Structural Model Calibration of Vierendeel Bridge Based on the Vibration Properties

AB  - In this study the Vierendeel bridge structural model is adopted as a complex structure case study scaled from a real structure located near Cacak city in Serbia. Experimental analysis is conducted under simulation of ambient vibration using shaker device for exciting the model. Frequency Domain Decomposition (FDD) technique is applied using ARTeMIS software extractor to extract the modal properties, natural frequencies and mode shapes. As a comparative study, Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition (EFDD) is used to verify the extracted results from FDD. A finite element model is created in ANSYS software to simulate the adopted model to estimate modal properties numerically. Calibration process is implemented to converge the numerically estimated with the experimentally extracted modal properties. Two procedures written in MATLAB environment, for calibration and damage identification, are proposed using heuristics optimization, Simulated Annealing (SA) and Tabu Search (TS). Both of proposed calibration procedures exhibit high accuracy and efficiency due to good convergence between experimentally extracted and numerically updated values of natural frequencies extracted based on ambient vibration measurements.

AB  - The procedure for detecting the location and severity of damage of complex structural systems using their modal properties is an important tool of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of civil infrastructure. The herein presented research proposes procedures for damage detection based on two heuristic optimization methods: Simulated Annealing (SA) and Tabu Search (TS). In order to test the proposed procedures in different frequency ranges, experimental and numerical analyses were conducted on a steel grid bridge model in two configurations, according to the total mass of the structure, as well as for two simulated damage cases. The calibration of model parameters, according to experimentally extracted modal properties, is carried out using the proposed procedures. Numerical computations were conducted using ANSYS package and developed routines under MATLAB environment for model calibration and damage detection procedures. Experimental modal properties were extracted from ambient vibration measurements, as state-of- the art in SHM of complex structures, by the Frequency Domain Decomposition (FDD) technique, using ARTeMIS software. Both of the proposed procedures for model calibration and damage detection, with adopted objective functions including frequency and mode shape differences, exhibit accuracy, efficiency and robustness.

Testing heuristic optimisation methods for vibration-based detection of damage

AB  - Considerable efforts have been made in recent years for the development of non-destructive techniques for detection of structural damage based on changes of dynamic parameters of structures. The tests are made on a model of a simple beam with cantilevers. Two heuristic optimisation techniques are used in the proposed procedure for detecting the location and level of damage: taboo search and simulated annealing. The results show that both proposes procedures, with appropriate target functions and weight factors, are highly efficient for detecting the location and level of damage.

AB  - The paper presents overview of damage detection of structures using non destructive test methods and corresponding optimization procedures for detection, localization and severity of damage. Change of a stiffness, as a consequence of damage existence, reflects on changes of structural modal properties. Ambient vibration measurement, with corresponding identification of modal properties, is presented in detail because of its high importance for the whole damage detection process. The key benefit of the application of these methods is the ability to conduct tests without disrupting the function of structures. Also, there are presented the basic elements of detection and localization of damage using modern heuristic optimization methods.
AB  - Rad prikazuje pregled metoda oštećenja konstrukcija primenom nedestruktivnog testiranja, kao i odgovarajućih metoda optimizacije koje se primenjuju za lokalizaciju i karakterizaciju ozbiljnosti konstrukcijskog oštećenja. Promena krutosti, kao posledica oštećenja, odslikava se u promeni modalnih karakteristika konstrukcije, što se široko primenjuje u detekciji oštećenja. Merenje ambijentalnih vibracija, sa odgovarajućom identfikacijom modalnih karakteristika, je detaljno prikazana zbog velikog značaja u procesu detekcije oštećenja. Ključna pogodnost za primenu ovih metoda je mogućnost izvršenja testiranja bez remećenja funkcije konstrukcija. Takođe, prikazani su osnovni elementi detekcije i lokalizacije oštećenja primenom savremenih heurističkih metoda optimizacije.

AB  - In the paper, procedure of structural damage detection with application to a simple supported steel beam model, is presented. Simulated Annealing optimization technique is used to determine damaged element by numerical simulation of different scenarios of damage location and severity. The method of damage detection based on changing of dynamics properties of first five natural modes by formulating new objective function. The procedure is done using ANSYS Finite Element Analysis Software, with main optimization routine developed in MATLAB software. The results indicated that the performance of proposed procedure is robust.
AB  - U radu se prikazuje procedura detekcije oštećenja modela čelične slobodno oslonjene grede. Simulated Annealing metoda optimizacije primenjena je za određivanje elementa sa oštećenjem kao i nivoa oštećenja. Metoda detekcije oštećenja bazira se na promeni dinamičkih karakteristika konstrukcije uključivanjem karakteristika prvih pet modova za formirnje funkcije cilja. Procedura je sprovedena programa za proračun konstrukcija primenom konačnih elemenata ANSYS, sa glavnom optimizacionom rutinom razvijenom u MATLAB softveru. Dobijeni rezultati ukazuju na robusnost predloženog metoda.

AB  - The study presents the procedure of simulation of damage detection of simply supported steel beam using Tabu search optimization method. Numerical computation carried out in ANSYS finite element analysis software. Damage detection assums determination of location and amount of damage. The method uses detection of damage based on changing dynamic properties of structure. The main procedure, using optimization Tabu Search method, is developed in Matlab package. Damage was successfully detected after performing the procedure for both parameters, location and amount of damage.
AB  - U radu je prikazana procedura simulacije detekcije oštećenja slobodno oslonjene čelične grede uz primenu Tabu search metode optimizhacije. Numerički proračuni su sprovedeni u ANSYS softveru za analizu primenom metode konačnih elemenata. Detekcija oštaćenja uključila je loakalizaciju i kvantifikaciju oštećenja. Metoda se bazira na detekciji oštećenja na osnovu promene dinamičkih karakteristika konstrukcije. Glavna procedura, primenom Tabu Search meode optimizacije, razvijena je u Matlab okruženju. Oštećenje je moguće uspešno detektovati, po oba uključena parametra u analizu, tj. lokalitetu i nivou oštećenja.

Comparison of FDD and SSI modal identification methods from ambient vibration data case study

AB  - The paper presents performance of two different system identification methods applied on experimental ambient vibration recorded data. The first applied method is so-called Frequency Domain Decomposition – FDD, frequency domain based peak-picking method, while the second one is Stochastic Subspace Identification - SSI method, for estimation of state space systems. Emphases are on advantages and disadvantages of both applied methods. Also, application of ARTeMIS software is presented, as a very useful tool to facilitate extracting and displaying modal parameters.
