AB - This paper presents a methodology for estimation of hydrodynamic loads acting on the bottom and at the walls of a stilling basin of a stepped chute with converging walls, based on the pressure measurements at the selected points of a scale model. This is the first study of hydrodynamic loads for this type of structure, and the first one of the loads on the stilling basin walls in general. For selected flow discharges, step heights and hydraulic jump submergence ratio, the hydrodynamic pressures were measured at a significant number of points, providing the spatio-temporal distribution of relevant hydrodynamic loads. The most influential effect proved to be a convergence angle of the chute walls. Based on these measurements, appropriate regression expressions were proposed for predicting hydrodynamic loads. These expressions show good agreement with measurements, offering a reliable tool for the structural design of stepped spillway stilling basins.

AB - The benchmarking test of 2D and 3D numerical models on a compound channel flow with a rectangular-shaped main channel and a rectangular-shaped floodplain was carried out by the IAHR Working Group on Compound Channels. The selected test case is the flume experiment by Nezu and Tominaga (1991). Nine depth-averaged 2D models and four 3D models participated in the benchmark. In the 2D models, the depth-averaged streamwise velocity profiles in the lateral direction were compared. In the 3D models, velocity components in three directions as well as the distribution of the turbulence kinetic energy in a cross-section were compared. Through the comparison, the applicability and limitations of each model are highlighted and discussed with regard to the model characteristics.

Enlagement of existing Bor mines flotation tailing landfields at Veliki Krivelj site leads to inevitable structure collapse of the Kriveljska river tunnel derivation, since that the tunnel lies on the landfield invert. This report depicts final design of the new tunnel derivation traced out of the landfill. Characteristics of the tunnel, diversion dam at the tunnel intake and its safety spillway are presented. The tunnel design, along with other structures design and management decisions, enables future techological integrity of copper and trace metals production in Bor municipality.

AB - This work is a continuation of works by Goda et al. (2007) and Tamás et al. (2021) that were prompted by the drying of floodplains and problems in the water supply of irrigation and drainage canal networks in the whole middle Danube region. Previous works focused on hydrology and showed a constant lowering of water levels, which indicated the deepening of the riverbed. In the present study, the relationship between indicators of morphological changes and the decrease in low water levels at gauging stations (GS) is sought. At this stage, results confirm a continuous deepening of the riverbed. Despite smaller correlation coefficient values between low water levels (Zmin) and percentage increase in the cross-sectional areas in the sand bed part of the investigated reach, the linear decreasing trend in Zmin is evident.

AB - U velikom broju vodovodnih sistema, naročito u zemlјama u razvoju, podaci o elementima sistema, merenja protoka i potrošnje vode imaju veliku neodređenost. Podaci velike neodređenosti mogu da navedu na pogrešne zaklјučke i samim tim dovedu do pogrešnih upravlјačkih odluka.

AB - Selection of the optimal method for the removal of heavy metals remains a scientific challenge in terms of efficiency, cost-effectiveness and preservation of environment. In this paper, the aim of the study was to remove the zinc ions (Zn2+) from a sample of real waste water from galvanizing plant. Method of electrocoagulation (EC), which is based on the separation of the solid phase, formed by the presence of dissolved ions from inserted electrode, has been tested and applied within this research. Based on the results obtained by electrocoagulation, it can be concluded that the method is efficient and can quickly remove zinc ions from solution. The optimal removal was achieved when concentration of Zn2+ ions was reduced from 46.9 to 1.89 mg/L, after 10 minutes of laboratory EC.

