A Later Onset of the Rainy Season in California

AB  - Californian hydroclimate is strongly seasonal and prone to severe water shortages. Recent changes in climate trends have induced shifts in seasonality, thus exacerbating droughts, wildfires, and adverse water shortage effects on the environment and economy. Previous studies have examined the timing of the seasonal cycle shifts mainly as temperature driven earlier onset of the spring season. In this paper, we address quantitative changes in the onset, amounts, and termination of the precipitation season over the past 6 decades, as well as the large‐scale atmospheric circulation underpinning the seasonal cycle changes. We discover that the onset of the rainy season has been progressively delayed since the 1960s, and as a result the precipitation season has become shorter and sharper in California. The progressively later onset of the rainy season is shown to be related to the summer circulation pattern extending into autumn across the North Pacific, in particular, a delay in the strengthening of the Aleutian Low and later southward displacement of the North Pacific westerlies.

AB  - The aim of this research was to apply parametric modeling as appropriate geometric tool in landscape architecture design. Nature model used as inspiration in designing process was flower of the species bell flower (Campanula persicifolia L.), which could be found in Querco-Fagetea and Quercetalia pubescentis forest type. In profession of landscape architecture, this species can be used as a decorative because of its special form of the flower. The applied method of work included three main steps: field research and collection of plant material, generation of a geometric pattern using the geometric methods of Delaunay triangulation and the Voronoi
diagram through the 3D Studio Max software and modeling its‘ biomorphic form that can be combined in different ways giving completely new solutions. Biomorphic form of the flower of selected species was obtained by using different vertexes as parameters in design modeling process. Parametric modeling today is an integral part of every 3D modeling software. This type of modeling involves defining and manipulating specific parameters that defines a created model. Result of this parametric modeling method was conceptual urban design model - bench.
Some of new trends that designing urban spaces seeks is creating sustainable urban environment that strengthens the connection between people and nature in domains of aesthetics. This new and innovative urban element of public space could be the part of the new approach towards sustainable urban design.

AB  - Contemporary design solutions that move the boundaries of creativity include the use of digital graphics, in order to get innovative graphical interpretation which includes interventions in space using various element, materials and plants, which requires the use of a combination of different software packages .This paper analyzes the combination of the available graphical software for interpretation projects in the context of landscape architecture profession. Model 'Garden' was created in the 'SketchUp' software for the purpose of visual questionnaire and detailed research work in programs for visualization: 'Photoshop' , 'Lumion' and '3DMax'. Combining the two research methods: study graphic interpretation, 'learning by doing' method in software for digital graphic and research public opinion questionnaire ('Single stimulus' method) led to the results which give recommendations for the use of a combination of appropriate software packages.
AB  - Savremena dizajnerska rešenja koja pomeraju granice kreativnosti podrazumevaju upotrebu digitalne grafike, u svrhu dobiijanja inovativnih grafičkih interpretacija. Pejzažna arhitektura je transdisciplinarna struka, koja podrazumeva intervencije u prostoru upotrebom različitih elemenata, materijala i biljaka, što zahteva upotrebu i kombinaciju različitih softverskih paketa. Ovaj rad se bavi istraživanjem kombinacija dostupnih grafičkih softvera za interpretaciju projekata u okviru pejzažnoarhitektonske struke. Model 'Vrt' je izrađen u 'SketchUp' softveru za potrebe izrade vizuelnog upitnika kao i detaljnijeg istraživanja rada u programima za vizuelizaciju: 'Photoshop', 'Lumion' i '3DMax'. Garden cultural heritage spatial functionalities: The case of anamorphosis abscondita at Vaux-le-Vicomte

