AB - Population growth, consumerism and linear (take-make-dispose) economy models have been piling up waste for decades. The construction industry is also based primarily on linear economy models, but the good news is that most of the waste can be re-used or recycled. So far, numerous models for managing construction and demolition waste in a sustainable way have been developed, but only a few models have included circular economy approaches. The main objective of this study is to propose an integrated framework for the sustainability assessment of CDW management. Apart from the economic, environmental and social aspects of sustainability, this model also includes circular economy principles. The proposed framework is based on the integration of existing methods: bottom-up materials stock approximation; cost–benefit analysis for criteria calculation; and scenario and multi-criteria decision-making analysis for sustainability. It is suggested that the European average recovery rates should be used for future scenario development. With higher re-use and recycling rates, the potential for the circularity of the recovered waste grows. In an effort to increase circularity in the region, particular attention was devoted to customize the framework and examine its potential for use in the Western Balkan countries. The framework may also be useful in countries with immature construction and demolition waste management

AB - As governments worldwide attempt to develop sustainable waste management strategies, massive amounts of waste have been accumulating. However, developing an effective waste management strategy requires a thorough understanding of waste types and quantites. The existing efforts to identify waste flows in the built environment are unsuitable for countries with non-reliable statistics as they mostly use location-specific parameters such as data on construction, renovation, demolition activity, and generation rates from the literature. The types and quantities of materials embedded are rarely considered. This study aims to fill the identified gap by estimating the quantities of different material types embedded in Serbian residential building stock. It will do so by calculating the volume and weights of building elements and their materials using information from a detailed building stock typology. The results show that the amounts of materials embedded vary significantly from district to district, ranging from 10 in Toplička District to 96.9 million tons in Belgrade. The mineral materials are the highest contributors to the material embedded, implying that future waste management strategies should focus on them. Apart from the formulation of location-specific circular economy and waste management strategies, these results may be useful for planning energy efficiency retrofitting activities, deconstruction and reversible design strategies.

AB - The main aim of this study was to investigate the application of benthic diatoms and the efficiency of diatom indices in water ecological assessment of rivers in Serbia, as well as the influence of trout farms on rivers water quality. Research was conducted in one year period along the Crnica and Radovanska rivers (Eastern Serbia), in 11 sampling sites (taking into account the position of trout fish farms that are built on both rivers). Results showed that fish farms affect the physical and chemical parameters, as well as diversity of the epilithic diatom assemblage along the rivers. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicated that among tested physical and chemical parameters, conductivity “EC”, water hardness “WH”, sulfates “SO42-”, ionized ammonia fraction “NH4+”, nitrates “NO3–“, “pH”, mud, stone and depth were the most important variables affecting the distribution of diatom species. A total of 206 epilithic diatom taxa were recorded in the Radovanska and 170 in the Crnica River. Based on diatom indices, trout fish farms have no significant negative impact on the water quality of the investigated rivers (indices are not enough sensitive). Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed a high degree of correlation between the majority of indices which mostly indicated to good water quality of studied rivers. TID and TDI were the only two indices indicating moderate and poor water quality of both rivers. Water quality based on the TIDRS, the first proposed diatom index for Serbia was differ in two classes in most sites compairing with TID.

Water quality based on the TIDRS, the first proposed diatom index for Serbia was differ in two classes in most sites compairing with TID.",

AB - The present study deals with the abundance of the most common accessory elements of radioactivity carriers on the Stara Planina mountain at four defined locations. All investigated locations have increased radioactivity, greater than 200 cps, up to 1250 cps. In all examined samples the following elements were detected and their concentrations were determined: Zr, Rb, W, Mo, Sn, Zn, Cu, As, Sb, Ba, Ni, Cr, V, and Ti. The analysis showed that depending on the sample, elevated concentrations of all detected elements except titanium were found. As all localities containing the listed detected elements are located near watercourses, all the present elements, and in particular, those with elevated concentrations can be relatively easily transferred to the environment by water action. Likewise, there is the possibility of eolic erosion from the investigated deposits and tailing dams whereby these chemical elements and/or radionuclides would be distributed to areas away from the primary sources of natural radioactivity. These have a high risk of spreading and therefore have harmful or radioecological effects on the environment. The study indicated a need for adequate monitoring, and risk assessment of the examined locations, which could prevent the distribution of these elements further into the environment.

