AB - This paper presents a methodology for estimation of hydrodynamic loads acting on the bottom and at the walls of a stilling basin of a stepped chute with converging walls, based on the pressure measurements at the selected points of a scale model. This is the first study of hydrodynamic loads for this type of structure, and the first one of the loads on the stilling basin walls in general. For selected flow discharges, step heights and hydraulic jump submergence ratio, the hydrodynamic pressures were measured at a significant number of points, providing the spatio-temporal distribution of relevant hydrodynamic loads. The most influential effect proved to be a convergence angle of the chute walls. Based on these measurements, appropriate regression expressions were proposed for predicting hydrodynamic loads. These expressions show good agreement with measurements, offering a reliable tool for the structural design of stepped spillway stilling basins.

AB - Selection of the optimal method for the removal of heavy metals remains a scientific challenge in terms of efficiency, cost-effectiveness and preservation of environment. In this paper, the aim of the study was to remove the zinc ions (Zn2+) from a sample of real waste water from galvanizing plant. Method of electrocoagulation (EC), which is based on the separation of the solid phase, formed by the presence of dissolved ions from inserted electrode, has been tested and applied within this research. Based on the results obtained by electrocoagulation, it can be concluded that the method is efficient and can quickly remove zinc ions from solution. The optimal removal was achieved when concentration of Zn2+ ions was reduced from 46.9 to 1.89 mg/L, after 10 minutes of laboratory EC.

AB - A methodology that was developed to provide rigorous mathematical description of spatially heterogeneous flows (multiphase flows, ground water flows or flows over rough beds) and related processes is presented in this paper. This is the double averaging methodology (DAM) in which Navier-Stokes equations are successively averaged in time and space. The DAM emergence and the development are traced back through the historical review. The review reveals the origins of the idea to combine time-averaging of turbulent flows and space-averaging of ground water or multiphase flows and to apply it to rough-bed open channel flows (gravel- bed rivers, vegetated and environmental flows). The review is followed by the DAM basics – definitions of superficial and intrinsic averages, spatial-averaging rules and averaging theorems and procedures, all necessary for the derivation of double-averaged Navier-Stokes (DANS) equations. The fact that the final form of DANS is independent of the averaging sequence (time-space or space-time) is illustrated on the example of nonviscous components of the total fluid stress as discussed in [23]. It is also accentuated that rigorously derived DANS contain all relevant forces that are added to the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations on the ad hoc basis, depending on the problem under consideration. Typical examples are drag and shear forces caused by roughness elements and form-induced stress. The application of DAM to rough-bed flows is presented on the example of flow over permeable bed composed of five layers of spheres packed in the cubic arrangemet. Streamwise velocity distributions in the streamwise oriented vertical plane is given to show velocity gradients near the top of spheres at the transition to the free flow layer. Results are presented for the profiles of double-averaged streamwise velocity, spatially-averaged shear Reynolds stress and spatially-averaged TKE, that both exhibit large gradients near the bed.

AB - Image velocimetry has proven to be a promising technique for monitoring river flows using remotely operated platforms such as Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). However, the application of various image velocimetry algorithms has not been extensively assessed. Therefore, a sensitivity analysis has been conducted on five different image velocimetry algorithms including Large Scale Particle Image Velocimetry (LSPIV), Large-Scale Particle Tracking Velocimetry (LSPTV), Kanade–Lucas Tomasi Image Velocimetry (KLT-IV or KLT), Optical Tracking Velocimetry (OTV) and Surface Structure Image Velocimetry (SSIV), during low river flow conditions (average surface velocities of 0.12–0.14 m s−1, Q60) on the River Kolubara, Central Serbia. A DJI Phantom 4 Pro UAS was used to collect two 30-second videos of the surface flow. Artificial seeding material was distributed homogeneously across the rivers surface, to enhance the conditions for image velocimetry techniques. The sensitivity analysis was performed on comparable parameters between the different algorithms, including the particle identification area parameters (such as Interrogation Area (LSPIV, LSPTV and SSIV), Block Size (KLT-IV) and Trajectory Length (OTV)) and the feature extraction rate. Results highlighted that KLT and SSIV were sensitive to changing the feature extraction rate; however, changing the particle identification area did not affect the surface velocity results significantly. OTV and LSPTV, on the other hand, highlighted that changing the particle identification area presented higher variability in the results, while changing the feature extraction rate did not affect the surface velocity outputs. LSPIV proved to be sensitive to changing both the feature extraction rate and the particle identification area. This analysis has led to the conclusions that for surface velocities of approximately 0.12 m s−1 image velocimetry techniques can provide results comparable to traditional techniques such as ADCPs. However, LSPIV, LSPTV and OTV require additional effort for calibration and selecting the appropriate parameters when compared to KLT-IV and SSIV. Despite the varying levels of sensitivity of each algorithm to changing parameters, all configuration image velocimetry algorithms provided results that were within 0.05 m s−1 of the ADCP measurements, on average.

