Abstract
In the analysis of tunnel lining - rock mass interaction, it is essential to consider partial stress release at the tunnel face, i.e. deformation of the tunnel walling that occurs before the application of the lining. Accordingly, it is important to develop an adequate numerical model considering tunneling face effects as well as construction sequence effects. Consequently, a 3D numerical modelling is necessary. Through the use of finite element method (FEM), a numerical model is developed enabling analysis of stress-strain states considering specific rock mass properties and consequent stages of a tunnel construction. In this first paper, some elements of FEM modeling of rock mass and tunneling were introduced. 3D numerical modelling of tunnel driving process is described: treatment of construction stages, and iterative procedure for simulating the tunneling face advancement. .