AB - This paper presents the results of the investigation of pollutant build-up on impervious surfaces of a parking lot in Belgrade, Serbia during the summer months. Contaminant build-up was found to be greater on asphalt surfaces directly exposed to vehicular traffic than on concrete walkways. The difference in the amounts of accumulated pollutants between asphalt and concrete were significant: for total solids (TS), total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), heavy metals and total phosphorus (TP) accumulations were two to three times higher, while only 30% higher for total nitrogen (TN) and anions. Build-up of most of the measured parameters was best described by power functions. The highest surface loads were found for solids, COD, iron and zinc. A strong correlation was found between turbidity, TS, TSS, COD, heavy metals and phosphorus, while conductivity, nitrates and nitrites were weakly correlated to other parameters.

AB - Global population is growing rapidly. As a result, increasingly large areas are being settled and farmed. This devastates soils and causes pollution by heavy metals and other components. Heavy metals in the environment originate from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Natural sources generally include rock weathering and the propagation of heavy metals, such as Cr and Ni, from ultrabasic rocks. These are natural processes that generally do not threaten human health. Anthropogenic sources include industry and inappropriate disposal of waste in the environment. In such cases concentrations of heavy metals can be harmful to people and other living beings. Al Zintan is a city located in northwestern Libya, on a plateau mainly built up of Cretaceous sediments. Since the 1980’s, nomadic population has rapidly been settling this area. As a result, a former part of the desert was transformed and is used for farming. Soil sampling at Al Zintan was conducted in 2017, across a 2×2 km grid. A total of 143 samples were collected from depths of about 30 cm. The samples weighed 2 to 2.5 kg and generally comprised sand with a clay component. A Niton Xl3t goldd+ instrument was used for chemical analyses, based on which GIS heavy-metal distribution maps were generated. The distribution of Cr, Ni, Cu and Zn is discussed on the paper.

AB - Stara Planina (also known as the Balkan mountain range) is known for numerous occurrences and deposits of uranium and associated radionuclides. It is also famous for its geodiversity. The geologic framework is highly complex. The mountain is situated between the latitudes of 43 degrees and 44 degrees N and the longitudes from 22 degrees 16' to 23 degrees 00' E. Uranium exploration and radioactivity testing on Stara Planina began back in 1948. Uranium has also been mined in the zone of Kalna, within the Janja granite intrusive. The naturally radioactive geologic units of Stara Planina are presented in detail in this paper. The main sources of radioactivity on Stara Planina can be classified as: 1. Granitic endogenous-syngenetic-epigenetic deposits and occurrences; 2. Metamorphogenic-syngenetic; and 3. Sedimentary, including occurrences of uranium deposition and fluctuation caused by water in different types of sedimentary rocks formed in a continental setting, which could be classified under epigenetic types. The area of Stara Planina with increased radioactivity (higher than 200 cps), measured by airborne gamma spectrometry, is about 380 square kilometers. The highest values of measured radioactivity and uranium grade were obtained from a sample taken from the Mezdreja uranium mine tailing dump, where Ra-226 measures 2600 +/- 100 Bq/kg and the uranium grade is from 76.54 to 77.65 ppm U. The highest uranium (and lead) concentration, among all samples, is measured in graphitic schist with high concentrations of organic (graphitic) material from the Inovska Series-99.47 ppm U and 107.69 ppm Pb. Thorium related radioactivity is the highest in granite samples from the Janja granite in the vicinity of the Mezdreja granite mine and the Gabrovnica granite mine tailing dump, and it is the same-250 +/- 10 Bq/kg for Th-232, while the thorium grade varies from 30.82 to 60.27 ppm Th. In gray siltstones with a small amount of organic material, the highest radioactivity is related to potassium-2080 +/- 90 Bq/kg for K-40.

AB - Metal content was evaluated in the sediment, macrophytes and fish in the Medjuvrtje reservoir (Western Serbia). Concentrations of 16 trace elements (Ag; Al; As; B; Ba; Cd; Co; Cr; Cu; Fe; Li; Mn; Ni; Pb; Sr; Zn) were analysed in the sediment, macrophytes and fish of an aquatic ecosystem. Five macrophyte species and three fish tissues (liver, muscle, gills) from five fish species (freshwater bream, common nase, Prussian carp, chub, wels catfish) were sampled and the metal content was analysed with ICP-OES. The sediment concentrations of Cu, Cd, and Zn exceeded the Canadian sediment quality guidelines while concentrations of Cr and Ni were above the Netherlands' target values. Bioaccumulation factors (BSAF) were calculated for analysed macrophytes and fish tissue. The BSAF had higher values for macrophytes for all investigated elements except for Cu and Zn; Cu had a higher value in the liver of the freshwater bream (0.823) and Zn had a higher value in the liver of freshwater bream (0.914) and chub (0.834) as well as in gills of Prussian carp (2.58) and chub (1.26). Potamogeton pectinatus, Ceratophylum demersum and the root of Phragmites communis showed higher accumulation of elements than Trapa natans and Potamogeton fluitans and the body of P. communis. The highest BSAF values for Ba, Mn, Sr and Ni were recorded in the gills. Cd and Cu had the highest BSAF values in the liver. Results confirmed that particular macrophyte and fish species could be a good indicator of reservoir water and sediment pollution.