AB - High-frequency oscillations and high surface aeration, induced by the strong turbulence, make water depth measurement for hydraulic jumps a persistently challenging task. The investigation of the hydraulic jump behaviour persists as an important research theme, especially with regards to the stilling basin design. Reliable knowledge of time-averaged and extreme values along a depth profile can help develop an adequate design of a stilling basin, improve safety and aid the understanding of the jump phenomenon. This paper presents an attempt of mitigating certain limitations of existing depth measurement methods by adopting a non-intrusive computer vision-based approach to measuring water depth profile of a hydraulic jump. The proposed method analyses video data in order to detect the boundary between the air-water mixture and the laboratory flume wall. This is achieved by coupling two computer vision methods: (1) analysis of the vertical image gradients, and (2) general-purpose edge detection using a deep neural network model. While the gradient analysis technique alone can provide adequate results, its performance can be significantly improved in combination with a neural network model which incorporates a "human-like" vision in the algorithm. The model coupling reduces the likelihood of false detections and improves the overall detection accuracy. The proposed method is tested in two experiments with different degrees of jump aeration. Results show that the coupled model can reliably and accurately capture the instantaneous depth profile along the jump, with low sensitivity to image noise and flow aeration. The coupled model presented fewer false detections than the gradient-based model, and offered consistent performance in regions of high, as well as low aeration. The proposed approach allows for automated detection of the free-surface interface and expands the potential of computer vision-based measurement methods in hydraulics.

AB - In this research the object of the analysis was the improvement of drinking water treatment plant, while groundwater being a source of drinking water.
Improvements include the removal of magnesium and manganese. Improvements also mean choosing the proper water treatment technology that would meet the standards for drinking water quality. Technologies that are suitable for removal of these ions vary in many aspects, from technological challenges to cost analysis. After thorough analysis, the right choice, in this case, was two-stage nanofiltration (NF) which has a removal rate of more than 90%. The analysis also included detailed cost analysis.

AB - In this research the object of the analysis was the groundwater used for drinking which needs certain improvements. Improvements involve removal of magnesium and manganese. Improvements also mean the choice of proper water treatment technology which could meet the standards for drinking water quality. Technologies that are suitable for removal of these ions vary from classical to modern. Lime was not considered, ion exchange was an option, but membrane technologies were the ones that meet all the criteria. Since reverse osmosis (RO) is very expensive, and nanofiltration (NF) meets the required removal demands, meaning removal of divalent ions, it has been selected as the right choice for this case.

AB - The independent subsections model (ISM) was developed for the steady uniform and non-uniform flow computations in compound channels with constant and variable channel widths. It was thoroughly tested against experimental data in different compound channel layouts. Since the existing set of equations is derived for the simple compound channel geometry, this paper aims at: 1) extending the model to arbitrary geometries, 2) adding the term that accounts for the influence of emergent rigid floodplain vegetation into momentum equations and 3) at validating the method against available floods data from one river gauging station. Comparison with the recorded data has shown that the optimal value for the model parameter ψt = 0.10 is greater than that obtained for the canal with smooth floodplains. Partial head losses due to vegetation are two orders of magnitude greater than the friction loss for H* > 0.25 when they are calculated with the formula for the volume drag force caused by an array of emergent rigid vegetation, proposed by Nepf,. The head loss due to a drag grows faster with the increase in floodplain submergence ratio on the floodplain with the constrained width. In the presence of vegetation on the floodplains, the head loss caused by mass exchange due to non-prismaticity of the compound channel does not depend on the floodplain width. This component of the head loss is balanced with the sum of head losses due to turbulence diffusion and vegetation drag.

