AB - From the point of view of Engineering Hydraulics, the spatial distribution of the aquatic vegetation in the natural streams and their floodplanes is random and unrelated to the streams' flow characteristics. Aquatic vegetation enhances flow resistance and influences mixing and transport processes. Numerical simulation of open channel flows with variable spatial distribution of aquatic vegetation requires a special treatment of the advective terms, because, besides the main variables, they also contain the spatialy variable porosity due to the presence of vegetation in the channel. In this paper flow in open channels with variable spatial distribution of vegetation is described using triple-averaged Navier-Stokes equations (Depth-Integrated Double-Averaged Navier-Stokes, DIDANS equations). They are solved numerically using the finite volume method. The equations with the advective terms explicitly accounting for the spatial variation of porosity are solved by using the flux difference splitting and Roe's method for approximation of the dependent variables at the boundaries between the computational cells. The modified Roe's method is tested on an idealised case of homogeneous DIDANS equations (horizontal bed and all flow resistance terms neglected). Numerical results for this simplified case are in excellent agreement with the analytical solution.

AB - Possibilities for the improvement of the methods for the estimation of rating curves in compound channels in the range of overbank flows have been analysing for thirty years now. It was shown that traditional methods, which divide a compound channel into segments with uniform rougness and use Manning’s equation overestimate the discharge by more than 60%. Empirical and physically based methods that have been developed and improved based on the data collected in laboratory channels under the steady uniform and non-uniform flows show good agreement with new measurements. This paper discusses the possibilities of applying the empirical Ackers method, and the physically based exchange discharge model for the estimation of the overbank rating curve at the river gauging station. The Prijedor gauging station on the Sana River is used in this paper as an example. The choice is based on the availability of the measurement data of high flows. The discharge data obtained by the two methods are compared to the data from the official rating curve for the gauging station.

AB - The subject of this study is an approximately 300 km long Middle Danube River reach that
spans from river kilometer (rkm) 1581 in Hungary to (rkm) 1255 in Serbia. The observed drying of
floodplains in Hungary some thirty years ago initiated the hydrological studies. However, problems
related to the navigation route maintenance of the Danube River and those in the water supply of
irrigation and drainage canal networks are now present in the whole free-flowing middle Danube
region. The study aims at investigating the correlation between the observed water level decrease
and recorded incision of the river bed at gauging stations and the indirect estimation of the long-term sediment transport along the sand-bed reach based on the surveillance cross-sections’ data
collected during regular monitoring surveys on the navigable Danube. It starts with hydrological
analyses of the 70-year-long time series of water level and discharge yearly data and continues
with morphological and correlation studies. It ends with the estimation of sediment transport. The
decreasing trend in water levels and the increasing trend in cross-sectional areas are persistent. There is a linear correlation between the two. Longitudinal changes in sediment transport indicate the existence of both degrading and aggrading riverbed reaches.

AB - Integrated approaches for managing natural resources are needed to meet the increasing demand for freshwater, energy and food, while, in parallel, mitigating and adapting to climate change, maintaining the integrity of ecosystems, and ensuring equitable access to resources. The Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus has been proposed as a cross-sectoral approach to understand, analyse, and manage the complex trade-offs and exploit synergies that arise among these resource sectors. Although not initially included as a component of the Nexus, the importance of ecosystems in supporting water, energy and food security is increasingly recognised by the Nexus community of researchers and practitioners. However, attempts to conceptually integrate Ecosystems into the Nexus have yet to converge into a common framework. A group of natural resources management researchers, system thinkers and ecosystem services experts from the European network COST Action CA20138 NEXUSNET have compiled and investigated the various approaches for integrating ecosystems in the WEF Nexus. By combining literature analysis with interdisciplinary workshops – one of which was held in a hybrid format (in person and online) at the University of Oulu, Finland, in September 2022 – we reveal a multiplicity of concepts utilised to represent, partially or fully, ecosystems in the Nexus, namely “natural environment”, “ecosystem services” and “biodiversity”. Disparity was also found in the role attributed to ecosystems in the Nexus framework, being it an underlying layer from which resources for Nexus sectors are extracted or the pillar of an expanded Nexus system – i.e., the WEF-Ecosystems Nexus. Through this collaborative effort, we present possible advantages and disadvantages of adopting differential WEF-Ecosystems Nexus approaches, highlighting their potential complementarity and integration to support future advancement of Nexus research. In the oral presentation, we will show our preliminary findings and encourage the exchange of ideas and feedback from the different scientific disciplines present at the CEMEPE Conference.

