AB - Fatigue analysis has an important role in evaluating the durability and performance of asphalt pavements, especially when novel or alternative materials are used. Numerous laboratory studies have investigated fatigue performance with the aim of estimating field behavior as accurately as feasible. Therefore, there are currently many different test methods and data analysis approaches that can be used. One of the most common laboratory test methods is the four-point bending beam (4PBB) test, which results are usually analyzed using the so-called traditional (where 50% reduction in initial stiffness is considered as failure criterion) or the energy ratio (ER) approach. However, outcomes from previous studies have shown that these approaches may not be appropriate and reliable if geogrids are used as a reinforcement. As a possible solution, this study proposes a new simplified flex point (SFP) approach that considers the flex point of the strain amplitude curve, measured during 4PBB fatigue tests, to calculate the number of cycles to failure. These three approaches were applied to four double-layered asphalt sets: one unreinforced and three reinforced with geogrids of different strength (50 x 50, 100 x 100 and 100 x 200 kN/m). The impact of reinforcement on the fatigue life was evaluated by comparing the critical strain values (ε6) of reinforced and unreinforced sets through the fatigue resistance improvement factor. The research findings showed that the use of geogrids improves fatigue life when the SFP and ER approaches are applied and that the traditional approach might not always be appropriate for assessing the fatigue resistance of reinforced asphalt mixtures.

AB - This study aims to assess the feasibility of using copper slag (CS) in asphalt mixtures in both the surface and base
layers of road pavements. For this purpose, two sets of asphalt mixtures with different CS content (15 and 30%)
and fraction sizes (0/8 and 0/16 mm) were prepared. The optimal binder content of each mixture was determined
using the Marshall mix design method. Their laboratory performances were investigated and compared
with the properties of reference asphalt mixtures, i.e. mixtures consisting exclusively of virgin materials. Test
results showed that adding CS to the mixture for the surface layer improved stiffness and rutting resistance and
had almost no negative impacts on the remaining properties apart from cracking resistance. Further, the addition
of CS to the base-layer mixture improved cracking resistance, but negatively affected stiffness, rutting and fatigue
resistance. In both cases, adding CS did not influence the strength, water sensitivity or freeze–thaw resistance.
From a leaching perspective, the results showed that leachates gathered from the asphalt mixtures designed for
the surface layer did not contain heavy metals. Overall, it can be concluded that CS has a potential to be used as
an appropriate aggregate substitute for virgin aggregates in asphalt mixtures for both surface and base layers.

AB - With the increasing scarcity and cost of virgin materials for asphalt mixtures, the exploration of alternative components has intensified. Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), crumb rubber (CR), steel slag (SS), and waste engine oil (WEO) have emerged as promising alternatives. Individually, RAP enhances rutting resistance but may compromise cracking tolerance; CR boosts cracking resistance; WEO affects cracking and rutting differently; and SS can influence moisture sensitivity. However, their combined impacts on asphalt performance, specifically on moisture damage, rutting, and cracking resistance, remain underexplored. In this study, 44 mixtures were assessed with varying RAP (0–75%), WEO (0–15%), and CR (0–15%) contents, alongside a constant SS aggregate (0% or 20%). The results indicate that specific combinations of these alternative materials can satisfy all performance thresholds for rutting, cracking, and moisture damage. To pinpoint ranges of optimal material contents for different high-traffic scenarios, prediction models were crafted using techniques like feed-forward neural network (FNN), generalized linear model (GLM), support vector regression (SVM), and Gaussian process regression (GPR). Among these, GPR demonstrated superior efficacy, effectively identifying regions of satisfactory performance.

AB - U poslednje vreme dolazi do povećane potrebe za upotrebom alternativnih i recikliranih materijala prilikom izgradnje puteva usled ograničenih količina kvalitetnog kamenog agregata i novog bitumena.

