AB - In this paper an efficient procedure for obtaining a cohesive law for Mode I timber fracture (crack opening), based on the Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) tests is given. DCB tests were performed on ten European spruce specimens in order to determine the energy release rate vs crack length (R curves). Two crucial parameters - crack length during the experiment and the crack tip opening displacement were obtained using 2D Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique. In order to determine accurate fracture resistance (R curve), procedure which includes calculating cumulative released energy was employed. The cohesive law for Mode I fracture of wood was obtained by differentiation of the strain energy release rate as a function of the crack tip opening displacement. This cohesive law is further implemented in the successful numerical modelling of failure modes in large-scale end-notched glulam beams which were experimentally tested in four-point bending configuration.

AB - This paper presents an experimental procedure for obtaining the fracture resistance (R curve) of solid wood specimens made of spruce. Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) tests were performed in order to determine energy release rate vs crack length in Mode I wood fracture (crack opening). Ten wood specimens were loaded using the Universal Testing Machine and force-displacement curves were recorded. The most important parameter - crack length was monitored as the crack propagates using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method. In order to obtain accurate R curve results, procedure which includes calculating cumulative released energy was employed. The cohesive energy Gf was determined based on the R curves. These results can further be analysed in order to obtain cohesive law for Mode I fracture of wood.

AB - Nowadays, in prefabricated composite construction, composite action between steel beam and concrete slab is often achieved with positioning of shear connectors in envisaged openings of concrete slabs. Prefabricated concrete slabs are used for composite steel-concrete buildings and bridges, both for the construction of new structures and for renovation of existing ones, significantly reducing construction time. Development of different types of shear connectors represent alternative solution to the traditionally used headed studs, considering their shear resistance, stiffness and ductility. New types of shear connectors tend to reduce the construction time and overall construction cost. Mechanically fastened shear connectors represent a viable alternative to headed studs, considering their fast installation process and shear resistance. X-HVB shear connectors are attached to the steel beam with two cartridge fired pins. The first step towards extensive implementation of X-HVB shear connectors in composite construction is to understand their behaviour through experimental investigation. Results of the push-out tests, in accordance to
Eurocode 4, with X-HVB 110 shear connectors positioned in envisaged openings of prefabricated concrete slabs are presented in this paper. The experimental investigation comprised three different specimen’s layout. Group arrangement of X-HVB shear connectors in envisaged openings included specimens with minimal recommended distances and specimens with reduced distances between connectors in both directions. Influence of different installation procedures on overall behaviour of the connection is presented, as well as the orientation of shear connectors relative to the shear force direction. Influence of variations is characterized in terms of failure mechanisms, shear resistance and ductility.

AB - One of the most important acceptance issues regarding the implementation of small-scale wind turbines in urban environments is related to human comfort. Turbine-induced vibrations can have a large influence on small-scale turbine implementation for urban wind harvesting. A typical five-storey steel-framed office building with a roof-mounted, horizontal-axis wind turbine was numerically analysed. The aim of the work was to investigate the increase in vibration after the installation of the turbine. A comparison was made between floor vibrations caused by wind action on the building only and by wind action on the building and turbine combined. The results were then compared with requirements given in various design codes. The main outcome of the analysis is that the installation of the turbine did not compromise the building's serviceability.

AB - The research of shear connectors composed from mechanical couplers with rebar anchors, embedded in concrete, and steel bolts, as a mean of shear transfer in composite connections is presented in the paper. Specific issues related to this type of connections are local concrete pressure in the connector vicinity as well as the shear flow along the connector axis. The experimental research included 18 specimens, arranged in 5 series. Nonlinear numerical analyses using Abaqus software was conducted on corresponding FE models. Different failure modes were analysed, with emphasis on concrete edge failure and bolt shear failure. The influence of key parameters on the behaviour of shear connector was examined: (1) concrete compression strength, (2) bolt tensile strength and diameter and (3) concrete edge distance. It is concluded that bolted shear connectors with mechanical couplers have sufficient capacity to be used as shear connectors in composite structures and that their behaviour is similar to the behaviour of post installed anchors as well as other types of connectors anchored without the head.

