Highway Construction Cost Estimation: Identification and Analysis of the Owners’ Perceptions on Cost Drivers

AB  - Highway construction cost estimates in the early stages of the project can be characterized as quite challenging and risky. Determination of the cost drivers on which the cost estimates are based requires a certain effort (time and money), which makes cost estimates even more challenging. In order to determine the owners' perceptions on the cost drivers from the previously proposed list, an empirical research (questionnaire survey) was conducted where the respondents rated the degree of influence that each cost driver has on highway construction costs and the degree of effort that needs to be invested to establish a cost driver's value. The survey results indicated that owners invest great efforts in the development of project documentation, but also owners' concerns regarding environmental protection issues. Also, they consider contractual cost drivers, such as procurement method, to be very important cost drivers for the highway construction cost estimation.

AB  - Cost estimates in the early stages of project development are essential for making the right deci-sions, but they are a huge challenge and risk for owners and potential contractors due to limited information about the characteristics of the future highway project. While previous studies were mainly focused on achieving the highest possible estimation accuracy, this paper aims to propose cost estimation models that can provide satisfactory accuracy with the least possible effort, and to compare the perspectives of owners and contractors, as the key stakeholders on projects. To de-termine cost drivers (CDs) which have a high influence on highway construction costs and re-quire low effort for their establishment, a questionnaire survey was conducted. Based on the key stakeholders’ perceptions and collected data set, cost estimation models were developed using multiple regression analysis, artificial neural networks, and XGBoost. The results show that rea-sonable cost estimation accuracy can be achieved with a relatively low effort for 3 CDs for the owners' perspective and 5 CDs for the contractors' perspective. Additional inclusion of input CDs in models does not necessarily imply an increase in accuracy. Also, the questionnaire results show that owners are more concerned about environmental issues, while contractors are more con-cerned about the possible changes in resource prices (especially after recent high increases caused by COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war). These findings can help owners and potential con-tractors in intelligent decision-making in the early stages of future highway construction projects.

Detection and In-Depth Analysis of Causes of Delay in Construction Projects: Synergy between Machine Learning and Expert Knowledge

AB  - Due to numerous reasons, construction projects often fail to achieve the planned duration. Detecting causes of delays (CoD) is the first step in eliminating or mitigating potential delays in future projects. The goal of research is unbiased CoD detection at a single project level, with the ultimate goal to discover the root causes of delay. The existing approach is based on expert knowledge which is used to create CoD lists for projects in general or groups of similar projects. When applied to a single project, it is burdened with bias, as shown on a case project returning low Spearman Rank correlation values. This research introduces a Delay Root causes Extraction and Analysis Model—DREAM. The proposed model combines expert knowledge, machine learning techniques, and Minutes of Meetings (MoM) as an unutilized extensive source of information. In the first phase, DREAM outputs a CoD list based on occurring frequency in MoM with satisfactory recall values, significantly reducing expert-induced subjectivism. In the second phase, enabled by MoM dates, DREAM adds another dimension to delay analysis—temporal CoD distribution. By analyzing corresponding informative charts, experts can understand the nature of delays and discover the root CoD, allowing intelligent decision making on future projects.

Circular Economy in Construction and Demolition Waste Management in the Western Balkans: A Sustainability Assessment Framework

AB  - Population growth, consumerism and linear (take-make-dispose) economy models have been piling up waste for decades. The construction industry is also based primarily on linear economy models, but the good news is that most of the waste can be re-used or recycled. So far, numerous models for managing construction and demolition waste in a sustainable way have been developed, but only a few models have included circular economy approaches. The main objective of this study is to propose an integrated framework for the sustainability assessment of CDW management. Apart from the economic, environmental and social aspects of sustainability, this model also includes circular economy principles. The proposed framework is based on the integration of existing methods: bottom-up materials stock approximation; cost–benefit analysis for criteria calculation; and scenario and multi-criteria decision-making analysis for sustainability. It is suggested that the European average recovery rates should be used for future scenario development. With higher re-use and recycling rates, the potential for the circularity of the recovered waste grows. In an effort to increase circularity in the region, particular attention was devoted to customize the framework and examine its potential for use in the Western Balkan countries. The framework may also be useful in countries with immature construction and demolition waste management

Multi-Objective Optimization Model for The Selection of Measures for Energy Efficient Retrofitting of Building Envelopes

AB  - Within this paper, a multi-criteria decision-making model for evaluating the energy efficiency of building construction measures for new or existing buildings will be presented. The proposed model observes the optimization process simultaneously through the four most important aspects of energy efficiency: economic aspect, energy consumption, environmental impact and indoor comfort, taking into account factors that may occur in the building environment during its operation, such as inflation and currency depreciation/appreciation. The model introduces dynamic thermal parameters of the wall that reflect a thermal accumulation of the building envelope and its ability to provide thermal comfort in time-varying atmospheric conditions in the building environment.

