njihova što brža sanacija jedan od glavnih zadataka pri upravljanju aerodromskom infrastrukturom. Za ocenu stanja ravnosti dostupno je nekoliko različitih metodologija. Neke od njih, kao što je određivanje indeksa IRI (International Roughness Index), preuzete su iz prakse na drumskim saobraćajnicama. Kompanija Boing (Boeing) je razvila metodologiju koja uzima u obzir razlike u konstrukciji aviona i drumskih vozila i ta metodologija se nalazi u okviru standarda ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization). Pored toga, razvijaju se i programi, koji pomoću matematičkih modela, simuliraju kretanje aviona po merenom profilu i na taj način određuju parametre koji ukazuju na stepen ravnosti površine. U ovom radu su prikazane navedene metode, kao i njihova primena na konkretnom primeru poletno-sletne staze.
AB  - As a significant indicator of the condition of airport surfaces, the longitudinal roughness significantly affects the comfort and safety of passengers and crew members when navigating the airplanes on the airport taxiways and runways, which is why the location of uneven zones and their prompt rehabilitation is one of main tasks in managing the airport infrastructure. Several different methodologies are available to assess the pavement surface roughness. Some of them, such as the International Roughness Index (IRI), have been taken from road practices. Boing has developed a methodology that takes into account differences in the design of aircraft and road vehicles and this methodology is specified within the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) standard. In addition, various softwares are being developed which, using mathematical models, simulate aircraft movement along the measured profile, and thus determine the parameters related to longitudinal roughness of the surface. This paper presents the methods and their application on a concrete example of an airport  runway pavement.

AB  - Pavement management systems tend to lead to sound decision making regarding the optimal maintenance strategy which is, in most cases, based on the achievement of minimal total society costs which are defined as the sum of user cost and road agency cost. In the last several years, in addition to the user cost related to the costs of gasoline or diesel fuel, motor oil, spare parts, pneumatics, costs related to travel time and accidents, costs related to environmental impacts have been also considered as significant contributors to overall costs. The objective of this paper is to present a model that integrates Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA), on a network level. The model has been applied on the national road network of Serbia. The results show how this integrated approach leads to more sound decision making compared with current state of practice.

Effect of Different Types of Fly Ash on Properties of Asphalt Mixtures

AB  - In order to preserve natural resources, the use of waste and alternative materials in the construction and maintenance of roads is increasingly investigated. This paper presents the results of testing wearing course asphalt mixtures (AC 11s SURF 50/70) made with various percentages of fly ash, used as a partial or complete substitute for mineral filler. The properties of fly ash were determined to assess their suitability for use in asphalt mixtures. The experimental research was performed on asphalt samples containing fly ash from three different sources, with 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of mineral filler substitution. The control mixture was prepared with 100% of mineral filler. The paper presents the volumetric composition, stability, and flow of asphalt mixtures tested on standard Marshall’s samples, water sensitivity, and resistance to permanent deformation. The results of this study indicate that a satisfactory volumetric composition can be achieved by adding fly ash, while the bulk density and voids of the mineral and asphalt mixture generally depend on the type of fly ash and its content. The stability and flow of mixtures with fly ash are favourable compared with the control mixture. The water sensitivity of mixtures with fly ash is generally lower compared with the control mixture and depends on the type and percentage of fly ash. The resistance to permanent deformation of the asphalt mixtures depends on the fly ash type and percentage. The results obtained in this study are an important step towards broader implementation of fly ash in asphalt mixtures.

Impact of CO2 Emissions on Low Volume Road Maintenance Policy: Case Study of Serbia

AB  - About 20% of the Serbian national road network has sections with low volume traffic. These sections are maintained in relatively poor condition since the maintenance budget is typically allocated to the road sections with most traffic. This paper aims to define the appropriate maintenance policy for keeping these sections in ‘‘optimal’’ condition. The traditional approach has been to consider as optimal the condition leading to the minimum sum of road agency costs and road user costs.
However, currently there is an emphasis on including environmental cost (greenhouse gas emissions, in particular) into pavement management systems. This extends the concept of optimum by defining it as the maintenance policy leading to the minimum sum of (a) road agency costs, (b) road user costs, and (c) the cost to society of CO2 emissions. Three potential influencing factors are further analyzed: traffic loading, pavement structural number, and the initial condition of the road section.
The World Bank’s Road Network Evaluation Tools (RONET) model was used to analyze the Serbian low volume road network and develop the optimal maintenance policy. The results show that the cost of CO2 emissions plays an important role in calculating the optimal policy, but unlike the high volume parts of the road network, in the case of low volume roads, a substantial part of total emissions is related to the production and placement of new pavement layers, rather than from vehicle emissions.

