AB - This paper presents a methodology for estimation of hydrodynamic loads acting on the bottom and at the walls of a stilling basin of a stepped chute with converging walls, based on the pressure measurements at the selected points of a scale model. This is the first study of hydrodynamic loads for this type of structure, and the first one of the loads on the stilling basin walls in general. For selected flow discharges, step heights and hydraulic jump submergence ratio, the hydrodynamic pressures were measured at a significant number of points, providing the spatio-temporal distribution of relevant hydrodynamic loads. The most influential effect proved to be a convergence angle of the chute walls. Based on these measurements, appropriate regression expressions were proposed for predicting hydrodynamic loads. These expressions show good agreement with measurements, offering a reliable tool for the structural design of stepped spillway stilling basins.

AB - High-frequency oscillations and high surface aeration, induced by the strong turbulence, make water depth measurement for hydraulic jumps a persistently challenging task. The investigation of the hydraulic jump behaviour persists as an important research theme, especially with regards to the stilling basin design. Reliable knowledge of time-averaged and extreme values along a depth profile can help develop an adequate design of a stilling basin, improve safety and aid the understanding of the jump phenomenon. This paper presents an attempt of mitigating certain limitations of existing depth measurement methods by adopting a non-intrusive computer vision-based approach to measuring water depth profile of a hydraulic jump. The proposed method analyses video data in order to detect the boundary between the air-water mixture and the laboratory flume wall. This is achieved by coupling two computer vision methods: (1) analysis of the vertical image gradients, and (2) general-purpose edge detection using a deep neural network model. While the gradient analysis technique alone can provide adequate results, its performance can be significantly improved in combination with a neural network model which incorporates a "human-like" vision in the algorithm. The model coupling reduces the likelihood of false detections and improves the overall detection accuracy. The proposed method is tested in two experiments with different degrees of jump aeration. Results show that the coupled model can reliably and accurately capture the instantaneous depth profile along the jump, with low sensitivity to image noise and flow aeration. The coupled model presented fewer false detections than the gradient-based model, and offered consistent performance in regions of high, as well as low aeration. The proposed approach allows for automated detection of the free-surface interface and expands the potential of computer vision-based measurement methods in hydraulics.

AB - Hydraulic jumps exhibit a high degree of free-surface oscillations, triggered by intense turbulence and aeration.
These processes are difficult to model numerically and are frequently investigated on a scale model. However,
measuring the oscillatory characteristics of the hydraulic jump is not without issues, as the majority of available
methods are not intended for tracking instantaneous depth profile or free-surface interface (FSI). Some methods
are limited to a selected set of few predetermined points, and are sensitive to variations of secondary
characteristics of the hydraulic jump: point gauges are sensitive to aeration rate and rate of the free-surface
changes, electroconductive and optical probes require direct contact with the air-water mixture (disrupting the
free surface), while the ultrasonic distance measurement accuracy is severely impacted by the shape of the
free surface and aeration rate. To alleviate these issues, we propose the application of the non-intrusive method
based on image processing techniques to detect the instantaneous FSI. The first step is to record the freesurface region in a series of images, with a predefined constant time shift. Subsequently, the FSI along the
hydraulic jump is detected in every image. Presented method was used to reconstruct temporal evolution of the
depth profile from the FSI position in the recorded images. The obtained dominant FSI oscillation frequencies
along the hydraulic jump show good agreement with previous research. Results also show that the proposed
approach is more robust than previously available methods – minor sensitivity to camera shooting angle, rate
of the free-surface change, surface aeration variability, etc. Method is also very simple, with only a few tunable
parameters, and affordable, as the only required equipment is a camera. The preprocessing and calibration
steps needed to obtain reliable data for further processing are also described. Using method presented in this
paper, one can gain a better understanding of the characteristics of the hydraulic jump: instantaneous and timeaveraged FSI profile, as well as the frequency spectrum of FSI variations along the hydraulic jump. This can be
useful for the design of hydraulic structures, in particular – the hydraulic jump stilling basins.

AB - The performance of flat stilling basins can be inadequate for conditions when the tailwater depth is insufficient for hydraulic jump stabilization. In such cases, adverse-slope stilling basins can be used because they reduce the necessary tailwater depth. Sloped basins combined with smooth chutes have been the subject of many studies. However, limited research has been done for basins with stepped chutes, which are characterized by intensive flow aeration and high energy dissipation. Based on our scale-model experimental measurements of depth, velocity, and air concentration, we present a momentum-based method to characterize such hydraulic jump: the sequent depth ratio, the length of hydraulic jump roller, and energy dissipation effectiveness. The proposed method provides better agreement with experimental data when compared to existing methods and can be used for preliminary design.

