AB  - The paper considers the influence of patch load length, flange thickness, and stiffener's characteristics
on the behaviour of steel plate girders subjected to patch loading in terms of elastic stability. The aim is
to show the dependence of the elastic critical load on the mentioned parameters, through the buckling
coefficients of the isolated web plate and steel I-girders subjected to patch loading.
The girder without transverse stiffeners in the load application zone, but with longitudinal stiffener was
analyzed. The buckling coefficients of clamped plate and I-girder are compared, and suggestions for
improving the EN1993-1-5 patch loading resistance model are presented. The paper gives a brief
overview of the ultimate load capacity of longitudinaly stiffened I-girders. Numerical results are
compared with the results of current standards EN1993-1-5.
The aim of this research is to single out the characteristics of the girders that have the greatest impact
on the elastic critical load. It is necessary to come up with new expressions for the calculation of the
buckling coefficient through more detailed and comprehensive analyzes. It is shown that the influence
of stiffener and flange cannot be neglected because both parameters are important.

Elastic critical load of longitudinally unstiffened I-girders subjected to patch loading

AB  - The paper considers the elastic critical load of longitudinally unstiffened I-girders subjected to a  localized load of variable length in the plane of the web. In the current regulations, the contribution of the patch load length and the flange thickness is not considered for calculating the elastic critical load. The influence of the boundary conditions on the vertical edges of the loaded panel on the value of the buckling coefficient is presented. An improved expression for the calculation of the buckling coefficients of longitudinally unstiffened I-girders is proposed.

Unfavorable geometric imperfections in steel plate girders subjected to localized loads

AB  - Recent experimental studies have shown that the current EN1993-1-5 patch loading resistance model underestimates the ultimate strength of steel plate girders in certain cases, especially for longitudinally stiffened steel plate girders and longer patch load lengths. In addition to this resistance model, the design standard allows the use of finite element analysis for the ultimate limit state. The existing design recommendations for an adequate ultimate limit state design are found insufficient. In the current paper, the imperfection sensitivity analysis of steel plate girders subjected to patch loading is performed. The paper presents a nonlinear finite element parametric study designed to determine the influence of a variety of geometric imperfections on the patch load resistance of longitudinally unstiffened and stiffened steel plate girders. Experimentally measured, buckling mode-affine, and hand-defined sinusoidal geometric imperfections were varied in the study in combination with varying patch load lengths and relative stiffnesses of the longitudinal stiffener.

The ultimate strength of longitudinally unstiffened and stiffened steel plate girders increases as the patch load length is increased for all the geometric imperfections considered. For relatively small patch load lengths, the relative stiffness of the longitudinal stiffener has no significant influence on the ultimate load regardless of the geometric imperfection. For longer patch load lengths, the ultimate strength is highly dependent on geometric imperfections. The influence of the web panel aspect ratio is shown to be negligible for smaller patch load lengths regardless of the geometric imperfection, while for longer applied loads, the impact of this ratio is dependent on the geometric imperfection.

Unfavorable geometric imperfections in steel plate girders subjected to patch loading are governed by the patch load length and the relative stiffness of the longitudinal stiffener. Different unfavorable geometric imperfections were found for different patch load lengths and relative stiffnesses. Local geometric imperfections defined in the upper web sub-panel yield lower ultimate strengths than global geometric imperfections (defined over the whole web depth). The lowest patch load resistances were returned for geometric imperfections that resembled the deformation at collapse (collapse-affine geometric imperfections). Although the concept of collapse-affine geometric imperfections seems impractical for design purposes (a geometrically and materially nonlinear analysis must be conducted before collapse-affine geometric imperfection shapes are determined), the use of these imperfection shapes is recommended.

Unfavorable imperfection shapes in steel plate girders for web local crippling

AB  - The paper reports a numerical investigation and determination of unfavorable geometric imperfection shapes in steel plate girders subjected to concentrated compressive forces by means of the ultimate limit state. This load case is present in many engineering applications, including beam-beam and beam-column connections, deep crane runway beams loaded by crane wheels, and during the incremental launching of multi-span steel and composite bridges over temporary or permanent supports. A parametric imperfection-sensitivity study has been performed on I-shaped steel plate girders employing geometrically and materially nonlinear finite element analysis. Experimentally measured, buckling mode-affine, and hand defined sinusoidal geometric imperfections were varied in the study in combination with varying patch load lengths and relative stiffnesses of the longitudinal stiffener. It is shown in the paper that geometric imperfections can play a decisive role and significantly affect the ultimate strength of longitudinally unstiffened and stiffened steel plate girders. Unfavorable geometric imperfection shapes in steel plate girders subjected to edge loading are governed by the patch load length and the relative stiffness of the longitudinal stiffener. Different unfavorable geometric imperfections were found for different patch load lengths and relative stiffnesses. Local geometric imperfections defined in the upper web sub-panel yield lower ultimate strengths than global geometric imperfections (defined over the whole web depth). The lowest ultimate strengths were returned for geometric imperfections that resembled the deformation at collapse (collapse-affine imperfections). Further research should focus on finding an equivalent shape that resembles the deformation at failure for different patch load lengths and girder characteristics.