AB  - This paper analyzes the phenomenon of spatial functionalities for garden cultural heritage design and the relationships between the sizes of the sections and elements of the baroque garden of Vaux-leVicomte and the specific visual phenomenon, anamorphosis abscondita, that was used in the design of this garden. The interpretation of the optical illusions in the garden of Vaux-le-Vicomte was achieved by using geometrical analysis of the rules of linear perspective. The anamorphosis abscondita was examined through the viewpoints of the garden using the ground plan and longitudinal section of the garden, photographs and a virtual 3D model. The visual impression of the phenomenon anamorphosis abscondita formed in the eye of the observer, in relation to the reality of the garden, is confirmed through the geometrical analysis. Anamorphosis abscondita introduces a compulsory perceptual path to the observer of the garden. This pattern of deformation in certain parts of the garden creates in the viewer's eye a sense of infinity in space. The 3D scene of the garden is characterised by a large amount of spatial and visual information, which is located at different distances from the observer. The quality of visual information in such a space leads to a change of the object of interest. Perspectives and optical illusions influence the design of the garden at Vaux-le-Vicomte, and the terraces and axes of symmetry are important tools in its spatial organization. The axis of symmetry contributes to the clarity, depth and order of composition. The parameters that influence the phenomenon of anamorphosis (distortion): the height of the eye point and the distance both affect the visual illusion of the change in size (depth of scene).

Sensitivity Analysis of a Physically Based Distributed Model

AB  - The objective of this study is to perform a sensitivity analysis of the SHETRAN model on the example of the torrential Lukovska River catchment in Serbia. The sensitivity analysis of the model was performed for the following parameters: the vertical saturated hydraulic conductivity of the subsurface soil, the horizontal saturated hydraulic conductivity in the saturated zone, the Strickler roughness coefficients for overland flow and for streams, the available water content in the soil and the erodibility coefficients due to rain and due to overland flow. It can be concluded that the water and sediment discharge are very sensitive to the values of the vertical saturated hydraulic conductivity of the subsurface soil in the range of 0.001 to 0.1 m/day; to the values of the horizontal saturated hydraulic conductivity in the saturated zone in the range of 0.01 to 5 m/day and to the values of the Strickler's coefficients for overland flow and for rivers in the range of 0.1 to 100 m1/3s-1 and 15 to 40 m1/3s, respectively. The sediment concentrations in a flow and sediment discharge are very sensitive to the values of erodibility coefficient due to overland flow in the range of 0.5 to 1.5 mg/m2s and to the values of erodibility coefficient due to rain in the range between 0.1 and 40 J1. The obtained results could be used to simplify the parameter calibration procedure and to facilitate estimation of parameters in ungauged mountainous basins of similar characteristics.

AB  - The spatial analysis of annual and seasonal temperature trends in Serbia during the period 1961-2010 was carried out using mean monthly data from 64 meteorological stations. Change year detection was achieved using cumulative sum charts. The magnitude of trends was derived from the slopes of linear trends using the least square method. The same formalism of least square method was used to assess the statistical significance of the determined trends. Maps of temperature trends were generated by applying a spatial regression method to visualize the detected tendencies. The obtained results indicate a negative temperature trend for the period before the change year except for winter and a more pronounced positive trend after the change year. Besides being more pronounced, the vast majority of trends after the change year were also clearly statistically significant. Our estimate of the average temperature trend over Serbia is in agreement with those obtained at the global and European scale. Calculated global autocorrelation statistics (Moran's I) indicate an apparent random spatial pattern of temperature trends across the Serbia for both periods before and after the change year.

