Experimental and numerical study of structural damping in a beam with bolted splice connection

AB  - The objective of this research is to develop a numerical model of one widely used bolted beam splice connection
that dissipates energy through structural damping. The reference experimental setup is carefully designed to
obtain the highly nonlinear dynamic response due to the suddenly released load. The fact that the monolithic
beam with welded connection has a linear response is utilized for the initial calibration of the numerical and
experimental models. Then, the numerical model of bolted beam splice connection is verified and adopted
through an iterative process. The influences of time and spatial integration, bolt load application, element
type, contact formulation, bulk viscosity, and mass scaling are discussed. A special attention is given to the
load application and load release functions. After the verification, the Abaqus/Explicit numerical model is
validated through the comparison with experimental data, where an appropriate friction coefficient is adopted.
It is demonstrated that the nonlinear structural damping occurs due to the complex micro slip behavior at the
contact interface.

AB  - Problems involving contact are of great importance in industry related to
mechanical and civil engineering, but also in biomechanics and other applications. The
contact interaction between surfaces in a bolted splice connection joint or area through
which tire interacts with the road is not known a priori, leading to a nonlinear boundary
value problem. Due to the rapid improvement of modern computer technology, today one
can apply the tools of computational mechanics to analyze contact problems with limited
accuracy, depending on design requirements. However, even now most of the standard
finite element software is not fully capable of solving contact problems, including friction,
using robust algorithms. The aim of this paper is to present some basic concepts of Contact
Mechanics. To illustrate the difficulties arising in computational contact mechanics,
Newton-Raphson scheme was used to solve simple 1D contact problem using penalty
method.

AB  - The challenge that will be posed to researchers for an even longer period is
the development of a predictable model for describing mechanical connections, their
variable stiffness and dissipative contact interaction processes. The main challenge to this
goal lies in the lack of understanding of how friction behaves on a small scale. Coulomb
friction, a large heuristic model is not predictable and has actually been proven to be
untrue in many modes. Expecting a universal law of friction for all types of materials and
therefore contact interactions is not very realistic. Instead, the goal of the international
research community is to develop a predictable model for a limited range of cases. So far,
the metal-metal contact is most often tested, respectively the contact interaction behaviour
of aluminium and steel elements of different quality. We also know that in the application
those two metals are most often found in making mechanical connections. The aim of this
paper is to make a brief overview of some of the previous tests and approaches to the study
of contact interaction in mechanical connections and the role of friction in energy
dissipation.

AB  - Progress and demands of all types of constructions imposed the need for the development of modern structures that are lightweight, but at the same time have high damping capacity and stiffness. The consequences of these requirements are increased dynamic problems related to vibrations and dissipative processes in structure connection joints. Structural joints are the main reason for the significant reduction of the level of energy dissipation and source of structural damping so therefore they have become a subject of interest to many researchers. The aim of this paper is to present some problems regarding research of structural damping and the importance of study Contact Mechanics to better understand the problem of structural damping.

Bimoment Contribution to Buckling of Thin-Walled Beams with Different Boundary Conditions

AB  - In this paper the influence of bimoment, induced by external axial loads, on the global buckling of thin-walled Z-section beams, subjected to different boundary conditions, is studied. Since bimoment varies along the beam axis, the problem of torsional and torsional-flexural buckling of thin-walled beams is defined by linear homogeneous differential equations of the second-order theory with a variable coefficient. To obtain the buckling load numerically, a finite-difference method is employed for discretizing the governing differential equations. To verify the validity and the accuracy of this study, numerical solutions are presented and compared with those calculated by simulation software.

AB  - Glass facade is traditionally considered as non structural element in buildings subjected to earthquake loading. Severe earthquake damage of windows glass panels initiated the research in this area in two directions. The first approach tends to minimize damage of glass panes as non structural elements. The second approach integrates glass panes in structural system in order to stabilize main bearing elements. In this paper the results of experimental investigation of composite panels subjected to in-plane cyclic loadings is presented. AB  - In the present paper, the methodology, suggested in FEMA guidelines for the evaluation of the seismic capacity of existing structures, is applied for the case of reinforced concrete frames with masonry infill. Calculations are carried out by the SAP2000. For the analysis, linear elements with appropriate plastic hinges are used for the modelling. Results from pushover analysis of three span bare frame, completely infilled frame and frame with infill only in the middle span. Also, numerical modelling of well known soft storey mechanism is shown. Results of numerical example confirm the expected inelastic behavior of frames with and without infill.