BIM based project and digital building model management: applications and emerging standards

AB  - Architectural design and building construction are increasingly digitalized. A large number of
applications exist that enable creation of digital building models either in the form of
advanced geometry modelling applications, algorithmic modelling applications or BIM
applications. Each application creates intrinsic digital model using its proprietary data
format. The problem of connecting such diverse models to a coherent project environment
is addressed by open interoperability file format – IFC. But only data format does not
provide seamless interoperability, it is necessary to create proper IFC model for each
particular occasion of model exchange.
Existence of many diverse files and formats that all represent different aspects of digital
building model posed to the AEC stakeholders the problem of managing a BIM project. The
paper gives a historical overview of development of BIM applications dedicated to digital
building model assessment from model viewers, through model explorers, to modern BIM
project management applications and their connection to a set of ISO 19650 standards. The
new standards and related applications does not provide complete solution to the
management of digital building models but represent important evolutionary step in BIM
progress.

format. The problem of connecting such diverse models to a coherent project environment
is addressed by open interoperability file format – IFC. But only data format does not
provide seamless interoperability, it is necessary to create proper IFC model for each
particular occasion of model exchange.
Existence of many diverse files and formats that all represent different aspects of digital
building model posed to the AEC stakeholders the problem of managing a BIM project. The
paper gives a historical overview of development of BIM applications dedicated to digital
building model assessment from model viewers, through model explorers, to modern BIM
project management applications and their connection to a set of ISO 19650 standards. The
new standards and related applications does not provide complete solution to the
management of digital building models but represent important evolutionary step in BIM
progress.",

projects in respect of time and money in all project phases. It has been noted that BIM was
successful in fulfilling these goals in all countries which have imposed BIM implementation
for certain types of projects in their legislation and application of BIM becomes a standard all
over the world. In order to keep the pace with everyday demands of the construction industry,
the Department for Construction Project Management at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in
Belgrade has introduced BIM in lecturing on Construction Project Management. In the latest
accreditation, two new courses have been introduced. “The basics of designing by applying
BIM technology”, has been lectured at the final year of bachelor studies from the year
2017/2018. “BIM in Construction Project Management”, will be lectured at the master level
starting from October 2019. Based on previous and on-going research the authors developed
curriculums that will enable students to better understand the use of BIM in construction project
management. This paper presents (1) previous experience of BIM education within the CPM
module and (2) goals and first results of new courses being introduced in students education as
well as teaching materials and applied theoretical and practical teaching methods performed in
ICT labs with already implemented typical software for 3D modeling of construction and plans
for introducing 4D and 5D functionalities.

AB  - Tokom realiazacije projekta česta su kašnjenja od strane svih učesnika na projektu. Analiza kašnjenja ima za cilj ne samo kvantifikaciju ukupnog kašnjenja na projektu, već i determinaciju i raspodelu  uticaja svakog od učesnika na kašnjenje projekta. Metode koje se sreću u literaturi i praksi odlikuju različiti pristupi u evaluaciji kašnjenja i dodeljivanja odgovornosti. Cilj ovog rada predstavlja analizu procesa i dobijenih rezultata As Planned vs As Built  i Impacted as planned metoda za analizu kašnjenja sa studijom slučaja. Proračun će biti sproveden u softverskom paketu MS Project.

Takođe, od svih redukcionih koeficijenata, njega je najteže predvideti. Da bi se preciznije proračunao učinak rada mašina, neophodno je definisati metodologiju za usvajanje koeficijenta Kv. AB  - One basic criteria for determining the replacement time of construction

AB  - Ogroman napredak informacionih tehnologija i sredstava komunikacije poslednjih decenija prožima mnoge sfere društva. U građevinskoj industriji, koju sve više zahvata proces digitalizacije, promene se odslikavaju u načinu realizacije projekata gde se proces komunikacije i kolaboracije između učesnika na projektu odvija posredstvom informacija vezanih za 3D modele građevinskih objekata, realizovanih upotrebom savremenih softvera za projektovanje i izvođenje građevinskih objekata. Ova revolucija u građevinarstvu objedinjena je konceptom Building Information Modeling (BIM) – informaciono modeliranje građevinskih objekata. Kako bi se odgovorilo novim tehnološkim zahtevima, na Građevinskom fakultetu – Univerziteta u Beogradu od tekuće (2017/2018) školske godine uvedena je nastava iz BIM-a na završnim godinama studija na modulu za Menadžmet, tehnologiju i informatiku u građevinarstvu. U radu su prikazani ciljevi i ishodi novih predmeta kroz nastavni sadržaj i primenjene metode u izvođenju teorijske, a posebno praktične nastave koja se odvija u računarskim salama uz upotrebu savremenih softvera za 3D modelovanje građevinskih objekata.

