AB  - This paper presents a methodology for estimation of hydrodynamic loads acting on the bottom and at the walls of a stilling basin of a stepped chute with converging walls, based on the pressure measurements at the selected points of a scale model. This is the first study of hydrodynamic loads for this type of structure, and the first one of the loads on the stilling basin walls in general. For selected flow discharges, step heights and hydraulic jump submergence ratio, the hydrodynamic pressures were measured at a significant number of points, providing the spatio-temporal distribution of relevant hydrodynamic loads. The most influential effect proved to be a convergence angle of the chute walls. Based on these measurements, appropriate regression expressions were proposed for predicting hydrodynamic loads. These expressions show good agreement with measurements, offering a reliable tool for the structural design of stepped spillway stilling basins.

AB  - This article presents a taxonomy and represents a repository of open problems in computing for numerically and logically intensive problems in a number of disciplines that have to synergize for the best performance of simulation-based feasibility studies on nature-oriented engineering in general and civil engineering in particular. Topics include but are not limited to: Nature-based construction, genomics supporting nature-based construction, earthquake engineering, and other types of geophysical disaster prevention activities, as well as the studies of processes and materials of interest for the above. In all these fields, problems are discussed that generate huge amounts of Big Data and are characterized with mathematically highly complex Iterative Algorithms. In the domain of applications, it has been stressed that problems could be made less computationally demanding if the number of computing iterations is made smaller (with the help of Artificial Intelligence or Conditional Algorithms), or if each computing iteration is made shorter in time (with the help of Data Filtration and Data Quantization). In the domain of computing, it has been stressed that computing could be made more powerful if the implementation technology is changed (Si, GaAs, etc.…), or if the computing paradigm is changed (Control Flow, Data Flow, etc.…).

AB  - This article describes a teaching strategy that synergizes computing and management, aimed at the running of complex projects in industry and academia, in the areas of civil engineering, physics, geosciences, and a number of other related fields. The course derived from this strategy includes four parts: (a) Computing with a selected set of modern paradigms—the stress is on Control Flow and Data Flow computing paradigms, but paradigms conditionally referred to as Energy Flow and Diffusion Flow are also covered; (b) Project management that is holistic—the stress is on the wide plethora of issues spanning from the preparation of project proposals, all the way to incorporation activities to follow after the completion of a successful project; (c) Examples from past research and development experiences—the stress is on experiences of leading experts from academia and industry; (d) Student projects that stimulate creativity—the stress is on methods that educators could use to induce and accelerate the creativity of students in general. Finally, the article ends with selected pearls of wisdom that could be treated as suggestions for further elaboration.

Летећи пепео - карактеризација и примена у хидротехници

AB  - Летећи пепео (ЛП) је нуспроизвод сагоревања чврстих горива. У уводном делу рада дат је осврт на настанак (порекло), хемијски састав и класификацију летећег пепела. ЛП je прашкаста, чврста супстанца чији хемијски састав чини несагорели угљеник, метални оксиди (Si, Fe, Ca и Al) и друге неорганске супстанце. Структурна анализа сировог и модификованог узорка ЛП даје смернице ка потенцијалној промени ЛП. У другом делу рада наведене су и описане области примене ЛП. Примена ЛП налази своје место: у синтези зеолита, у индустрији керамике, у пречишћавању отпадних вода, у сорпционим материјалима. Летећи пепео има потенцијалну примену за  побољшање деградираног земљишта, а. користи се и као замена за сировину у грађевинској индустрији или као адитив у индустрији цемента. Летећи пепео је, због повољних геомеханичких и геотехничких карактеристика, нашао примену и у изградњи насипа. Такође, летећи пепео се користи за изградњу брана од ваљаног бетона. У Србији се данас ЛП користи за ободне насипе на депонијама 
пепела.
AB  - Fly ash (FА) is a by-product of solid fuels burning. In the introductory part of the paper, an overview of the origin, chemical composition and classification of fly ash is given. FА is a powdery, solid substance whose chemical composition consists of unburnt carbon, metal oxides (Si, Fe, Ca and Al) and other inorganic substances. Structural analysis of the raw and modified FА sample provides guidance towards potential FА change. In the second part of the paper, the areas of FА application are listed and described. The application of fly ash finds its place: in the synthesis of zeolites, in the ceramics industry, in the purification of wastewater and in sorption materials. Fly ash has potential applications for improving degraded soils. Fly ash is used as a substitute for raw material in the construction industry or as an additive in the cement industry. Due to favourable geomechanical and geotechnical characteristics, FA has also found application in the construction 
of embankments. Fly ash is also used for Roller Compacted Concrete Dams. In Serbia, FA is used for containment embankments at ash impoundments of Thermal Power Plants.

