Streamflow measurement by salinity dilution method

AB  - Streamflow measurement often requires a clearly structured measurement reach. Velocity distribution can then be measured using a current meter or by constructing a hydraulic section control (weirs or flumes). However, in turbulent hilly streams such methods are difficult to implement. This paper presents a measuring method suitable for a spot flow gauging in natural streamflows. It is based on the measurement of a tracer concentration (usually common table salt). The method enables accurate flow measurement without determining the cross-section area. The only condition that has to be fulfilled is the uniform mixing of a tracer across the downstream measurement section. The paper describes the theoretical basis and procedure for tracer concentration measuring. The results of the method implementation are presented as well as the tutorial carried out by the students of the Civil Engineering Faculty in Belgrade. Finally, suitability of the method in different flow conditions is commented.
AB  - Merenje protoka u otvorenim tokovima najčešće zahteva postojanje jasno uređene merne deonice. Kod brdskih neuređenih bujičnih tokova, u uslovima kada nije potrebno kontinualno merenje protoka i kada se ne zna tačan proticajni presek, merenje protoka je moguće obaviti metodom zasnovanom na merenju koncentracije trasera (obično kuhinjske soli). Jedini uslov koji se mora zadovoljiti je da postoji dobro mešanje trasera u vodi po poprečnom preseku. U radu se daje osnovna teorijska postavka, način merenja koncentracije trasera, rezultati nekoliko izvedenih merenja kao i prikaz vežbe koju izvode studenti na Građevinskom fakultetu u Beogradu. Na kraju rada se daju i komentari o primenljivosti metode u različitim uslovima.

Analytical optimization method for water supply systems modeling

AB  - The consequence of an uncertainty of water supply systems models’ parameters is the discrepancy between simulation results and measurement data. The best values of parameters that can be obtained from available measurement data and given criteria are defined as optimal or relevant values, and the procedure is defined as model’s calibration. The paper presents the procedure for pipe roughness optimization using PEST method, in the case study of Bečej Water Supply System. The influence of a sampling design for calibration on the optimization results is analyzed as well, and recommendations for future investigations are presented. The gained experience showed that no matter what tools for the process automation are available, the human factor is still the most important. The selection of optimization parameters and the understanding of obtained results are postulates for the quality calibration procedure.
AB  - Posledica neodređenosti parametara modela vodovodnih sistema je razlika između rezultata simulacije i podataka dobijenih merenjem. Najbolje vrednosti parametara do kojih se može doći na osnovu raspoloživih merenja i zadatih kriterijuma nazivaju se optimalne ili merodavne vrednosti, a postupak kalibracija modela. U ovom radu se, na primeru matematičkog modela vodovoda Bečej, prikazuje postupak optimizacije hrapavosti cevi primenom PEST metode. Takođe, analizira se uticaj izbora mernih mesta u sistemu na rezultat optimizacije i daju se preporuke za buduća istraživanja. Iskustvo je pokazalo da, bez obzira na sve raspoložive alate za automatizaciju procesa, uspešnost kalibracije najviše zavisi od ljudskog faktora. Pravilan izbor optimizacionih parametara, uz razumevanje dobijenih rezultata, je preduslov za kvalitetan proces kalibracije.

Water losses reduction by managing operational pressure

AB  - Managing operational pressure is essential for effective reduction of water losses, so system operation is directed towards its maximum reduction with fulfilling the demand of each customer. With this objective, the variable speed drive for pumps was installed on the drinking water treatment plant of Bečej Water Supply System, with downstream pressure control. The reduction of the night pressure for 50% resulted in significant water savings and, hence financial savings. The further improvement can be achieved with the daily pressure regulation, where control can be taken on the most critical location in the network, taking care of the supplying during the periods of the maximum hour consumption.
AB  - Upravljanje radnim pritiskom je ključ efikasnog smanjenja gubitaka, pa se rad vodovodnih sistema često usmerava ka njegovom maksimalnom smanjenju, uz zadovoljenje potreba svih potrošača. U tom cilju, na postrojenju za tretman vode za piće vodovoda Bečej je ugrađen frekventni regulator sa kontrolom rada pumpi prema pritisku na samom postrojenju. Smanjenjem noćnog pritiska na ulazu u sistem za 50% postignuta je značajna ušteda vode, a samim tim i finansijskih sredstava. Dalje poboljšanje se može postići dnevnom regulacijom pritiska vodeći računa o snabdevanju tokom perioda maksimalne potrošnje, primenom složenih kontrola rada pumpi, na osnovu pritiska merenog na kritičnim lokacijama u mreži. .

AB  - One of the reasons for discrepancy between results of the Water Supply Systems hydraulic simulation and measurement data is the uncertainty of values of mathematical model parameters. Because of that, the best possible values that can be obtained from available measurement data and given criteria are used for simulation. Those values are defined as optimal or relevant values for simulation purposes, and they are obtained through the model calibration process. AB  - Jedan od razloga što postoji razlika između rezultata simulacije rada vodovodnih sistema i podataka dobijenih merenjima je i nepoznavanje tačnih vrednosti parametara matematičkih modela. U simulacijama se koriste najbolje vrednosti parametara do kojih se može doći na osnovu raspoloživih merenja i zadatih kriterijuma. Te vrednosti nazivaju se optimalne ili merodavne vrednosti parametara, a sam proces njihovog dobijanja kalibracija matematičkih modela. U ovom radu se, na primeru matematičkog modela vodovoda Bečej, prikazuje postupak optimizacije hrapavosti cevi primenom PEST metode. Takođe, analizira se uticaj izbora mernih mesta u sistemu na rezultat optimizacije i daju se preporuke za buduća istraživanja. Za kalibraciju modela korišćeni su podaci merenja pritisaka i protoka. Iskustvo je pokazalo da, bez obzira na sve raspoložive alate za automatizaciju procesa, uspešnost kalibracije najviše zavisi od ljudskog faktora. Pravilan izbor ulaznih podataka, uz razumevanje dobijenih rezultata, je preduslov za kvalitetan proces kalibracije.