Influences of elevation on precipitations in Serbia

AB  - Analyses of ellevations influences on precipitations in Serbia are based on data from 26 pluviometrique stations, and 437 rain-gauges. Influences are studied for yearly averages, maximal daily data, and heavy rain durations from 10 minutes to 24 hours. For heavy rains elevation influences on main statistics (averages, coefficient of variations and skewness) and design rains (return period 100 years) are analysed. It is shown that range of elevations in Serbia is not wide, so other factors (as the stocastic rain characteristics) are predominant. It is sugested that avalilable metheorological radars data must be detailed studies and used in hydrological practice for the improvement of precipitations prediction and real-time floods forecasting in Serbia.
AB  - Ubrzani razvoj brzine procesuiranja i kapaciteta memorija računara omogućili su uvođenje hidroloških modela sa distribuiranim parametrima i proračune prostornih karakteristika u okviru GIS-orijentisanih modela. Pri modeliranju se često iz literature preuzimaju određene relacije bez prethodne provere na podacima sa konkretnog sliva. Padavine predstavljaju glavne ulaze hidroloških modela, pa su pouzdane analize prostornog i visinskog rasporeda kiša od presudnog uticaja na krajnje rezultate. Cilj ovog rada je da utvrdi da li je na prostoru Srbije opravdano vršiti korekcije padavina u funkciji promena nadmorske visine. Analize su obuhvatile podatke sa 26 glavnih meteoroloških stanica koje verno reprezentuju visinske odnose na prostoru čitave Srbije. U analize su uključeni podaci o prosečnim godišnjim padavinama, statistike (srednje vrednosti, koeficijenti varijacije i koeficijenti asimetrije) jakih kiša kratkih trajanja, kao i računske vrednosti jakih kiša povratnog perioda 100 godina (verovatnoće pojave 1%) za trajanja u rasponu od 10 minuta do 1 dan. Pored toga ispitana je i zavisnost prosečnih godišnjih padavina sa računskim jednodnevnim padavinama. Zaključeno je da globalno posmatrano na prostoru Srbije nema opravdanja da se uvode korekcije padavina sa nadmorskom visinom, a preporučeno da se kod modeliranja, korišćenjem maksimalno raspoloživih lokalnih podataka merenja, karakter veze ispita i utvrde relacije na svakom konkretnom slivu.

AB  - Solar radiation is a key driving force for many natural processes. At the Earth's surface solar radiation is the result of complex interactions between the atmosphere and Earth's surface. Our study highlights the development and evaluation of a data base of potential solar radiation that is based on a digital elevation model with a resolution of 90 m over Serbia. The main aim of this paper is to map solar radiation in Serbia using digital elevation model. This is so far the finest resolution being applied and presented using this model. The final results of the potential direct, diffuse and total solar radiation as well as duration of insolation databases of Serbia are portrayed as thematic maps that can be communicated and shared easily through the cartographic web map-based service.

Recent trends in daily rainfall extremes over Montenegro (1951-2010)

AB  - More intense rainfall may cause a range of negative impacts upon society and the environment. In this study we analysed trends in extreme ETCCDI (Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices) rainfall indices in Montenegro for the period between 1951 and 2010. Montenegro has been poorly studied in terms of rainfall extremes, yet it contains the wettest Mediterranean region known as Krivosije. Several indices of precipitation extremes were assessed including the number of dry days and rainfall totals in order to identify trends and possible changes. A spatial pattern relationship between extreme rainfall indices and the North Atlantic Oscillation has also been examined. The results generally suggest that the number of days with precipitation decreased while rainfall intensity increased, particularly in south-western parts of the country. A slight tendency towards intense rainfall events is suggested. The examined rainfall indices and North Atlantic Oscillation over Montenegro seemed to be directly linked to changes in one of the major large-scale circulation modes such as the NAO pattern that is particularly evident during the winter season.

Spatial pattern of recent rainfall trends in Serbia (1961-2009)

AB  - This paper examines a spatial pattern of annual, seasonal and monthly rainfall trends in Serbia. The study used data from 63 weather stations between the period of 1961-2009. The rainfall series was examined by applying the nonparametric method of the Mann-Kendall test and Sen's method to determine the significance and magnitude of the trends. Significant trends have not been detected for the whole country at an annual scale. Seasonal trends at the confidence level of 97.5 %, however, indicate a slight decrease in winter (5 stations out of 63) and spring (7 stations out of 63) precipitation and an increase in autumn precipitation (10 stations out of 63). Results for monthly rainfall trends also generally showed a nonsignificant trend with the exception of a negative trend in May (6 stations out of 63) and positive trend for October (9 stations out of 63). Calculated global autocorrelation statistics (Moran's I) indicate a random spatial pattern of rainfall trends on annual, seasonal and monthly timescales with exceptions for March, June and November. Overall, results suggest that only weak, mostly nonsignificant trends are present in Serbia in the period 1961-2009.

