AB - Characteristic of the 20th century, in terms of civil engineering, is intensive construction without taking care about preservation of the natural resources and the impact of buildings on the environment in all stages of service life, especially after demolition of buildings and waste deposition. Because of that, at the end of the last century, generation of huge amounts of waste became one of the biggest environmental problems in the majority of the world. Recycling of 'old' concrete is accepted as one of sustainable solutions for the problems of construction and demolition waste (C&D) and preservation of natural resources of aggregate. The first part of the paper presents technological procedure for recycled concrete aggregate production, basic properties of obtained aggregate and properties of recycled aggregate concrete. In the second part of the paper, results of own comparative investigation of properties of common and self-compacting concrete with coarse recycled concrete aggregate, are briefly presented. It was concluded that by using of quality uncontaminated recycled concrete aggregate it is possible to produce concrete with satisfactory performances that are not different from properties of ordinary concrete produced with natural aggregate. .

AB - Constant and rapid increase in construction and demolition (C&D) waste generation and consumption of natural aggregate for concrete production became one of the biggest environmental problems in the construction industry. Recycling of C&D waste represents one way to convert a waste product into a resource but the environment benefits through energy consumption, emissions and fallouts reductions are not certain. The main purpose of this study is to determine the potentials of recycled aggregate concrete (concrete made with recycled concrete aggregate) for structural applications and to compare the environmental impact of the production of two types of ready-mixed concrete: natural aggregate concrete (NAC) made entirely with river aggregate and recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) made with natural fine and recycled coarse aggregate. Based on the analysis of up-to-date experimental evidence, including own tests results, it is concluded that utilization of RAC for low-to-middle strength structural concrete and non-aggressive exposure conditions is technically feasible. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is performed for raw material extraction and material production part of the concrete life cycle including transport. Assessment is based on local LCI data and on typical conditions in Serbia. Results of this specific case study show that impacts of aggregate and cement production phases are slightly larger for RAC than for NAC but the total environmental impacts depend on the natural and recycled aggregates transport distances and on transport types. Limit natural aggregate transport distances above which the environmental impacts of RAC can be equal or even lower than the impacts of NAC are calculated for the specific case study.

AB - A comparative analysis of the experimental results of the properties of fresh and hardened concrete with different replacement ratios of natural with recycled coarse aggregate is presented in the paper. Recycled aggregate was made by crushing the waste concrete of laboratory test cubes and precast concrete columns. Three types of concrete mixtures were tested: concrete made entirely with natural aggregate (NAC) as a control concrete and two types of concrete made with natural fine and recycled coarse aggregate (50% and 100% replacement of coarse recycled aggregate). Ninety-nine specimens were made for the testing of the basic properties of hardened concrete. Load testing of reinforced concrete beams made of the investigated concrete types is also presented in the paper. Regardless of the replacement ratio, recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) had a satisfactory performance, which did not differ significantly from the performance of control concrete in this experimental research. However, for this to be fulfilled, it is necessary to use quality recycled concrete coarse aggregate and to follow the specific rules for design and production of this new concrete type.

AB - This state-of-the-art paper deals with the differences in production technology of concrete made with recycled aggregate. The properties of recycled aggregate, as a component for new concrete production, are being analyzed in the first part of the paper as well as its specifics and distinctions in comparison to natural aggregate. Two-stage-mixing approaches, as a way to achieve concrete performance improvement, are also described and the examples of recycled aggregate concrete mixing with the addition of silica fume are given. The influence of variation of concrete component materials dosage is also analyzed. Further more, the examples of mortar component removal from recycled aggregate are described (e.g. with the aid of different acids) with the influence of this process on physical and mechanical properties of new concrete. Also, different ways of preparation of recycled aggregate (air-dried, water-saturated, surface-dry and oven-dried) are discussed. At the end, general guidelines for recycled aggregate concrete mix design are given.

AB - For the purpose of the environmental preservation and sustainable development, production of concrete made of recycled concrete rubble (recycled aggregate concrete-RAC) become more often. Results of experimental investigations of mechanical properties of RAC, performed in last 20 years, are presented in this paper. Test results of RAC compressive strength, tensile strength and elastic modulus are critically analyzed and compared. Comparison of natural aggregate concrete (NAC) and RAC properties is performed too, and differences and similarities are pointed out. Based on analyzed experimental results, it can be concluded that RAC has the future in structural applications. However, significant scatter of the test results points at a need for more experimental investigation of RAC properties, and especially, of structural elements made of RAC.

AB - Aspects of environmental safety, sustainable development, natural resources preservation and proper disposal of construction and demolition waste impose recycling as an important production technology of the construction materials. Recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) are commonly used in lower quality product applications such as road base and backfills. However, this material is presently often not considered for higher quality product applications such as aggregate for structural concrete, because of many performance considerations and lack of proper codes and standards. Among all the properties of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC), microstructure and durability related properties are the most unknown ones. This paper presents the results of up-to-date research in this area. On the basis of analysis of test results it can be concluded that there is no major difference between the carbonization depth and chloride penetration of recycled aggregate concrete and natural aggregate concrete. No specific conclusions can be made for freezing and thawing resistance and susceptibility to alkali-aggregate reaction of RAC because of the lack of tests, so further research into these areas is needed. .

AB - Recycling of waste concrete is one of the sustainable solutions for growing waste disposal crisis and depletion of natural aggregate sources. As a result of that process, recycled aggregate (RCA) is produced and it is used mostly in low-value application such as for pavement base. But from the viewpoint of promoting resource and energy saving and environmental preservation, it is essential to study if a concrete made of recycled aggregates - recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) can be effectively used as a structural material. Some experimental studies concerning flexural and shear behaviour of reinforced concrete beams made of recycled aggregate concrete are presented in this paper. Comparison of load-deflection behaviour, crack width and spacing, failure modes and ultimate bending and shear capacity of the beams made of natural (NAC) and recycled aggregate concrete is performed. On the basis of the limited reported test results, it is concluded that the behaviour of RAC beams made of concrete with only coarse aggregate recycled is satisfactory comparing to the behaviour of NAC beams, for service and ultimate short-term loading both. .
