Data archiving and meta-data – saving the data for the future use

AB  - This chapter covers the main aspects of data archiving, as the last phase of data handling in the process of Urban Drainage Metrology. Data archiving is the process of preparing and storing the data for future use, usually not by the ones who acquired the data. Data archive (also known as data repository) can be defined as storage of selected subset of raw, processed, validated and resampled data, with descriptions and other metadata, linked to simulation results, if there are any. Data archive should be equipped with tools for search and data extraction and also procedures for data management, in order to maintain the database for long period of time. It is recommended, mostly for security reasons, to separate the archive database from working database. This chapter will provide the reader with relevant information about the most important issues related to data archive design, archiving process and data characteristics regarding archiving. Also, the importance of good and comprehensive metadata is underlined throughout the chapter. The management of data archive is evaluated with special focus on predicting future resources needed to keep the archive updated, secure, available, and complied to legal aspects. At the end, the set of recommendations for creating and maintaining data archive in the scope of urban drainage are given.

Assessment of corrosive characteristics of water according to indices of water aggression: Example of well field in Vojvodina

AB  - For the assessment of aggressiveness and corrosiveness of water many indices have been developed and some of them are presented in this paper. Although number of indices has been developed indexes none of them has been able to accurately quantify and predict corrosiveness of water or aggression. Indexes can be used as indicators of possible corrosiveness of water. Samples of raw water from four wells in Vojvodina, which are supposed to make a one-well field, have been analyzed in this paper. The assumption is that the water will be treated with filtration and disinfection before being introduced in to the system. The analysis was conducted using Langelier Index of Saturation, Ryznar Index, Puckorius Scaling Index, the Aggressiveness Index, Larson-Skold's Index and Modified Larson-Skold's Index. Most often, the development of corrosion can be seen through: deterioration of the pipes (measured by the loss in mass of pipes and oxygen consumption), the formation of deposits (measured by hydraulic loss or the buildup of deposits) and change in water quality in the system (measured by the concentration of iron, change of color and turbidity). The key water quality parameters that affect the corrosion processes are: pH, alkalinity and buffering capacity. Among the best known indices, which the aggression and corrosion properties of water express by CaCO3, are: Langelier Index of Saturation (LSI), Ryznar Index (RSI), Puckorius Scaling Index (PSI), and the Aggressiveness Index (AI). In addition to these indices, which observe the possibility of corrosion by CaCO3, other indices have been developed that take into account other parameters of water quality and their effect on corrosion of the pipe distribution network. Most common among the Larson-Skold's index (LR) and modified Larson-Skold's index (LRM). A sample from the well K3 has about the same values of LSI, RSI and PSI index as the samples from wells E1 and L2, but much worse values of LR and LRM index, which indicates that water from wells K3 has a greater potential to cause corrosion problems and the problems of water. It is recommended that water from wells K3 is not used for water supply. Assuming that the wells have the same capacity, an analysis of the indices of water that would have been a mixture of all four wells (mixture M1) and the water is a mixture of wells P2, E1 and L2 (mixture M2), has been conducted. Based on the analysis of a mixture of water M1, which includes water from all 4 wells, and mixtures M2, which uses water from wells P2, E1 and L2, negative impact water from wells K3 has been shown. According to all parameters, a mixture M1 showed a greater tendency to develop corrosion than mixture M2.
AB  - Za procenu agresivnosti i korozivnosti vode razvijeni su indeksi pokazatelja korozivnosti vode, od kojih su neki predstavljeni u ovom radu. Indeksi mogu da posluže kao indikatori korozivnosti vode. U ovom radu analizirani su uzorci sirove vode iz četiri bunara u Vojvodini za koje se pretpostavlja da čine jedno bunarsko polje. Pretpostavka je da će voda biti obrađena fitracijom i dezinfekcijom pre puštanja u mrežu. Analiza je rađena pomoću Langelierov indeksa zasićenja, Ryznarovog indeksa, Pukoriusovog indeksa za korozione slojeve, indeksa agresivnosti, Larson- Skold-ov indeksa i modifikovanog Larson-Skold-ov indeksa. Najčešće se razvoj korozije može sagledati kroz: propadanje cevi (meri se gubitak mase cevi i potrošnja kiseonika), formiranje naslaga (mere se hidraulički gubici ili stvaranje naslaga) i promenu kvaliteta vode u sistemu (meri se koncentracija gvožđa, određuje boja i mutnoća). Ključni parametri kvaliteta vode koji utiču na korozione procese su: pH vrednost, alkalitet i puferski kapacitet. Među najpoznatijim indeksima, koji agresivnost i korozione karakteristike vode izražavaju putem CaCO3, su: Langelierov indeks saturacije (LSI), Ryznarov indeks (RSI), Puckoriusov indeks skaliranja (PSI), indeks agresivnost (AI). Pored pomenutih indeksa, koji mogućnost korozije sagledavaju preko CaCO3, razvijeni su i drugi indeksi koji uzimaju u obzir i druge parametre kvaliteta vode i njihov uticaj na koroziju cevi distributivne mreže. Među najpozantijim su Larson-Skoldov indeks (LR) i modifikovani Larson-Skoldov indeks (LRM). Uzorak iz bunara K3 ima približno iste vrednosti LSI, RSI i PSI indeksa kao i uzorci iz bunara E1 i L2, dosta lošije vrednosti LR i LRM indeksa, ukazuju na to da voda iz bunara K3 ima veći potencijal da izaziva koroziju i probleme sa bojom vodom . Preporuka je da se voda iz bunara K3 ne koristi za vodosnabdevanje Pod pretpostavkom da bunari imaju jednaku izdašnost, urađena je analiza indeksa korozivnosti za vodu koja bi bila mešavina iz sva četiri bunara (mešavina M1) i voda koja je mešavina bunara P2, E1 i L2 (mešavina M2). Na osnovu analize mešavina vode M1, koja uključuje vodu iz sva 4 bunara, i mešavine M2, koja koristi vodu iz bunara P2, E1 i L2, pokazan je negativan uticaj vode iz bunara K3. Prema svim parametirma, mešavina M1 je pokazala veću tendenciju za razvoj korozije od mešavine M2.