Летећи пепео има потенцијалну примену за  побољшање деградираног земљишта, а. користи се и као замена за сировину у грађевинској индустрији или као адитив у индустрији цемента. Летећи пепео је, због повољних геомеханичких и геотехничких карактеристика, нашао примену и у изградњи насипа. Такође, летећи пепео се користи за изградњу брана од ваљаног бетона. У Србији се данас ЛП користи за ободне насипе на депонијама 
пепела., Fly ash (FА) is a by-product of solid fuels burning. In the introductory part of the paper, an overview of the origin, chemical composition and classification of fly ash is given. FА is a powdery, solid substance whose chemical composition consists of unburnt carbon, metal oxides (Si, Fe, Ca and Al) and other inorganic substances. Structural analysis of the raw and modified FА sample provides guidance towards potential FА change. In the second part of the paper, the areas of FА application are listed and described. The application of fly ash finds its place: in the synthesis of zeolites, in the ceramics industry, in the purification of wastewater and in sorption materials. Fly ash has potential applications for improving degraded soils. Fly ash is used as a substitute for raw material in the construction industry or as an additive in the cement industry. Due to favourable geomechanical and geotechnical characteristics, FA has also found application in the construction 
of embankments. Fly ash is also used for Roller Compacted Concrete Dams. In Serbia, FA is used for containment embankments at ash impoundments of Thermal Power Plants.",

Long-Term Thermal Stress Analysis and Optimization of Contraction Joint Distance of Concrete Gravity Dams

AB  - Results of the conducted research aiming to demonstrate the methodology of optimization of dam monolith length (distance between contraction joints), through monitoring the thermal tensile stresses during construction and service life of a concrete gravity dam that is built using the block method, are presented in this paper. A 3D space–time numerical model for phased thermal stress analysis is employed in a large concrete gravity dam case study. For the adopted block dimensions, schedule, and dynamics of construction and material parameters, the thermal stress analysis is conducted, taking into account the following: thermal physical properties of the material, the cement hydration process, heat exchange with the external environment and the reservoir, and self-weight of the structure. The main advantage of the proposed methodology is the possibility of controlling the cracks resulting from thermal tensile stresses in the monolith of a concrete gravity dam, by optimizing the monolith’s length to minimize the zones in which the tensile capacity of concrete is exceeded. The results obtained from the temperature field analysis show that the maximum temperature increase in the dam’s body results from the cement hydration process in combination with summer air temperatures in the construction phase. The aforementioned factors account for the increase in temperature of up to 45.0 ◦C, while during winter cooling of the structure occurs due to lower temperatures, especially in the surface zones. The results of the stress field analysis show that the extreme values of thermal tensile stresses are present in the process of a sudden or gradual cooling of the concrete when shrinkage occurs. Finally, it is shown that the reduction of the monolith length by 5.0 m (from 20.0 m to 15.0 m) results in a decrease in the extreme thermal tensile stress values by an average of 0.70 MPa (up to 12.0%) in winter and an average of 1.10 MPa (up to 20.0%) in summer; while for the entirety of the analyzed time period, results in a decrease in the extreme thermal tensile stress values by an average of 16.0% (0.93 MPa).

Termičko ponašanje gravitacionih betonskih brana presudno zavisi od početnih i graničnih uslova, karakteristika mešavine i dimenzija blokova. U radu je prikazan prostorni numerički model za faznu tеrmičku analizu visoke gravitacionе bеtonskе branе. Za usvojеnе dimеnzijе blokova, rеdoslеd bеtoniranja i dinamiku građеnja određivano je tеmpеraturno poljе, uzimajući u obzir toplotu hidratacije betona i sadеjstvujuću stеnsku masu. Na osnovu dobijenih rezultata, dati su zaključci i preporuke za proračun temperaturnog polja kod gravitacionih betonskih brana.