AB - In parallel with an experimental investigation of the flexural buckling behaviour of built-up stainless steel columns presented in the accompanying paper (Dobric et al., submitted for publication), a detailed Finite Element Analysis (FEA) has been performed to simulate the experiment and identify the key factors affecting the buckling response. The FEA entailed realistic geometry, measured geometric imperfections and material properties of the specimens. Very good agreement was obtained between the experiment and FEA, which proved the capability of the computational approach to replicate experimental results and predict ultimate buckling loads. In the absence of explicit design rules for flexural buckling resistance of stainless steel closely spaced built-up members, the experimental results were compared with design predictions according to the existing European Standard and American Specification for carbon steel structures. The findings indicate that the mentioned design standards may be very conservative regarding the buckling resistance of stainless steel built-up members; this under-prediction may be associated with the impact assessment of chord slenderness and interconnection stiffness on the buckling response. The main purpose of this research is to establish a qualitative data base reliable for the further quantitative numerical parameter analysis and for the development of new design rules for compressed stainless steel cold-formed built-up members.

AB - Existing design codes for steel-concrete composite structures give only general information about the shear connection provided by headed studs in group arrangement. Grouting of the openings in prefabricated concrete slabs, where the grouped headed studs are placed in the deck pockets is alternative to cast-in-place decks to accomplish fast execution of composite structures. This paper considers the possibility to reduce the distance between the studs within the group, bellow the Eurocode limitations. This may lead to increased competitiveness of the prefabricated construction because more studs are placed in the group if negative effectives of smaller distances between studs are limited. The main purpose of this work is to investigate these limits and propose an analytical calculation model for prediction of the shear resistance of grouped stud arrangements in the deck pockets. An advanced FEA model, validated by results of push-out experiments, is used to analyze the shear behavior of the grouped stud with smaller distance between them than recommended by EN 1994-1. Calculation model for shear resistance, which is consistent with the existing Eurocode rules, is proposed based on a newly introduced equivalent diameter of the stud group, d(G). The new calculation model is validated by comparison to the results of FE parametric study. The distance between the studs in the longitudinal direction and the number of stud rows and columns in the group are considered as the main variables.

AB - The Railway road bridge in Novi Sad is situated on the international railroad Belgrade-Budapest. The bridge is designed for two railway tracks (with design speed of 160 km/h), two road lanes and two footpaths. The bridge structure consists of four structures: two approach composite bridges at the banks and two steel tied network arch bridges over the river and transition structure between two arches. The spans are 27.0+177.0+ 3.0+219.0+48.0 m, totally 474.0 m in length. The rises of arches are 34.0 m and 42.0 m respectively. The width of the bridge is 31.440 m. The arches and ties, as well as the girders of the approach spans, are steel box girders. The decks of all bridge structures are the composite reinforced concrete slabs with thickness of 300 mm, locally 400 mm. The launching was very complex, in both analysis and construction. The arch bridges were fully assembled on the banks and launched by skids over the bank and by pontoons over the river, to the final position on piers. The bridge was designed fully according to European standards and additionally - according to requirements of German codes DIN-Fachbericht 101 to 104 Edition 2009 and Deutsche Bahn Richtlinie 804, Edition 2003. The bridge is, despite of heavy loads and structural complexity, very rational in steel volumes and construction costs as well. The bridge is also, with the arch span of L = 219 m, the bridge with the longest span in the world in the category of tied network arch bridges with two rail tracks. The bridge is open to rail traffic at 7th April 2018.

AB - This paper presents an analysis of bending behaviour of glued laminated timber (glulam) beams reinforced with carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates, based on finite element numerical modelling. Nonlinear 3-dimensional model was developed and validated by experimental tests carried out on unreinforced beams and beams reinforced with two different reinforcement arrangements. Suitable constitutive relationships for each material were utilised in the model, as well as anisotropic plasticity theory for timber in compression. Adhesive bond between CFRP plate and timber was modelled as a perfect connection. Beam failure in the model was defined by maximum stress criterion. The predicted behaviour of beams has shown good agreement with the experimental results in relation to load-deflection relationship, ultimate load, elastic stiffness and strain profile distribution. The non-linear behaviour of reinforced beams before failure was also achieved in the numerical analysis, confirming the finite element model to be accurate past the linear-elastic range. Experimentally tested reinforced beams usually failed in tensile zone after compressive plasticization of top lamination, which was also simulated in the numerical model. The results proved that the load carrying capacity, stiffness and ductility of glulam beams were successfully increased by addition of CFRP plate at tension side of the section.

