This dissertation deals with the general study of open conduits in which the flow progressively increases or decreases along the flow. These conduits in the form of canals of rectangular, triangular and trapezoidal cross-section, are present within the facilities that are often found in hydraulic engineering practice (side weirs, water intakes, ship locks, etc.). As a case of particular interest, prismatic and non-prismatic collecting channels with uniform inflow are considered in detail. The dissertation presents a qualitative analysis of the considered phenomenon, along with the application of dimensional analysis in order to establish flow criteria, and, by using dimensionless quantities, to generalize experimental results and formulate a general solution. Quantitative considerations are based on the assumption that linear flow in collecting canals is dominant, while letting the possibility of subsequent correction of the solution if there are significant deviations from the linear flow assumption. A general solution of the collecting channel, suitable for practical application, has been derived, which enables the outflow velocity from the collecting channel to be determined on the basis of the available height difference between the water levels at the upstream and downstream ends of the channel. The specificity of the approach that led to the general solution is that instead of depth as the primary quantity in open channel flows, the cross-sectional area is used, because inertial force and the force of gravity depend exclusively on the cross-section, while only the hydrostatic pressure force depends on depth, as well. In this way, quantities with greater influence are more suitable for problem analysis and formulation of the general solution. Based on numerous experiments, the designers are also enabled to determine the freeboard along a non-overflowed collecting channel.