abstract = "Integrated approaches for managing natural resources are needed to meet the increasing demand for freshwater, energy and food, while, in parallel, mitigating and adapting to climate change, maintaining the integrity of ecosystems, and ensuring equitable access to resources.
AB - Fly ash (FА) is a by-product of solid fuels burning. In the introductory part of the paper, an overview of the origin, chemical composition and classification of fly ash is given. FА is a powdery, solid substance whose chemical composition consists of unburnt carbon, metal oxides (Si, Fe, Ca and Al) and other inorganic substances. Structural analysis of the raw and modified FА sample provides guidance towards potential FА change. In the second part of the paper, the areas of FА application are listed and described. The application of fly ash finds its place: in the synthesis of zeolites, in the ceramics industry, in the purification of wastewater and in sorption materials. Fly ash has potential applications for improving degraded soils. Fly ash is used as a substitute for raw material in the construction industry or as an additive in the cement industry. Due to favourable geomechanical and geotechnical characteristics, FA has also found application in the construction
of embankments. Fly ash is also used for Roller Compacted Concrete Dams. In Serbia, FA is used for containment embankments at ash impoundments of Thermal Power Plants.

AB - The benchmarking test of 2D and 3D numerical models on a compound channel flow with a rectangular-shaped main channel and a rectangular-shaped floodplain was carried out by the IAHR Working Group on Compound Channels. The selected test case is the flume experiment by Nezu and Tominaga (1991). Nine depth-averaged 2D models and four 3D models participated in the benchmark. In the 2D models, the depth-averaged streamwise velocity profiles in the lateral direction were compared. In the 3D models, velocity components in three directions as well as the distribution of the turbulence kinetic energy in a cross-section were compared. Through the comparison, the applicability and limitations of each model are highlighted and discussed with regard to the model characteristics.

AB - This work is a continuation of works by Goda et al. (2007) and Tamás et al. (2021) that were prompted by the drying of floodplains and problems in the water supply of irrigation and drainage canal networks in the whole middle Danube region. Previous works focused on hydrology and showed a constant lowering of water levels, which indicated the deepening of the riverbed. In the present study, the relationship between indicators of morphological changes and the decrease in low water levels at gauging stations (GS) is sought. At this stage, results confirm a continuous deepening of the riverbed. Despite smaller correlation coefficient values between low water levels (Zmin) and percentage increase in the cross-sectional areas in the sand bed part of the investigated reach, the linear decreasing trend in Zmin is evident.

AB - River bends are rarely simple, i.e., the bend radius is rarely constant throughout the bend length. They are rather irregular, i.e. their shape in the plan can be approximated with different bend radii. Since the bulk of previous research is concerned with simple bends, this paper aims at studying the effect of variable bend curvature on flow in an irregular bend with two bend radii. The effect is studied numerically, using a 3D finite volume based model SSIIM1, which solves Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with two-equation turbulence model closure. After successful calibration against experimental data from the simple 180° bend, the model is used to simulate flow in 180° variable curvature bends with the following combinations of relative curvature: mild-mild, mild-sharp and sharp-mild. Results have shown that: (1) The maximum spanwise water surface slope always develops at the entrance to the sharp bend, (2) the greatest slope develops in the sharp-mild layout, (3) the location where the maximum velocity path cuts the bend centerline does not change with the bend layout (simple or variable curvature), (4) the bend curvature sequence affects lateral velocity distributions of the streamwise velocity only in the middle of the bend, (5) the relative curvature sequence has an adverse effect on the size of two regions with maximum bed shear stress – one around the curvature inflection point and the other close to the bend exit.

