Strength of composite flysch samples under uniaxial compression

AB  - This paper presents the results of uniaxial compression strength tests performed on samples composed of sandstone and siltstone discs. Samples are loaded until failure, with the aim of determining the dependency between uniaxial compressive strength and the volumetric percentage of siltstone. In order to precisely determine the moment and mechanism of failure of each composite sample, the process was recorded with a high-speed camera (120 fps). Uniaxial compressive strength decreases exponentially with an increase of siltstone volumetric participation. The critical ratio at which the uniaxial compressive strength of the composite sample equals the strength of the uniform siltstone sample was obtained at a siltstone percentage of 60%. The failure mechanism is highly dependent on the siltstone percentage, and occurs as shear or tensile failure, or combined shear-tensile failure in individual discs or throughout the entire composite sample. Comparison of the obtained exponential equation with empirical suggestions shows a good correspondence. It is suspected that the disagreement between the particular conclusions of this study and conclusions of other laboratory studies is due mainly to sample micro-heterogeneity.

Geotehnički uslovi sanacije Doma Narodne skupštine u Beogradu

AB  - Dom Narodne Skupštine je jedan od naših najznačajnijih spomenika kulture, na kome su uočena brojna oštećenja pojedinih elemenata konstrukcije i koji, po sadašnjim propisima, ne ispunjava uslove potrebne za dinamičku stabilnost objekta. Da bi se predložile mere sanacije objekta, bilo je neophodno izvođenje detaljnih geotehničkih istraživanja i utvrđivanje: širine i dubine trakastih temelja, veličine dozvoljenih opterećenja za postojeće temelje i upoređivanje sa stvarnim opterećenjima temelja, kao i veličine sleganja postojećih temelja za stvarna opterećenja od objekta i upoređivanje sa dozvoljenim sleganjima za datu vrstu temelja i temeljnog tla.  Sleganja su određena konvencionalnom metodom, kao i metodom konačnih elemenata i dobijeni su slični rezultati. U saradnji sa projektantima sanacije konstrukcije predložene su mere za trajno rešenje problema statičke i dinamičke stabilnosti.

Investigation of the behavior of the cable-stayed bridge under test load

AB  - A field load testing is an effective method for understanding the behavior and fundamental characteristics of cable-stayed bridges. This paper presents results of the behavior of the reconstructed cable-stayed bridge over river Danube in Novi Sad under test load. The bridge was built between 1976 and 1981 and in 1999 was heavily damaged by two Tomahawk missiles. In 2003 process of the reconstruction began and at the end of 2005 Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Belgrade was invited to test reconstructed bridge structure. The results of static load testing presented herein include displacements, rotations and strains of the 351 m long main span. Vibrations of the bridge were obtained by impact load produced by heavy truck passing the bridge and the time history response of vertical accelerations was recorded. The frequency content of the signals was determined using Fourier transformation and five flexural natural periods were extracted. The geological structure and engineering properties of the soil are also given. A finite element model of the bridge was made and a good agreement is achieved between the experimental and analytical results. These results have shown that the bridge is in the elastic state under the code-specified serviceability load, which indicates that the bridge has adequate load-carrying capacity and can be put safely into service.