The thermal behavior of concrete gravity dams crucially depends on the initial and boundary conditions, the characteristics of the mixture and the dimensions of the blocks. This paper presents numerical model for transient thermal analysis of a high concrete gravity dam. The temperature field was determined for the predefined dimensions of the blocks and placement schedule, taking into account hydration heat and the surrounding rock mass. Based on the obtained results, conclusions and recommendations for concrete gravity dams thermal analysis are given.

AB  - This paper analyzes the problems of flood control for the tailings-dams reservoirs, having in mind the significant rise of the flow and volume of observed flood waves, and increasingly stringent criteria for safety of high dams. Therefore, it is necessary to revise hydrological data and adopt the updated design criteria. The existing flood control facilities are investigated for the case of the tailings reservoir 'Rudnik', indicating a serious lack of capacity. The possibility of reconstruction of the existing structures, as well as various variants of new flood control facilities are considered. For evaluation of proposed variants, all the relevant aspects are taken into account, and a multi-criteria optimization is performed. The most important criteria are: the dam-safety during the entire period of exploitation, the costs, the available reservoir storage capacity, the capability of efficient phase construction, construction duration, the maintenance and operation conditions, and the value of the outflow discharge. As the most effective solutions have been proposed Variant 1 with the Channel spillway, and Variant 2 with Drop inlet spillway. Preference is given to Variant 1, primarily due to higher safety of the channel spillway.
AB  - U ovom radu analizirani su problemi evakuacije velikih voda iz jalovišnih akumulacija, s obzirom na značajno povećanje proticaja i zapremine talasa merodavnih velikih voda i sve strožije kriterijume sigurnosti visokih brana. Zbog toga je neophodno osavremeniti hidrološke podloge i usvojiti odgovarajuće projektne kriterijume. Na primeru jalovišne akumulacije "Rudnik" analiziran je kapacitet postojećih objekata za evakuaciju velikih voda i pokazan ozbiljan nedostatak propusne moći. Razmatrane su mogućnosti rekonstrukcije postojećeg objekta, kao i razne varijante novih - dodatnih evakuacionih objekata. Prilikom vrednovanja predloženih rešenja uzeti su u obzir svi bitni aspekti, odnosno izvršena je višekriterijumska optimizacija. Najvažniji kriterijumi su: sigurnost brane tokom celog toka ekspolatacije, investiciona vrednost radova, raspoloživa zapremina akumulacije, mogućnost efikasnog faznog izvođenja, trajanje radova, uslovi eksploatacije i održavanja i vrednost izlaznog protoka. Kao najefikasnija rešenja predložene su Varijanta 1 sa Čeonim prelivom i brzotokom i Varijanta 2 sa Modifikovanim šahtnim prelivom, kolektorom i brzotokom. Prednost je data Varijanti 1 pre svega zbog veće sigurnosti rešenja sa čeonim prelivom i brzotokom.

AB  - Zangar's method for computation of seismic hydrodynamic loads acting at the inclined contour of a concrete gravity dam, has been reconsidered. Several numerical models are compared with the procedure recommended by Zangar, and a new regression formula is proposed, that eliminates the observed discrepancies.
AB  - Analizirana je Zangarova metoda za proračun seizmičkih hidrodinamičkih opterećenja na vertikalnu i kosu konturu betonske gravitacione brane. Uočena su znatna odstupanja konvencionalnog Zangarovog postupka od tačnog rešenja dobijenog analitičkom integracijom Zangarovih eksperimentalnih krivih. Predloženi su jenostavni regresioni izrazi za proračun seizmičke sile i momenata savijanja, koji veoma dobro aproksimiraju analitičko rešenje.

AB  - In this paper, the data for the observed temperatures (of the air, body of the dam and water in the reservoir), for "Bajina Bašta" Dam, during the 20-years period, are presented. The data were used to predict the unsteady temperature field in the reservoir, based on the Bofang model for analytical ralationship between the temperature, time and reservoir depth. Obtained temperature diagrams present a usefull tool for assesing the thermal-stress field and the safety of the dam.

AB  - Sensitivity of the hydrodynamic-load measurements on physical models depending on the sampling frequency and duration is considered. The hydrodynamicload data were obtained from the stilling basin physical models at the hydraulic laboratories of "Jaroslav Cerni" Water Resources Institute, and Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Belgrade. Based on the results of this research, an optimization strategy for the future experiments is proposed.