AB  - In the process of making mathematical models, a common problem is lack or missing data that could be used for calibration and verification of the model. In that case, we have to somehow use available data to calculate the missing data. This article presents how it is possible to calculate runoff hydrographs from catchments of storm water sewer, by using measured water levels in basin of pumping station. Also, it is described on what you should bring your attention if you want to have results with small errors. .
AB  - Prilikom izrade matematičkih modela, često se susrećemo sa problemom nedostatka podataka koji se mogu iskoristiti za kalibraciju i verifikaciju modela. U tom slučaju je potrebno na neki način iskoristiti podatke koji se nalaze na raspolaganju i uz pomoć njih izračunati nedostajuće podatke. U ovom radu je objašnjeno kako je moguće dobiti hidrograme oticaja sa sliva kišne kanalizacije, preko izmerenih nivoa vode u bazenu crpilišta,, kao i na šta je potrebno obratiti pažnju kako bi se dobili rezultati sa prihvatljivom greškom. .

Flow measurement at the short structures in hydraulic complex conditions: HE 'Djerdap 2' case study

AB  - Hydraulic conditions at short structures in most cases prevents the existence of cross sections with parallel streamlines and fully developed turbulent flow profile. In such conditions the flow measurement is rather challenging. In spite of recent developments in flow measuring methods, there is no universal device that can be used in inappropriate hydraulic conditions with adequate accuracy. This paper gives the overview of the contemporary flow measuring methods with the focus on its usability in hydraulically difficult conditions. As a case study, the problem of flow measurements at the intake of the aggregates of Hydroelectric Power Plant (HE) 'Djerdap 2' is presented. Due to its position in Danube and leftovers of preconstruction works in river bed, there is a significant incoming angle of the water to the HE 'Djerdap' turbines. The streamlines angle is larger at the Serbian side then at the Rumanian side, resulting the worse efficiency of the Serbian turbines. To analyze the effect of the curved incoming stream to the turbine performance, the true flowrate has to be measured. Since the Kaplan's short turbines were used and no regular cross section where flow can be measured using standard methods exists, available measuring methods for velocity field measurement were analyzed in this paper. For selected method based on electromagnetic velocity measurement devices, the field check was performed and presented. The paper concludes with the assessment of accuracy and total costs for selected flow measurement method.
AB  - Merenje protoka na objektima gde ne postoje uslovi za formiranje pravolinijskog razvijenog turbulentnog strujanja predstavlja poseban izazov. I pored značajnog napretka u razvoju merne tehnike, ne postoji univerzalna metoda kojom je moguće izmeriti protok sa u napred poznatom tačnošću. U ovom radu je napravljen presek trenutno raspoloživih metoda sa osvrtom na njihovu upotrebljivost u složenim uslovima kao što je slučaj prostornog rasporeda brzina. Kao primer, razmatran je problem merenja protoka na zahvatima agregata hidroelektrane HE 'Đerdap 2'. Zbog asimetričnog položaja elektrane u odnosu na maticu toka reke Dunava, kao i zbog toga što radovi na čišćenju dna uzvodno od brane nisu sprovedeni do kraja, voda na turbine dotiče pod izvesnim uglom. Taj ugao je veći kod turbina bližih sredini brane (kod srpskih turbina) dok je kod turbina postavljenih uz levu obalu (rumunsku) zanemarljiv. Da bi se analizirao uticaj kosog dostrujavanja na rad turbina, neophodno je izmeriti protoke. Kako su kod primenjenih kratkih cevnih agregata loši hidraulički uslovi za kvalitetno merenje protoka standardnim metodama, u radu se analiziraju moguće varijante snimanja prostornog rasporeda brzina. Za slučaj korišćenja elektormagnetnih sondi, obavljena je i provera uticaj a smetnji od strane magnetnog polja generatora. Na kraju, procenjena je moguća tačnost merenja protoka kao i cena takvog sistema.