AB - Accurate estimation of design floods is one of the most important tasks of applied hydrology, since design of hydraulic structures and flood protection measures heavily depends on these estimates. In hydrologically gauged catchments these estimates are usually obtained by applying frequency analyses over a series of annual maxima. In case of ungauged catchments, design floods are commonly estimated by applying an event-based rainfall-runoff models with design rainfall hyetographs (hereafter referred to as models). Although the design flood estimates obtained in this way are rather sensitive to every element of these models (e.g., design rainfall duration or unit hydrograph method), there is no specific guidance on the modelling decisions to obtain reliable design flood estimates. Robustness of a particular model is evaluated in gauged catchments (where observed data are available), by comparing design floods obtained with the model, to the results of the frequency analysis. The agreement between the two design flood estimates is usually quantified in terms of relative errors, which do not take into account uncertainty in the quantiles. In this paper, we propose a complementary approach to evaluation of event-based models, which implies that design flood estimates are compared to the confidence intervals of the quantiles. This approach is applied to nine models used to simulate design floods of 20-, 50- and 100-year return periods at the location of Zavlaka stream gauge on the Jadar River. The results show that taking quantile confidence intervals into consideration can provide additional insights in model performance, and, thus, should be mandatorily included in the model evaluation. Comparison across the models reveals considerable sensitivity of the design flood estimates to the models. Models that use daily design rainfall of uniform intensity systematically underestimate corresponding quantiles, while the estimates obtained with shorter rainfall durations or with rainfall of non-uniform intensities result in errors of both signs. Equifinality between the curve number and rainfall duration is also detected in the results. This study exposes challenges in evaluating event-based models, and emphasises the need for specific guidance on the application of these models for design flood estimation.

AB - A methodology that was developed to provide rigorous mathematical description of spatially heterogeneous flows (multiphase flows, ground water flows or flows over rough beds) and related processes is presented in this paper. This is the double averaging methodology (DAM) in which Navier-Stokes equations are successively averaged in time and space. The DAM emergence and the development are traced back through the historical review. The review reveals the origins of the idea to combine time-averaging of turbulent flows and space-averaging of ground water or multiphase flows and to apply it to rough-bed open channel flows (gravel- bed rivers, vegetated and environmental flows). The review is followed by the DAM basics – definitions of superficial and intrinsic averages, spatial-averaging rules and averaging theorems and procedures, all necessary for the derivation of double-averaged Navier-Stokes (DANS) equations. The fact that the final form of DANS is independent of the averaging sequence (time-space or space-time) is illustrated on the example of nonviscous components of the total fluid stress as discussed in [23]. It is also accentuated that rigorously derived DANS contain all relevant forces that are added to the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations on the ad hoc basis, depending on the problem under consideration. Typical examples are drag and shear forces caused by roughness elements and form-induced stress. The application of DAM to rough-bed flows is presented on the example of flow over permeable bed composed of five layers of spheres packed in the cubic arrangemet. Streamwise velocity distributions in the streamwise oriented vertical plane is given to show velocity gradients near the top of spheres at the transition to the free flow layer. Results are presented for the profiles of double-averaged streamwise velocity, spatially-averaged shear Reynolds stress and spatially-averaged TKE, that both exhibit large gradients near the bed.

AB - Image velocimetry has proven to be a promising technique for monitoring river flows using remotely operated platforms such as Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). However, the application of various image velocimetry algorithms has not been extensively assessed. Therefore, a sensitivity analysis has been conducted on five different image velocimetry algorithms including Large Scale Particle Image Velocimetry (LSPIV), Large-Scale Particle Tracking Velocimetry (LSPTV), Kanade–Lucas Tomasi Image Velocimetry (KLT-IV or KLT), Optical Tracking Velocimetry (OTV) and Surface Structure Image Velocimetry (SSIV), during low river flow conditions (average surface velocities of 0.12–0.14 m s−1, Q60) on the River Kolubara, Central Serbia. A DJI Phantom 4 Pro UAS was used to collect two 30-second videos of the surface flow. Artificial seeding material was distributed homogeneously across the rivers surface, to enhance the conditions for image velocimetry techniques. The sensitivity analysis was performed on comparable parameters between the different algorithms, including the particle identification area parameters (such as Interrogation Area (LSPIV, LSPTV and SSIV), Block Size (KLT-IV) and Trajectory Length (OTV)) and the feature extraction rate. Results highlighted that KLT and SSIV were sensitive to changing the feature extraction rate; however, changing the particle identification area did not affect the surface velocity results significantly. OTV and LSPTV, on the other hand, highlighted that changing the particle identification area presented higher variability in the results, while changing the feature extraction rate did not affect the surface velocity outputs. LSPIV proved to be sensitive to changing both the feature extraction rate and the particle identification area. This analysis has led to the conclusions that for surface velocities of approximately 0.12 m s−1 image velocimetry techniques can provide results comparable to traditional techniques such as ADCPs. However, LSPIV, LSPTV and OTV require additional effort for calibration and selecting the appropriate parameters when compared to KLT-IV and SSIV. Despite the varying levels of sensitivity of each algorithm to changing parameters, all configuration image velocimetry algorithms provided results that were within 0.05 m s−1 of the ADCP measurements, on average.