AB - Stilling basins are the most commonly used energy dissipating structure for large dams, due to their high operating reliability under a wide range of inflow conditions. However, unsatisfactory tailwater conditions, primarily low tailwater level, can necessitate the use of additional structural solutions for the stabilization of the occurring hydraulic jump. A possible solution to this issue is the use of the adverse-sloped basins, which use the weight of the water in the jump for jump stabilization. Adverse-slope basin design had attracted the interest of engineers and researchers in the last decade as a simple method for the reduction of the required tailwater depth and basin length. To this date, a number of analytical and empirical methods for the estimation of features of such jumps are developed. However, the applicability of these methods is hindered by their diverse accuracy and/or complexity. Based on the experimental measurements on a stepped spillway model, a multilayer perceptron model (MLP) was trained for the estimation of jump characteristics. An accuracy and sensitivity analyses were also performed for each used method. It was demonstrated that machine learning techniques can potentially provide significantly better results than certain analytical and empirical methods. This allows a simpler, faster, yet accurate analysis of the occurring hydraulic conditions in the early stages of design.

AB - This paper analyzes the problems of flood control for the tailings-dams reservoirs, having in mind the significant rise of the flow and volume of observed flood waves, and increasingly stringent criteria for safety of high dams. Therefore, it is necessary to revise hydrological data and adopt the updated design criteria. The existing flood control facilities are investigated for the case of the tailings reservoir 'Rudnik', indicating a serious lack of capacity. The possibility of reconstruction of the existing structures, as well as various variants of new flood control facilities are considered. For evaluation of proposed variants, all the relevant aspects are taken into account, and a multi-criteria optimization is performed. The most important criteria are: the dam-safety during the entire period of exploitation, the costs, the available reservoir storage capacity, the capability of efficient phase construction, construction duration, the maintenance and operation conditions, and the value of the outflow discharge. As the most effective solutions have been proposed Variant 1 with the Channel spillway, and Variant 2 with Drop inlet spillway. Preference is given to Variant 1, primarily due to higher safety of the channel spillway.
Najvažniji kriterijumi su: sigurnost brane tokom celog toka ekspolatacije, investiciona vrednost radova, raspoloživa zapremina akumulacije, mogućnost efikasnog faznog izvođenja, trajanje radova, uslovi eksploatacije i održavanja i vrednost izlaznog protoka.

AB - The capability of the smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method to model supercritical flow in circular pipe bends is considered. The standard SPH method, which makes use of dynamic boundary particles (DBP), is supplemented with the original algorithm for the treatment of open boundaries. The method is assessed through a comparison with measured free-surface profiles in a pipe bend, and already proposed regression curves for estimation of the flow-type in a pipe bend. The sensitivity of the model to different parameters is also evaluated. It is shown that an adequate choice of the artificial viscosity coefficient and the initial particle spacing can lead to correct presentation of the flow-type in a bend. Due to easiness of its implementation, the SPH method can be efficiently used in the design of circular conduits with supercritical flow in a bend, such as tunnel spillways, and bottom outlets of dams, or storm sewers.

Several numerical models are compared with the procedure recommended by Zangar, and a new regression formula is proposed, that eliminates the observed discrepancies.

AB - The influence of converging stepped spillways on dimensions of the stilling basins for RCC dams was studied, based on the results of physical modeling, existing empirical expressions, and basic laws of fluid mechanics and hydraulics. The study includes analysis of parameters that affect the magnitude of a hydrodynamic force which is transferred into the stilling basin, and presents an original design methodology. A procedure for simplifying the optimization process for the entire spillway is proposed.

AB - The influence of converging stepped spillways on the dimensions of the stilling basins for RCC dams was examined, based on the results of physical modeling, existing empirical expressions, and basic laws of fluid mechanics and hydraulics. The study includes analysis of parameters that affect the magnitude of the hydrodynamic force which is transferred into the stilling basin, and presents an original design methodology. Analysis of the measured data and the methods for estimation of the sequent depth in the stilling basin are presented, with recommendations for design purposes and future studies.

AB - Wall deflection in supercritical flow induces standing waves which significantly influence the flow field close to the wall. This paper analyses the flow in the converging stepped spillway, using two scale-models with different step heights and convergence angles. Results show that the height and the width of the standing wave increase with the increase of the convergence angle. Air concentration decreases while the air-water mixture velocity and residual energy head increase in the vicinity of the converging wall and gradually attain the values for the undisturbed flow outside the standing wave. Compared to the prismatic chutes of equal upstream width, converging spillways are less efficient energy dissipators. Equations for predicting the maximum flow depth and the width-averaged residual energy are proposed.
