AB - Pile cap is a typical example of a discontinuity region, where the classical beam theory does not apply. Therefore, strut-and-tie (STM) model is considered appropriate for the analysis of pile caps. Although, the strut-and-tie method is a powerful tool, one of its shortcomings is the need for guidelines for the standardized models. Otherwise, it is left to the designer to come up subjectively with the STM model, which is a sensitive task. In literature, usually simple loading (axial compression or compression with bending only in one direction) on a four-pile cap is discussed. In practice, for real bridge structure, usual loading is alternate biaxial bending, along with compression, on much larger number of piles, making the typical four-pile caps models useless. A practical methodology for creating pile cap model with large number of piles and with complex loading is presented step-by-step. It is further illustrated for the cases with six piles and eight piles from the actual bridge structures, where the method was applied in practice.

Contemporary building codes introduce consideration of the reliability in structural design. Here, the concept of risk takes into account the level of consequences of a failure. Structural engineers, used to deterministic calculation procedures, are often unfamiliar with the uncertainties associated with risk analysis. An overview of the basic principles of risk management in civil engineering is presented in this paper.

AB - Shear design in Eurocode 2 is generally developed for rectangular sections or T-sections that have
clearly defined tension reinforcement, concentrated in the cross-sectional tension zone, and an
unambiguous width of compressed diagonals. In circular sections, which are also frequent in practice, the reinforcement is evenly distributed along the circumference of the section, while the width of the section changes continuously along the height.
Several proposals for the shear design of circular sections can be found in the literature, based on a relatively limited experimental database, which generally provide different structural resistances. This paper aims to enable the practical application of the Eurocode 2 variable-angle truss model in the shear design of elements of circular cross-section, such as columns or piles. It is intended to make a correct interpretation of the truss model with no intention to propose an improved procedure in accordance with the available experimental results.

AB - Indirect deflection control usually applies the limitation of the span-to-depth
ratio. The procedures that have developed in the past decades have mostly
been derived for predefined values of some of the relevant parameters. Assigning
values to parameters simplifies the application of criteria. Predefined
values may not be suitable for all design situations and some of the recently
published procedures allow direct selection of relevant parameters. This paper
offers new expressions for span-to-depth ratio limits for deflection control.
Expressions include cross-section size, area, and position of tensile and compressive
reinforcement, mechanical and long-term properties of concrete and
deflection limit. The load level is represented by the stress in the tensile reinforcement
so that the ratio of live and total load can be arbitrary. The dimensionless
form of deflection calculation by numerical integration of the mean
curvature according to Eurocode 2 is used to formulate the expressions. The
proposed procedure is verified with a large number of numerical simulations
for different combinations of inputs. Measured long-term deflections, available
from the literature, are also used to test the procedure. The expressions are
suitable for both deflection control and conceptual design.

AB - Structural Eurocodes have superseded national design codes in a number of countries. The education
of engineers is necessary for quick and successful adaptation to new standards. Qualified institutions
should organize appropriate training programs and provide quality manuals with clear and precise
instructions.
A possible approach for practicing the new regulations is to compare the procedures and results of the
design according to the former regulations, which are well known by the designers, and the
corresponding procedures in the new regulations.
This paper compares the basic design inputs in the Code for Concrete Structures of the Former
Yugoslavia (BAB 87) and Eurocode 2 (EN 1992-1-1: 2004). In addition, a comparison of the basic
ULS and SLS design procedures is presented, as well as an analysis of the obtained results. ULS
design for bending and for shear are studied. Control of cracking and deflection control are covered in
the SLS domain.
The comparisons are intended to indicate to the designers whether their previous experience in the
design of structures is in accordance with the requirements of the new regulations. The derived
conclusions can be useful in assessing the compliance of existing structures, designed according to

abstract = "Structural Eurocodes have superseded national design codes in a number of countries.
The derived
conclusions can be useful in assessing the compliance of existing structures, designed according to
BAB 87, with the requirements of Eurocode 2",