AB  - Seismic isolation is a modern method of protection of buildings in earthquake zones. The system belongs to the group of passive control systems, and in addition to the system of additional dampers, it is the most common method of structural control of buildings subjected to earthquake excitations. The application of seismic isolation is effective way in meeting modern seismic design principles on preventing damage of structural and non-structural elements in buildings. The paper presents the method of reduction of structural response using seismic base isolation. The concept of seismic isolation system based on elastomeric bearingsis analyzed in detail. In an illustrative example of a six story building, the implementation of seismic isolation with elastomeric bearings with lead core is studied. The obtained results clearly demonstrate the beneficial influence of seismic isolation on reduction of structural response due to seismic actions.
AB  - Sistem seizmičke izolacije je savremeni princip zaštite građevinskih objekata od dejstva zemljotresa. Reč je o grupi pasivnih kontrolnih sistema, koji se danas pored sistema dodatnih prigušivača, najčešće primenjuju za kontrolu ponašanja konstrukcija pri dejstvu zemljotresnog opterećenja. Primena seizmičke izolacije za određenu grupu konstrukcija je efikasna u ispunjavanju savremenih principa seizmičkog projektovanja u zaštiti kako konstruktivnih, tako i nekonstruktivnih elemenata objekta. U radu je izložen princip redukcije odgovora konstrukcije primenom seizmičke izolacije. Detaljno je obrađen koncept sistema seizmičke izolacije koji se zasnivaju naelastomernim ležištima. Na primeru izabrane konstrukcije, koja je modelirana i kao kruto oslonjena i kao izolovana elastomernim ležištima sa olovnim jezgrom, data je kvalitativna i kvantitativna ocena redukcije odgovora konstrukcije pri seizmičkom opterećenju.

AB  - Zidana ispuna u skeletnim konstrukcijama ima bitan uticaj na dinamičke karakteristike objekta, koje određuju odgovor konstrukcije pri dejstvu seiz-mičkog opterećenja. Projektno seizmičko opterećenje je intenziteta koji izaziva nelinearno ponašanje zidane ispune. U radu je prikazan postupak modeliranja nelinearnog ponašanja zidanih ispuna pri dejstvu zemljotresa primjenom programskog paketa SAP2000, usvajajući metodu ekvivalentnog štapa. Za definisanje nelinearnih karakteristika ekvivalentnog štapa usvojene su preporuke FEMA-e. Postupak modeliranja ilustrovan je na primjeru trospratnog AB rama sa zidanom ispunom od bloka, za slučaj cikličnog dinamičkog opterećenja.

AB  - The vertical extension of masonry buildings is a common need in built-up areas of the old city zones. The design of vertical extension is a special task for structural engineers, characterized by additional specifics in relation to a standard structural design. This paper presents a design methodology with all necessary steps for a successful design, starting from the initial state of the building to the program of geodetic monitoring. Each step is analyzed, its purpose and necessity is explained. The consequences, if any step is omitted in the design process, are highlighted. The paper also specifies the errors in the engineering practice, which in certain circumstances, can lead to unexpected consequences. The presented procedure represents a draft manual to professional engineers that should be part of design regulations.
AB  - Nadogradnja zidanih objekata je česta potreba u izgrađenim zonama starih delova gradova. Projektovanje nadogradnje je poseban zadatak za konstruktivnog inženjera, koje se odlikuje dodatnim specifičnostima u odnosu na standardna projektovanja konstrukcije. U radu je predstavljena metodologija projektovanja, koja definiše sve neophodne korake za uspešnu nadogradnju, od inicijalnog stanja objekta do programa geodetskog osmatranja. Svaki korak je analiziran, objašnjena njegova svrha i neophodnost, kao i naglašene posledice ako se izostavi u procesu projektovanja. Takođe, u radu su navedene i greške koje se često pojavljuju u inženjerskoj praksi i koje u određenim uslovima mogu dovesti do neželjenih posledica. Izložena procedura predstavlja nacrt stručnog uputstva za inženjere koje bi trebalo urediti stručnom regulativom.