AB - Construction industry is constantly facing new demands towards fast construction and smallest possibly quantity of work at the construction site. These increasing demands, in the field of composite construction of buildings and bridges, resulted in development of different types of prefabricated composite decks during decades and group arrangement of different types of shear connectors. Positioning of shear connectors into envisaged openings of prefabricated composite decks contributes to smaller quantity of concrete needed to infill openings of prefabricated composite decks. Composite action between steel profile and concrete decks can be achieved using X‐HVB shear connectors with powder‐actuated fasteners. Anchorage mechanisms developed between steel profile and fasteners during installation process of powder‐actuated fasteners are resulting in composite action between steel and concrete. Relatively simple and fast installation process, without requirements for additional equipment and electrical power on the site is characteristic for this type of shear connectors. Experimental investigation of X‐HVB shear connectors in prefabricated composite decks through standard push‐out tests, according to EN 1994‐1‐1 is presented in this paper. Shear connectors are positioned at the envisaged openings of prefabricated composite decks at the minimal longitudinal and transversal distances, recommended by the manufacturer. Two different orientations of shear connectors, forward and backwards to shear force direction are experimentally investigated and presented in this paper. Experimentally obtained characteristic shear resistance are compared with recommendations given by manufacturer. Characteristic slip at failure obtained from experimental investigation is compared with requirements given in EN 1994‐1‐1 in order to determine if this type of shear connector is considered as ductile. Eight specimens in two series are experimentally investigated through standard push‐out test. Different characteristic shear resistance and different failure modes are obtained for forward and backward orientation of shear connectors. Experimentally obtained results from standard push‐out tests for different orientations of shear connectors are compared with results obtained from extensive numerical analysis performed in Abaqus.

AB - Timber beams can effectively be reinforced using externally bonded fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. This paper describes a nonlinear 3-dimensional finite element model which was developed in order to accurately simulate the bending behaviour of unreinforced and carbon FRP plate reinforced glulam beams. The model incorporates suitable constitutive relationship for each material and utilises anisotropic plasticity theory for timber in compression. Failure of beams was modelled based on the maximum stress criterion. The results of the finite element analysis showed a good agreement with experimental findings for load-deflection behaviour, stiffness, ultimate load carrying capacity and strain profile distribution of unreinforced and reinforced beams. The proposed model can be used to examine the effect of different geometries or materials on the mechanical performance of reinforced system.

AB - When applying high strength bolts in friction connections, a load-bearing capacity depends on pretension force in the bolts as well as on friction coefficient found on friction surfaces. It is important to get the reliable value of the pretension force, so friction connections often undergo experimental research. In order to use strain gauges, which are inserted into the bolt shank, bolts need to be calibrated before we even use them in experimental research. Research that has been conducted shows a great difference between nominal and experimental strain in bolts, therefore FEA calibration of the bolts had to be carried out. Good results matching were obtained, hence a use of strain gauges was justified even for bolts without a shank.

AB - Prefabricated steel and concrete composite decks are an interesting option to improve competitiveness and sustainability of the composite structures. Longitudinal shear connection is usually established by grouped headed studs, but possible alternative solution is to use bolted shear connectors. Welded headed studs and bolts (grade 8.8) are experimentally examined in the push-out tests (four tests on each). The same arrangement and dimensions of shear connectors (16 mm diameter and 100 mm height above flange) are considered and their resistances and behaviour are compared. Experimental results showed that headed studs and bolted shear connectors have similar shear resistance, while headed studs are more ductile. FEA is performed by ABAQUS/Explicit solver with damage material models to get more insight into behaviour of the specimens. FEA shows rather good agreement with experimental results. Influence of the bolt to hole clearance on the behaviour of specimens with bolted shear connectors is analysed and discussed.

This paper presents recent studie of longitudinal shear connection at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Civil Engineering. Grouped welded headed studs and bolted shear connectors, suitable for prefabricated composite construction, has been examined in push-out tests. Totally 30 tests were conducted, and advanced Finite Element Analysis (FEA) were made using Abaqus/Explicit dynamic solver. Influence of the bolt-to-hole clearance in case of the composite beam with bolted shear connectors is examined using FEA, as well. Based on the experimental and numerical studies behaviour those two shear connectors are compared.