abstract = "The paper reports a numerical investigation and determination of unfavorable geometric imperfection shapes in steel plate girders subjected to concentrated compressive forces by means of the ultimate limit state. This load case is present in many engineering applications, including beam-beam and beam-column connections, deep crane runway beams loaded by crane wheels, and during the incremental launching of multi-span steel and composite bridges over temporary or permanent supports. A parametric imperfection-sensitivity study has been performed on I-shaped steel plate girders employing geometrically and materially nonlinear finite element analysis. Experimentally measured, buckling mode-affine, and hand defined sinusoidal geometric imperfections were varied in the study in combination with varying patch load lengths and relative stiffnesses of the longitudinal stiffener. It is shown in the paper that geometric imperfections can play a decisive role and significantly affect the ultimate strength of longitudinally unstiffened and stiffened steel plate girders. Unfavorable geometric imperfection shapes in steel plate girders subjected to edge loading are governed by the patch load length and the relative stiffness of the longitudinal stiffener. Different unfavorable geometric imperfections were found for different patch load lengths and relative stiffnesses. Local geometric imperfections defined in the upper web sub-panel yield lower ultimate strengths than global geometric imperfections (defined over the whole web depth). The lowest ultimate strengths were returned for geometric imperfections that resembled the deformation at collapse (collapse-affine imperfections). Further research should focus on finding an equivalent shape that resembles the deformation at failure for different patch load lengths and girder characteristics.",

AB  - The companion paper Part I [1] deals with the experimental campaign of longitudinally stiffened plate girders
subjected exclusively to patch loading. The current paper focuses on the numerical research and parametric

formed shape at the collapse (collapse-affine imperfections), especially in the zone where the load is applied,
will give the most unfavorable ultimate strengths. For the considered geometry in the present paper, the third
buckling mode of longitudinally stiffened girders corresponds to the deformed shape and the lowest ultimate
strengths are obtained.

AB  - The determination of the elastic critical load (buckling load) is an important element of the assessment of the ultimate load of plate girders according to Eurocode 3 for design of steel structures. An analysis of the critical load of a plate corresponding to the web of an I-girder for different boundary conditions and the critical load of the I-girder itself subjected to patch load is given in the paper. Conclusions regarding their correspondence are given. Also, experimentally determined ultimate loads of I-girders are compared with predictive values according to Eurocode 3 for the models used in this analysis. A modified procedure for the ultimate load determination is proposed by following the Eurocode 3 algorithm and changing only buckling coefficient. In order to improve the ultimate load prediction, it is suggested to calculate the buckling coefficient also as a function of patch load length.
AB  - Određivanje elastične kritične sile (sile izbočavanja) predstavlja važan element u određivanju granične nosivosti limenih nosača prema Evrokodu 3 za proračun čeličnih konstrukcija. U radu se daje analiza kritične sile izbočavanja izolovane ploče koja odgovara rebru Inosača s variranim uslovima oslanjanja i kritične sile koja odgovara samom I-nosaču, usled dejstva lokalizovanog opterećenja. Dati su zaključci o njihovoj vezi. Takođe, upoređena su eksperimentalno određena granična opterećenja I-nosača s vrednostima prema Evrokodu 3, za modele korišćene u ovoj analizi. Predložena je izmenjena procedura za određivanje granične nosivosti, koja sledi algoritam dat u Evrokodu 3, a prema kojoj se modifikuje izraz za određivanje koeficijenta izbočavanja. Kako bi se poboljšalo određivanje granične nosivosti, predloženo je računanje koeficijenata izbočavanja i u funkciji dužine lokalizovanog opterećenja.