AB - This recommendation is based on the results of an inter-laboratory study organised by the RILEM technical committee TC 264-RAP "Asphalt Pavement Recycling"—Task Group 3 (TG3) focusing on Asphalt Binder for Recycled Asphalt Mixture. The TG3 aimed to evaluate the effect of a specific family of materials known as asphalt recycling agent (ARA) on the aged binder under different configurations. Even though ageing is an irreversible phenomenon, effective ARA must have the capability to improve the flexibility of the bituminous materials and their resistance against cracking susceptibility with no adverse effect on the rutting resistance of pavements containing reclaimed asphalt. A total of 17 participating laboratories analysed the properties of binder blends composed of aged binder from reclaimed asphalt in three different contents (60, 80, 100%), ARA and virgin binder. The physical properties of the blends were thoroughly evaluated through traditional and rheological binder testing. This recommendation proposes to restore the original material properties at low and intermediate temperatures (i.e. cracking resistance) while balancing the high-temperature characteristics (i.e. rutting susceptibility) with durable impact throughout the progression of ageing phenomena. Therefore, using of the Dynamic Shear Rheometer is foreseen as a more suitable and sustainable means to evaluate binder blends containing an asphalt recycling agent. Compared with conventional testing, the proposed approach requires fewer materials while resulting in a faster experimental procedure with one single test.

Compared with conventional testing, the proposed approach requires fewer materials while resulting in a faster experimental procedure with one single test.",

AB - This research aims to determine if the observed improvements using polyethylene (PE) waste in asphalt binder translate into better performance at the asphalt mixture scale in the laboratory environment while overcoming the stability and homogeneity issues experienced at the binder level. This is accomplished through a round-robin multinational experimental program covering four continents, with the active participation of eleven laboratories within the RILEM TC 279-WMR. PE modified AC16 mixtures were prepared employing the dry process using local materials with the PE waste provided by one source. Various mechanical tests were performed to investigate the compactability, strength, moisture sensitivity, stiffness and permanent deformation. Compared to the control mixtures, the following observations were made for PE modified mixtures: easier to compact, lower time dependence of stiffness, higher elastic behavior, lower creep rate, and higher creep modulus. Furthermore, cyclic compression test results showed that the resistance to permanent deformation is improved when using PE in asphalt mixtures, whereas the wheel tracking tests showed relatively similar or better results when 1.5% PE was added to the control mixture. The wheel tracking test results in water showed an increase in deformation with increasing PE content. The interlaboratory investigation showed that the use of PE as a performance enhancing additive in asphalt pavements is a viable, environmentally friendly option for recycling waste plastic and could potentially reduce the use of polymer additives in asphalt.

AB - This paper describes the development of novel/state-of-art computational framework to accurately predict the degree of binder activity of a reclaimed asphalt pavement sample as a percentage of the indirect tensile strength (ITS) using a reduced number of input variables that are relatively easy to obtain, namely compaction temperature, air voids and ITS. Different machine learning (ML) techniques were applied to obtain the most accurate data representation model. Specifically, three ML techniques were applied: 6th-degree multivariate polynomial regression with regularization, artificial neural network and random forest regression. The three techniques produced models with very similar precision, reporting a mean absolute error ranging from 12.2 to 12.8% of maximum ITS on the test data set. The work presented in this paper is an evolution in terms of data analysis of the results obtained within the interlaboratory tests conducted by Task Group 5 of the RILEM Technical Committee 264 on Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement. Hence, despite it has strong bonds with this framework, this work was developed independently and can be considered as a natural follow-up.

AB - The construction of new roads requires large amounts of virgin aggregate, filler, and virgin bitumen (VB).As these materials are available in limited quantities, seeking alternative solutions to decrease/replacetheir usage is inevitable. At the same time, the reconstruction of existing roads results in an increasedamount of stockpiled materials and the need for new materials. These issues can be overcome if reclaimedasphalt pavement (RAP)—which is, in principle, a 100%-recyclable material—is partially or completelyused in the production of new asphalt mixtures. Because of the presence of aged binder within the RAP(RAPb), the total amount of virgin bitumen that should be added in an asphalt mixture could bedecreased; hence, the highest potential of using RAP is within hot mix asphalt (HMA) and warm mixasphalt (WMA)...