abstract = "This paper examines a spatial pattern of annual, seasonal and monthly rainfall trends in Serbia. The study used data from 63 weather stations between the period of 1961-2009. The rainfall series was examined by applying the nonparametric method of the Mann-Kendall test and Sen's method to determine the significance and magnitude of the trends. Significant trends have not been detected for the whole country at an annual scale. Seasonal trends at the confidence level of 97.5 %, however, indicate a slight decrease in winter (5 stations out of 63) and spring (7 stations out of 63) precipitation and an increase in autumn precipitation (10 stations out of 63). Results for monthly rainfall trends also generally showed a nonsignificant trend with the exception of a negative trend in May (6 stations out of 63) and positive trend for October (9 stations out of 63). Calculated global autocorrelation statistics (Moran's I) indicate a random spatial pattern of rainfall trends on annual, seasonal and monthly timescales with exceptions for March, June and November. Overall, results suggest that only weak, mostly nonsignificant trends are present in Serbia in the period 1961-2009.",

AB  - Land banks/funds are one of the most important instruments of rural development. Trends in growth and vitality of pedunculate oak forests in Srem from the aspect future Sava river water level change

AB  - The decline in vitality and dieback of oak forests is increasingly present Vojvodina. This is old challenge for forestry, which again became actual. The paper used dendrochronological methods with the intention to describe trends in growth of pedunculate oak forests in Srem and trends of the water level of the Sava River and air temperature, which are defined as critical to the vitality of these forests. Predicted were water levels of Sava River in the 21st century with overview of its implications on the oak forests growth. Samples were taken from three stands in Srem (Stara Vratična, Smogva and Blate). Flows of Sava river were taken according to five climate scenarios for the periods 2012-2040 and 2042-2070, and converted into the water levels. A trend of decrease in growth in all three stands in last 30 years was observed, together with decrease in water level and temperature rise. Predicted future water levels of the Sava River were in general lower than those in the period 1951-1981, and higher than in the period 1982-2012. The differences between the various scenarios, as well as the impossibility of adequate simulations of extreme events, leavs space for further considerations.
AB  - Opadanje vitalnosti i sušenje šuma je sve više prisutno u šumama hrasta lužnjaka u Vojvodini. Stari izazov za šumarstvo koji ponovo postaje aktuelan. U radu su korišćene dendrohronološke metode sa namerom da se prikažu trendovi prirasta hrasta lužnjaka u Sremu i trendovi vodostaja reke Save i temperature koji su definisani kao kritični za vitalnost ovih šuma. Izvršeno je predviđanje vodostaja Save u 21. veku i dat osvrt na njen uticaj na šume lužnjaka. Uzorci su uzeti iz tri sastojine u Sremu (Stara Vratična, Smogva i Blate). Razmatrano je pet klimatskih scenarija budućih protoka reke Save za period 2012-2040 i 2042-2070, koji su preračunati u vodostaje. Uočen je trend smanjenje prirasta u sve tri istraživane sastojine u proteklih 30 godina, kao i trend smanjenja vodostaja i porasta temperature. Projekcije budućih vodostaja reke Save su u većini slučajeva bile niže od onih u periodu 1951-1981, a više od onih u period 1982-2012. Razlike između različitih scenarija, kao i nemogućnost verodostojne simulacije ekstremnih voda, ostavlja prostora za dalja razmatranja.

GIS Based Estimation of Sediment Discharge and Areas of Soil Erosion and Deposition for the Torrential Lukovska River Catchment in Serbia

AB  - In the present study the SHETRAN river basin modelling system was used in conjunction with Geographic Information System (GIS) to estimate potential erosion and deposition rates within the catchment and the concentrations of sediment in a flow at the catchment outlet on the example of the 114.31 km(2) mountainous torrential Lukovska River catchment in Serbia. The streams in the Lukovska River catchment are short, steep and often produce hazardous torrential floods as a consequence of strong rainfall of short duration. The soil erosion and sediment discharge were analysed in view of the catchment response to physical characteristics of the catchment. Considering that the most of total annual sediment discharge in watersheds of torrential character is achieved during storm events, the SHETRAN modelling system was calibrated on the example of a storm event in 1986 and validated for three other storm events in 1974, 1976 and 1979. The simulated results of discharges and sediment concentrations at the catchment outlet for both calibration and validation events were compared with the observed data and found to be reasonable. The changes of erosion and deposition rates within the catchment and in the course of time were estimated for the calibration event in 1986. The simulated erosion rates were within the range of 1 to 10.5 t/ha and corresponded to the observed rates of erosion in Europe during extreme rain events. The presented methodology is useful in identifying the erosion vulnerable regions in a catchment where erosion control measures should be implemented.