AB - In this paper, the appropriateness of the exchange discharge method for the estimation of the stage-discharge curve and the reconstruction of the flood flow hydrograph in deep compound channels with narrow floodplains is discussed. This issue has been raised while estimating the stage-discharge curve at Ub gauging station based on the recorded stage hydrograph of the 2014 May flood and an attempt to reconstruct the corresponding flow hydrograph. The ratio of the depth
of the compound channel to its bottom width takes a high value of 1.46 when compared to the usual values, which are far less than one. The berm width with the walking path where the overbank flow spills, is 2.5 m. Additionally, the compound channel is characterised by
different surface covers which results in non-homogeneous roughness. Because of all these facts, the compound channel starts to behave as a single unit or a simple channel shortly after the initiation of the overbank flow, i.e. the momentum transfer between the main channel and the floodplain becomes negligible. Consequently, the discharge values calculated by the exchange discharge method differ by 10% from those calculated by the traditional, single-channel method.
Since the Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia had no flood data from the re-established Ub gauging station for the estimation of the overbank stage-discharge curve, there is a high level of uncertainty in the official stage-discharge curve. Thus, both the curve and the conclusions derived from this analysis should be reconsidered once there is enough data for proper estimation of the curve and proper conclusions about the appropriateness of the exchange discharge model.

AB - Landslide phenomenon in accumulated erodible bed sediments in a reservoir is one of the issues in hydraulic and sedimentation sciences that has received little attention. We intend to model two-dimensional changes of the water surface in a reservoir and of an erodible bed caused by a non-rigid landslide using a particle-based meshless approach. In this study, a fully explicit three-step algorithm is used. In this method, approximate numerical solution to the equations of the fluid dynamics is obtained by replacing the fluid with a set of particles. The governing equations for water flow and sand mass movement are solved for each particle. The movement of each particle, which is in interaction with other particles, is tracked. Experiments of a dam break on a dry bed, and submarine rigid and non-rigid landslides have been used to validate the method. Results indicate that the model was successfully calibrated against the measured data. Moreover, good agreement with the measured data demonstrates high capabilities of this method in simulating free-surface flows and wave-related phenomena. After the model validation, changes of erodible bed in a reservoir due to a non-rigid landslide were modelled. In this study, non-rigid landslide masses and sediment materials were modelled by non-Newtonian Carreau-Yasuda fluid, which is the novelty in the analysis of this type of natural hazard. Two possible scenarios were analyzed—one with the sliding material lighter, and the other with the sliding material heavier than the deposited sediments. The model was run until the landslide completely collapsed and its full impact was applied to the reservoir bed sediments. Additionally, we waited until the water level reached a steady state. These examples demonstrate that the model presented in this paper can be used as a reliable tool for modelling these phenomena.

AB - Deformable landslide body is modeled as a rheological material when SPH methods are used for numerical simulations. To increase accuracy, Carreau-Yasuda rheological model is chosen in this study. The model overcomes the weakness of the power-law model in predicting viscosity at zero and infinite shear strain rates. Also, a fully explicit three-step algorithm is proposed to solve governing equations. In the first step, intermediate velocities are computed in the presence of body forces. In the second step , they are used to compute divergence of stress tensor and to find intermediate particle positions. In the third step, pressure gradient in the momentum equation is merged with the continuity equation, and final particle velocity is calculated at the end of the time step. The algorithm is used in combination with Carreau-Yasuda model to simulate submarine non-rigid landslide. Comparison with experimental data indicates good agreement between calculated and observed water surface elevations with very low L2 relative error norm(εL2) and RMSE values. They are up to 70% lower than those from previous studies when Cross and Bingham rheological models were used with ISPH and WCSPH models, respectively. Moreover, shape and advancement of the non-rigid body made of sand are well captured.

