AB - In Serbia, one of the former republics of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, men and women have equal
access to higher education and professional employment. However, in practice, this equality is not always realized. In
this paper we describe the status of women in physics in Serbia, focusing on student gender ratios and on positions held.
The financial contributions of the Serbian government to the scientific sector are not sufficient. Many young physicists
enter the information technology sector, where they can earn higher salaries. In addition, the lack of career opportunities
motivates scientists to go abroad, so each year, more and more young people leave Serbia. Today, many young Serbian
physicists plan their departure during their studies and leave the country immediately after graduation. We present statis-
tical data for the last several years, reviewing the percentage of women who are pursuing physics as a subject of study or
a profession. We report gender ratios at various career stages. Teaching at the primary and high-school level is the main
professional activity for female physicists in Serbia. Even though a large percentage (about 50%) of Serbian physicists
are female, few women hold positions in which decisions about scientific and educational policy are made. When women
achieve leadership positions, their educational attainments often outstrip those required for the positions. Only six women
have a high-level management position.

AB - Recently, Panuski and Mungan presented the results of their study of light diffraction from a variable-width single slit by observing and measuring the diffraction pattern on an observation screen placed at a fixed distance. In this way, the authors were able to demonstrate to students the important near-field effects for single-slit diffraction, which most often have been neglected in introductory courses. In this paper, we show that there exists very good agreement between observed data and theoretical calculations by plotting intensity from single slits using a method with Fresnel-Kirchhoff integrals (Fig. 1). In addition to these comparisons, and with the evaluation of the Fresnel numbers, we argue that Panuski and Mungan demonstrated not only the near-field Fresnel, but also the far-field Fraunhofer regimes as well as the transition between the two. Furthermore, with a greater increase in the slit width, the transition to the geometric regime can be demonstrated (Fig. 2).

AB - In the diffraction pattern produced by a half-plane sharp edge when it obstructs the passage of a laser beam, two characteristic regions are noticeable. There is a central region, where the diffraction of laser light appears in the region of geometric shadow, while intensity oscillations are observed in the non-obstructed area. On both sides of the edge, there are also very long light traces along the normal to the edge of the obstacle. The theoretical explanation of this phenomenon is based on the Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction theory applied to the Gaussian beam propagation behind the obstacle. In this paper, we supplement this explanation by considering electromagnetic flow lines, which provide a more complete interpretation of the phenomenon in terms of electric and magnetic fields and flux lines; at the same time, that can be related to average photon paths.

AB - Innovative technologies often join their methodologies, instruments and techniques in solving various types of sophisticated problems in the area of architectural cultural heritage. Beside precise photogrammetric and laser scanning methods, the other less expensive and less time consuming methods for 3D scene/object reconstruction exist. The choice of tools/instruments and methodologies depends on large scale of factors (time or space limitations, finances, availability of instruments and graphic software, etc.). For particular project's purposes, 3D scene reconstruction, the chimney of an old brick factory in Belgrade with its surrounding buildings, was performed and presented as 3D digital model. The combination of 3D modeling graphic software tools,
measurement data recorded by laser based geodetic instrument and image data taken by digital camera were employed for architectural scene reconstruction. Since there was no available technical documentation, first part of the project included measurements of existing
objects. The task concerning precise dimensioning and spatial positioning, especially regarding the chimney was set. The scene (chimney and surrounding objects) was recorded by photo camera Canon Powershot A710 IS from the second floor of the Institute of Physics' building, while real geodetic measurements were obtained by geodetic instrument - total station Sokkia SET3130R3 positioned at the same view-point. Based on coordinates of some characteristic points on the chimney and the building, the scene was reconstructed and modeled in real dimensions in graphic software Auto CAD. Classical Descriptive geometry method for single image restitution was employed in addition for the purposes of correct spatial positioning (mutual relationships) of two recorded objects, and comparison of obtained results as well. This reconstruction project has its educational, cultural and documenting aims. Hence employed and gathered various disciplines and knowledge gave an adequate solution of practical engineering multidisciplinary task.

AB - Atomic three-grating Mach Zehnder interferometry constitutes an important tool to probe fundamental aspects the quantum theory. There is, however, a remarkable gap in the literature betweenthe oversimplified models and robust numerical simulations considered to describe the corresponding experiments. Consequently, the former usually lead to paradoxical scenarios, such as the wave-particle dual behavior of atoms, while the latter make difficult the data analysis in simple terms. Here these issues are tackled by means of a simple grating working model consisting of evenly-spaced Gaussian slits. As is shown, this model suffices to explore and explain such experiments both analytically and numerically, giving a good account of the full atomic journey inside the interferometer, and hence contributing to make less mystic the physics involved. More specifically, it provides a clear and unambiguous picture of the wavefront splitting that takes place inside the interferometer, illustrating how the momentum along each emerging diffraction order is well defined even though the wave function itself still displays a rather complex shape. To this end, the local transverse momentum is also introduced in this context as a reliable analytical tool. The splitting, apart from being a key issue to understand atomic Mach-Zehnder interferometry, also demonstrates at a fundamental level how wave and particle aspects are always present in the experiment, without incurring in any contradiction or interpretive paradox. On the other hand, at a practical level, the generality and versatility of the model and methodology presented, makes them suitable to attack analogous problems in a simple manner after a convenient tuning.

