Mechanical behaviour of municipal solid waste is nonlinear and very complex due to extremematerial heterogeneity. Components of different types of materials, biodegradation of organiccomponents and large secondary settlement due to mechanical creep caused by repackaging ofwaste components due to biodegradation processes, cause difficulties in mathematically describingthe behaviour of municipal solid waste. Nonlinear elastic-plastic and viscous constitutive modelsdeveloped for soil can be the basis of a constitutive model for municipal solid waste, but they mustbe modified and adapted to the behaviour of municipal solid waste. The modification is primarilyreflected in the introduction of time-dependent processes that occur in municipal solid waste:mechanical creep and biodegradation.Within this thesis, a nonlinear elastic-plastic constitutive model for municipal solid waste - MSWmodel, based on the critical state theory and the Modified Cam Clay model, was formulated. TheMSW model in its formulation contains the increment of time-dependent volumetric deformationsdue to mechanical creep and biodegradation of waste. The MSW model is implemented in the ABAQUS / CAE program, based on the finite elementmethod, using the user subroutine UMAT and the Governing Parameter Method for the numericalintegration of constitutive relations of the model in which the mean effective stress is adopted forthe governing parameter.Validation of the MSW model was performed through comparison with published results ofoedometer tests and drained and undrained triaxial tests. Validations showed excellent matches ofthe predictions of the MSW model with the experimentally obtained values. The ability of the MSWmodel to adequately predict the behaviour of municipal solid waste was tested through the analysisof the boundary value problem by the finite element method, where the problem of the experimentallandfill settlement was analysed.en