AB - Hydrological regime plays a primary role in the sustainable management of floodplains, as floodplain ecosystem dynamics and balance are largely dependent on the dynamics of the flow regime of rivers. In the 1980’s a drying process of floodplains on the lower Danube reach in Hungary became evident while in the 2000s continuous unimpeded water supply of the main canal network in the Danube-Tisza-Danube water supply and drainage canal system became an alarming problem. In view of these problems, the present analysis aims at: 1) recognising hydrological indicators of the incision and/or aggradation of the riverbed, 2) estimating the extent of these processes and the rate of change of the riverbed in time based on these indicators, as well as 3) estimating possible consequent changes in the frequency of extremities. The study has shown that the lateral connectivity is at risk along the whole reach as the deepening of the riverbed still continues and according to some parameters (e.g. the gradient of decrease of mean water levels) is even increasing.

The study has shown that the lateral connectivity is at risk along the whole reach as the deepening of the riverbed still continues and according to some parameters (e.g. the gradient of decrease of mean water levels) is even increasing.",

AB - A stage-discharge curve for the compound channel is constructed at the Ub gauging station based on the recorded stage hydrograph during the 2014th-year flood event using the exchange discharge model. Consequently, the curve is used with the same model to reconstruct the corresponding flow hydrograph of the event. The exchange discharge model has been successfully used for the construction of stage-discharge curves in compound laboratory channels and in two river gauging stations. The calculated flow hydrograph is compared to the official one of the Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia. Results clearly indicate that the momentum transfer between the main channel and the floodplain becomes negligible shortly after the initiation of the overbank flow, i.e. that the compound channel starts to behave as a single unit or a simple channel.

AB - Hydrological regime plays a primary role in the sustainable management of floodplains, as floodplain ecosystem dynamics and balance are largely based on the dynamics of the flow regime of rivers. In the 1980’s a drying process of the floodplains on the lower Danube reach in Hungary became evident. The first statistical analyses were made for the Hungarian reach in 1992, because foresters noticed an alarming drying process of the floodplain forests. Analyses indicated the lowering of the riverbed of the Danube River. It is considered that the river training works were the main reason for the incision of the riverbed.

To the authors’ knowledge, no comprehensive analysis of the changes in the water regime for the whole alluvial reach of the middle Danube has been made to date. To fill this gap, authors analyse available time series of the water level and discharge data for the free-flowing alluvial reach of the Danube River, downstream of Budapest, Hungary to the confluence of the Tisa River, in Slankamen, Serbia. This analysis aims at: 1) recognising hydrological indicators of the incision and/or aggradation of the riverbed, 2) estimating the extent of the two processes and the rate
of change of the riverbed in time based on these indicators, as well as 3) estimating possible
consequent changes in the frequency of extremities (low flows and high flows).
According to the Water Framework Directive (WFD) the „good status” of the Danube River reach must be achieved. As the river and its floodplains constitute a complex ecological system, this can only be done through the harmonisation of the nature protection aspect reconstruction projects, WFD programmes of measures, flood management measures and navigation development.
If traditional river training activities continue, riverbed erosion will persist or increase in the future,
resulting in slow, but continuous drying of floodplains, that are very important nature conservation
areas. Consequently, the majority of floodplain reconstruction works’ effects might become negligible, while navigation problems will remain unsolved.
In the EU Floods Directive, natural flood management is an important issue, with a focus on increasing water retention capacities by e.g. the re-connection of rivers with their floodplains and restoration of wetlands which can store flood water and help “slow the flow” of flood waters. In this respect, lateral connectivity is one of the most essential issues, as it is for the species inhabiting floodplains and rivers. However, floodplain lateral connectivity is already severed by the decreasing frequency and extent of inundation. The studied hydrological regime is the most important determinant of floodplain habitats.

Ulazno - izlazna kapija, inspekcijsko mesto i skladišna dizalica mogu se posmatrati kao kanali sistema masovnog opsluživanja (SMO) koji redom opslužuju kontejnere. U analizi se primenjuje redna veza SMO. Cilj primene ovakve veze
AB - A serial system for handling export containers at a port terminal is considered in this paper. The steps that a container must follow in passing through the various port control points are: an entry gate where some paperwork is done, another control point such as weighting/inspection station, and a bridge-type yard crane that lifts containers onto a storage area. An entry gate, weighting/inspection station and a yard crane can be considered as service channels of queuing systems that operate in series.
The goal of implementation of serial queuing systems is to determine the intensity of service in an individual queuing system to reduce the waiting time of containers inside the port terminal, as well as the turnaround time of road freight vehicles that deliver export containers.
Under the specified assumptions related to probability distributions for service time, the simulation model of a serial system of queuing systems is developed. It has been shown that modeling of container service at port terminals can be carried out successfully by applying serial queuing systems.

