Abstract
The vertical extension of masonry buildings is a common need in built-up areas of the old city zones. The design of vertical extension is a special task for structural engineers, characterized by additional specifics in relation to a standard structural design. This paper presents a design methodology with all necessary steps for a successful design, starting from the initial state of the building to the program of geodetic monitoring. Each step is analyzed, its purpose and necessity is explained. The consequences, if any step is omitted in the design process, are highlighted. The paper also specifies the errors in the engineering practice, which in certain circumstances, can lead to unexpected consequences. The presented procedure represents a draft manual to professional engineers that should be part of design regulations.