AB  - The possibility of short-term water flow forecasting in a karst region is presented in this paper. Four state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms are used for the one day ahead forecasting: multi-layer perceptron neural network, radial basis function neural network, support vector machines for regression (SVR), and adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The results show that the ANFIS model outperforms other algorithms when the root mean square error and mean absolute error are used as quality indicators.

This article provides a method of identifying, in a quantitative and rigorous manner, the characteristics related to project management success in megaprojects. The research is grounded in 44 megaprojects and a systematic, empirically based methodology that employs the Fisher's exact test and machine learning techniques to identify the correlation between megaprojects' characteristics and performance, paving the way to an understanding of their causation.

A computational method for laminated composite plates based on layerwise theory

AB  - This paper presents a new computational method for stress-strain analysis of simply supported rectangular cross-ply laminated composite plates subjected to transverse loads which was applied in the authors FORTRAN program code. The algorithm of the program is based on the layerwise theory of Reddy. Equations obtained by applying the principle of virtual displacements were solved in a closed form using double trigonometric series. Convergence control and numerical stability of the program's outputs: displacements and stresses, with appropriate comments, are discussed. Comparison and verification of the presented computational method was carried out in relation to the results given in the available literature. Also, a comparison with the values calculated using the ANSYS program which is based on finite element method was performed. The paper presents and provides comments on edge dimensionless displacements and (v) over bar of a laminated plate. For the adopted simply supported rectangular four-layer plate with antisynimetric layer an analysis of dimensionless deflection change in the middle of the plate and displacemen (u) over bar on the edge of the plate was performed, as well as the analysis of the ratio between the maximum values sigma(xy)/sigma(yy) and sigma(yz)/sigma(yy) due to the change of the aspect ratio a/b, the side-to-thickness ratio b/h and elastic modulus ratio E-1/E-2. The results of the proposed computational model based on the layerwise theory are given in a tabular and graphical form.

AB  - Rezidualna vrednost, ili vrednost polovne mašine definiše se kao cena za koju se korišćena mehanizacija može prodati na tržtu u određenom periodu. Ovo istraživanje ima za cilj da pomogne razvoju kreiranja regresionog modela koji mogu da predvide rezidualnu vrednost mašine na aukciji. Istraživanje je pokazalo da postoji razlika u senzitivnosti varijabli onih mašina čiji je ukupni kumulativni broj sati veći od 2000 u odnosu na mašine sa manje od 2000 radnih sati. Rezidualna vrednost mašine ima veću senzitivnost u odnosu na varijablu koja opisuje kalendarsku starost mašine, nego kumulativni broj sati rada mašine.

abstract = "Rezidualna vrednost, ili vrednost polovne mašine definiše se kao cena za koju se korišćena mehanizacija može prodati na tržtu u određenom periodu. Ovo istraživanje ima za cilj da pomogne razvoju kreiranja regresionog modela koji mogu da predvide rezidualnu vrednost mašine na aukciji. Istraživanje je pokazalo da postoji razlika u senzitivnosti varijabli onih mašina čiji je ukupni kumulativni broj sati veći od 2000 u odnosu na mašine sa manje od 2000 radnih sati. Rezidualna vrednost mašine ima veću senzitivnost u odnosu na varijablu koja opisuje kalendarsku starost mašine, nego kumulativni broj sati rada mašine.",

Current strategy for highway construction in the Republic of Serbia

AB  - In order to achieve the economic development of the Republic of Serbia, it is necessary to provide adequate traffic infrastructure, particularly highways. The second lane on the northern branch of Corridor X (E-75) from Horgoš to Belgrade has been completed, and the construction works on the eastern branch (E-80) from Niš to the Bulgarian border and on the southern branch (E-75) from Leskovac to the Macedonian border are ongoing. Works are also in progress on the Belgrade bypass. Works on the E-763 ("Corridor 11") are executed between Obrenovac and Preljina. Continuation of this road towards Montenegro is being prepared. Also preparations for the highway on the E-761 from Pojate to Preljina are ongoing.
AB  - U cilju ostvarivanja ekonomskog razvoja Republike Srbije neophodno je obezbediti odgovarajuću saobraćanu infrastrukturu, a naročito autoputsku. Završena je izgradnja druge trake na severnom kraku Koridora X (E-75) od Horgoša do Beograda, a u toku je izvođenje radova na istočnom kraku (E-80) od Niša do granice sa Bugarskom i južnom kraku (E-75) od Leskovca do granice sa Makedonijom. Takođe su u toku radovi na obilaznici Beograda. Radovi na E-763 (“Koridor 11”) se izvode od Obrenovca do Preljine, a u pripremi je nastavak ovog puta prema Crnoj Gori kao i autoput na E-761 od Pojata do Preljine