AB - Na području Republike Srpske i Bosne i Hercegovine integralni vodoprivredni sistemi su djelimično ili veoma slabo razvijeni.

U strateškom opredjeljenju, sektor voda u Republici Srpskoj mora neodložno, planski i ozbiljno pristupiti planiranju i razvoju integralnih vodoprivrednih sistema.

Zbog toga treba decidno iskazati potrebe i iste ostvariti razvojnim ciklusom uz pomoć EU.

U strateškom opredjeljenju, sektor voda u Republici Srpskoj mora neodložno, planski i ozbiljno pristupiti planiranju i razvoju integralnih vodoprivrednih sistema.

Zbog toga treba decidno iskazati potrebe i iste ostvariti razvojnim ciklusom uz pomoć EU.

AB - The exchange discharge model (EDM) is the model that was developed for the estimation of a stage-discharge curve and flood routing in compound channels. It was thoroughly tested against experimental data in different compound channel layouts. However, there is a little evidence on its application in rivers. This paper studies EDM performance in estimating stage-discharge curve at two gauging stations on the same river with different hydraulic conditions and compares its results with the traditional, divided channel method (DCM). The contribution of momentum fluxes due to turbulence diffusion and mass exchange to the total energy loss are analysed. It is found that EDM parameter values (ψt and ψg) depend on the hydraulic conditions at a gauging station. In the case of M1-type water surface profile, the ψt-value increases and the
effect of mass transfer is negligible. In the case of M2-type profile, the ψt-value decreases and the momentum flux due to mass transfer becomes dominant. Nonetheless, the lower ψt-value does not result in smaller additional loss due to turbulence diffusion, since the velocity difference between the main channel and the floodplain increases. Although the EDM and DCM provide approximately the same total discharge, EDM gives more realistic discharge distribution (main channel discharge is reduced and that on the floodplain is increased by 30-40% due to mass transfer caused by non-prismaticity of the channel).

AB - Hydraulic jumps exhibit a high degree of free-surface oscillations, triggered by intense turbulence and aeration.
These processes are difficult to model numerically and are frequently investigated on a scale model. However,
measuring the oscillatory characteristics of the hydraulic jump is not without issues, as the majority of available
methods are not intended for tracking instantaneous depth profile or free-surface interface (FSI). Some methods
are limited to a selected set of few predetermined points, and are sensitive to variations of secondary
characteristics of the hydraulic jump: point gauges are sensitive to aeration rate and rate of the free-surface
changes, electroconductive and optical probes require direct contact with the air-water mixture (disrupting the
free surface), while the ultrasonic distance measurement accuracy is severely impacted by the shape of the
free surface and aeration rate. To alleviate these issues, we propose the application of the non-intrusive method
based on image processing techniques to detect the instantaneous FSI. The first step is to record the freesurface region in a series of images, with a predefined constant time shift. Subsequently, the FSI along the
hydraulic jump is detected in every image. Presented method was used to reconstruct temporal evolution of the
depth profile from the FSI position in the recorded images. The obtained dominant FSI oscillation frequencies
along the hydraulic jump show good agreement with previous research. Results also show that the proposed
approach is more robust than previously available methods – minor sensitivity to camera shooting angle, rate
of the free-surface change, surface aeration variability, etc. Method is also very simple, with only a few tunable
parameters, and affordable, as the only required equipment is a camera. The preprocessing and calibration
steps needed to obtain reliable data for further processing are also described. Using method presented in this
paper, one can gain a better understanding of the characteristics of the hydraulic jump: instantaneous and timeaveraged FSI profile, as well as the frequency spectrum of FSI variations along the hydraulic jump. This can be
useful for the design of hydraulic structures, in particular – the hydraulic jump stilling basins.