AB - Bohmian mechanics, a hydrodynamic formulation of quantum mechanics, relies on the concept of trajectory, which evolves in time in compliance with dynamical information conveyed by the wave function. Here, this appealing idea is considered to analyze both classical and quantum interference, thus providing an alternative and more intuitive framework to understand the time evolution of waves either in terms of the flow of energy (for instance, for mechanical waves, sound waves, and electromagnetic waves) or analogously the flow of probability (quantum waves). Furthermore, this procedure also supplies a more robust explanation of interference phenomena, which currently is only based on the superposition principle. That is, while this principle only describes how different waves combine and what effects these combinations may lead to, flow lines provide a more precise explanation on how the energy or probability propagates in space before, during, and after the combination of such waves, without dealing with them separately (i.e., the combination or superposition is taken as a whole). In this sense, concepts such as constructive and destructive interference, typically associated with the superposition principle, physically correspond to more or less dense swarms of (energy or probability) flow lines. A direct consequence of this description is that, when considering the distribution of electromagnetic energy flow lines behind two slits, each one covered by a differently oriented polarizer, it is naturally found that external observers' information on the slit crossed by single photons (understood as energy parcels) is totally irrelevant for the existence of interference fringes, in striking contrast to what is commonly stated and taught.

AB - We describe a rather simple optical experiment, which many students can easily carry out, but the theoretical explanation of which requires far-from-simple mathematical analysis and application of numerical methods. A thin vertical rod, partially immersed in a liquid-filled transparent cylindrical container, is moved from the centre toward the wall and observed laterally. As it moves, the part seen through the air and the part seen through the water start to separate, so that at a certain distance from the centre the lower part of the rod becomes invisible. We show that this happens at the distance for which the refracted ray that reaches the observer's eye is along the tangent to the surface of a cylinder. We derive the expression for this distance as a function of the index of refraction and ratio d/r, where d is the distance of the observer from the surface and r is the radius of the container. The locus of image positions is determined by evaluating the intersections of pairs of close rays from the rod which reach the observer's eye after refraction at the surface of the container.

AB - We present a trajectory-based interpretation of Young's experiment, the Arago-Fresnel laws and the Poisson-Arago spot. This approach is based on the equation of the trajectory associated with the quantum probability current density in the case of massive particles, and the Poynting vector for the electromagnetic field in the case of photons. Both the form and properties of the evaluated photon trajectories are in good agreement with the averaged trajectories of single photons observed recently in Young's experiment by Steinberg's group at the University of Toronto. In the case of the Arago-Fresnel laws for polarized light, the trajectory interpretation presented here differs from interpretations based on the concept of 'which-way' (or 'which-slit') information and quantum erasure. More specifically, the observer's information about the slit that the photons went through is not relevant to the existence of interference; what is relevant is the form of the electromagnetic energy density and its evolution, which will model consequently the distribution of trajectories and their topology. Finally, we also show that the distributions of end points of a large number of evaluated photon trajectories are in agreement with the distributions measured at the screen behind a circular disc, clearly giving rise to the Poisson-Arago spot.

AB - The coherence effects induced by external photons coupled to matter waves inside a Mach-Zehnder three-grating interferometer are analyzed. Alternatively to atom-photon entanglement scenarios, the model considered here only relies on the atomic wavefunction and the momentum shift induced in it by the photon scattering events. A functional dependence is thus found between the observables, namely the fringe visibility and the phase shift, and the transversal momentum transfer distribution. Good quantitative agreement is found when comparing the results obtained from our model with the experimental data.

AB - We present an analysis and interpretation of the experiment performed by Jacques et al (2007 Science 315 966), which represents a realization of Wheeler's delayed-choice Gedankenexperiment. Our analysis is based on the evolution of the photon state, since the photon enters into the Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with a removable beam splitter until it exits. Given the same photon state incident on the output beam splitter BS(output), the photon's state at the exit will be very different depending on whether BSoutput is on or off. Hence, the statistics of photon counts collected by the two detectors, positioned along orthogonal directions at the exit of the interferometer, will also be very different for each case. Therefore, it is not that the choice of inserting (on) or removing (off) a beam splitter leads to a delayed influence on the photon behavior before arriving there, but that such a choice influences the photon state at and after BSoutput, i.e. after it has exited the MZI. The random on/off choice at BSoutput has no delayed effect on the photon to behave as a wave or a corpuscle at the entrance and inside the interferometer, but influences the subsequent evolution of the photon state incident on BS(output).

