AB - In this paper, the possibility of applying Kirchhoff 's scalar approximation model for determining the backscattering coefficient from rough surfaces is investigated. Surfaces of dielectric and metallic materials, which have low roughness are considered. Based on the roughness parameters and electrical properties of these materials, the backscattering coefficient is modelled as a function of
the incident angle of electromagnetic radiation used in laser scanning. It was represented that the type of scattering and the range of backscattering radiation angles, in the case of seemingly smooth surfaces, vary significantly when the roughness parameters change.

AB - The residual stresses in rails are generated during the manufacturing process and have uneven distribution in rail cross section. The residual stress is a part of basic tensile stress in rail foot. For used rail, the residual stress value of 80 MPa is commonly used in the engineering calculations. On the other hand, the standard EN 13674 prescribes residual stress values up to 250 MPa and destructive method using electrical strain gauge for measurement of rail residual stress. Since destructive measurement methods are unsuitable for use in the track, the possible non-destructive in situ methods for measuring of residual stresses in the rails are discussed in this paper. The fundamentals of X-ray diffraction, ultrasonic, magnetic and electromagnetic methods are explained, as well as, their advantages and disadvantages.

AB - Cross-axial or transverse sensitivity of an accelerometer can be compensated by digital processing of the output signal. To perform this, it is necessary to determine coefficients that describe a sensor's response to excitation experimentally. Many procedures advised by standards and scientific papers use expensive equipment which is not available in every laboratory. Therefore, a simple method is proposed, namely a variation of the static tilt test, requiring no other measuring equipment than the sensor itself and a flat surface. Results vary depending on sensor surface and housing quality, but it has been shown that cross sensitivity effects can be reduced from several percent usually associated with commercial three-axial MEMS accelerometers down to 1% or less.

AB - A lossless compression scheme for the data acquired from three-axial microelectromechanical (MEMS) accelerometer is presented. Time delay estimation (TDE) was applied in conjunction with differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) as the preprocessor to entropy coding, to perform lossless compression on an embedded sensor device with limited memory and speed in real time. The essence of this method is to check if the signal exhibits certain level of periodicity, and code the differences between samples one signal period apart if it does. Limited choice of feasible mathematical operations was an important constraint implied by the architecture of the embedded sensor device. Algorithm execution time was improved by programming in assembler and avoiding unnecessary operations. Experiments have confirmed that considerable compression ratio gains can be achieved if the signal is quasiperiodic.

AB - An original wireless sensor network for vibration measurements was designed. Its primary purpose is modal analysis of vibrations of large structures. A number of experiments have been performed to evaluate the system, with special emphasis on the influence of different effects on simultaneity of data acquired from remote nodes, which is essential for modal analysis. One of the issues is that quartz crystal oscillators, which provide time reading on the devices, are optimized for use in the room temperature and exhibit significant frequency variations if operated outside the 20-30 degrees C range. Although much research was performed to optimize algorithms of synchronization in wireless networks, the subject of temperature fluctuations was not investigated and discussed in proportion to its significance. This paper describes methods used to evaluate data simultaneity and some algorithms suitable for its improvement in small to intermediate size ad-hoc wireless sensor networks exposed to varying temperatures often present in on-site civil engineering measurements.

AB - This paper describes testing of a wireless technique for measuring the actual sleeper vibrations and determination of their dynamic deflection based on the experimentally acquired acceleration data. Practical measurements of sleeper vibrations and calculation of displacements (deflections) along the track provide insight into the actual condition of layers below sleepers. The main goal was to develop the equipment for structural health monitoring as a basis for the track maintenance management.

abstract = "This paper describes testing of a wireless technique for measuring the actual sleeper vibrations and determination of their dynamic deflection based on the experimentally acquired acceleration data. Practical measurements of sleeper vibrations and calculation of displacements (deflections) along the track provide insight into the actual condition of layers below sleepers. The main goal was to develop the equipment for structural health monitoring as a basis for the track maintenance management.",

AB - Laboratory prototype of a wireless sensor network (WSN) for vibrations measurements on buildings was developed. The system is comprised of sensor devices (nodes) each having main processor board, accelerometer board, batteries, radio modem, and optionally a liquid crystal display. Personal computer (PC) acts as a base station of the system. Sensor devices (nodes) are powered by rechargeable batteries. Each node spends most of its time in a sleep mode (low power consumption). They are awakened and synchronized by beacon signal from the base station, and then they perform measurements simultaneously during the predefined time interval, compress the data on spot, and send it to the base station for modal or other analysis. Embedded RTOS is specifically developed for this purpose, and allows different modes of operation, with large number of parameters, by varying which the results can be optimized for different applications. Star network topology is used, since accurate time stamping is critical for modal analysis application which is primary objective of this WSN. A number of presented measures have been taken to ensure synchronicity of results such as processors calibration using high precision frequency counter and testing of deviation of radio beacon signal detection time. Accelerometers have been tested for cross-axial sensitivity. Radio modems range (probability of packet transfer) has been tested in urban environment (strong interference) and coding of transmitted signals was applied in order to improve transfer efficiency. .

AB - Development of communication technologies during last decade carried out possibility of application wireless sensor networks in many different areas. Recently frequently application of this technology in civil engineering is consequence of its economy and simplicity of installation, which provide possibility of monitoring of different parameters more flexible and possible at hard accessed locations. Paper deals with structure of wireless sensor network and in detail describe all components of those systems, as well as accompanying software and topology. Successful significant examples of applications in civil structure monitoring are presented, which illustrate possibility of application in this, very important, area of civil engineering. Accelerated infrastructural development actualized research efforts in this area.
Ubrzan infrastrukturni razvoj aktuelizuje inteziviranje istraživanja u ovoj oblasti.