The highest BSAF values for Ba, Mn, Sr and Ni were recorded in the gills. Cd and Cu had the highest BSAF values in the liver. Results confirmed that particular macrophyte and fish species could be a good indicator of reservoir water and sediment pollution.",

AB - Metropolitan areas are large consumers of energy and there is a growing need to broaden the urban sustainable energy diapason and increase the share of renewable and sustainable energy in overall energy consumption. This is especially important in countries such as Serbia that have limited domestic fossil fuel resources and rely on energy imports, from the environmental, financial and energy security points of view. In the Serbian capital of Belgrade electricity is produced in coal-fired power plants that have been shown to be vulnerable to flooding and the district heating system is reliant on imported natural gas. The objective of this work was to perform a feasibility study of a combined heat and power municipal solid waste mass burn incineration facility in Belgrade. The feasibility study included a financial and an economic analysis. The City of Belgrade has a developed district heating system and locating the incineration facility next to an existing heating plant would enable the utilization of the heat energy produced by incineration and substitution of a portion of the imported natural gas currently used for district heating. The contributions of energy derived froth waste incineration to the total energy consumption in Belgrade were also evaluated. The feasibility study showed that municipal solid waste incineration would be financially and economically positive and viable.

AB - The effects of physical factors on fish catch in the Serbian part of the Danube River were studied for period of six decades. The data on total catch for the Danube River from river kilometre 845 to river kilometre 1433 were collected from Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, while water level and water temperature data were collected from 16 water gauge stations along the investigated part of the Danube River for the period 1948-2009. Cross-correlation functions have been used to analyse the functional connection between Danube water level, water temperature and fish catch while ARMA model which combines cyclic (deterministic) and random (stochastic) components of the analysed sequences was used for the forecasts. The cross-correlation function showed negative correlation between water level and temperature as well as between water temperature and catch and positive correlation between water level and catch. The Danube water level and catch were coherent at the periods of 2.06, 4.13, 6.2, 10.33, 20.66 years, while the cross correlation function between these time series did not show phase lag. The results of reconstruction and forecast of water level, temperature, and catch of fish in the Danube River, obtained by summing the cyclic and stochastic components, was used for the forecast till 2029. In 2016, seven years after, the initial forecasts were made, validity of the model was checked by obtaining data for water temperature, water level and fish catch in the Danube River for the period 2010-2015. Model gave the best prediction for water temperature; average standard error was 1.6 times higher for predicted value than for model value while for fish catch and water level they were 1.96 and 4.97, respectively. Methods used in this work could be powerful tool for prediction of fish catch and serve as the basis for better fisheries management.

AB - Various particles and materials, including pollutants, deposited on urban surfaces are washed off by stormwater runoff during rain events. The interactions between the solid and dissolved compounds in stormwater runoff are phenomena of importance for the selection and improvement of optimal stormwater management practices aimed at minimizing pollutant input to receiving waters. The objective of this research was to further investigate the mechanisms responsible for the partitioning of heavy metals (HM) between the solid and liquid phases in urban stormwater runoff. The research involved the collection of samples from urban asphalt surfaces, chemical characterization of the bulk liquid samples, solids separation, particle size distribution fractionation and chemical and physicochemical characterization of the solid phase particles. The results revealed that a negligible fraction of HM was present in the liquid phase (less than 3% by weight), while there was a strong correlation between the total content of heavy metals and total suspended solids. Examinations of surface morphology and mineralogy revealed that the solid phase particles consist predominantly of natural macroporous materials: alpha quartz (80%), magnetite (11.4%) and silicon diphosphate (8.9%). These materials have a low surface area and do not have significant adsorptive capacity. These materials have a low surface area and do not have significant adsorptive capacity. The presence of HM on the surface of solid particles was not confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray microanalyses. These findings, along with the results of the liquid phase sample characterization, indicate that the partitioning of HM between the liquid and solid phases in the analyzed samples may be attributed to precipitation processes.