Geodata management by developing of national data infrastructure in the republic of Serbia

AB  - Sharing of spatial information between the state establishments and private sector, based on standards for technical infrastructure of spatial data and services, is the strategic objective of the Mid-Term Program of Works of the Republic of Serbia, covering the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) Instigation and the maintenance for the period from 2011 to 2015. With the objective to achieve the goals set, the research was performed, with the results published in the present paper. The paper shows the status in the Spatial Data Infrastructure instigation; with the evaluation of development level achieved and recommendations for the future INSPIRE Directive implementation in Serbia. Geodata status analysis was performed over the sample of 78 local government organisations, state administration bodies, public enterprises and educational institutions. Overview was given for use, the types and availability conditions for spatial data. The issues of NSDI concept implementation were particularly noted, referring to the pricing policy for spatial data use, for the legislation and issues in spatial data coordination in the Republic of Serbia.

Flood frequency analysis at gauged sites: Need for a change in approach

AB  - In most developed countries, practices and research results are translated into standards or guidelines for flood flow assessment, usually with the compulsory application in the design and exploitation of hydraulic structures and systems. This paper briefly presents the draft guidelines for flood flow statistical analysis in gauged basins based on methods of statistical hydrology, intended for practitioners in Serbia. It explains the motivation for composing national guidelines and gives insight into contemporary trends in flood flow assessment in a few selected countries. The content of the draft guidelines is shown, as well as the main conclusions of the expanded research in terms of the proposed methodology for detection and handling of exceptional values. The proposed recommendations for modernization of existing, common engineering practices are highlighted. The paper presents the guidelines at the end of the first from three planned research phases, with the primary aim to encourage public debate which, in pair with the professional review, would lead to the adoption of the guidelines.
AB  - U većini razvijenih zemalja, iskustva iz prakse i rezultati istraživanja, pretočeni su u standarde ili preporuke za proračun velikih voda, najčešće sa obaveznom primenom u projektovanju ili eksploataciji hidrotehničkih objekata i sistema. U ovom radu ukratko je prikazan nacrt preporuka za proračun velikih voda na izučenim slivovima metodama statističke hidrologije, koji je namenjen domaćoj stručnoj javnosti. Objašnjena je motivacija za izradu preporuka u Srbiji i dat je uvid u savremene tendencije u standardizaciji proračuna velikih voda u nekoliko odabranih zemalja. Prikazan je sadržaj nacrta preporuka, a priloženi su i glavni zaključci proširenog istraživanja u pogledu predložene metodologije za otkrivanje i postupanje sa izuzetnim vrednostima. Sumirane su predložene konkretne preporuke za osavremenjavanje postojeće, uobičajene inženjerske prakse. U radu se stručnoj javnosti predstavlja predlog teksta preporuka nastao posle prve od tri predviđene faze istraživanja, sa prevashodnim ciljem da podstakne javnu raspravu koja bi, uz stručnu recenziju, dovela do usvajanja preporuka.