Zbog toga je najveći potencijal upotrebe struganog asfalta u asfaltnim mešavinamaproizvedenim po toplom (WMA) i vrućem postupku (HMA)..., The construction of new roads requires large amounts of virgin aggregate, filler, and virgin bitumen (VB).As these materials are available in limited quantities, seeking alternative solutions to decrease/replacetheir usage is inevitable. Because of the presence of aged binder within the RAP(RAPb), the total amount of virgin bitumen that should be added in an asphalt mixture could bedecreased; hence, the highest potential of using RAP is within hot mix asphalt (HMA) and warm mixasphalt (WMA)...",

AB - The use of rejuvenators has seen a consistent increase over the years in the asphalt pavement industry. This is due to the need for maximizing the demand for incorporating a higher amount of Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) in the pavement asphalt mixtures. In order to tackle this challenge, the Task Group 3, focusing on asphalt binders and additives, of the RILEM TC RAP conducted an interlaboratory activity to evaluate the effect of aging on blends of virgin and rejuvenated RA binders. A set of conventional tests including penetration value at 25 °C, softening point temperature and rheological measurements by means of Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) were selected to involve a large number of participants. A binder, recovered from field RA, was treated with a bio-based rejuvenator and blended with a virgin binder to simulate recycling at three different percentages 60 %, 80 %, and 100 %. These blends, as well as the pure virgin binder, were next short and long term aged and tested to evaluate the changes in the corresponding properties. Relatively consistent results were obtained for the entire set of blends. The aging of combined rejuvenated RA and virgin binders was comparable to that experienced for the pure virgin binder. DSR data provided a more precise evolution of the impact of aging on the materials.

AB - The use of Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) into new asphalt mixtures becomes an inevitable step for sustainable infrastructure. Saving natural, non-renewable materials, such as bitumen and aggregates, the asphalt industry is moving forward with more recycling. Although asphalt is a 100% reusable material, high recycling rates are not yet easily achievable due to many limitations, going from technical specifications through RA properties to asphalt plant capabilities. The rate of RA, which may be used within a new asphalt mixture, depends on many aspects: variability, moisture and fines contents, presence of polymers, brittleness of aged binder, etc. The latter is directly linked to the degree of the RA binder ageing. As higher RA content increases the asphalt mixture stiffness, the material becomes more brittle and prone to cracking. The use of recycling additives is taking recycling to the next level by solving these issues. With the growing need of the industry for asphalt recycling agents, many products have appeared on the market with different effects. In this study, three asphalt recycling agents (two industrial and one alternative) were used as rejuvenators. Blends with50% of rejuvenated RA binder (RAb) and virgin binder were subjected to different ageing levels: short (RTFOT), long (PAV for 20h) and prolonged (PAV for 60h). After each ageing level, physical, rheological and chemical properties were evaluated addressing the ageing behaviour of the additives used. Testing results showed that one industrial additive lost almost all its properties after prolonged ageing, while the other additives showed comparable results with the second industrial product.

AB - The need for road (re)construction materials is constantly growing. At the same time, there
is a limited quantity of new, high-quality materials available and a buildup of secondary/recycled
construction materials. One possible solution may be the use of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) in asphalt mixtures instead of natural aggregate (NA), which also promotes economic and environmental sustainability. The potential use of fine and coarse RCA in road asphalt mixtures is analyzed in this work. Nine asphalt mixtures were tested for base course layers, where RCA was used as a NA substitute. The impact of the quantity of RCA (up to 45% by mass) on the resulting physical and mechanical properties of asphalt mixtures was investigated, and consequently compared with the properties of a reference control mixture produced with NA only. Results reveal that the addition of RCA requires higher bitumen in comparison to the control mixture (up to 1%). Consequently, mixtures with RCA had 15-20% lower stiffness and up to 26% higher critical fatigue strain value (E6). Although RCA mixtures contained more bitumen, their low-temperature resistance was slightly inferior compared with the control mixture (failure temperatures were up to 4.3 C higher). In conclusion, asphalt mixtures with up to 45% RCA can be used without substantially reducing performance.