AB - When applying high strength bolts in friction connections, in such case a load–bearing capacity depends on a pretension force in the bolts as well as on a friction coefficient found on friction surfaces. It is important to get the reliable value of the pretension force, which is why friction connections often undergo experimental research. In order to use strain gauges, which are inserted into the bolt shank, bolts need to be calibrated before we even use them in experimental research. Research that has been conducted shows a great difference between nominal and experimental strain in bolts, therefore FEA calibration of the bolts had to be carried out. Good results matching were obtained; hence a use of strain gauges was justified even for bolts without a shank.

AB - The design rules in EN 1993-1-8 (the Eurocode) for beam-to-column joints in steel frames with endplate are based on the component method. Generally, three different zones of the joint are considered: tension, shear and compression. The component method given in Eurocode is comprehensive, but quite complicated for engineering practice. The possibility of development of simplified recommendations for the design of beam-to-column joints is investigated in this paper. The aim is to define the limiting, critical, values of the dimensions of some joint components in the tension zone, such that the major failure mode becomes failure of the bolts in tension. This would lead to more simple calculation of the bending moment resistance of the joint which is valuable for engineers in practice. Three often use joint layouts are defined and parameterized. For those joint layouts the critical thicknesses of the joint components in the tension zone are analytically derived. A short parametric study is conducted verifying the proposed critical thicknesses of the endplate, column and beam flanges and webs. A design flowchart is provided following the proposed simplified design procedure and the design example is given, as well.

AB - Prefabrication of concrete slabs reduces construction time for composite steel-concrete buildings and bridge decks. Casting of bolted shear connectors in prefabricated concrete slabs offers the higher level of prefabrication when compared to a technique with grouped headed studs in envisaged pockets of concrete slabs. Additionaly, bolted shear connectors offer some sustainability advantages, such as ability of the structure to be easily removed or replaced. However, bolted shear connectors are rarely used in composite structures due to the lack of detailed research and design rules. The aim of the research presented in this thesis is to promote the application of bolted shear connectors through detailed examination of their behaviour. Firstly, feasibility of their application in the longitudinal shear connection of composite decks is examined considering requirements for application, technical aspects, cost effectiveness and environmental impacts. Bolted shear connectors with single embedded nut was found to be the most appropriate for practical application. A case study considering incomplete interaction on a 12 m span composite beam with bolted shear connectors and welded headed studs showed that deflections and stresses in steel are increased (10-20%) in case of bolted shear connectors due to initial slip in hole. This is acceptable, especialy in the case where propped construction and propper camber are used. Further, detailed examination of their behaviour is made through comparison to welded headed studs in push-out tests on M16 and M24 bolted shear connectors (grade 8.8). Basic shear connector properties are observed: shear resistance, stiffness and ductility. Bolted shear connectors achieved similar shear resistance, while stiffness and ductility are reduced when compared to the headed studs. Advanced FE models of push-out tests are built and calibrated with regards to the experimental results. Abaqus/Explicit dynamic solver and damage material models for steel and concrete were used with realistic bolt and nut geometry, allowing the beyond-state-of-the-art failure analysis of push-out tests...

AB - The construction of Railway Road Bridge across the Danube in Novi Sad is in progress. The bridge is designed for two railway tracks, two road lanes and two footpaths, with total width of 31,440 m. The distances of the piers are 27+178,5+220,5+48 m and total bridge length is 474 m. On the cetral two spans are steel tied arches with network hangers and composite decks. In the article is presented the rationality of the bridge structure – main bearing systems, hangers and deck structures – according to steel material quantities and total construction costs.
AB - Železničko-drumski most preko Dunava u Novom Sadu je u toku gradnje.

AB - Prefabrication of steel-concrete composite decks can improve their competitiveness and sustainability. This paper presents recent studies of longitudinal shear connection at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Civil Engineering. Grouped welded headed studs and bolted shear connectors, suitable for prefabricated composite construction, has been examined in push-out tests. Totally 30 tests were conducted, and advanced FEA were made using Abaqus/Explicit dynamic solver. Based on the experimental and numerical studies behaviour those two shear connectors are compared.

abstract = "Prefabrication of steel-concrete composite decks can improve their competitiveness and sustainability. Based on the experimental and numerical studies behaviour those two shear connectors are compared., Prefabrikacijom spregnutih konstrukcija od čelika i betona može se povećati njihova konkurentnost i održivost.