Longitudinal shear of concrete slab in composite beam analysis according to EC4

AB  - In this paper, the analysis of longitudinal shear in concrete slab, according to Eurocode 4 (EN 1994-1-1:2004), is shown. The potential surfaces of shear failure in solid and composite slab are analyzed. For each potential surface of shear failure, the corresponding length is defined. The transverse reinforcement should be determined from the condition that, for any potential surface of shear failure, the design longitudinal shear per unit length (shear flow) is not greater than the longitudinal shear resistance of the slab per unit length. The longitudinal shear resistance of concrete slab per unit length should be determined according to EN 1992-1-1. The rules for transverse reinforcement are based on a truss analogy, i.e. the concrete slab is considered as a truss system that has compressed concrete struts and tensioned reinforcement (chords).The failure occurs when either the reinforcement yields or the concrete struts fail in compression. The transverse reinforcement in the concrete slab transfers the shear stresses from studs (shear connectors) and ensures that the premature failure of the slab will not occur.
AB  - U radu se prikazuje proračun podužnog smicanja u betonskoj ploči prema Evrokodu 4 (EN 1994-1-1:2004). Analiziraju se potencijalne površine loma usled podužnog smicanja, u punoj i spregnutoj betonskoj ploči. Za svaku potencijalnu površinu loma definiše se odgovarajuća dužina površine smicanja. Proračun nosivosti pri podužnom smicanju se zasniva na uslovu da proračunski podužni napon smicanja, bilo koje potencijalne površine loma usled podužnog smicanja u okviru ploče, ne bude veći od proračunske nosivosti pri podužnom smicanju. Proračunska nosivost pri podužnom smicanju betonske ploče se određuje u skladu sa EN 1992-1-1. Ovaj proračun se zasniva na modelu rešetke, tj. betonska ploča se posmatra kao sistem kosih (dijagonalnih) pritisnutih betonskih štapova kombinovan sa zategama koje predstavlja poprečna zategnuta armatura. Gubitak nosivosti (lom) betonske ploče nastaje ako dođe do tečenja (loma) u armaturi ili ako dođe do drobljenja betona u pritisnutim štapovima. U betonskoj ploči se obezbeđuje adekvatna površina poprečne armature koja će da prenese smičuće napone iz moždanika i obezbedi da ne dođe do prevremenog loma u betonu.

AB  - During his long scientific and professional activity spanning over half a century and going through different phases, professor Nikola Hajdin obtained results of greater or lesser significance depending on the state of development of science and technology. This overview singles out the results which, in our opinion and that of scientific criticism, rendered a specific contribution to the progress of science and its applications. It is primarily his written work and his structures, predominantly bridges, which signified greater or lesser headway in these areas. Here we have singled out, first and foremost, works which have been acknowledged and highly acclaimed in the country and abroad and which constitute a scientific or constructive contribution to progress. Professor Hajdin’s choices during studies seemed to indicate that he would devote his whole life to scientific work in the field of applied mechanics, especially structural mechanics. However, he soon realized that any significant and valuable effort in structural mechanics, in addition to a theoretical basis, required extensive knowledge of real structures, their development and tendencies substantially influencing scientific endeavor in this area. He realized at a very early stage that these were simultaneous and interactive processes. Many outstanding structural achievements came into being under the influence and with knowledge of applied mechanics, such as the discoveries of French scientists such as Claude-Louis Navier, Barré de Saint-Venant and others, which extensively transformed practical know-how in the field of structures.A feedback effect is visible everywhere. One of the most important is definitely the method of finite elements which sprang from practical needs and theoretical investigation of structures. There are very many examples of both. Such a perception as well as the need for scientists to tackle practical problems and application in design prompted professor Hajdin to take up designing as a parallel activity, one he initially considered to be more of a hobby, and later a serious and responsible job in which he incorporated upon, as this survey will show, the results of his scientific work, with some of the applications serving to verify scientific results. This will be discussed at length, for it is precisely this combination that is the chief characteristic of his work. If one reads only his articles, monographs and books dealing with theory, one will not always be able to see where specific results applied to structures lead. The creative opus of professor Hajdin can be broadly divided into six periods, i.e. six areas in which he gave a contribution to science and its applications, and one can say, indeed a contribution to general progress.

abstract = "During his long scientific and professional activity spanning over half a century and going through different phases, professor Nikola Hajdin obtained results of greater or lesser significance depending on the state of development of science and technology. This overview singles out the results which, in our opinion and that of scientific criticism, rendered a specific contribution to the progress of science and its applications. It is primarily his written work and his structures, predominantly bridges, which signified greater or lesser headway in these areas. Here we have singled out, first and foremost, works which have been acknowledged and highly acclaimed in the country and abroad and which constitute a scientific or constructive contribution to progress.