AB - Deflection control of two-way slabs is a very complex task considering their possible geometries, structural systems, reinforcement layouts and loading histories, as well as the large number of influencing parameters and moment redistribution due to cracking and time-dependent effects of creep and shrinkage. As a consequence, sufficiently simple and accurate methods for deflection control of two-way reinforced concrete slabs have are still missing. In order to fill this gap, a novel method was developed as an adaptation of the ζ-method (as defined by the fib Model Code 2010) of interpolating deflections between the uncracked and fully cracked state. The method is based on deflections obtained using linear-elastic analyses in finite element software, which are then transformed through a series of stiffness normalizations to obtain time-dependent deflections due to load and shrinkage. Furthermore, the moment redistribution capacity of two-way slabs is accounted for through adjustments of the interpolation coefficient ζ. The method is tested against available experimental results from literature and compared with results obtained using existing methods such as the crossing beam method. The results show good precision and accuracy of the proposed method and an improvement compared with existing methods.

AB - The design of concrete members for shear without stirrups, except for the
minimum required, has become a major issue worldwide. It was noticed that the shear
capacity of concrete element according to the Eurocode 2 often gives significant smaller
values than the one predicted by former codes. This fact brought into focus the assessment
of the existing structures which were built with minimum shear reinforcement. Most of the
Code provisions for shear for members without shear reinforcement are based on
empirical relationships. In general, Eurocode 2 doesn’t make a difference between
reinforced and prestressed elements. Several clauses in EN1992-1-1 which deal with the
shear design are critically reviewed in the paper.

AB - Deflections are among the most complex aspects of reinforced concrete behavior.
Furthermore, deflection control is increasingly a governing criterion in
design, especially in the case of two-way members such as flat slabs or edgesupported
slabs. However, simple and theoretically sound and adequately verified
methods for calculating deflections of two-way reinforced concrete members
have been lacking. Therefore, in this study, a novel method is proposed
for deflection control of two-way slabs. The method is an extension of the
ζ-method (as defined by Eurocode 2 and the fib Model Code 2010) of interpolating
deflections between the uncracked and fully cracked state. As a basis,
the method uses elastic deflections that are obtained through linear elastic
analyses in finite element software. The elastic deflection is then adequately
transformed based on the properties of a representative section, to account for
cracking, shrinkage and creep according to a modified version of the ζ-method.
Finally, the method is validated against available experimental results from literature,
obtaining satisfactory precision and accuracy. The method proposed
in this study aims at providing an easy-to-use tool for designers carrying out
deflection control of two-way reinforced concrete slabs.

AB - The use of fly ash in concrete lasts for almost a century. The first idea of using concrete as a place to
deposit fly ash and merely reduce the amount of waste came a long way to a today’s use of fly ash as a
basic component material of concrete. Extensive research and practical application regarding different
concrete types promoted the fly ash as a valuable supplementary cementitious material. The best use
of fly ash in concrete can be achieved only if the influence of fly ash on all concrete properties is
known. This paper gives a comprehensive summary of all fly ash applications in concrete with a
review of existing practical application, implementation in standards and challenges still to be
overcome. An analysis of future trends in concrete fly ash application and possible alternatives for
regions that already lack in fly ash quantities are presented and discussed.

AB - Six simply supported reinforced concrete beams were tested under sustained loads for 450 days. The beams were made from natural aggregate concrete (NAC), recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) and high-volume fly ash concrete (HVFAC); two beams were made from each concrete and loaded after 7 and 28 days. On the beams, deflections, cracking and strains were measured while concrete specimens were used to determine physical-mechanical properties of concretes and measure shrinkage and creep. Results showed similar increases in deflections relative to initial deflections for all six beams. The results are also compared with code predictions and with existing results in literature.

AB - Code provisions for a simplified check of the long-term deflection of concrete structures are generally developed for predefined values of the relevant input parameters. Deflection calculation may be of interest to account for different design situations. EN 1992-1-1 advocates the integration of curvatures calculated using the effective modulus of concrete. This paper presents an efficient procedure for calculation of the long-term deflection due to a sustained load. A nondimensional analysis of the mean curvature is applied to evaluate the deflection. The deflection is calculated using a set of algebraic expressions. The result is close to the value obtained by the numerical integration of curvatures. The values of relevant parameters in the expressions may be selected within the common range for the design of engineering structures. The efficiency of the deflection prediction based on the integration of curvatures is tested on the available experimental data. In the first approach, the measured material properties are used. In the second approach, the required values are derived from EN 1992-1-1 expressions to predict the material properties.