AB - A methodology that was developed to provide rigorous mathematical description of spatially heterogeneous flows (multiphase flows, ground water flows or flows over rough beds) and related processes is presented in this paper. This is the double averaging methodology (DAM) in which Navier-Stokes equations are successively averaged in time and space. The DAM emergence and the development are traced back through the historical review. The review reveals the origins of the idea to combine time-averaging of turbulent flows and space-averaging of ground water or multiphase flows and to apply it to rough-bed open channel flows (gravel- bed rivers, vegetated and environmental flows). The review is followed by the DAM basics – definitions of superficial and intrinsic averages, spatial-averaging rules and averaging theorems and procedures, all necessary for the derivation of double-averaged Navier-Stokes (DANS) equations. The fact that the final form of DANS is independent of the averaging sequence (time-space or space-time) is illustrated on the example of nonviscous components of the total fluid stress as discussed in [23]. It is also accentuated that rigorously derived DANS contain all relevant forces that are added to the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations on the ad hoc basis, depending on the problem under consideration. Typical examples are drag and shear forces caused by roughness elements and form-induced stress. The application of DAM to rough-bed flows is presented on the example of flow over permeable bed composed of five layers of spheres packed in the cubic arrangemet. Streamwise velocity distributions in the streamwise oriented vertical plane is given to show velocity gradients near the top of spheres at the transition to the free flow layer. Results are presented for the profiles of double-averaged streamwise velocity, spatially-averaged shear Reynolds stress and spatially-averaged TKE, that both exhibit large gradients near the bed.

A methodology that was developed to provide rigorous mathematical description of spatially heterogeneous flows (multiphase flows, ground water flows or flows over rough beds) and related processes is presented in this paper. Results are presented for the profiles of double-averaged streamwise velocity, spatially-averaged shear Reynolds stress and spatially-averaged TKE, that both exhibit large gradients near the bed.",

AB - The independent subsections model (ISM) was developed for the steady uniform and non-uniform flow computations in compound channels with constant and variable channel widths. It was thoroughly tested against experimental data in different compound channel layouts. Since the existing set of equations is derived for the simple compound channel geometry, this paper aims at: 1) extending the model to arbitrary geometries, 2) adding the term that accounts for the influence of emergent rigid floodplain vegetation into momentum equations and 3) at validating the method against available floods data from one river gauging station. Comparison with the recorded data has shown that the optimal value for the model parameter ψt = 0.10 is greater than that obtained for the canal with smooth floodplains. Partial head losses due to vegetation are two orders of magnitude greater than the friction loss for H* > 0.25 when they are calculated with the formula for the volume drag force caused by an array of emergent rigid vegetation, proposed by Nepf,. The head loss due to a drag grows faster with the increase in floodplain submergence ratio on the floodplain with the constrained width. In the presence of vegetation on the floodplains, the head loss caused by mass exchange due to non-prismaticity of the compound channel does not depend on the floodplain width. This component of the head loss is balanced with the sum of head losses due to turbulence diffusion and vegetation drag.

U strateškom opredjeljenju, sektor voda u Republici Srpskoj mora neodložno, planski i ozbiljno pristupiti planiranju i razvoju integralnih vodoprivrednih sistema.

Zbog toga treba decidno iskazati potrebe i iste ostvariti razvojnim ciklusom uz pomoć EU.

