AB - Atmospheric aerosols in urban areas typically consist of particles of different
diameters, which can range in size from a few nanometers to a few micrometers and can have
a strong impact on human health [1,2]. This motivates the need to measure aerosol
concentration accurately, but it is often also necessary to combine results from several
instruments, with fundamentally different measurement principles. In this work, methods
based on the measurement of the electrical mobility of particles, for the range of diameters
from 10nm to 420nm, and the measurement of the equivalent optical diameter, for the range
of diameters from 300nm to 10um, were used. Combining the overlapping region in two size
distribution spectra can be used to infer equivalent optical properties of the ambient aerosol,
and examples of measured and combined spectra in several urban hot spots in Bay of Kotor
are analyzed in some detail. These examples will illustrate several aspects of urban aerosol
properties not readily available in a typical regulatory monitoring setting, such as distribution
of modes in number and mass concentration, as well as optical properties of measured aerosol.
As the main result, examples of combining particle size spectrums are presented. In the
process of combining the particle size spectra, it is possible to modify the distribution
obtained by optical measurements by searching for the optimal value of the refractive index
of the particles to obtain the best possible agreement with the size distribution obtained by
measuring the electrical mobility. An equivalent refractive index as well as the equivalent
shape factor of the ambient aerosol is obtained using Mie scattering theory as a theoretical
framework [3]. The measurement results from the mobile monitoring campaign in Bay of
Kotor in 2017 were used to elucidate the main principles of size spectrum combination, as
well as to showcase diversity of equivalent optical properties of urban aerosols.

AB - Abstract. We consider the system of N two-level atoms, of which N0 atoms are
unexcited and N1 are excited. This system of N two-level atoms, which forms a linear
quantum amplifier, interacts with a single-mode electromagnetic field. The problem of
amplification of the L-photon states using such an amplifier is studied. The evolution
of the electromagnetic field density matrix is described by the master equation for the
field under amplification. The dynamics of this process is such that it can be described
as the transformation of the scale of the phase space. The exact solution of the master
equation is expressed using the transformed Husimi function of the L-quantum state
of the harmonic oscillator. The properties of this function are studied and using it the
average photon number and its fluctuations in the amplified state are found.

AB - In the same chapter of his book Opera geometrica, Torricelli published1 two discoveries: 1) initial velocity of a jet from a container increases with the square root of the depth of the hole¸ 2) he draw the pattern of jets from three openings at the wall of a container filled with water to constant level H and determined the height of the hole with maximal range. In studying the pattern Torricelli used the mentioned law of initial velocities and Galileo’s law of free fall and projectile motion. The first Torricelli’s discovery is now well known in physics education under the name Torricelli’s law. But the pattern of jets from a container entered into physics literature along two ways, which we propose to name: “da Vinci’s way” and “Torricelli’s way”. Along “da Vinci’s way” educators and textbook authors (Ref. 2 and textbooks and articles cited by Biser3 and Atkin4) present incorrect drawings of jets in order to incorrectly “demonstrate”the correct Torricelli’s law. Along “Torricelli’s way” educators point out3-11 that the shape and range of a jet depend on the initial velocity as well as on the time of flight of a jet. Using algebra and calculus (instead of geometry, proportions and narrative used by Torricelli and Galileo) the shape of trajectories, their envelope, range and meeting of two jets at an arbitrary datum level, are determined by quadratic function and quadratic equation. Their detailed mathematical analysis is presented in this paper.
In describing how the use of water and air through time has developed our scientific understanding, and how to bring fluid mechanics to the general public, E. Guyon and M. Guyon12 observed: “Water fountains and jets are still being built and are favorite public attractions but, alas, are seldom connected to their scientific meaning, unlike the Torricelli fountain shown in Fig. 1.”

AB - In this work we explore the relationship between particulate matter (PM) and small ion (SI) concentration in a typical indoor elementary school environment. A range of important air quality parameters (radon, PM, SI, temperature, humidity) were measured in two elementary schools located in urban background and suburban area in Belgrade city, Serbia. We focus on an interplay between concentrations of radon, small ions (SI) and particulate matter (PM) and for this purpose, we utilize two approaches. The first approach is based on a balance equation which is used to derive approximate relation between concentration of small ions and particulate matter. The form of the obtained relation suggests physics based linear regression modelling. The second approach is more data driven and utilizes machine learning techniques, and in this approach, we develop a more complex statistical model. This paper attempts to put together these two methods into a practical statistical modelling approach that would be more useful than either approach alone. The artificial neural network model enabled prediction of small ion concentration based on radon and particulate matter measurements. Models achieved median absolute error of about 40 ions/cm3 and explained variance of about 0.7. This could potentially enable more simple measurement campaigns, where a smaller number of parameters would be measured, but still allowing for similar insights.

AB - In Serbia, one of the former republics of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, men and women have equal
access to higher education and professional employment. However, in practice, this equality is not always realized. In
this paper we describe the status of women in physics in Serbia, focusing on student gender ratios and on positions held.
The financial contributions of the Serbian government to the scientific sector are not sufficient. Many young physicists
enter the information technology sector, where they can earn higher salaries. In addition, the lack of career opportunities
motivates scientists to go abroad, so each year, more and more young people leave Serbia. Today, many young Serbian
physicists plan their departure during their studies and leave the country immediately after graduation. We present statis-
tical data for the last several years, reviewing the percentage of women who are pursuing physics as a subject of study or
a profession. We report gender ratios at various career stages. Teaching at the primary and high-school level is the main
professional activity for female physicists in Serbia. Even though a large percentage (about 50%) of Serbian physicists
are female, few women hold positions in which decisions about scientific and educational policy are made. When women
achieve leadership positions, their educational attainments often outstrip those required for the positions. Only six women
have a high-level management position.