AB - Eurocode 2 (EN 1992-1-1:2004) instructions for deflection control are discussed in the paper. Several problems arise with application of the span-to-depth limits. This procedure is not always applicable due to adopted pre-defined inputs and calculation of the deflections is necessary. The simplest procedure is to interpolate between deflections calculated using stiffness of the uncracked and the cracked member. This is an equivalent to the CEB bilinear method, but without explicit instruction for the interpolation coefficient. The most rigorous method of assessing deflections is based on the integration of the mean curvatures calculated at a number of cross sections along the member. This procedure may require additional adjustments in case of statically indeterminate structures.

AB - This paper presents a comparative analysis of embodied energy and CO2 emission, in the construction process of three bridge structures. Analyzed structures are prestressed concrete bridges with different structural systems and a total length of 88 meters. The correlation of structural system, construction method, material quantities and embodied energy and CO2 emission were considered. Influence of the selected solutions in main steps of design and construction on the energy consumption and the emission of CO2 is presented. The results should provide a better understanding of the effects of certain factors, in the bridge construction process, and their impact on the environment.

AB - Despite the extensive analytical and numerical research carried out in the last two decades on the long-term behaviour of continuous concrete beams composed of precast units, only limited number of experimental data is currently available in the literature. This paper presents an experimental study of the time-dependent behaviour of continuous concrete beams that has been carried out at the University of Belgrade. Two beams were made of precast reinforced elements with cast in situ upper part and continuity joint at middle support. Two cast in place continuous beams of same span and load were also tested. All beams were subjected to equal sustained load for a period over 4 years and deflections, strains and reactions were measured. Experimental program is described and the results are presented. The experiment was also analytically simulated. Analysis of this type of structure should incorporate effects of creep, shrinkage and cracking of concrete. Simplified procedure that involves the AAEM method and the bilinear approach is proposed for calculation of the restraint moment. Calculated values obtained using measured concrete properties are close to the experimental values. Experimental results presented in the paper offer data for calibration of more complex theoretical procedures.

AB - Development of design tools for reinforced concrete is not followed withconvenient procedures for the deflection check. Most of the software using finiteelement calculation does not support proper evaluation (including effects of cracking, creep and shrinkage) of the deflection of concrete structures. Use of high strengthmaterials enables reduction of the size of structural elements. As a result, structuresbecome more deformable and it is necessary to check deflection.Simplified and refined methods are usually presented by most of design codes orrecommendations for the deflection check. The simplified methods provide faster andeasier calculation. They are generally on the safe side and require enlarged dimensionsof structural elements. The refined methods involve relevant properties of concrete, environmental conditions and construction schedule, allowing for optimization of thesize of structural elements. Apart from not being suitable for hand calculation, theyoften require some additional knowledge.Eurocode 2 (EN 1992-1-1:2004) also provides two methods for the deflectioncheck. Simplified criterion is in a form of span-to-depth ratio limit. This tool has seriouslimits. It is not well prepared for practical use (it is derived for an unsuitable ratio of thequasi-permanent to the ultimate load; it also does not include the compressivereinforcement other then required for ULS). The second, rigorous method is based ongeneral approach for deflection calculation - integration of the curvatures along theelement. The effective modulus method is used for calculation of long-term effects dueto creep and shrinkage of concrete. Influence of concrete cracking to the stiffness isintroduced by interpolation coefficient according to CEB-FIP Model code 1990. Thismore refined method seems to be easy applicable due to lack of the very importantinstruction: bending moment diagram of the statically indeterminate structures, resultingfrom an ordinary ULS analysis based on concrete gross sections, should be redistributedto account for effects of cracking, creep and shrinkage. This option is not usuallysupported by common engineering software and task becomes heavy. Evaluation of theredistributed diagram requires a time-dependant stiffness matrix and an iterativecalculation following appearance of cracks...

AB - Research on the long-term behavior of composite concrete girders made continuous is presented in the paper. Concrete precast element is cracked under construction load. Creep and differential shrinkage of precast and in-situ cast part of the girder also induce stresses in a structure. The subject of this investigation is redistribution of section forces in course of time for concrete girders subjected to change of the structural system. The aim of investigation is to verify design models and analytical procedures by experimental research.