Despite the varying levels of sensitivity of each algorithm to changing parameters, all configuration image velocimetry algorithms provided results that were within 0.05 m s−1 of the ADCP measurements, on average.",

AB - High-frequency oscillations and high surface aeration, induced by the strong turbulence, make water depth measurement for hydraulic jumps a persistently challenging task. The investigation of the hydraulic jump behaviour persists as an important research theme, especially with regards to the stilling basin design. Reliable knowledge of time-averaged and extreme values along a depth profile can help develop an adequate design of a stilling basin, improve safety and aid the understanding of the jump phenomenon. This paper presents an attempt of mitigating certain limitations of existing depth measurement methods by adopting a non-intrusive computer vision-based approach to measuring water depth profile of a hydraulic jump. The proposed method analyses video data in order to detect the boundary between the air-water mixture and the laboratory flume wall. This is achieved by coupling two computer vision methods: (1) analysis of the vertical image gradients, and (2) general-purpose edge detection using a deep neural network model. While the gradient analysis technique alone can provide adequate results, its performance can be significantly improved in combination with a neural network model which incorporates a "human-like" vision in the algorithm. The model coupling reduces the likelihood of false detections and improves the overall detection accuracy. The proposed method is tested in two experiments with different degrees of jump aeration. Results show that the coupled model can reliably and accurately capture the instantaneous depth profile along the jump, with low sensitivity to image noise and flow aeration. The coupled model presented fewer false detections than the gradient-based model, and offered consistent performance in regions of high, as well as low aeration. The proposed approach allows for automated detection of the free-surface interface and expands the potential of computer vision-based measurement methods in hydraulics.

AB - Model-driven forecasting used for flood risk assessment or river hydropower
systems management, can produce bad results due to many model uncertainties. False inflow
and lateral inflow data and/or poor estimation of initial conditions are some of the uncertainty
sources. To improve model-driven forecasting, data assimilation methods are used for updating
model (e.g., water levels) according to measurements. Widespread data assimilation
methods (EnKF, Particle Filter) often increase computational time, which creates difficulties
in everyday application of these methods in hydraulic modelling. This paper presents novel
approach based on indirect model update adding correction flows at observation locations.
This novel, tailor-made, assimilation approach uses proportional-integrative-derivative controller’s
theory as algorithm for correction flow calculation. Using indirect approach for
model update has justification in models where multiple inflows, including lateral inflows, are
bad estimated or even neglected. This novel approach is tested on 170km long section of
Danube model in Serbia, showing good performance.

AB - Model-driven forecasting, used for flood risks or big hydropower systems management, can produce results of unsatisfying accuracy even with best-calibrated hydrodynamic models. One of the biggest uncertainty sources is the inflow data, either produced by different hydrological models or obtained using unreliable rating curves. To keep the model in the up-to-date state, data assimilation techniques are used. The aim of the assimilation is to reduce the difference between simulated and observed state of selected variables by updating hydrodynamic model state variables according to observed water levels. The widely used data assimilation method applicable for nonlinear hydrodynamic models is Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF). However, this method can often increase the computational time due to complexity of mathematical apparatus, making it less applicable in everyday operations. This paper presents the novel, fast, tailor-made data assimilation method, suitable for 1D open channel hydraulic models, based on control theory. Using Proportional-Integrative-Derivative (PID) controllers, the difference between measured levels and simulated levels obtained by hydrodynamic model is reduced by adding or subtracting the flows in the junctions/sections where water levels are measured. The novel PID control-based data assimilation (PID-DA) is compared to EnKF. Benchmarking shows that PID-DA can be used for data assimilation, even coupled with simplified 1D hydraulic model, without significant sacrifice of stability and accuracy, and with reduction of computational time up to 63 times.