AB - The lack of understanding the mechanisms governing the interaction between reclaimed asphalt binder (RAb)1 and recycling agents is one of the technical issues that still need to be resolved when high amount of reclaimed asphalt (RA)2 is used in a new recycled asphalt mixture (RAM). Due to important role of RAb in that interaction and increased used of RA, it becomes necessary to have a way to classify RA, as any other material used in asphalt mixture production. It is very important to determine how much RAb is active by itself (DoA)3, but also to determine how much RAb can be considered available for a mix design of RAM (DoAv)4 when a recycling agent is used. Finally, since that RAM’s properties are strongly dependent on the degree of blending between RAb and recycling agent (DoB)5, it should evaluate to what extent RAb contributes to the final properties of RAM. These blending parameters (DoA, DoAv and DoB) are so crucial that identifying suitable methodologies for their assessment would be extremely important in performing a proper mix design due to dangerous of having a lack of active bitumen in RAM. This paper presents a literature review of methods which have been used for the evaluation and assessment of mentioned parameters, grouped in four macro-areas: mechanical, chemical, visualization and mechanistic approaches. Furthermore, summarized review of used methods was prepared together with their critical review, all with aim to find appropriate methods for determining these parameters.

Furthermore, summarized review of used methods was prepared together with their critical review, all with aim to find appropriate methods for determining these parameters.",

AB - Abstract. In view of increasing social and environmental consciousness, a circular approach in waste materials management in order to convert them into new secondary resources is becoming more necessary. Given this context, an interlaboratory testing program (ILTP) focusing on maximizing the use of waste aggregates replacing conventional virgin ones has been launched in the framework of the RILEM Technical Committee on “Valorisation of Waste and Secondary Materials for Roads”. Construction and demolition wastes, recycled concrete aggregates and steel slags were selected as waste aggregates to be investigated. A reference mixture prepared with natural virgin aggregates was al-so considered for comparison purposes. This paper describes the results achieved during the first steps of the ILTP concerning: i) the basic characterization of the selected marginal aggregates; ii) the Marshall mix design of different asphalt mixtures prepared with one or more waste aggregates. Overall, the experimental results collected during these preliminary steps seem to confirm that the selected marginal aggregates can be considered as valid alternatives for the traditional road materials, while not jeopardizing their performance

AB - This paper presents an experimental study of the influence of a reinforcement system on fatigue resistance of asphalt concrete. For purpose of this research, unreinforced and grid-reinforced asphalt specimens were tested. Both groups of specimens were manufactured using non-standard method. A 1-ton roller had been used to prepare two-layered slabs with total height of 70 mm. Further, slabs were sawed to obtain beams 6 cm wide and 400 mm long. The total height of each beam was 50 mm, including 20 mm of the bottom layer and 30 mm of the upper layer. The reinforced specimens contained self-adhesive geosynthetic grid between layers. The four point bending beam test, according to EN 12697-24:2012, was used for fatigue testing, while results were analyzed using various failure criteria. The experiment helped to quantify the extension of fatigue life that can be obtained by reinforcement, depending on the selected testing conditions and fatigue criteria.

AB - It is common practice to assume full blending of the aged binder of reclaimed asphalt (RA) within the design of new asphalt mixtures. Although being practical, this assumption has often led designers to asphalt mixtures lacking binder. Hence, going towards recycled asphalt mixtures (RAM) there is a need to have a better understanding of the blending phenomena, to have a general agreement on terminology and finally adapting RA classification and mix design procedures accordingly. This manuscript aims at being both a reference and stimulus for the scientific community to work in this direction and on this basis provides a nomenclature and a theoretical framework of the blending phenomena. The study is built upon a literature review on definitions, methods and influencing factors related with the blending phenomena and as a result, an intrinsic property of RA, the Degree of binder Activity (DoA), is introduced for the sake of improving RA classification. Furthermore, the two well-known concepts of the Degree of Blending (DoB) and the Degree of binder Availability (DoAv) are redefined, within the proposed framework, together with practical suggestions to introduce them in mix design procedures.