Managing energy costs in water distribution systems

AB  - The reduction of energy consumption is one of the first steps in fighting operational costs in Water Distribution Systems (WDS). Finding the optimal energy savings procedure and its implementation into a real-time control framework will always be a hot topic in the engineering of these systems. Several possible operational algorithms are presented for the WDS of the City of Uzice, Serbia, as an example. The Uzice WDS system is one of the most complex WDS in Serbia, with more than 30 tanks and pump stations and over 300 km of a distribution network area that spreads between 380 and 890 meters above sea level. Following Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system integration, a hydraulic WDS simulation model was developed using real-time measured and field-collected data. The model's output was used to update SCADA parameters. This procedure enabled significant energy savings by maximizing pump operational time during the low tariff (night) and by controlling the simultaneous work of major power consumers.

AB  - The number of automated measuring and reporting systems used in water distribution and sewer systems is dramatically increasing and, as a consequence, so is the volume of data acquired. Since real-time data is likely to contain a certain amount of anomalous values and data acquisition equipment is not perfect, it is essential to equip the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system with automatic procedures that can detect the related problems and assist the user in monitoring and managing the incoming data. A number of different anomaly detection techniques and methods exist and can be used with varying success. To improve the performance, these methods must be fine tuned according to crucial aspects of the process monitored and the contexts in which the data are classified. The aim of this paper is to explore if the data context classification and pre-processing techniques can be used to improve the anomaly detection methods, especially in fully automated systems. The methodology developed is tested on sets of real-life data, using different standard and experimental anomaly detection procedures including statistical, model-based and data-mining approaches. The results obtained clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the suggested anomaly detection methodology.

Validation of hydro-environmental data

AB  - The knowledge about hydraulic and hydrologic processes is based on the monitoring of environmental and technical systems where they take place. The result of monitoring are the data that can be transformed into some useful information and knowledge, but only if the level of data reliability and accuracy is known. A framework for data validation and check according some additional knowledge about observed processes is presented in this paper. The validation system is designed in a way that can be adjusted to different levels of data validation based on time when the validated data is needed (automatic, semi-automatic and manual) and on availability of additional data that can be used in validation process (technical characteristics of the monitoring system, experts knowledge about monitored process or existing relations between monitored variables). As a result of data validation, every data value is labeled with validation grade that shows how much the data value is representative for monitored hydraulic and hydrologic process.
AB  - Spoznaja o hidrotehničkim procesima potiče od osmatranja prirodnih i tehničkih sistema u kojima se odvijaju. Proizvod osmatranja su podaci koje je dalje moguće pretvoriti u korisne informacije i znanje, ali samo ako se zna koliko su ti podaci pouzdani i tačni. Cilj ovog rada je da predloži sistem po kome bi se mogla sprovesti validacija i provera prikupljenih podataka na osnovu prethodnog znanja o osmatranom hidrotehničkom procesu. Sistem je osmišljen tako da se može prilagoditi različitim nivoima validacije u pogledu vremena kada su potrebni validovani podaci (automatska, poluautomatska ili ručna validacija) kao i u pogledu raspoloživosti hidrotehničkih simulacionih modela i dodatnih informacija (tehničkih karakteristika sistema za osmatranje, ekspertskog znanja o osmatranom procesu ili relacije između merenih veličina). Rezultat validacije je ocena koliko je svaki podatak reprezentativan za osmatrani hidrotehnički proces.