AB - This paper presents the results of the investigation of pollutant build-up on impervious surfaces of a parking lot in Belgrade, Serbia during the summer months. Contaminant build-up was found to be greater on asphalt surfaces directly exposed to vehicular traffic than on concrete walkways. The difference in the amounts of accumulated pollutants between asphalt and concrete were significant: for total solids (TS), total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), heavy metals and total phosphorus (TP) accumulations were two to three times higher, while only 30% higher for total nitrogen (TN) and anions. Build-up of most of the measured parameters was best described by power functions. The highest surface loads were found for solids, COD, iron and zinc. A strong correlation was found between turbidity, TS, TSS, COD, heavy metals and phosphorus, while conductivity, nitrates and nitrites were weakly correlated to other parameters.

AB - The hydraulic engineering community has been making continuous efforts to improve the
procedure for estimation of a stage discharge curve in a compound channel over the last twenty five years. The reason for this is the fact that tests in laboratory conditions have shown that the classical approach based on the divided channel method, which uses Manning’s equation, overestimates the discharge by more than 60% for high floodplain submergence ratios (> 0.3). Mathematical models that were developed and/or improved during this period were primarily tested using uniform or non-uniform flow data from laboratory flumes. This paper aims at applying one of these models in estimating the stage discharge curve under the flood conditions at one gauging station. More precisely, this will be the exchange discharge model, which is a 1D flow model. Apart from the momentum exchange due to turbulent diffusion, this model also considers the momentum exchange due to mass transfer between the main channel and floodplains, as rivers and streams have non-prismatic channels. The Slovac gauging station on the Kolubara River will be used for the case study, since there are floods observation data for this station available. The discharge values obtained for the highest recorded water levels
using the classical approach (divided channel method) and the exchange discharge method will be compared with the official records of the Republic hydrometeorological service of Serbia.

AB - Parameters of 1D confluence models are originally defined for concordant beds’ (CB’s) confluences. This paper aims at estimating these parameters for discordant beds’ confluences using numerical simulation results of 3D flow. A 3D finite-volume based model SSIIM2 that was successfully validated in CB’s confluences is applied in this study, too. Confluences with the low, moderate and maximal observed bed elevation discordance ratio values are analysed for three characteristic hydrological scenarios: dominance of the tributary flow, equal contributions of the combining flows and dominance of the main-river flow. It is shown that: 1) the mean flow angle δ approaches junction angle α with the increase in bed elevation discordance, especially when tributary flow dominates, 2) the value of Hager’s correction coefficient σ is not constant and 3) the contribution of the tributary flow to the 1D momentum equation is under predicted when either parameter δ or σ is used for its estimation.

On the effect of bed elevation discordance in confluences with unequal channel widths

AB - The paper studies the effect of bed elevation discordance on the hydrodynamics in fixed-bed open channel
confluences where the tributary channel is narrower than the main channel and where the flow is subcritical. The
study is inspired by two facts: 1) that the main river is wider than the tributary in majority of cases and 2) that the
bed elevation discordance is a usual morphological feature in alluvial river confluences. To this aim nine
confluence layouts with three channel width ratios BT / BMR = {1.00, 0.75, 0.50} and three extents of bed
elevation discordance ΔzT / hd = {0.10, 0.25, 0.50} are analysed under the three possible hydrological scenarios
defined by the discharge ratio values DR = QMR / Qtot ={0.250, 0.583, 0.750}. It is found that: 1) the tributary flow
acts as a jet when DR = 0.250 regardless of the BT / BMR and ΔzT / hd values, 2) the recirculation zone with several
vortices exists throughout the flow depth when DR = 0.250 and BT < BMR, 3) the primary vortex is shifted farther
downstream and the secondary one is inclined and attached to the boundary streamline, 4) the strong shear exists
both in the horizontal and vertical planes and 5) the shear layer is developed on each side of the inclined
recirculation zone.