AB - Purpose
The City of Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, is in the project preparation phase for a publicprivate
partnership (PPP) project for the provision of services of treatment and disposal of
residual municipal solid waste (MSW), including the construction and operation of a waste to
energy (WtE) facility. The objective of this work was to perform a social cost-benefit
analysis (CBA) for a combined heat and power municipal solid waste mass burn incineration
facility in Belgrade.
Methods
A financial and an economic analysis were conducted for the proposed WtE facility. The
contributions of energy derived from waste incineration to the total energy consumption in
Belgrade were also evaluated.
Results
Belgrade has a developed district heating system and locating the WtE facility next to an
existing thermal power plant would enable the utilization of the heat energy produced by
incineration. It was estimated that in its first year of operation, the incinerator would produce
electrical energy and heat in the equivalent of 6% of the electrical household demand in 2014
and 26% of the thermal energy delivered during the 2014/2015 heating season in Belgrade.
The financial and economic analyses, done in the form of a CBA, showed that the project
would be financially and economically positive and viable.
Results
The Belgrade WtE facility project is a first-of-its-kind in the region. The presented work
could serve as a primer on conducting a WtE project sustainability analysis for other cities
and urban areas in the region that do not have developed WtE systems.

Analysing and comparing environmental, technological, economic and socio-political factors, while having in mind all stakeholders views, seems impossible unless supported with a formal decision making framework, which would facilitate understanding of all processes and influential factors related to decision making, including all criteria's and confronting interests which are specific to the available alternatives for a problem solution. Having in mind importance of efficient and objective decision making process, the paper gives general description of the MCDA methods used, and through a case study of landfill site selection process elaborates possible MCDA methods application in a waste management problems. Case study use a real data from a Central Eastern part of Macedonia and provide step by step example of using the AHP method as a tool of choice. Results clearly indicate that AHP can provide proper decision making support, allowing optimal solution selection through inclusion of different and otherwise incomparable criterions like the environmental (flora, fauna, visual aspects, cultural heritage...), technical (geological setting, hydrology, odours, accidents...), planning (location compared to the current land usage, infrastructure, future land usage...) and economic criteria's (investment and operational costs).

AB - The genus Physa (= Physella) includes the most abundant and diverse freshwater gastropods native to North America. Due to their invasive nature, many species occur throughout the world. The most abundant species, Physa acuta, has been introduced to Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia by human commerce and migrating birds. This species is widely distributed throughout Serbia. The aim of this study was to explore the genetic diversity of P. acuta from Serbia, and to determine the evolutionary relationships among native Physidae populations from North America, Mexico and Cuba and populations from Europe, using sequences of the mitochondrial 16S rDNA gene. The ML (Maximum Likelihood) tree revealed two clades within Physidae, and two clades that correspond to the families Planorbidae and Lymnaeidae. In the Physidae clade there are two separate clades: one includes the species Physa spelunca, and the second includes samples of P. acuta. We determined three different haplotypes within specimens from Serbia. One haplotype is genetically closest to Physa heterostrofa (synonym of P. acuta) from Philadelphia, while the other two are very close to P. acuta specimens from New Mexico. Together with other samples, our findings corroborate the notion that we are dealing with one panmictic population of P. acuta and not with several separate species, despite the high genetic diversity between and among the populations. Our results indicate that in the same population in Serbia, there is high genetic distance between samples. Despite the small number of analyzed samples, our findings point to multiple introductions of P. acuta from different locations in America.

AB - This paper presents the results of experimental investigations on contaminant buildup, distribution and dynamics on asphalt surfaces of parking lot in Belgrade, Serbia. The investigated pollutants were solids, nutrients, oils and grease, chlorides, sulphates and heavy metals. Contaminant buildup was found to be highly influenced by traffic intensity and local climate conditions. The highest surface loads were found for solids, chemical oxygen demand, iron and zinc. Pearson's correlation revealed a strong correlation between total suspended solids, heavy metals and phosphorus, but settleable solids, oils and grease, total nitrogen, biochemical oxygen demand and chlorides are weakly correlated to other contaminants. Bonding of contaminants to the solid phase of the urban runoff was examined and results show that much higher concentrations were associated with finer fractions. The parking lot contaminant spatial distribution results for the examined sites were largely scattered and did not follow any particular pattern.