Mogućnost primene bakarne zgure u asfaltnim mešavinama

AB  - Brz industrijski razvoj tokom poslednjih decenija doveo je do stvaranja raznovrsnog industrijskog otpada koji nameće ozbiljne ekološke probleme. U više navrata su vršeni pokušaji da se poveća ponovna upotreba otpadnih i alternativnih materijala za izgradnju građevinskih objekata. Jedan od tih materijala je i bakarna zgura koja nastaje topljenjem i preradom rude bakra. Cilj ovog rada je istraživanje mogućnosti primene bakarne zgure iz RTB–a Bor u asfaltnim mešavinama za habajuće slojeve kolovoznih konstrukcija. U tu svrhu izvršeno je ispitivanje dve grupe asfaltnih mešavina AB11s sa različitim procentom sadržaja bakarne zgure, kao delimične zamene prirodnog agregata. Procentualno učešće bakarne zgure u mešavinama je 25% i 50% frakcija 2/4, 4/8 i 8/11,2 mm. Dobijeni rezultati su upoređivani sa kontrolnom mešavinom. Pored fizičko – mehaničkih karakteristika zgure (zapreminske mase, upijanja vode, drobljivosti materijala, prionljivosti zrna za bitumen, oblika zrna), predmet ovog istražvanja je projektovanje asfaltnih mešavina po metodi Maršala i ispitivanje otpornosti mešavina na dejstvo vode, krutosti mešavina i otpornosti na trajnu deformaciju. Rezultati ovih ispitivanja pokazuju da asfaltne mešavine sa zgurom imaju veću otpornost na dejstvo vode, ali i smanjenu otpornost na trajnu defromaciju, manju krutost na niskim frekvencijama (visokim temeraturama) i veću krutosti pri visokim frekvencijama (niskim temperaturama).
AB  - Rapid industrial development over the last decades has led to the creation of a diversified industrial waste that poses serious environmental problems. On several occasions attempts have been made to increase the reuse of waste and alternative materials for the construction of civil engineering structures. One of these materials is the copper slag that is byproduct of melting and processing of copper ore. The objective of this paper is to investigate the possibility of using copper slag from RTB Bor in asphalt mixtures for wearing courses of pavement structures. For this purpose, the testing of two asphalt mixtures AB11s with different percentages of the content of copper slag, as a partial replacement of the natural aggregate, was carried out. The replacement percentage of copper slag was 25% and 50% of fractions 2/4, 4/8 and 8/11.2 mm. The obtained results were compared with the control mixture. In addition to the physico - mechanical characteristics of the slag (density, water absorption, toughness and abrasion characteristics, affinity between slag and bitumen, particle shape), the subject of this research is the design of asphalt mixtures according to the Marshall method and testing of the water resistance, stiffness and resistance to permanent deformation of asphalt mixtures with slag. The results of these tests show that asphalt mixtures with cooper slag have better water resistance, but lower resistance to permanent deformation, lower stiffness at low frequencies (high temperatures) and higher stiffness at high temperatures (low frequencies).

AB  - Флексибилне коловозне конструкције су подложне појави пукотина услед замора и термичких утицаја, а значајан проблем представља и појава рефлектованих пукотина код полукрутих коловозних конструкција или код крутих које су пресвучене слојевима асфалта. Армирањем асфалтних слојева применом геомрежа, могуће је значајно успорити, ако не и спречити појаву пукотина. У оквиру овог рада приказани су резултати експерименталног истраживања чији је циљ био да се утврди утицај примене геомреже на отпорност асфалт бетона на замор. Испитана су два двослојна сета узорака, са и без геомреже (ојачани и неојачани). Испитне гредице су исечене из плоча које су припремљене нестандардном методом, употребом ваљка од једне тоне. Дебљина доњег слоја асфалта у гредицама је била 20 mm, дебљина горњег слоја 30 mm, ширина 60 mm и дужина 400 mm. Ојачани узорци садржали су самолепљиву геосинтетичку мрежу велике чврстоће између слојева. Испитивање отпорности асфaлтних мешавина на замор спроведено је опитом савијања гредица у четири тачке, док су за анализу резултата исптивања коришћена два критеријума за дефинисање замора. Истраживање је помогло да се процени продужетак века на замор применом геомрежа у зависности од примењеног критеријума за дефинисање замора.
AB  - Flexible pavement structures are prone to cracking due to the fatigue and thermal influence, while a significant problem presents the appearance of reflective cracking in semi-rigid pavement structures or in rigid pavements overlaid with asphalt concrete. Reinforcement of asphalt concrete by using geogrids substantially slow down, if not stop crack propagation. The paper presents the results of an experimental study aimed at determining the influence of geogrid application on the fatigue resistance of asphalt concrete. Two double layered sets of specimens, with and without a grid, were tested (reinforced and unreinforced). Testing beams were cut from the slabs prepared by a non-standard method, using a one-ton roller. The thickness of the bottom layer of asphalt beams was 20 mm, the thickness of the upper layer was 30 mm, the width was 60 mm and the length 400 mm. Reinforced samples contained a high-strength adhesive geosynthetic grid between layers. The testing of fatigue resistance of asphalt mixtures was carried out by application of the four-point bending beam test, while two failure criteria were used to analyze the testing results. Presented research helped to quantify the extension of fatigue life that can be obtained by reinforcement, depending on the fatigue criteria.
