Floods are natural events that have occurred since the earliest times, endangering people, their settlements and property. As a consequence of climate changes and changes in the catchment area (changes in land use, reclamation, etc.) the frequency and intensity of floods increased in the recent years. Therefore, special attention should be paid to the facilities that are particularly vulnerable to floods (such as thermal power plants and open-pit mines) due to immense direct and indirect damage that can be caused by their flooding. These facilities should be protected by a combination of active and passive flood protection measures, and appropriate hydrological monitoring should be undertaken. Described task is discussed in the article. Possible mitigation of flood waves achieved by proper management of multipurpose water resources systems (consisting of two cascade reservoirs in the Eastern Herzegovina) situated upstream from the thermal power plant and the open-pit mine are analyzed ...in paper. It is concluded that significant mitigation of the flood waves can be achieved even with reservoirs of relatively small active volume if operated properly.