AB - The exchange discharge model (EDM) is the model that was developed for the estimation of a stage-discharge curve and flood routing in compound channels. It was thoroughly tested against experimental data in different compound channel layouts. However, there is a little evidence on its application in rivers. This paper studies EDM performance in estimating stage-discharge curve at two gauging stations on the same river with different hydraulic conditions and compares its results with the traditional, divided channel method (DCM). The contribution of momentum fluxes due to turbulence diffusion and mass exchange to the total energy loss are analysed. It is found that EDM parameter values (ψt and ψg) depend on the hydraulic conditions at a gauging station. In the case of M1-type water surface profile, the ψt-value increases and the
effect of mass transfer is negligible. In the case of M2-type profile, the ψt-value decreases and the momentum flux due to mass transfer becomes dominant. Nonetheless, the lower ψt-value does not result in smaller additional loss due to turbulence diffusion, since the velocity difference between the main channel and the floodplain increases. Although the EDM and DCM provide approximately the same total discharge, EDM gives more realistic discharge distribution (main channel discharge is reduced and that on the floodplain is increased by 30-40% due to mass transfer caused by non-prismaticity of the channel).

AB - The hydraulic engineering community has been making continuous efforts to improve the
procedure for estimation of a stage discharge curve in a compound channel over the last twenty five years. The reason for this is the fact that tests in laboratory conditions have shown that the classical approach based on the divided channel method, which uses Manning’s equation, overestimates the discharge by more than 60% for high floodplain submergence ratios (> 0.3). Mathematical models that were developed and/or improved during this period were primarily tested using uniform or non-uniform flow data from laboratory flumes. This paper aims at applying one of these models in estimating the stage discharge curve under the flood conditions at one gauging station. More precisely, this will be the exchange discharge model, which is a 1D flow model. Apart from the momentum exchange due to turbulent diffusion, this model also considers the momentum exchange due to mass transfer between the main channel and floodplains, as rivers and streams have non-prismatic channels. The Slovac gauging station on the Kolubara River will be used for the case study, since there are floods observation data for this station available. The discharge values obtained for the highest recorded water levels
using the classical approach (divided channel method) and the exchange discharge method will be compared with the official records of the Republic hydrometeorological service of Serbia.

AB - Parameters of 1D confluence models are originally defined for concordant beds’ (CB’s) confluences. This paper aims at estimating these parameters for discordant beds’ confluences using numerical simulation results of 3D flow. A 3D finite-volume based model SSIIM2 that was successfully validated in CB’s confluences is applied in this study, too. Confluences with the low, moderate and maximal observed bed elevation discordance ratio values are analysed for three characteristic hydrological scenarios: dominance of the tributary flow, equal contributions of the combining flows and dominance of the main-river flow. It is shown that: 1) the mean flow angle δ approaches junction angle α with the increase in bed elevation discordance, especially when tributary flow dominates, 2) the value of Hager’s correction coefficient σ is not constant and 3) the contribution of the tributary flow to the 1D momentum equation is under predicted when either parameter δ or σ is used for its estimation.

On the effect of bed elevation discordance in confluences with unequal channel widths

AB - The paper studies the effect of bed elevation discordance on the hydrodynamics in fixed-bed open channel
confluences where the tributary channel is narrower than the main channel and where the flow is subcritical. The
study is inspired by two facts: 1) that the main river is wider than the tributary in majority of cases and 2) that the
bed elevation discordance is a usual morphological feature in alluvial river confluences. To this aim nine
confluence layouts with three channel width ratios BT / BMR = {1.00, 0.75, 0.50} and three extents of bed
elevation discordance ΔzT / hd = {0.10, 0.25, 0.50} are analysed under the three possible hydrological scenarios
defined by the discharge ratio values DR = QMR / Qtot ={0.250, 0.583, 0.750}. It is found that: 1) the tributary flow
acts as a jet when DR = 0.250 regardless of the BT / BMR and ΔzT / hd values, 2) the recirculation zone with several
vortices exists throughout the flow depth when DR = 0.250 and BT < BMR, 3) the primary vortex is shifted farther
downstream and the secondary one is inclined and attached to the boundary streamline, 4) the strong shear exists
both in the horizontal and vertical planes and 5) the shear layer is developed on each side of the inclined
recirculation zone.