AB - Bohmian mechanics allows to visualize and understand the quantum-mechanical behavior of massive particles in terms of trajectories. As shown by Bialynicki-Birula, Electromagnetism also admits a hydrodynamical formulation when the existence of a wave function for photons (properly defined) is assumed. This formulation thus provides an alternative interpretation of optical phenomena in terms of photon trajectories, whose flow yields a pictorial view of the evolution of the electromagnetic energy density in configuration space. This trajectory-based theoretical framework is considered here to study and analyze the outcome from Young-type diffraction experiments within the context of the Arago-Fresnel laws. More specifically, photon trajectories in the region behind the two slits are obtained in the case where the slits are illuminated by a polarized monochromatic plane wave. Expressions to determine electromagnetic energy flow lines and photon trajectories within this scenario are provided, as well as a procedure to compute them in the particular case of gratings totally transparent inside the slits and completely absorbing outside them. As is shown, the electromagnetic energy flow lines obtained allow to monitor at each point of space the behavior of the electromagnetic energy flow and, therefore, to evaluate the effects caused on it by the presence (right behind each slit) of polarizers with the same or different polarization axes. This leads to a trajectory-based picture of the Arago-Fresnel laws for the interference of polarized light.

AB - We study experimentally and theoretically the influence of light polarization on the interference patterns behind a diffracting grating. Different states of polarization and configurations are considered. The experiments are analyzed in terms of electromagnetic energy (EME) flow lines, which can be eventually identified with the paths followed by photons. This gives rise to a novel trajectory interpretation of the Arago-Fresnel laws for polarized light, which we compare with interpretations based on the concept of "which-way" (or "which-slit") information.

AB - Here, the influence of resonance photon-atom scattering on the atom interference pattern at the exit of a three-grating Mach-Zehnder interferometer is studied. It is assumed that the scattering process does not destroy the atomic wave function describing the state of the atom before the scattering process takes place, but only induces a certain shift and change of its phase. We find that the visibility of the interference strongly depends on the statistical distribution of transferred momenta to the atom during the photon-atom scattering event. This also explains the experimentally observed (Chapman et al 1995 Phys. Rev. Lett. 75 2783) dependence of the visibility on the ratio d(p)/lambda(i) = y'(12)(2 pi/kd lambda(i)), where y'(12) is the distance between the place where the scattering event occurs and the first grating, k is the wave number of the atomic centre-of-mass motion, d is the grating constant and lambda(i) is the photon wavelength. Furthermore, it is remarkable that photon-atom scattering events happen experimentally within the Fresnel region, i.e. the near-field region, associated with the first grating, which should be taken into account when drawing conclusions about the relevance of 'which-way' information for the interference visibility.

AB - In 1995, Chapman et al (1995 Phys. Rev. Lett. 75 2783) showed experimentally that the interference contrast in a three-grating atom interferometer does not vanish in the presence of scattering events with photons, as required by the complementarity principle. In this work, we present an analytical study of this experiment by determining the evolution of an atom's wave function along the three-grating Mach-Zehnder interferometer under the assumption that the atom is hit by a photon after passing through the first grating. The consideration of a transverse wave function in momentum representation is essential in this study. As is shown, the number of atoms transmitted through the third grating is given by a simple periodic function of the lateral shift along this grating, both in the absence and in the presence of photon scattering. Moreover, the relative contrast (laser on/laser off) is shown to be a simple analytical function of the ratio d(p)/lambda(i), where d(p) is the distance between atomic paths at the scattering locus and lambda(i) the scattered photon wavelength. We argue that this dependence, being in agreement with experimental results, can be considered as showing compatibility between the wave and corpuscle properties of atoms.

AB - Motivated by recent experiments where interference patterns behind a grating are obtained by accumulating single photon events, we provide here an electromagnetic energy flow-line description to explain the emergence of such patterns. We find and discuss an analogy between the equation describing these energy flow lines and the equation of Bohmian trajectories used to describe the motion of massive particles.

We find and discuss an analogy between the equation describing these energy flow lines and the equation of Bohmian trajectories used to describe the motion of massive particles.",

AB - The wide use of beam splitters in quantum interferometry, attosecond metrology, modern quantum information processing, foundations of quantum mechanics, has been based on coherence of beams emerging from a beam splitter. Here we further develop the approach in which a beam splitter is regarded as a transformer of an incident wave field (photon field or matter wave field) into a field which has narrow maxima at the points along and in close vicinity of two or more particular lines. This description was derived by considering a thin grating as a model of a beam splitter for photons, atoms and molecules. It is applied to answer some questions raised in the discussions on the interpretation of wave particle duality.

AB - The momentum distributions associated with both the wave function of a particle behind a grating and the corresponding Bohmian trajectories are investigated and compared. Near the grating, it is observed that the former does not depend on the distance from the grating, while the latter changes with this distance. However, as one moves further apart from the grating, in the far field, both distributions become identical.