AB - We consider a linear quantum amplifier consisting of NA two-level atoms and study the problem of
amplification of N-photon states. The N-photon states are associated with N-quantum states of the
harmonic oscillator. We show that the process of interaction of the electromagnetic field with atoms
can be associated with some transformation of the phase space and functions defined on this phase space.
We consider the Husimi functions QN (q, p) of N-quantum states of the harmonic oscillator,
which are defined on the phase space, investigate transformation of these functions, and find an explicit form of the density matrix of the amplified N-photon state.

AB - Recently, Panuski and Mungan presented the results of their study of light diffraction from a variable-width single slit by observing and measuring the diffraction pattern on an observation screen placed at a fixed distance. In this way, the authors were able to demonstrate to students the important near-field effects for single-slit diffraction, which most often have been neglected in introductory courses. In this paper, we show that there exists very good agreement between observed data and theoretical calculations by plotting intensity from single slits using a method with Fresnel-Kirchhoff integrals (Fig. 1). In addition to these comparisons, and with the evaluation of the Fresnel numbers, we argue that Panuski and Mungan demonstrated not only the near-field Fresnel, but also the far-field Fraunhofer regimes as well as the transition between the two. Furthermore, with a greater increase in the slit width, the transition to the geometric regime can be demonstrated (Fig. 2).

AB - In the diffraction pattern produced by a half-plane sharp edge when it obstructs the passage of a laser beam, two characteristic regions are noticeable. There is a central region, where the diffraction of laser light appears in the region of geometric shadow, while intensity oscillations are observed in the non-obstructed area. On both sides of the edge, there are also very long light traces along the normal to the edge of the obstacle. The theoretical explanation of this phenomenon is based on the Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction theory applied to the Gaussian beam propagation behind the obstacle. In this paper, we supplement this explanation by considering electromagnetic flow lines, which provide a more complete interpretation of the phenomenon in terms of electric and magnetic fields and flux lines; at the same time, that can be related to average photon paths.

AB - Innovative technologies often join their methodologies, instruments and techniques in solving various types of sophisticated problems in the area of architectural cultural heritage. Beside precise photogrammetric and laser scanning methods, the other less expensive and less time consuming methods for 3D scene/object reconstruction exist. The choice of tools/instruments and methodologies depends on large scale of factors (time or space limitations, finances, availability of instruments and graphic software, etc.). For particular project's purposes, 3D scene reconstruction, the chimney of an old brick factory in Belgrade with its surrounding buildings, was performed and presented as 3D digital model. The combination of 3D modeling graphic software tools,
measurement data recorded by laser based geodetic instrument and image data taken by digital camera were employed for architectural scene reconstruction. Since there was no available technical documentation, first part of the project included measurements of existing
objects. The task concerning precise dimensioning and spatial positioning, especially regarding the chimney was set. The scene (chimney and surrounding objects) was recorded by photo camera Canon Powershot A710 IS from the second floor of the Institute of Physics' building, while real geodetic measurements were obtained by geodetic instrument - total station Sokkia SET3130R3 positioned at the same view-point. Based on coordinates of some characteristic points on the chimney and the building, the scene was reconstructed and modeled in real dimensions in graphic software Auto CAD. Classical Descriptive geometry method for single image restitution was employed in addition for the purposes of correct spatial positioning (mutual relationships) of two recorded objects, and comparison of obtained results as well. This reconstruction project has its educational, cultural and documenting aims. Hence employed and gathered various disciplines and knowledge gave an adequate solution of practical engineering multidisciplinary task.

AB - We consider scale transformations (q, p) - gt (lambda q, lambda p) in phase space. They induce transformations of the Husimi functions H(q, p) defined in this space. We consider the Husimi functions for states that are arbitrary superpositions of n-particle states of a harmonic oscillator. We develop a method that allows finding so-called stretched states to which these superpositions transform under such a scale transformation. We study the properties of the stretched states and calculate their density matrices in explicit form. We establish that the density matrix structure can be described using negative binomial distributions. We find expressions for the energy and entropy of stretched states and calculate the means of the number-ofstates operator. We give the form of the Heisenberg and Robertson-Schrodinger uncertainty relations for stretched states.

AB - We consider the Husimi Q(q, p)-functions which are quantum quasiprobability distributions on the phase space. It is known that, under a scaling transform (q; p) - gt (aiiq; aiip), the Husimi function of any physical state is converted into a function which is also the Husimi function of some physical state. More precisely, it has been proved that, if Q(q, p) is the Husimi function, the function aii(2) Q(aiiq; aiip) is also the Husimi function. We call a state with the Husimi function aii(2) Q(aiiq; aiip) the stretched state and investigate the properties of the stretched Fock states. These states can be obtained as a result of applying the scaling transform to the Fock states of the harmonic oscillator. The harmonic-oscillator Fock states are pure states, but the stretched Fock states are mixed states. We find the density matrices of stretched Fock states in an explicit form. Their structure can be described with the help of negative binomial distributions. We present the graphs of distributions of negative binomial coefficients for different stretched Fock states and show the von Neumann entropy of the simplest stretched Fock state.