AB  - Sixty years after the construction of HPP Zvornik, revitalization of the agregate A1 began. An increase in the installed capacity is provided by the water flow rate rise and the replacement of turbine generators. To make this possible, it is necessary to modify the geometry of the tube cone below the unit. Civil engineering part of the reconstruction works includes: dismantling of the existing steel tube cone lining, removal of the surrounding secondary concrete, assembling the new steel draft tube cone and connecting it with the existing dam concrete structure.

AB  - This paper presents the determination of the geotechnical conditions for repair of steam boiler shallow foundation in the boiler room of the factory "Galenika", Zemun, due to the differential foundation settlements. The analysis of the causes of the problem, the program and the results of field and laboratory geotechnical testings, as well as the repair solution, are presented.
AB  - U radu je prikazano određivanje geotehničkih uslova sanacije plitkog temelja parnog kotla u kotlarnici fabrike Galenika u Zemunu usled pojave neravnomernih sleganja. Opisana je analiza uzroka problema, program i rezultati terenskih i laboratorijskih ispitivanja i usvojeno rešenje sanacije.

Thermal-stress behaviour of RCC gravity dams

AB  - Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) is a special concrete mixture with low cement content, frequently used for concrete gravity dams. This paper deals with the 3D finite element model for unsteady phased thermal-stress analysis of RCC dams. Model calibration and verification has been done, based on the in-situ measurements of the Platanovryssi dam. The study has been done using the actual dam shape, RCC time schedule, and material properties. The results prove that the recommended 3D model enables a reliable thermal-stress prediction and transversal joint distance computation for an RCC gravity dam.
AB  - Beton zbijen valjanjem ('valjani beton' ili 'RCC' - Roller Compacted Concrete) je vrsta betona sa niskim sadržajem cementa koja se često koristi kod betonskih gravitacionih brana. U radu je razmatran prostorni model za neustaljenu faznu termičko- naponsku analizu brana od valjanog betona. Kalibracija i verifikacija modela uređeni su na osnovu terenskih merenja na brani Platanovrisi. Istraživanje je urađeno uzimajući u obzir stvarnu geometriju brane, dinamiku ugradnje RCC-a i stvarne osobine materijala. Rezultati proračuna pokazuju da razvijeni 3D model omogućava pouzdano predviđanje termičkih napona i određivanje rastojanja između razdelnica kod gravitacionih RCC brana.

AB  - This paper analyzes the hydrodynamic loads acting on the bottom and walls of a stilling basin, based on the pressure measurements at the selected points of a scale model. For different degrees of the hydraulic jump immersion, the hydrodinamic preassures were measured at a large number of points, provideing the reliable distribution of hydrodynamic loads.

AB  - A new approach in 3D numerical modeling for unsteady phased thermal-stress analysis of a massive concrete hydraulic structure is presented. The temperature field is computed first, providing a drive for the unsteady, nonlinear, viscoelastic, stress-strain analysis. This model is devised with actual initial and boundary conditions, appropriate material properties, and the observed concrete placement schedule. The verification is based on the field investigations of the Platanovryssi dam. The results of a long-term analysis have shown close agreement with the observed dam conditions. The proposed model presents a reliable tool for thermal-stress computation and transverse contraction joint distance evaluation.

AB  - Hydraulic design of shaft spillways (morning-glory spillways) with flow deflector before the vertical bend is considered. Based on the physical hydraulic model investigations of several structures and available experience of other authors, the key features, concerning capacity of the spillway, vertical shaft and tunnel-flow are defined and discussed. New expressions for discharge and velocity coefficients have been proposed, and some of the old ones improved. AB  - Razmatrano je hidrauličko dimenzionisanje šahtnog preliva sa deflektorom ispred vertikalne krivine. Na osnovu hidrauličkih modelskih ispitivanja nekoliko objekata, kao i iskustva drugih autora, procenjeni su ključni činioci koji određuju propusnu sposobnost prelivnog, šahtnog i tunelskog dela objekta. Predloženi su novi i poboljšani raniji izrazi za procenu koeficijenata prelivanja, isticanja na deflektoru i koeficijenta brzine. Takođe, prikazan je i postupak za oblikovanje šahta, uključujući prelaznu deonicu između preliva i šahta. Na kraju se daje sažet algoritam celog postupka dimenzionisanja objekta.