AB - Sectorization of a water distribution network (WDN) into district metered areas (DMAs) is a proven solution for proactive leakage control. Traditionally, WDN sectorization is conducted by local experts using a trial-and-error approach, often resulting in the identification of arbitrary solutions. Some recently published methods try to improve WDN sectorization by automating the process,
especially by using optimization. Various sectorization criteria, constraints, and limitations are introduced, which often fail to consider the issues faced by poorly managed WDNs such as limited funds and shortage of water balance data. These methods also have poor computational efficiency imposed by optimization methods used. This paper presents a new distribution network sectorization method (DeNSE), that overcomes these deficiencies. This method is based on a heuristic procedure in which WDN sectorization is driven by efficient tracking of water balance data and determining the lowest cost investment needed to maintain the same level of operational performance. The above-mentioned set of criteria is particularly well suited for initial sectorization of WDNs when major uncertainties in water balance data often lead to poor management decisions. The DeNSE method is validated and benchmarked against other sectorization methodologies in a case study of a large, real-world WDN. The results show that DeNSE can identify sound, realistic sectorization solutions that are in some respects better than corresponding solutions reported in the literature. DeNSE also enables high computational efficiency, ensuring its applicability to real-world WDNs.

AB - Usage of the appropriate model of water distribution systems (WDS) enables easier everyday operations and management decisions. Creating a reliable model of WDS requires a large amount of system response data for different case scenarios. Commonly used software for creating models of WDS is EpaNet. Ongoing processes in WDS, such as pipe bursts, permanently closed valves which are not registered in the data base and other inconsistencies will change WDS network topology, so WDS validation tests are to be applied from time to time. This paper presents the WDS network topology validation test conducted on one district metered area of Belgrade with two inflows. The pressure drop test combined with genetic algorithm and ant colony optimization are simple hydroinformatic tools available for network topology validation. The system's reaction under a pressure change during the isolation test was measured at two observation points. Obtained results are then compared with assumed WDS topology using 55 potential locations of inconsistencies in the EpaNet model. This step is repeated until a good enough match between results from the real system and the created model's version is obtained. Heuristic optimization algorithms are used for speeding up the process of finding a satisfactory match (unknown locations of inconsistencies) by minimizing or maximizing the defined criteria function.

AB - In this research the object of the analysis was the improvement of drinking water treatment plant, while groundwater being a source of drinking water.
Improvements include the removal of magnesium and manganese. Improvements also mean choosing the proper water treatment technology that would meet the standards for drinking water quality. Technologies that are suitable for removal of these ions vary in many aspects, from technological challenges to cost analysis. After thorough analysis, the right choice, in this case, was two-stage nanofiltration (NF) which has a removal rate of more than 90%. The analysis also included detailed cost analysis.

AB - In this research the object of the analysis was the groundwater used for drinking which needs certain improvements. Improvements involve removal of magnesium and manganese. Improvements also mean the choice of proper water treatment technology which could meet the standards for drinking water quality. Technologies that are suitable for removal of these ions vary from classical to modern. Lime was not considered, ion exchange was an option, but membrane technologies were the ones that meet all the criteria. Since reverse osmosis (RO) is very expensive, and nanofiltration (NF) meets the required removal demands, meaning removal of divalent ions, it has been selected as the right choice for this case.

AB - Flow measurement in sewer systems is still a challenge: there is no one “the best” method which can solve all requests, but user has to optimize the selection of equipment to fulfill the existing flow and working conditions. One of the possibilities is to use the flat electromagnetic (EM) probes, presented in this paper. Flat EM probe is designed to suit the needs of sewer systems, i.e. they are robust, can operate with low velocities of few cm/s and at the same time can measure high velocities during heavy storms, can work with shallow water and even will operate if covered
with sludge and sediments of reasonable height. In large flow profiles, user can easily integrate more flat EM probes into one system, improving the spatial integration of measured velocities and at the same time keeping the low overall costs. Results of laboratory investigation at Faculty of Civil Engineering in Belgrade are presented in the paper: mapping of 3D magnetic field to delineate the control volume and calculate the weighting function in real conditions, operation of probe under the heavy sediment load of different height and usage of CFD to analyze the
influence of real flow filed. Few examples of flat EM probe applications are presented at the end of the paper.