AB  - Seismic design of masonry buildings is a very common task of civil engineers in their daily practice. It is very important for structures in seismic areas bearing in mind that the brick buildings typically have a much lower seismic resistance compared to modern reinforced concrete and steel structures. In this paper several types of masonry structural elements have been examined, which appear within the newly or already constructed masonry buildings. Seismic analysis of masonry structures has been analyzed in accordance with the provisions of European engineering regulations Eurocode 6 and Eurocode 8 relating to masonry. The paper presents the practical guidance and procedures for seismic analysis of masonry buildings.
AB  - Seizmički proračun zidanih zgrada je nezaobilazan zadatak građevinskih inženjera u svakodnevnoj praksi. On je veoma značajan za objekte u seizmičkim područjima imajući u vidu da zidane zgrade po pravilu imaju znatno manju seizmičku otpornost u odnosu na savremene armirano betonske i čelične objekte. U radu je razmatrano više tipova zidanih elemenata konstrukcije koji se pojavljuju u okviru novoprojektovanih ili već izgrađenih zidanih objekata. Seizmički proračun zidanih objekata analiziran je u skladu sa odredbama evropske inženjerske regulative Evrokod 6 i Evrokod 8, koji se odnosi na zidane konstrukcije. Data su praktična uputstva i procedure za seizmički proračun zidanih zgrada.

Investigation of the behavior of the cable-stayed bridge under test load

AB  - A field load testing is an effective method for understanding the behavior and fundamental characteristics of cable-stayed bridges. This paper presents results of the behavior of the reconstructed cable-stayed bridge over river Danube in Novi Sad under test load. The bridge was built between 1976 and 1981 and in 1999 was heavily damaged by two Tomahawk missiles. In 2003 process of the reconstruction began and at the end of 2005 Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Belgrade was invited to test reconstructed bridge structure. The results of static load testing presented herein include displacements, rotations and strains of the 351 m long main span. Vibrations of the bridge were obtained by impact load produced by heavy truck passing the bridge and the time history response of vertical accelerations was recorded. The frequency content of the signals was determined using Fourier transformation and five flexural natural periods were extracted. The geological structure and engineering properties of the soil are also given. A finite element model of the bridge was made and a good agreement is achieved between the experimental and analytical results. These results have shown that the bridge is in the elastic state under the code-specified serviceability load, which indicates that the bridge has adequate load-carrying capacity and can be put safely into service.

AB  - Zbog nedostatka stanova, zahvaljujući zakonskim rešenjima koja su to omogućavala, mnogi podstanari su svoje stambeno pitanje rešavali adaptacijom tavanskih prostora, ili nadziđivanjem postojećih zgrada. Nadziđivanja od jednog nivoanajčešće su rađena od drvenih konstrukcija sa minimalnom termičkom izolacijom, najčešće sa jednim slojem od 5 cm mineralne vune i opšivena limom. Slična je situacija i sa adaptiranim stambenim jedinicama u samim krovovima. Takva potkrovlja su prave energetske rupe i najveći potrošači energije. U radu se upoređuju dva tipična potkrovlja na jednoj istoj lokaciji, jedno uređeno savremeno u 2006.godini, sa zadovoljavajućom termičkom zaštitom zidova i svremenim PVC prozorima i drugo uređeno 80-tih godina sa velikim termičkim gubicima. Rezultati su takođe potvrđeni i snimcima dobijenim termovizijskom kamerom.

abstract = "Zbog nedostatka stanova, zahvaljujući zakonskim rešenjima koja su to omogućavala, mnogi podstanari su svoje stambeno pitanje rešavali adaptacijom tavanskih prostora, ili nadziđivanjem postojećih zgrada. Nadziđivanja od jednog nivoanajčešće su rađena od drvenih konstrukcija sa minimalnom termičkom izolacijom, najčešće sa jednim slojem od 5 cm mineralne vune i opšivena limom. Slična je situacija i sa adaptiranim stambenim jedinicama u samim krovovima. Takva potkrovlja su prave energetske rupe i najveći potrošači energije. AB  - In this paper the Influence of cross frames and wall thickness un the state of stress in box girders with deformable cross section is considered. It is shown how a relatively simple calculation model can be established starting from the general theory of thin-walled beams. .
AB  - U okviru ovog rada razmatran je jedan problem od značaja za proračun sandučastih nosača sa deformabilnim poprečnim prese kom. Analiziran je uticaj broja krutih dijafragmi upravnih na osu nosača na distorziju preseka. Pokazano je kako se polazeći od opštih pretpostavki teorije tanko-zidnih štapova može izvesti relativno jednostavan računski model koji omogućava analizu pomenutog problema.

Single-cell, simply supported box girders with and without side cantilevers properties concentrated and uniform loading are analysed. Different geometric properties like wall thickness, depth-to-width ratio and depth-to-span ratio are taken into consideration. The parametric study given at the end of the paper shows the influence of warping shear deformation and separate treatment of torsional and distortional action on the accuracy of the analysis.