AB - Recently, the reduction of the environmental burdens related to highway infrastructures has been in the spotlight. Within this context, the use of recycled materials in bituminous mixtures for road pavement construction and maintenance has the potential to mitigate the excessive use of non-renewable resources. Nevertheless, the material consumption is only one of the aspects that affects the sustainability of an infrastructure. Other relevant aspects related to environmental issues should be considered. The objective of this work is to evaluate the potential environmental impacts of asphalt mixtures containing crumb rubber (CR) (vulcanised or devulcanised) and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) assuming different Degree of binder Activation (DoA) of the aged binder by means of a life cycle assessment (LCA). The results show that the small amount of CR used for bituminous mixtures application does not justify all the additional consumption of resources and emissions associated with its treatment. These results are explained by the higher environmental impacts stemming from the treatment of the rubber and the higher amount of bitumen employed in the mixture. In turn, for mixtures containing RAP the analysis revealed an improvement in the score of all the environmental indicators considered.

AB - Rapid industrial development over the last decades has led to the creation of a diversified industrial waste that poses serious environmental problems. On several occasions attempts have been made to increase the reuse of waste and alternative materials for the construction of civil engineering structures. One of these materials is the copper slag that is byproduct of melting and processing of copper ore. The objective of this paper is to investigate the possibility of using copper slag from RTB Bor in asphalt mixtures for wearing courses of pavement structures. For this purpose, the testing of two asphalt mixtures AB11s with different percentages of the content of copper slag, as a partial replacement of the natural aggregate, was carried out. The replacement percentage of copper slag was 25% and 50% of fractions 2/4, 4/8 and 8/11.2 mm. The obtained results were compared with the control mixture. In addition to the physico - mechanical characteristics of the slag (density, water absorption, toughness and abrasion characteristics, affinity between slag and bitumen, particle shape), the subject of this research is the design of asphalt mixtures according to the Marshall method and testing of the water resistance, stiffness and resistance to permanent deformation of asphalt mixtures with slag. The results of these tests show that asphalt mixtures with cooper slag have better water resistance, but lower resistance to permanent deformation, lower stiffness at low frequencies (high temperatures) and higher stiffness at high temperatures (low frequencies).

AB - This paper focuses on the influence of Waste Cooking Oil (WCO), as an alternative recycling agent, on physical and rheological properties of blends containing aged binder recovered from Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP). The objective is to determine the WCO dose that would allow the blends to achieve the same characteristics as the Virgin Binder (VB) in terms of penetration, softening point, viscosity and rheological properties. In order to achieve this, the RAP binder (RAPB) is blended with the VB (penetration grade 50/70) in three different proportions, 15%, 30% and 45% of the total binder mass. Three different doses of WCO are added in blends with 30% and 45% RAPB, while no WCO was added in the blend with 15% RAPB. Results show that the optimal WCO dose is lower when tests producing lower strains in samples (Dynamic Shear Rheometer and penetration) are used, compared to tests producing higher strains (viscosity).

AB - Recycled concrete aggregate (RCA), obtained by crushing of original (old) concrete, consists of natural aggregate grains and a cement mortar matrix. The presence of old adhered cement mortar, which has higher porosity than natural aggregate, causes unfavourable properties of RCA. The research conducted in order to improve the quality of RCA and to enable its greater application in the construction industry is presented in this paper. Therefore, RCA was subjected to quality improvement treatments with hydrochloric acid and carbon dioxide (accelerated carbonation). The first procedure was aimed at partially removing the adhered cement mortar and the second at reinforcing the cement matrix. The physical, mechanical and chemical properties of all three types of RCA were tested. After the pre-soaking acid treatment (0.1 mol/dm(3) HCl), RCA showed reduced water absorption (up to 3%); the process of accelerated carbonation also led to reduced water absorption (13-20%) as well as to improved mechanical properties (similar to 10%). A scanning electron microscopy investigation revealed that the carbonation process, as expected, significantly reduces porosity of RCA. The overall results show that if RCA is obtained by crushing of compact, high-quality concrete, the procedures of aggregate quality improvement are not necessary.