AB  - Komasacija je danas veoma značajna i predstavlja provereni instrument za razvojpoljoprivrede i seoskih područja.Glavni cilj komasacije oduvek je bio ukrupnjavanje poljoprivrednih poseda u što manjibroj bolje oblikovanih parcela, kako bi se poboljšala primarna poljoprivrednaproizvodnja i unapredio njen razvoj. Naime, razvoj poljoprivrede je jedan od suštinskihfaktora razvoja i unapređenja života na selu. U razvijenim zemljama se već dugo na selone gleda kao na poligon namenjen isključivo poljoprivrednoj proizvodnji. Zbog toga uzemljama Zapadne Evrope komasacija služi i kao sredstvo za sveobuhvatni razvoj sela.Novi koncept ruralnog razvoja tretira komasaciju kao složeni projekat koji, izmeđuostalog, ima za cilj i trajnu obnovu i unapređenje seoske zajednice. Uspešno izvršenakomasacija dovodi do opšteg unapređenja poljoprivrede, povećanja produktivnosti,efikasnosti i konkurentnosti kompletnog poljoprivrednog sektora. Ona takođe vodi iboljem planiranju i upravljanju zemljištem, otvara nova radna mesta u poljoprivrednimregionima, olakšava priliv privatnih i javnih investicija u ovoj oblasti, doprinosiunapređenju zaštite životne sredine i omogućava upravljanje prirodnim resursima naefikasan način.U mnogim državama Centralne i Istočne Evrope uslovi života na selu su se pogoršalitokom tranzicionog perioda. Velika nezaposlenost i loša infrastruktura dovele su do togada su sela postala manje atraktivna mesta za život. AB  - Land consolidation is still very important today and represents a proven instrument ofdevelopment of agriculture and rural regions.The main objective of land consolidation has always been the consolidation (reallocation)of the agricultural holdings into the fewest number of better designedparcels, in order to improve the primary agricultural production and promote itsdevelopment. Namely, the development of agriculture is one of the essential factors ofdevelopment and improvement of rural living. In the developed countries for quite sometime village has not been perceived as the training ground intended solely foragricultural production. For that reason in West European countries land consolidationalso serves as the means for comprehensive rural development. The new ruraldevelopment concept treats land consolidation as a complex project which, among otherthings, aims at continual renewal and promotion of the rural community. Successfullyimplemented land consolidation leads to overall upgrading of agriculture, increase inproductivity, efficiency and competitiveness of the entire agricultural sector. It alsoleads to a better planning and land management, creates new jobs in agriculturalregions, facilitating the flow of private and public investments into this field, contributesto promotion of the environment protection and enables efficient natural resourcesmanagement.The primary objective of this research is development of methodology for valuation ofland consolidation systems which would contribute in the most optimal way toestablishing the efficient system of land consolidation in the circumstances.The first difficulty encountered in development of the methodology was the lack of aclear definition of land consolidation as a system. In Chapter 3 for the first time theoptimal land consolidation system has been defined which best logically connects all theelements of the system. AB  - The appearence of geostatistics and geographical information systems has made it possible to analyze complex spatial patterns of meteorological elements over large areas in the applied climatology. The objective of this study is to use geostatistics to characterize the spatial structure and map the spatial variation of average values of precipitation for a 30-year period in Serbia. New, recently introduced, geostatistical algorithms facilitate utilization of auxiliary variables especially remote sensing data or freely available global datasets. The data from Advanced Spaceborn Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer global digital elevation model are incorporated as ancillary variables into spatial prediction of average annual precipitation using geostatistical method known as regression kriging. The R (2) value of 0.842 proves high performance result of the prediction of the proposed method.

AB  - This paper presents the application of indicator kriging as a geostatistical method for the purpose of creating maps of precipitation occurrence probabilities on the territory of the Republic of Serbia for distinctive months during 2009. The difference between this approach to mapping and standard isohyetal maps, which describe precipitation intensity, lies in the fact that this approach points to the potential of the occurrence of a certain amount of precipitation at a specific location for a given time period.
AB  - U radu je dat prikaz primene geostatističke metode indikatorskog kriginga za potrebe izrade karata verovatnoća pojave kišnih padavina na teritoriji Republike Srbije za karakteristične mesece u toku 2009. godine. Razlika između ovakvog pristupa kartiranju i standardnih izohijetnih karata koje opisuju intenzitet padavina je u tome što ovaj pristup ukazuje na potencijal pojave određene količine padavina na nekoj lokaciji za dati vremenski interval.

AB  - This paper summarizes findings on the flood flow estimation in ungauged catchments during the last decade in Serbia. The method used for synthetic unit hydrograph ise well known in hydrological practice as SCS method. Attention is paid to regional relations between characteristics of the basin and hydrograph elements, with emphasis to time of concentration and basin lag time. A medium basin with gauged runoff data is selected for application of studied methodology. Flood flows are also estimated by conventional statistical methods. Flood flow estimation results are compared and discussed for 20, 50 and 100 year return period. Calculation procedures are carried out for available rainfall data. Effective rainfall is calculated by SCS CN Method.
